Red Sox - 100 101 010 2 - 6 13 0Back-to-back home runs from Kevin Youkilis and Coco Crisp led the Sox to an extra-inning win -- after Jonathan Papelbon had surrendered a game-tying dong in the ninth.
Reds - 010 000 111 0 - 4 8 1
Jacoby Ellsbury stole his 30th and 31st bases of the season, tying the team's rookie record. Amby McConnell stole 31 bases in 1908.

Tim Wakefield (4.33, 101 ERA+) / Edinson Volquez (1.56, 283 ERA+)
Volquez's highly impressive game log (14 games, 13 starts).
He made 17 starts over three seasons with Texas (2005-07). The only current Red Sox player he has faced is Sean Casey (1-for-2).
Red Sox RedsLineup change: Cora in for Lugo (stomach ailment).

Whee.
But I am 201.
Damn.
So bring Wakefield back out?
remy said jeemer was up and assumes he'll be in, though he expected with the 2 run lead wake would stay. the ol' "they got him up so he'll pitch" deal.
"Castig just mentioned Manny now. I am so far behind!"
But couldn't Castig have been late mentioning it? Unless you heard the cheer and he said it right away....
Flomax commercial followed up by a Thompson Water Seal ad. Make up your minds.
Okajima in.
The radio through MLB audio has a huge delay. If I refresh too soon, I know the outcome of the at-bat before the batter steps in.
And then a hair coloring ad for ex hippies called Touch of Gray.
Flomax commercial followed up by a Thompson Water Seal ad. Make up your minds.
:>)
shitty brk bat flair.
I know but I'm just sayin' maybe the delay wasn't as much as you thought--if Castig didn't notice Manny was out there for a few seconds or whatever.
i knew what you meant. it's possible, but i think not.
Is that one of those regulation strikes they never call?
k
Phillips still shitty.
phillips bringin' the MFY curse to the reds.
So, umm, pitch this guy low in the zone.
Gotta go make dinner, but I am watching, but can't thread. Keeping my fingers crossed for Oki...
"the power threat andy phillips"
really?
tito not effing around.
MDC in.
i hope jack liked that hook.
i hope jack liked that hook.
I was about to type "some call jack marshall and tell him tito pulled jeemer".
Shit.
shit
That Lowell out's looming a little here.
Clutch.
cash's block was STAGGERING!
He gets a DP on 3-0!!!!! Oh yeah!!
3-0 GIDP???????????????
me likey, me fucking likey.
YEAH DP!!!!!!!
wow -- major idiot swing from griffey there.
and the sox unclog the bases.
Griffey must be having a post-600 slump the way Manny had his pre-500 one.
I went to middle school with the guy in that shrunken head commercial. Not the guy with the shrunken head. The guy who delivers the line.
Moss to pitch. (You never know.)
Pet peeve alert: Catcher throwing to first after K.
dirt kick--which was a totally out of control thing for Dom's brother to do, as the stories say...
My fave YS moment? 2004 ALCS 7.
Glad you're thinking of me---I'm all choked up---and YES, I am thrilled Tito's learning curve isn't flat.
Now explain to me why he pulled Wakefield with a low pitch count and Bruce coming up, when Bruce had looked like a Little Leaguer against the knuckleball. He wouldn't have pulled him with the same pitch count if it had been the 7th rather than the 8th, now would he? Sometimes Tito manages like a robot.
But he pulled Jeemer before he could blow the game. That's progress!
OF needs a single and dong for the cycle.
ah, the dirt kick. "and he caught everything belt high".
so he never dived.
That's progress!
Yes, the only manager to bring the Red Sox two WS wins in the past 85+ years is finally learning how to do something right. Thank goodness.
It's hard to fault Tito for pulling Wake too early (rather than too late).
My fave YS moment? 2004 ALCS 7.
What's this from? TV ad?
Some ASG bullshit.
The dirt kick was a "Yankee Stadium memory"--an idea that I believe was conceived by ME on one of my broadcasts early this year! (My memories wouldn't quite make Fox's cut.)
The dirt kick was a "Yankee Stadium memory"--an idea that I believe was conceived by ME on one of my broadcasts early this year! (My memories wouldn't quite make Fox's cut.)
Conceived by you? You mean your idea to use it as your YS memory? Or...?
On my 'cast, I was doing "Yankee Stadium Memories" since it's the final season. Now Fox is doing it as part of their All-Star Game hype-machine. But mine were like, "guy guzzles beer in front of 13-year old me and spills it all over himself."
And the one they just showed was the dirt-kick.
Shifty!
Now Fox is doing it as part of their All-Star Game hype-machine.
They never would have thought of it without you.
one sox-yanks game from the early- or mid-90s (?) or so had fans in two side by side upper decks tossing beer at each other. there was so much beer flying it looked like each side had hoses!
It's not "POP"-elbon, guy.
Unless you're in Maine, I guess. SO it's okay.
"They never would have thought of it without you."
Maybe MLB was going around the web, looking for copyright infringements, came across my game, and....
Which particular dirt kick was this?
Shit.
I definitely won't volunteer my moment(s).
fuck.
god. damn.
Which particular dirt kick was this?
Joe DiMaggio. There's some footage you always see.
oh shit
damn it - shoulda gone with timlin
shit shit shit
Aardsma in 10?
Another rare "me standing and clapping, one strike away, and the game gets tied up"
shoulda gone with timlin
always!
did he get beat with a fastball, or 2nd best pitch?
Aardsma in 10?
sure, why not
flat split
fuck.
remy wondering if reds will steal
The dumb thing I was gonna say in the "pre-9/11" era of this game:
"I had a great view of a YS beer shower in the left field bleachers around that time. I've never seen anything like it. Despite having all my Sox gear on, I went completely unscathed, since we were in the back. So I just got to watch it out in front of me. There was beer in the air at a constant rate for several minutes."
Fuck. I hate the fact that we now have to HOPE to get to the tenth
gift strike 2 for bot
Why are we talking about the calls Pap has had go his way, and not the equally shitty calls that have gone against him?
Because calls go for and against all pitchers all the time, and people talk about whatever.
26 pitches for snuffer there
OK... now let's talk about who goes out for the 10th...
Probably Hansen.
Did the Aardvark pitch a lot yesterday?
Let's not talk about the bottom of the 10th til we see if we have a 10 run lead by then or not.
aaards - 1 inning 12 pit
YOUK!
Lots of Sox shirts in the rightfield stands.

hell has frozen over, coco hit a dingerdong
Youk's hilarious in the dugout, turning around and seeing Coco's go over the wall.
OMG OCOC!!!!!!!
hot dong on dong action. me likee.
Youk jumps in the dugout. That was his first jump ever that didn't end up with him landing on a series clinching pile.
great shot of yook pogoing after ococ's dong.
thanks dusty for letting your closer rot in the pen!
Radio guys describing Yook in the dugout watching the Coco dong. Sounds great.
BB Cora. Lincoln's got nothing.
hi dusty! enjoy your nap?
Chances of Einstein going back to back to back: 1/100000000000000
I keep trying to come up with a Lincoln joke, but I got nothin.
Civil wars, slaves, Lincoln logs... Jere? Anyone?
sox chop a couple of lincoln logs!
Especially if they give him absolutely nothing to hit
wow -- funny we both were typing logs at the same time
Assuming this isn't a Cash DP, does Paps come out?
slaves
Leaving Lincoln in was the worst decision since Emancipation?
Lincoln can't abolish the Sox? (wow, that's really bad)
Lincoln Continental.
bot set up to vulture a win.
Lincoln can't abolish the Sox? (wow, that's really bad)
Actually it was pretty good, considering the competition.
Phil: ouch.
Linkin' Youk and Coco via dongs?
So... will it be the closer of the future?
Leaving Lincoln in was the worst decision since Emancipation?
****
Does anyone know the reference?
No, Linkin' Coco TO Youk via the dong.
Lincoln en-abe-lled us to win?
bot set up to vulture a win.
Yeah, when I see a closer with wins I assume it means blown saves
the worst decision since Emancipation
I sure don't.
blown saves ... or tie games, i guess.
I like a pinch hitter with a 195 AVG
en-abe-elled. oy.
L, I assumed you'd be the only one who knew the line.
Drawing a blank!
Well this is off-topic, though it is presidential, but I was over at Laura's blog and thought of this: In the Bill Hicks skit about Reagan and Limbaugh peeing on each other, how did he not get the phrase "trickle down" in there?
Gimme a hint.
wow - bruce swung over that slider by 3 feet!
In the Bill Hicks skit about Reagan and Limbaugh peeing on each other, how did he not get the phrase "trickle down" in there?
Too bad you can't ask him.
K.
why doesn't remy (of all people) mention hansen's sleep apnea problems (which are now gone)?
Hansen the boss of...you know
No, wait, Bruce covered by Hansen.
Afraid he'll mispronounce it?
Hint: Hickory
I love baseball players names. Jolbert? Seriously?
What's up with weird first names for Cabreras who play ball?
can the corpse of griffey do anything?
I'm just hoping every day I don't need to use the Crap-nea nickname....
Hickory? That's your hint?
I got 337! (The number Bill Lee wanted to wear because it spells LEE upside down.) Sweet.
that's a swing, there's a swing
Fooled badly on that one.
Fox still said 2-0 for a while, even though the home plate ump called swing right away.
I hate defensive indifference
337, love it
In Hansen I trust.
Nail it down and we'll go out for ice cream!
OK, Hansen, come the fuck ON
slap him, farrell.
Brennaman talkin' closers....
Bronson in the game!
ARROYO runs for griffey
rockettes-kick-hairdo in to pinch run
Water.
WHEW!
1st MLB save for Hansen.
oh praise the lord and lordess of sports, it's over. No Crapnea necessary.
WHEW
not clean water. thank something.
rockettes-kick-hairdo
who that be?
Was that one close? Or an easy play for Drew?
Anyway, it's Hansen's first career save (and it's not like he hasn't had chances...)
easy drift back for o.f.
FLA - 000
FKR - 010
Freakin Damon. Leadoff man on in top of first for Yanks.
And... I'm going out for ice cream too. They have great ice cream here in Buenos Aires
FLA - 000 1
FKR - 010
ofer, there was a hint of scariness to the hit initially, which is probably owed to the situation, but as soon as you saw Drew you knew he had it, he was only slightly drifting back as A&W royal rooter beer said.
That was a spontaneous nickname. Ooh, and a good Seinfeld comes on Fox!!!
Double Play Jeter. Good start...
l-girl, it was arroyo. rocketees leg kick while pitching, hairdo all the time!
Leadoff double off Mussina!
FUCKING ASTROS
Who knew Pence was an Oriole.
GDGD's froze.
Lee Dong.
Lee looks happy. I'm happy for him.
ELL CABILLO!
YES! MOOSES STREAK ENDS TONIGHT!
MFY - 0
ASS - 3
GDGD's still on the Kaz Matsui atbat.
MFY - 0
ASS - 3
Now that's confusing!
Fan interference much? Dumbasses.
slappy with a dong about 1 inch beyond the rf wall.
wow -- totally knocked away by that moran fan.
Hermida yells at the fan in the Astros jersey who knocked the ball out of his glove. That fan'd be lynched in Boston.
By Hermida, I of course mean Pence.
Great ending to the game. Sorry I missed all the thread excitement, but hard to cook and type.
So does that mean Pap gets the W even though he blew the save?
Wake robbed of a W again. Poor Wake.
FLA - 000 100 000 - 1 3 0
FKR - 010 200 10X - 4 5 0

NYY - 023 000 0 - 6

So does that mean Pap gets the W even though he blew the save?
Yep.
Wake robbed of a W again. Poor Wake.
Don't worry about his W/L record -- it's not important.
Just enjoy his 7-4-2-2-6 line.
Evening, chaps. Spent the day wasting the petrol, since, ya know, gas is so cheap these days. But like Manny's planned day off, I had a planned day trip to wander around, and that's what we did. Started off here at home (southern Maine), went west to Concord, NH, then to Keene in the southwestern part of the state. Crossed the border to Brattleboro, Vermont and stopped there for a couple of hours. After that went south to Greenfield, MA and took Route 2 east along the northern part of the state, then headed up 495 and home.
Fantastic day for it, too. I listened to most of the game and thought about you guys and what you'd be saying about all of this. And DAMMIT. There's LIGHTNING near here, and I just got home from a 250 miles run about which means I really shouldn't go back out to try to capture some lightning with my camera. Ah well.
It is pretty dubious to see...
W: Papelbon
L: Lincoln
SV: Hansen
***By the way: Castig and O'Brien interviewed Craig Hansen after the game and Joe asked him if he felt nervous about being called into the game. Hansen said he didn't really think about it, but was kind of surprised because he was in the bathroom in the bullpen when someone knocked on the door and said "Hey, you're going in the game."
So, he gets a save, and a bounce in his step!
NYY - 023 000 012 - 8 12 1
HOU - 300 001 100 - 4 9 0
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show?
