Jeremy Guthrie (2.89, 153 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.59, 98 ERA+)
Happy 41st birthday to Tim Wakefield! He's looking for a decision in his 22nd straight start -- actually, he's looking only for a W. He has not faced the Orioles this season.
Guthrie will try to pitch as he did on May 13, when he was pulled two outs shy of a 5-0 complete game shutout -- a game the Red Sox won with six runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Also, Rangers starter Kason Gabbard faces Cleveland at noon.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 285 of 285you're right. the most amazing part of the game -- and they completely ignore it (or maybe are unaware, which is worse).
I don't fault Dougie for his lack of speed, but the baserunning today between Manny and him has been bad.
On the brighter side, Okaji worked quickly despite the single. Is it an insult to bring Gagne in in a non-save situation? You'd think the fans want to see him.
Gagne with a Spoon!
(Sorry, that's post-Larry David writing there, I know...)
gagne's up!
Gagne with a Spoon!
oh yeah, of course! *cricket*
;)

What? He's not here to get saves. And he's not the closer.
It better not be an insult, because we'll be insulting him for most of the rest of the season.
Not exactly an exciting situation for Gagne, but a nice confidence builder, it should be. Kind of a "spoon"ish outing for him.
I hope Francona is smart enough to know he can't worry about "save situations" for Gagne. He shouldn't even be worrying about that for Papelbon, and he's the closer.
Gagne with a spoon = funny
Maybe not Larry David funny, but that's too high a bar for a game thread.
This is the perfect situation for Gagne. I'm sure he planned on him to close out today's game. And now, it's not a blowout, but he's got a nice cushion. Last game at home before a road trip, will be cheered loudly, fans get to see him, nice for the confidence. And we rest Pap.
I couldn't tell what song they played when he came in.

exactly. its about the red sox winning games, not a pitcher getting a certain stat.
gagne just jogged out to the mound. ah, he's cute :) (sorry)
Our first game thread featuring Lights Out. I'm excited.
Pop out by A-Rod. Still no HR. But Abreu got one. 11-9.
Abreu solo HR makes it 11-9. WS should score some more runs if they want to nail it down. At least A-Rod followed up with a pop out, but...it's only the bottom of the sixth.
In L.A., they used to sell t-shirts with a "beard" like his, a piece of black fabric shaped like his beard.
Nice start. K-ig Millar. Kevin was probably rooting for it!
ok why would pap be warming up in the pen? lol
ah, he's cute :) (sorry)
Don't apologize. That way I won't feel so silly when Jacoby Ellsbury comes up. :)
Okay, this brings up that old discussion... I almost brought it up yesterday, when Gagne said how much he wants to be a closer (but will do what it takes for our team). These guys do have egos, and "closer" is the "cool" role. So unless you can somehow cool-ify ending the eigth....
Gagne can't really be Lights Out with Bot around. More like Lights Almost Out.
Lights Dimmed.
The Dimmer.
Kevin was probably rooting for it!
hehe he prolly was! love that guy :)
woohoo another k for gagne!
Sit down, Ta-hotter.
Don't apologize. That way I won't feel so silly when Jacoby Ellsbury comes up. :)
hahah ;D
FUCK YOU, MIGGY!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
(I am grabbing my crotch!)
Jeemer, The Dimmer and The Snuffer! Sounds like a cartoon from TV Funhouse.
double.
as far as i'm concerned the 7th-8th-9th are the last inning.
That was ugly. Ruined The Dimmer's 1-2-3. Oh well, next victim.
Knowing this day, this is fitting.
mehh.
birds, just. just go.
as far as i'm concerned the 7th-8th-9th are the last inning.
I like it!
doerr's last time in fenway -- let's nail this down!
"as far as i'm concerned the 7th-8th-9th are the last inning."
You solved the whole issue. Seriously. And Gagne did say he thinks of it as "closing" the eighth. We're gold.
whew. we win :D
Whew. Thanks Manny.
Crazy game! Glad we can laugh about it.
Water.
Nice catch, Manny. Don't ever fuckin' do it again.
Sweet win today! Didn't want to lose the series to the Oze.
Dirty Water, that is.
You solved the whole issue. Seriously. And Gagne did say he thinks of it as "closing" the eighth. We're gold.
:) i think we are.
The Dimmer did his job. Nice game!
Many thanks to our best player...ladies & gentlemen, Dustin Pedroia!
That's gold, Jerry, gold!
White Sox 11-9 after 6.
in play no out!
1st and 3rd, 1 out for Chi.
Ahhh! Pops out into a double play? The guy tried to score on a pop up to second. They end the inning at home. This White Sox squad, man..
And now it's 15 minutes for the 7th inning bullshit.
jesus. I just saw the replay. Out by a good 10 feet.
Of course they start out with a walk, and now Jeter pinch hits as tying run.
Jeter Ks! Nice job by McDougal.
But Andy F'ing Phillips proved a challenge. Two on, one out. Come on Chicago. Get a DP, get ten runs in the eighth, and get the hell out of there and don't let me see your faces until 2008.
And they get it! The lineout variety! Hahahaha..
Sweet. I'm all alone here, eh?
I'm lurking, if that counts. :)
Alternating between this page and Yahoo's live boxscore page (and some actual work here and there).
Catching change for the Yanks. Weird.
I've got it on the mlb.tv now, so I can help ya out if nec. So odd, Farnsworth was warming, and Posada had something wrong, so Tony Pena was out there, calling for a "new catcher."
Super long game... maybe Posada's tired.
cool, thanks! weird about the catching change...
Yeah, they say probably cramping or heat-related.
HOME RUN!
12-9
L-Girl's favorite guy on NESN now (on that commercial, the facial hair, hat backwards guy). Glad I have it muted.
Black seats HR!!!
13-9 . Dye. Yanks fans Looooove Farnsworth. Ha
If there was anyone in the stands, you'd hear booing.
Farnsworth is so awesome.
Through the wickets for Cano. hahahhaha
We go bottom 8, as fans boo Farnsworth off.
Bahahaha, way to go cano.
2 outs, 0 on, and here comes A-Rod. I really think if he gets 500 now, it won't be that big a deal, especially if they lose this one.
The headline would be "Meaningless 500" or whatever.
Wow, they actually have footage of that bridge collapsing.
A-Rod flails away for the K. We go to the ninth.
"That's gonna be a long game.
Thu Aug 02, 02:17:00 PM "
Good call, me.
It's good that Cleveland won even though it was at Ramones' expense. Detroit/Cleveland/Seattle need to get off their collective asses to keep the Yanks at home this October. Twins, A's, and Jays are lost causes.
Wow, they actually have footage of that bridge collapsing.
Serious? I just heard about that today and saw some pictures, looked brutal.
Sidenote, from the globe:
"Mirabelli is (this is not a misprint) 3 for 3 with two RBIs"
I love the way dougie is treated.
Yanks use 6 pitchers. And we go bottom 9. I'd be silly to think the White Sox will get three quick outs, right? I mean, I'd have to have my head examined to think Jenks won't walk the first guy on four pitches...
It's a four-run lead. They really should hold on.
It's security camera footage, but you really see it just plop down. Horrible.
If this guy starts sweatin' and gettin' all Derek Lowe facey, get him out, Guillen!
K! one out
2 out!
Good night, Yanks. Called third strike. What a crazy day. 8 up.
Good stuff. Dye into the black! (Why couldn't Jetes hit a 23-run home run? I'm confused.)
Better set my alarm for the tab tomorrow! S. #14 on the way ....
Good Ws in Boston and the Bronx for the Soxes...Now let's hope that they keep winning out west, and not get...
Stymied in Seattle again!
Nice surprising turnout for an midweek afternoon game. 280+!
As always, Replacement Level provides interesting reading. From the hilarious:
This inning gives us an appreciation for the importance of Derek Jeter’s leadership.
If Derek is at short, Roger covers first and Cano turns the double play. .. and Roger pitches better.
To the sublime:
This actually works out nicely for me. I despise Roger Clemens with the white-hot passion of a billion suns going supernova, so seeing him suck the wet farts out of dead pigeons gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. The Yanks have already won the series, so if they lose, shit happens. If they come from behind and win, they sweep and it’s a great story. Either way, Clemens still sucked big green rocks through a straw and had his lying-sack-of-shit ass removed in the second inning.
People read that crap? And they like it?
A good reminder for me that I'm not really missing anything.
L-Girl's favorite guy on NESN now (on that commercial, the facial hair, hat backwards guy).
Except that guy, of course. :)
That Jeter bit has to be a joke. The RL Guys don't buy the Calm Eyes Blather.
Anyone that hates the TCM is a-okay with me, though.
"suck the wet farts out of dead pigeons ... sucked big green rocks through a straw ... had his lying-sack-of-shit ass removed in the second inning"
Fine, it ain't Red Smith, but I like it.
Jesus, does everybody work nights........Nice Double U...
