Red Sox - 000 003 001 2 - 6 11 0Matsuzaka surrendered a line-drive home run to Ellis on his 3rd pitch of the game and had early control problems (though at times, he was getting seriously squeezed). He threw 30 pitches in each of the first two innings, walking four, hitting one, and tossing a wild pitch. Oakland stranded two runners in the first and left the bases loaded in the second.
Athletics - 200 002 000 1 - 5 7 0
Dice (5-2-2-5-6, 95) recovered, retiring 10 of his last 11 batters, allowing only one ball out of the infield.
Boston grabbed the lead in the sixth. Pedroia doubled to right, Youkilis walked and Manny drove brought them in with a double down the left field line. Ramirez scored on a single from Moss, who got the last-minute start after Drew's back tightened up.
Kyle Snyder relieved Dice in the 6th and promptly gave the lead back as Crosby singled and Hannahan donged. Javier Lopez came in and got out of the inning quickly. Tito gave the 8th to Bryan Corey, a move which paid off. Ellsbury had to make a leaping catch at the center field wall on Brown's leadoff drive, banging his shoulder a bit, but Corey got the next two A's on weak grounders. That let Jeemer take the 9th and Bot the 10th.
In the ninth, two outs away from defeat, Moss hit his first major league home run -- down the right field line off Huston Street -- to tie the game. And the Sox tagged Street again in the 10th. Lugo reached on an infield single to third and was bunted over by Pedroia. Yook fanned and Ortiz was intentionally walked. Ramirez came through again, with a double off the wall in right center. Four RBI for Manny today. He watched it for awhile from the plate, but still slide easily into second.
Snuffer wasn't his snuffin' self in the bottom of the 10th. He walked Barton and Brown cracked a one-out double. Barton scored, cutting the lead to 6-5, but Brown was caught in a rundown between second and third -- 9-4-3-5-6-3 -- for an important out. Crosby and Hannahan both singled, putting the winning run on first, but Suzuki grounded out 3-1 to end the game.

Whoa, Heng Brothers, way to be a fan. I couldn't have done a 3 a.m. start, no way.
Ococ!
Intentional walk, didn't they learn their lesson last time?
heh. walking lowell to get to moss.
big mistake.
Maybe I was actually right on that call :)
OK Manny!
Well, I gotta go - more drs, hospitals, etc.
It never ends.
C'mon 'pen, hold it up for me!
I'll chat later.
Go SOX!
I can't freaking believe I won't get to see Papelbon's first save!
Ish, I know, I always defend Manny on those things. That one was just a bit much for me. You at least gotta make sure you're going to get to 2nd.
But unlike Steve Phillips I won't talk about it all season.
i could have done a 3am start. wouldn't have liked it much, though. i'd be screwed the rest of the day.
Walk to get to Moss? Biiiiiiig mistake.
BIG swing
3 AM start, I probably would have stayed up all night for :-p and I'd be paying the price now
Time for Papelbon...I wonder if they will play Shippin' Up in tokyo
shippin up.
cora in for lugo.
Ellsbury-Crisp-Moss...Cora at SS... good defense.

Piece of cake!
bot music, cool
151 km/h for papelbon.
Crap, that is never good
Tuning in from work on Gameday. Looks like I missed some good old Red Sox come from behind excitement. Now, Bot, just stop those balls and get them out!
What ho from the left coast everyone. Happy new season! I set my TiVo on ESPN2, and I have DirecTV, so #@!#@$#%$#^#^%$#%$#. That's how I feel about now. Is there ANY channel that has the game on DirecTV (and, no, I don't get NESN).
I'm at work. Got to see moss fly out. I was sitting in my car 1 back at the stop sign by the Red Lion Inn slapping my steering wheel on Manny's hit... all the other cars just floating around as if it were any other day.
NICE CUTOFF from yook -- and they get the runner off the bases.
yay!!!!
Dumb Dumb Dumb. Loving it.
What a freakin idiot! Thanks Emil!
A gift and we'll take it!
heh. youk tagged brown at third base.
fortunate, and huge out.
shaky first outing for Pap
That would have tied the game.
blogger ate my last comment. What's with the hammer the closer we got going on tonight?
That baserunning is hurting the As now.
brown should really be kicking himself now. he'd be crossing the plate now to tie the game.
these games, you try to find a way to win. formulas and facts on paper aren't very good factors when it's march 25th. papelbon's not going to be lights out on 3.25
ugh
F*******
I still like our chances.
Phillips: Papelbon is "just a kid, figuring things out".
Huh?
Now I remember why we all hate Gameday. I was sitting there with Runs scored and no idea how many....
Phew.
this game has had a little bit of everything, hasn't it?
Well this sure has been interesting
Papelbon having too much fun in Tokyo or something?
161 wins away from the perfect regular season.
alright! A smile and I start the workday.
WIN!
see? they found a way to win.
1-0!

mlb: 1/2 gb
a's: 1 gb
Whew! That was fun. See you guys tomorrow!
Sox take sole possession of 1st in the East. A's last in the West.
One in the win column, and it isn't even April yet. Now let's hope Papelbon doesn't go out carousing too much.
Have a good day, everyone.
Fist pump - not in CI style - at desk as the winning pitcher is displayed on Redsox.com.
Looking forward to a proper ability to watch and contribute - best do some work now...
Cheerio from the Lord from London!
watched bottom 10 w/cleaning crew in break room. Sweet! 1 down, see u's tomorrow.
they had a hero's interview with manny. three languages. japanese, translated to spanish, and answered in english.
Well, I'm back. The damn channel is still off, but I gave the DIRECT TV gang something to remember me by.(Tim, they probably are going to want to question you.) Thank goodness ny folks have cable.
Why are the A's trying to reassemble the 2006 Red Sox bullpen? What the heck was the matter with Papelbon? Who needs JD Drew when we can play Brandon Moss? Is Emil Brown an idiot or what?
jack, it's such a common problem, that it showed up on boston.com's extra bases blog. 168 comments about people all over the country without either ESPN2 or NESN.
it was almost like someone did this on purpose. it'd be fine if it was one or the other, but it seems like someone disabled the two channels.
Was that a Direct TV problem? We had no trouble getting NESN on cable.
That's because you get NESN. These are out-of-market people. It's a whole different struggle.
I thought from Ish's comment that some people couldn't get NESN either, but I assume through Direct TV, since that's what Jack said he was having trouble with. That must have been incredibly frustrating. (Gameday is bad enough.)
well, have a good day everybody. looking forward to doing the same thing tomorrow.
probably with an inch of new snow on the ground here. :\
The DirectTV people or MLB or whoever effed up should be put in a ring with lions and it should be shown on TV worldwide. As further punishment, they should have to set it all up themselves and make sure every TV in the world gets the broadcast. If only we who had the game on TWO stations could've each given up one to the people who had neither.
Cool.
Just got home and the wife's marker numbrs are not up, and Pap got the save, although it sounds like he had to work for it.
OK - the Yankees are tied for last place and behind us - just like we like it!
See ya in the AM, gotta go to work now!
As the bot tried to bring back memories of 3 pack Stanhouse. Thank you Emil Brown!!!!
Still a win is a win!!!
Sosock, I'm happy to hear the Dr news. I meant to wish you luck, but I was moderating.
I was up until 3:30am last night, so 6am baseball wasn't in the cards for me. Glad to see we pulled this one out.
And the Sox have the best record in baseball once again.
I am sorry to have missed the drama today, but it was fun reading through the whole thread. I just had too big a day to get up at 3am. Maybe tomorrow morning.
Whatta crazy win. Dice's fellow escape artist Lester goes tomorrow. And I'll see Dice next week in Oakland, hopefully with fewer BBs and reduction in Pap's sky-high ERA.
Wow! I lived in anticipation all day of finding out what happened and man am I happy now that I found out they won! I figured they would have came back, and did they ever!
Looking forward to another tomorrow - maybe I'll be able to catch the whole game this time.
