G134: Yankees 5, Red Sox 0

Never a dull moment.

Wang followed the TCM (5.1 no-hit innings) with six no-hit frames of his own this afternoon before leaving with a 7-1-0-4-5, 103 line.

Cano hit two solo home runs off Schilling (7-6-2-1-4, 88) -- leading off the 3rd and 5th innings -- then the MFY tacked on three more runs off Jeemer in the eighth (an RBI double from Abreu and a throwing error by Varitek (which allowed two runs to cross)).

The bats were non-existent: 13 hits in the three games, only six in the last two. And six runs in 27 innings. ... But as the true measure of the offense was not the White Sox series, neither is it these past three games. There will be panic, but my glass in (at least) half-full. A 80-54 record and a five-game lead at the end of August.

Now we feast on the dregs of the East for 13 games: the Orioles (at Fenway tomorrow), Blue Jays and Devil Rays. Then the Yankees invade Fenway on September 14.

***

Curt Schilling (4.11, 110 ERA+) / Chien-Ming Wang (3.95, 109 ERA+)

Random notes:
Schilling has allowed five earned runs all three times he's faced the Yankees this season. Twice, the team has won, though the right-hander was long gone on both occasions. ... the Yankees are hitting him at a .372 clip. ...

Wang has been shaky in three starts against the Red Sox this year, allowing nearly two baserunners per inning, but still managing to win two of his three starts. ...

Bobby Abreu is the only Yankees regular to have never homered off Schilling. But with 14 hits in 37 career at-bats, he also holds a .378 average off the right-hander, tops on the team.
In New York, even after two wins against Boston, they are talking only about the wild card.

Mark Feinsand, Daily News:
Last night's 4-3 Yankee win over the Red Sox might not have the city of Boston in a panic-stricken uproar this morning. But maybe it kept the Beantowners from getting a full night's sleep while the Bombers were daring to dream.

Yes, the Yankees still trail their rivals by six games in the American League East, a huge margin with just 29 games remaining in the season.

total crap. i blame JD drew (why not)

right...and gor forbid we voice our OWN opinions!
haha

so is everyone ok with the fact that we got swept?
im not.

what in the world are you talking about?

laura k said...

no one said they were OK w/ getting swept! just that we don't think it's the end of the world, the season, the anything. we're just bouncing back a bit faster than you might be, is all.

Terrekain said...

ish: agreed, but did Jeemer have this kind of success in Japan (AAAA)? Even with his head-jerk, I don't think so and although he's added a pitch to his arsenal, it won't make up the difference in the long run (and even you have to admit he doesn't have Maddux's control by a long shot).

Bottom-line: I'm not saying he's not a good reliever, I'm just saying he's not an "under-two ERA" reliever.

Unknown said...

Um. This game is not yet over.

laura k said...

drew, i was gonna say that but i knew i'd be creamed, so i refrained. thanks. :)

allan said...

no, his japan era was not under 1.00. he was an 11 year vet over there.

he has developed a new pitch during this season though.

Terrekain said...

Well, this lead gives us the opportunity to save Mo and maybe Joba. Mo had back-to-back saves (one was four outs) so it'd be nice to keep him off his feet.

Jere said...

"I'm just saying he's not an "under-two ERA" reliever."

But Joba, the man who fucking ate Clemens, is already in Monument Park.

Joe Grav said...

gimme a break. this game is over.

if we score 5 runs off of Rivera, I will take a picture of myself french-kissing an I (Heart) NY shirt and upload it to this blog

How about another Mother's Day Miracle!!

if we score 5 runs off of Rivera, I will take a picture of myself french-kissing an I (Heart) NY shirt and upload it to this blog

if for no other reason...

laura k said...

i don't understand the attraction for terrekain. i can't imagine wanting to post at a yankees blog. i doubt he'd be here if the scores were reversed.

allan said...

I think we're getting E-Ram instead.

nixon33 said...

the guy who sang "chocolate rain" is coming in to pitch.

nixon33 said...

lets get some runs off of him

Rob said...

Well now we'll see Edwar Ramirez... So this one isn't over, even if Torre brought in Rivera in the middle of it. Terrekain: How has Rivera been this year with inherited runners in the ninth inning?

You build up a big enough jam against them, and it might, just might be a little too much for Rivera.

Joba's starting the 9th? Well that throws a wrench.

laura k said...

no eram. it's pizza.

nick said...

first pitch bullshit. (yeah, home runs, I know.)

allan said...

so is everyone ok with the fact that we got swept?
im not.

you are getting upset with us for things you are making up in your head.

... more hut?

*mumbles* let's go red sox..

clap, clap

clap clap...clap.

laura k said...

damn tiz swinging at the 1st pitch. i hate it.

Rob said...

I was surprised Youk didn't beef that one. He had a little grin, though. I like how he said "whew."

allan said...

headhunter ... BRAWL time.

pls?

laura k said...

tossed!! WOW

Sarah Haendler said...

the Hut just looked confused there.

Jere said...

You throw at a guy's head twice in a row, you're gonna get ejected.

Rob said...

Oh boy! This is very, very strange, here! Come on! Leave Chambermaid in there! Let him walk a few people!

Last thing we need is a brawl here in the top of the 9th, yeah?

nick said...

what'd beckett just say there?

andy said...

I thought it was a replay

thatdietcokegirl said...

a fight would be nice.

Ron said...

Well that was interesting.

I was thinking more about Ankiel in his pitching days when the second pitch flew over Youk's head, but wow.

If it true, what a fucking coward.

nixon33 said...

"you are getting upset with us for things you are making up in your head."

yeah keep editing my posts...

laura k said...

beckett? huh?

Terrekain said...

Joba's coming out in the 9th. Interestingly, if the Red Sox hadn't allowed more than a run to score in the 8th (3-run lead), Joba would not have come out for the 9th because the Yankees don't want him to close.

I don't think he can give up 5 runs in one-inning after shutting down division-leading middle-of-the-orders for the last 11.

Well, there goes Joba ;)

Jim said...

All we heard when the series started was a worse-case scenario that even an unlikely sweep still meant a 5-game lead. Just me, but I don't feel any better about a 5-game lead when the Sox get dominated by average starting pitching AND get swept. There's a month to go and these guys have to start hitting consistently against ALL pitching.

thatdietcokegirl said...

beckett is cussing.

naughty naughty

allan said...

"what? i can't throw at yook's head twice? i'm joba the fucking hutt!"

...

rally spark .. maybe ... please ... sox ...

Jere said...

Josh: "You fuckin' cock!"

I can't wait til these guys come to Fenway.

JFett said...

OK, I've been working most of the game but I have to chime in. Two pitches to the head from a guy who is supposed to be the second coming? and he's surpised he got tossed? Wow, never a dull moment...

nixon33 said...

i was asking, not upset wth "you"
keep reading into my words for things to make you jump on me everytime i post.
jesus. everyone is so fucking touchy today.

allan said...

it is impossible for me to edit anyone's post -- even my own.

laura k said...

nix33, i didn't mean to edit it, not at all. i just don't think anyone here is ok with us getting swept, just b/c we don't act like you. that's all.

if you meant something different, say so. please don't accuse me of trying to edit you, i have no desire to do that and haven't done so.

Rob said...

The problem with a brawl right here is there would most likely be suspensions on both sides, and for the Red Sox that's a real stupid move considering you've got 2 outs left before you get swept, and you get yourself ejected and subsequently suspended. (say that three times fast.)

nixon33 said...

the game people, theres a fucking game going on.
lets save the nitpicking for after ok?

allan said...

Josh: "You fuckin' cock!"

Was that directed at Wang?

nick said...

after the ejection they showed 2 shots of beckett cursing something fierce from the dugout.

nixon33 said...

chocolate rain

Rob said...

Did they just intentionally walk Youk? I completely missed that.

laura k said...

cool! we didn't see that, of course. we're watching on yes.

Terrekain said...

Jere said: "I'm just saying he's not an "under-two ERA" reliever."

But Joba, the man who fucking ate Clemens, is already in Monument Park."

Joba's different in that he's actually a starter with a 100+ mph fastball (with movement) along with 4 other pitches that he can throw for strikes.

The fastball isn't a pitch that he has to strain to throw either. He throws 97-100 NATURALLY.

and that really is scary, so it's no surprise that he's blowing away MLB hitters.

allan said...

PASSEDBALLA!!!!!!!

nixon33 said...

come on doctah!

nick said...

I'm not a fan of brawls in general--but certainly not in this situation.

Jere said...

No, Wang's a dong. First pitch to Youk from Edwar on 3-1 was low ball 4.

allan said...

PASSEDBALLA!!!!!!!!
PASSEDBALLA!!!!!!!!

laura k said...

just like yesterday, those nyy insurance runs loom very large.

Terrekain said...

Bottom-line: "Jeemer" and "the Hutt" are two completely different animals.

Sarah Haendler said...

Poor Drew. More fodder for the haters if he gets nothing here. (At least he's swinging.)

Rob said...

This should do it.

Sarah Haendler said...

Well that was depressing.

Jere said...

So, when's the last time we were this far ahead of the Yanks after being swept by them?

laura k said...

i don't blame the yankees for making a big fuss over joba, why shouldn't they. we make a fuss over jeemer and papelbon. the yankees are starved for pitching, so if they get some, they're gonna enjoy it.

Zenslinger said...

Why were all of Okaji's runs earned?

nixon33 said...

well there you go...
way to show some fucking balls to yr rivals.
instead they showed us their dongs and shoved 'em right up our collective asses.
but hey, NY we still have an optimistic 5 game lead, so fuck you.
but we could've at least won one game...

Rob said...

Things are looking up now, folks.

Back at Fenway with Baltimore for 3, then Toronto for 3. And we get Wake tomorrow trying to become the only Major Leaguer with 17 wins.

nixon33 said...

at least we're going to miss bedard on sat. some good news i guess.

Jere said...

Yeah, but we don't make a fuss over Pap and say, "Man, he's really good because of this and this and this, while Rivera's really not nearly as good as he is." And we especially didn't say it after Pap had thrown 10 major league innings.

thatdietcokegirl said...

bah. i'm pissed.
tomorrow is another day tho (thx scarlett)

Terrekain said...

I-girl: I wouldn't say that the Yankees are "starved" for pitching, at least not now. Earlier in the year, you could make that case, but not now.

Besides, saying that the Yankees need pitching is like saying the Sox need hitting. It's an "I want it all" mentality that doesn't factor in real-world constraints and the incumbent trade-offs that necessarily follow.

Boston has bet the farm on great pitching and better-than-average hitting. Not great hitting ala the Yankees, but you make do.

New York has bet it's farm on great hitting and better-than-average pitching. Yes, the Yankees have very good pitching, as this series attests. Most of their losses came early in the year when their rotation was in a shambles with injuries which is not the case now

laura k said...

I-girl: I wouldn't say that the Yankees are "starved" for pitching

I would.

Also, I'd rather not talk with you. The blog owner let you in because he thinks you're not a troll, but I disagree. Have a nice day.

nixon33 said...

im sure glad that our pitching staff's AL leading ERA helped us score some runs today.

nixon33 said...

well, im going back into the outside world.
see you tomorrow and hope to get a win.

Terrekain said...

Jere: Hype is part of the off-field game and believe me, Red Sox fans are as prone to over-hype as Yankee fans.

Witness Dice-K. (and don't try to tell me that he wasn't overhyped, gyro-ball and all)

Joba has better stuff than Dice-K but it's a question of his stamina as it is in everything else when going from the minors to the majors (and Dice-K was and is no exception no matter how famous he is with those pitch counts). You just never know how a body will react when you put on the added strain of pitching 30 to 60 more innings throughout a season.

It's sometimes a crap-shoot, but the odds are better-than-average with Joba.

He hasn't been facing weak rivals.

He's set-down the middle orders of everyone including the Tigers, Angels and Sox without ANY trouble. That's a pretty convincing indicator.

thatdietcokegirl said...

and i guess if it were us who'd just swept them and we had just got within 5, i'd still be thinking that we'd have our work cut out for us still. the yankees do.

we both have pretty easy schedules, but at least we get the last series with them at home. we still win this motherfucker y'all, don't worry! by hook or by crook, we win it. i don't give a shit if it's by a half game, it's ours ;D

Rob said...

Don't forget, the rosters expand on Saturday, and you all know what kind of bullets we've got down on the farm. We'll get some much-needed relief from guys who aren't here now because there wasn't any room for them. Most of the time things don't change too much in September, but it can at least be a good opportunity to bring in some relief.

allan said...

And we especially didn't say it after Pap had thrown 10 major league innings.

But when he began closing in 2006, he had a 0.00 ERA in 14.1 April innings.

And we were gushing like crazy.

allan said...

I'm off to slurp $5 martinis.

Rob said...

Most of the time things don't change too much in September.

By that, I mean with the call-ups. But Ellsbury really impressed me in his first stint with the Red Sox this season.

Terrekain said...

BTW, when I said that the Yankees "bet the farm on great hitting" I meant it in the financial sense.

In terms of the farming system in the minors (which are developed at a high price, but SIGNED at a low cost), the Yankees have bet their future on great pitching. The next 2 years will see a young rotation with Pettite (if he takes the option) as the senior and Wang as a worthy #1 or #2.

allan said...

One thing I am very excited about is the many pitching prospects coming up with both clubs.

...

Okay, really leaving now.

Fack sakes!

I leave Canada for three days and this is what happens! Oh well, 5 GA better than 0 GA. Time to feast on the east.

Time to enjoy the rest of this vacation too.

Let's hope TB can give the Yankees some TB this weekend.

Oh well, at least we had built up the lead beforehand.
I'm off to watch A ball at historic Ernie Shore Field. All GOOD Sox fans should know that name :)
(I'm sure you do Redsock. I'd love to tell the story sometime, since I've lived with it here in Winston-Salem my whole life. Maybe it would make a nice entry in that new blog of mine)
