Sometime between the end of these winter meetings and the start of spring training, the Red Sox would like to talk to Jason Varitek about a contract extension. The Red Sox may have little choice here, considering the dearth of catching talent out there. For Varitek (who will be 36 next April), no other team will (over-?) value him as much as Boston does. So ... something like 2/18?
Varitek's four-year, $40 million deal - signed after the 2004 World Series - expires after the 2008 season and the Sox are unsure whether they have a suitable replacement in their pipeline.

'Dearth' seems to be the word of the day today.
Sounds good to me, of course....:)
Maybe they can trade a shitty bullpen pitcher for an up-and-coming catcher and starting pitcher from Seattle's farm system at the trade deadline this year...oh wait.
Maybe a contract like Wakefield's?
Not sure how I feel about extending Varitek, but I have heard 2/24.
Amy, you know I'm with you there. Love that man.
Tim, I nearly snorted milk out of my nose.
Good to see you, Sarah! Hope all is well.
