fucking direct-tv...i dont see the day game listed, therefor i probably wont get to see it... day two without sox.... i hate that i dont live in boston anymore for this reason.
The thing about the rain... this is why I wish teams would recognize that the weather looks bad and re-schedule the games accordingly. If you know it's going to rain in the afternoon or evening, why not move the start up a bit? It's been done before, but I'm sure they don't like to do it because of the problems with notifying fans, media, other teams, etc. But today it would have been good to move the games up so as to have the best chance of avoiding the rain.
Just popped in to say it's the Chicago Comcast feed on EI today. They're having some kind of problem with the truck, so it's like a radio pbp right now with two logos on the screen.
So the game is on EI but at least up here it's not NESN.
still have the Chicago Comcast feed on EI here in New Jersey... I had the sound off, so didn't realize they were actually carrying the audio; they just had a "We'll be right back" slate on the screen, then suddenly the game came on with a runner on 2nd in the bottom of the first.
Always funny to hear Orsillo mention the '94 Nebraska Cornhuskers championship team. I was in college at Nebraska at the time. (Sorry to waste Nixon33's time with this personal info.)
Glenn Geffner said something about how Beckett's only walked 3 in an entire game a couple of times all season... but I didn't listen to the entire sentence because it's... Glenn Geffner.

Jere, I was thinking the same thing... a third straight walk to Dye, while obviously not ideal, was still better than Dye getting a hit, especially with 2 outs and runners going on contact.
Certainly was a good throw by A.J. to get Lugo. For as many steals as Lugo has, he's also been somewhat of an adventure on the bases at times this season.
I see a huge difference. I was on mlb.tv last year and also I can pull up the 400K stream now for comparison. Maybe you have something else causing trouble (PC, video adapter, network, ISP, ...)
In fact I brought my laptop downstairs night before last to have the game on while doing something else, and my wife was very impressed with the picture, compared with what she's used to on her PC for video.
Looks like Beckett's settling down. Doesn't matter where your fastball is, though, (as Coco swings out of his shoes... oof. He fouled that one off his shin, actually. Yowzer)... Need some <10 pitch innings from Becks. (nice little bloop from Coco. Let's see if he can give Garland some grief on the paths.)
Tim: Same goes. "Broad" just comes off as sexist to me. We can call her on her shit without bringing gender into it.
Sorry if I offended anyone - I don't really care about "her" gender, if it was (still could be) some guy, i would've said "whats with this guy rippin into jere?"...i didnt mean it to be sexist.
AJ did the classic, "Rice swings on first pitch to try to imitate Evans' HR on previous at bat and flies out." Not to single out Jim, but that seemed more common in those days.

In the scheme of things, I wasn't particularly offended, but I did trip up on the word a bit. I tend to call myself on stuff, so why not everyone else, too. :-)
Leaving my first comment...have been reading your threads for the last couple weeks. Relocated Red Sox fan in Orlando. You all make watching the games even more fun.
banning words is stupid, and bitch is often a very useful word. however...

LMAO! Okajima has his own song now like Dice-K! The song was created by a music producer from Tokyo who was intrigued with all of the music and fanfare at Fenway Park. It appears that next time Okajima pitches at Fenway the song will be played.
Yesterday the Red Sox played the song in their clubhouse during the rain delay, a reported 9 times.

It landed in the garbage can! LMAO!!! Joe Castiglione: Swing and a foul back here... will it come in? Yes it does. Why did I duck? ...Where did it go? Is it in the wastebasket? Glenn go check if to see if it's in the wastebasket." Glenn: I can't find it anywhere around here. Oh wait. Yes, yes it is in the wastebasket!"
Joe C. is always the baseball man. "Hey, Glenn, see if that ball is softer than it used to be." Joe takes the ball and says, "It's hard as a rock. You can't move the seams at all."
Like a geologist getting hit in the head with a rock and instead of getting pissed, he studies the rock.
It's weird to see a guy with a decent-to-good ERA be designated, but they were really calling for his head over at Replacement Level. Not just because he wasn't doing well against lefties, but also because his ERA was hiding a horrendous number of inherited runners scoring.

Today's weather info from the Globe:
"According to weather.com, the Chicago area could get more thunderstorms, possibly severe, this afternoon. Chance of rain is listed at 90 percent and "flooding is possible." The forecast doesn't get much better tonight, when the chance of rain is listed at 80 percent."
fucking direct-tv...i dont see the day game listed, therefor i probably wont get to see it...
day two without sox....
i hate that i dont live in boston anymore for this reason.
I probably won't be able to follow the first game much at all, though every time I say that I find time to sneak glances at gameday.
Hopefully, work thins out by 8.
Extra Innings has the game, it's just not listed. Try the same channel that Game 2 will be on.
****
I'm watching sans game thread today, at least for the day game. Enjoy the game! (Buenas tardes, amigos.)

It's the NESN feed on mlb.tv.
Good start by Lugo.

I don't care whether or not you can see the game.

Not exactly a blistering pace to this game.
This does not look good.
3 walks in a row.
Control issues early perhaps?
Glenn Geffner said something about how Beckett's only walked 3 in an entire game a couple of times all season... but I didn't listen to the entire sentence because it's... Glenn Geffner.
32 pitches so far.
Walked 4 in a game once this year according to DO.
Come on, Tex, you have to go a LONG way today...
If that were our inning, we'd be all frustrated for only getting one. That's how I'm thinking of it.
Maybe with the extra couple of days off he can throw 10 or 15 extra pitches.
Doubtful, though. We are in the pitch-count era.
If that were our inning, we'd be all frustrated for only getting one.
Jere, I was thinking the same thing... a third straight walk to Dye, while obviously not ideal, was still better than Dye getting a hit, especially with 2 outs and runners going on contact.
31 + 26 = 57 pitches in 2 innings
Not the best way to start off a doubleheader day, Josh.
Single ties it.
Good listening skills, Julio.
Come on, Octor Octopus.
Certainly was a good throw by A.J. to get Lugo. For as many steals as Lugo has, he's also been somewhat of an adventure on the bases at times this season.
Looking at the replay, he got a good jump but I'm not sure Jose Reyes or Joey Gathright would have been safe with that jump and Pierzynski's throw.
I'm on MLB.TV and they are showing NESN also. The new Premium service with a 700K stream is actually quite good for PQ.
"he's also been somewhat of an adventure on the bases at times this season."
somewhat?? :)
Coco leads off next inning...
The new Premium service with a 700K stream is actually quite good for PQ.
It doesn't seem all that much better than their 400K stream last year (I forget what the difference in $).
re: 400K vs 700K

Point taken, Jere. :P

Up to 72 pitches for Beckett.
We're gettin' to this guy.
Ducks on the pond.
Thought he had a dong. I'll take it, though. Nice job, Tek!
A thin line between a single and a slam.
and it keeps going. :-) I can handle a few LOB in this one as long as they keep up with some of this.
Nice! 5-1. Speaking of "ducks on the pond," am I the only one who says "dicks on the pond" when the Yanks have the bases loaded?
What a play for 'Tek to go 1st to 3rd on that little flare, huh? Smart baserunning.
Isn't it amazing, though? Drew goes from 1st to 2nd on a ball off the left field wall... 'Tek goes from 1st to 3rd on a little bloop.
Heh. Dicks on the pond. That's great.
I think I'm a little bit in man-love with Lowell.
""Who the fuck calls a home run a "dong"?"
Hahaha! Me! It actually is used sometimes, which I can't believe, so of course I'm gonna use it. I think it's hilarious.
Okay, I wrote that and it didn't go through and now I see you're really pissed about it! Yeah, what gives?
Whats goin on here? jere and nixon hate each other? is Barbara nixon's mom?
By the way, who are you really? I haven't seen Nixon33 and you in the same room lately...
I thought the same thing!
OMIGOD ALL THIS TALK ABOUT DICKS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA BONER JAMZ!!!!!~!@!!@~1`ione!
Barbabra could also be "keith."
Count me in with the five-year-old humor.
I also cannot get mlb.tv going. Keep hitting the links, just doesn't connect.
But in all honesty, can someone back me up that homers are called "dongs" occasionally?
Not to feed the trolls, but...
Barbara: Show some respect for fellow commentators. You can disagree all you want with what someone says, but stop with the name calling.
Tim: Same goes. "Broad" just comes off as sexist to me. We can call her on her shit without bringing gender into it.
best to all.

That is true, jere they are called dongs, and dingers on occasion...
Well said..Nick
I should note I have no official capacity here, so sorry if I overstepped my role. I'm still playing Single-A as a commentator here.
Thanks. "She" seemed so pissed about that, and said so in the SAME minute I made the comment. That was really weird.
Don't worry, it's all getting deleted:)
Josh's first 1-2-3.
The way everyone's at each other's throats, it seems like it's 5-1 Chicago rather than the other way around.
By the way... What is one of the nicknames given to cops?
5-0.
"barabra" is free to comment -- but "she" should read the rules. if "barbara" is actually someone else, that will come out soon enough.
no problem with the reminder, nick.
re "barbara" and "her" types: why is my little blog so important to these people?
Micah Owings pitches again for the Diamondbacks tonight... I'll bet you a lot of people will be watching his at-bats tonight.
The guys at ESPN often say dongs (why not just go the whole way and call 'em penises?).
I hope someone shoots me if I ever say dongs seriously.
I prefer taters -- from watching Boomer Scott in the late 70s.
Ouch. Hanging curve. Dong.
Tim: Same goes. "Broad" just comes off as sexist to me. We can call her on her shit without bringing gender into it.

Not anymore! :>)

i am 99.99999999999999% sure that "barbara" was "mike" or "keith" (or both).
"Not anymore! :>)"
Cool.
Read an article a couple weeks ago that said there is a proposed ordinance in NYC that would ban use of the word "bitch"
What a throw by Beckett. Though you may have to count that one as a pitch. Heh.
If Barb was Keith, I apologize to Nixon33. Even though I don't care if he accepts, ha.
Read an article a couple weeks ago that said there is a proposed ordinance in NYC that would ban use of the word "bitch"
Sounds like something Facsist Rudy would have done.

Heh. Makes me think of what a person would say if you brought up the topic of "enemy blogs" 10 years ago.

so what did "barbara" say? redsock, fwd pls. :)
^ was that a post relating to the game in the game thread??? there's a site we haven't seen too much in the past hour!
Have I mentioned Mike Lowell?
;-p
It has been a little crude.L- hang around and class this joint up a little bit....
Ha! That's a good one, 9C. I'll try to keep my foul mouth in check. Or in cheque, as we say here.

I was actually being serious.....:)
If you can't hit get hit! (the story of my little league career.)
Having said that, Tek did quite well earlier.
Come on, three-run dong, bitch.
I'm assuming this Mike is not the recent Mike.
tim, i agree about language, context is very important. but broad?! come on man, it's the 21st century! that's like something darren stevens would have called endora.
Hinske's over the .200 mark! hooray!
This Mike is not the troll Mike.
But he's also not "our" Mike T who reads both our blogs and misses your political content.
There cannot be two people with the same Blogger account name, can there? No one could sign up as redsock or l-girl, I assume.
I was actually being serious.....:)
Go figure. :) Incentive not to curse like a construction worker.
I hear Jere S misses the political content, too!
After the first two innings, I wouldn't have guessed Beckett would still be round to start the 6th.
Glad he's recovering the conserve the pen.
There can be tons of people with the Blogger name Mike. If Mike Smith, Mike Jones, Mike Lowell and Mike Youkilis all sign up with Google accounts under those names, their logins will all show up as Mike. But there can only be one Mike Lowell and one Mike Smith.
another broken bat.
I'll just change my name to "Mike L" hope this helps...
hahaha, whatevs. im'a head over to the speakeasy later for some hooch! Myah-see!
Laura K misses it too.
The multiple blogger names is why I changed mine from Rob to Ish.
Looks like we've hit the 100 post mark. Time to start the bullpen? :P
Mike Youkilis: the Greek god of comments.
Yeah, we're ineffective after 100 posts.
should i change my name to tim w? ;-)
Glad to see them sticking with Beckett through 6. 110 pitches... 2 outs... I know there's 1st and 3rd now but... here comes Francona. Nevermind, haha.
That's only if you have Gmail. You can have a Google account without that.
way to waste one
very key!
hey guess what?! i got the job!! and i announce it on jos before i announce it on wmtc! gotta go...
kind of a wasted AB by Cora.
Why does that stadium keep playing Zamfir, master of the pan flute?
nice job, L.
wow, you can actually count the # of people in the upper deck. I'd be up there getting every foul ball!
Only the seventh time this year in 24 starts he's failed to record a quality start.
Wow Jere - a Zamfir reference. Classic!
What sport do you think has the strangest mascots?
Only the seventh time this year in 24 starts he's failed to record a quality start.
That's 30%!
I guess Babs got scared off by the naughty talk.
Only 30%? Yeah, but it's still pretty good. Not a head-spinning kind of stat, but -- a lot of his QS have been high quality.
Okaji in the seventh takes the hold-the-line mentality. If we break open a bigger lead, then Papelbon/Gagne/Timlin can be saved for Game 2 -- but first, keep the lead.
heh... yeah, as soon as I posted that I regretted it; don't want to give anyone any ideas. Actually I think I'll just delete it, since it's kind of irrelevant anyway.
A little baffling to see Oki in the 7th, but if he has a clean 7th I'm sure he'll pitch the 8th as well. Too much strategy for these doubleheaders.
Wow, an Okajima song. What will they think of next? Or whatever.
I like how Tina said "up to 9 times." Like, ooh, it could've been 7 or 8. But at the most, 9!
seeing effing eye single.
This would be the perfect time to press the Steinbrenner-patented "heavy rain" button.
Nice! we go to the 8th. 5-3 carmine hose.
I like how Tina said "up to 9 times." Like, ooh, it could've been 7 or 8. But at the most, 9!
Give her a break. She's distracted because she is worried she'll be hit by a dong.
I walk out of my office w/ 2 out and no one on..I walk in and 1st and 2nd!
well alright, then. it works out.
Yes! They don't score.
And I can turn the radio back on now. :) (Not a fan of the Geff, but I like listening to Joe Castiglione)
(thanks jere)
see you all later for game 2 :)
She's distracted because she is worried she'll be hit by a dong.
we all are
I liked it better with Eric Frede doing the field reporting, but nobody asked me.
"Give her a break. She's distracted because she is worried she'll be hit by a dong."
ha. actually, she was quoting someone else so I should've clarified I was making fun of that person, not Tina.
Dong.
@spencer brown:
That got an audible snort out of me. thanks.
She's distracted because she is worried she'll be hit by a dong.
Ah, it's good to get a hearty laugh in during the middle of the day.
Ah, PST, that is.
I'm so glad I'm not the only 5 year old in here. :D
Timlin warming.
Who was that old in-crowd reporter? I can't believe I forgot who that was.... Wait, it was TC, wasn't it?
Somewhat interesting article about J.D. here:
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7151274?MSNHPHMA
You know, some light reading between games.
That's not the "bible diet" article, is it?
Ahh my chair broke! òó
The little nob that controls the back of the chair broke so now when I sit down I pretty much fall backwards. Nothing like sitting in wounded chairs.
Timlin warming
At first I thought that said "Timlin warning."
Which might also be appropriate.
Schilling and Danks sounds like Vielen Danks which means "thanks very much" in German.
funny what pops into your head listening to baseball.
Frede was the guy doing those Fan of the Game thing? Man, were those lame and worthless.
I think TC used to do the field reporting way before the pre and post-game shows. But the one before Tina was Eric Frede. He then moved onto the pre and post-game shows for the hapless Bruins.
You guys are yakking like it's a 30-3 blowout.
It's 5-3 and there has been a Timin sighting!!!
Timlin warning It seems like he's 50/50 these days. One day he's great, next day he bombs.
Go go go go goooooo FOUL. Lame.
Well I guess maybe we'll be worn out by game 2, Redsock? One can hope, right?
Right, I meant before Frede. I'm pretty sure a young TC would be in the crowd talking to randoms. But it's fuzzy since I only saw NESN once in a great while. Even though I lived in New England. (sorry)
*sniff sniff*
Something's brewing.
Manny!
2 on, no outs.
Hey, wait, how come stats and facts are so key except when talking about Timlin? :)
My vision before 2003 is quite hazy. I'm 19 and I was sporadic when watching the games before 2003... Even '03 is a little hazy, even though I watched more. So I don't know if it was TC or not. Heh. But I'm glad I was old enough to remember some of those memorable 1999 moments and some of those good Pedro games... not to mention the ever-so-memorable '99 all-star game.
Let's just bring in a relief pitcher to load the bases and make sure there are no outs records. Excellent! mission accomplished.
I'd call pinch-hitting Kielty for Drew is a good move here.
Time to bury them...
Wow, Coco's got quite the fro going. Did you see him just then next to Tito in the dugout shot?
Timlin hasn't given up a run since Aug 3 -- 8 appearances scoreless.
Please no K/DP
wow kielty crushed that one... would have been a dong/dinger/tater if not to center field.
Even though I lived in New England. (sorry)
Oh, did you live in New England, and yet you were still unable to get NESN? Do tell!
(sorry)
Heh. All the runners advance. First RBI with the Red Sox for Kielty. Good move indeed.
Looks like Coco shaved his face, too.
It's very easy to see that Terry Francona really wants to avoid using Papelbon in game 1.
coco alternates between braids and fro. the braids make the fro fro-ier.
Timlin hasn't given up a run since Aug 3 -- 8 appearances scoreless.
I know the facts don't support it right now, but the Timlin fear runs deep.
No dong for Kielty. Kielty is dongless. Owens grabbed Kielty's ball, saving the dong.
I could go on.
The Babe would have said Kiely knocked the cock off that ball.
It's true.
proverbial yooooook
Look out Mark Sweeny... here comes Youk with the pinch-hit!
Yoook!!!
the best kind of Yook AB: get a hit on the first pitch and avoid all the complaining about called strikes.
LMAO. The last foul ball went into the Red Sox radio booth.
I have noted Timlin's recent out-getting ability.
I hav also noted his suckiness from 2005 (IR mostly), 2006 and some of 2007.
See? Since Okaji held the line, and we scored some, we can do Timlin/Snyder or Snyder for 2 innings.
Don't you love that even our mop-up guy has a decent ERA? Last year I would have given a lot for any reliever besides Papelbon to have an ERA under 4.
I agree. Snyder's been very underrated this season. Who says the mop-up guy doesn't have an important role?
All right, J Lopez had a good ERA last year with 27 IP, but he's the only one who did who had a significant amount of work.
Hey hey. 1-2-3 Timlin. Not bad not bad.
I'm gonna miss the last inning--ironically, because I'm headed over to Fenway for the concert. Hang on, y'all. Ooh, Mike Myers! This one's over.
The radio guys think Pap's warming in the bullpen.
Pap was warming.
Mike Myers faces the guy he was hired by the Yankees to get out...and walks him.
Are the trying to tire us out for the second game by making us see a lot of pitches? And walking us?
That's why he was designated by the Yankees. His numbers were okay, but his job was to get lefties and he wasn't doing it.
Official scorer said paps is loosening. Hmm. Francona always does things for a reason. Maybe the standing plan was for Gagné to close game 2 anyways? With 1 out and 2 men on, hopefully a couple more runs could be plated and get Snyder up.
Looks like Pap's coming in, says Remy. Seriously, are they gonna waste him if we have a six-run lead? With a game tonight and tomorrow?
Ask and you shall receive.
Lowell just made it easier for me to actually leave. Bye everybody. Don't use Pap. Seriously, Tito. Think hard about this one.
If Bot warms up, I know they like to have him pitch. But warming up in Game 1 shouldn't "burn" him for the nightcap.
2 sac flies. Or flys. Whatever. But hey. Kielty's proving to be a good man to hit for a sac fly. Or a quick single.
DONG!!!!!
Tek hits a....
dare I say it...
DONG
all kidding aside nice to see Tek hitting again.
wow myers just cant get anyone out
i hope we dont have to waste pap...
Is this just Myers until whenever?
wheeee.....
It's feels bad to see Myers struggling so much.
merciful out.
Okay let's get 3 outs and rest up a little. My fingers need a break.
hey at least he got picked-up by someone
Yeah. Him and David Wells. Wells just signed with the Dodgers and inserted into their rotation.
It's weird to see a guy with a decent-to-good ERA be designated, but they were really calling for his head over at Replacement Level. Not just because he wasn't doing well against lefties, but also because his ERA was hiding a horrendous number of inherited runners scoring.
Ah, well. Best to Mike Myers.
I just heard some guy on the effects mic yell out to Jerry Owens, "Hey, Jerry! Your shoe's untied!" :P
