Red Sox - 000 000 030 - 3 5 0Pedroia's three-run home run brought the Sox to within one run with one out in the eighth. Before FY swung, no Boston runners had advanced past second base.
White Sox - 001 020 11x - 5 7 0
But then Ortiz grounded out (and merely jogged down the line, not that the Boston sportswriters noticed or, if they did, thought it worthy of comment), Youkilis walked on four pitches, and Lowell (ahead on the count 3-1) fouled out to the catcher.
Delcarmen allowed a solo home run to Quentin in the bottom half to make the task a bit tougher. In the ninth, Bay flied to deep right-center, Lowrie was hit by a pitch, Varitek was allowed to bat and flew out to shallowish center, and pinch-hitter Casey (who should have hit for Tek) grounded to shortstop on an oops check swing.

The last time the Red Sox played in US Cellular Field (late last August), they scored at least 10 runs in each of the four games (11-3, 10-1, 14-2, 11-1), sweeping the White Sox by a combined score of 46-7. As I wrote at the time, it:
was the first time in major league history that a road team has swept a four-game series with 10 or more runs scored in each game.X-rays of Kevin Youkilis's right hand were negative and he may return to the lineup tonight.
Also, it has been 85 years since an American League team had scored 10+ in each game of a four-game series (the other three times: St. Louis Browns 1920, St. Louis Browns 1922, Colorado Rockies 1996).

lester for 11, yes please.
about a week ago mike and the maddog breaking down numbers and records of what teams records for the remainder of the season would be to have "enough" wins to make it to the postseason. i think the goal number was 92 wins or so. i think that mean the yanks had to go something like 42-19 (im a little fuzzy on the numbers so dont kill me for it). i do remember that the loss column was around 19...
theres no way they lose only 19 games the rest of the way.
redsock has been right this whole time about them not making the post season. its sad it took maddog russo to tell me so.
11 Baseball Legends Who Were Legendary Assholes...funny (interesting) read.
Extra Bases:
"According to a report by ESPN's Buster Olney, it looks like Padres outfielder Brian Giles is going to block a waiver deal that would have sent him to the Red Sox."

I'm back. Got the internet back, and we learned the car is not totaled. Let's just say I hate rental car companies from the very fiber of my being. Because a large number of people within the 18-25 age group are stupid and did stupid shit with rental cars, people aged 21-25 have to pay an underage surcharge - and people under 21 (I'm 20 for another six months), cannot drive at all.
So I'm going along, minding my own business last Thursday, have a one-ton pickup truck run a red light and smash into the side of the car, and a week later I learn it is me who is the one who has to go a month without driving. Through no fault of my own.
So, the moral of the story is, if you're under 21, or if you don't have a major credit card - don't have a crash. Just, don't. Is it your fault? Doesn't matter.
dear lord
Wow, that sucks.

Good: Weekend series with the White Sox mean I can watch on mute at work and am not stuck at home with the Hawk on TV during weeknights.
Bad: Short-staffed at work. Hard to say how much I'll be able to watch tonight.
Good: No exams sunday or monday.
Bad: Exams today and tomorrow (and tuesday) so no games for me.
Ugly: No motivation to study.
Sloppy: After tomorrow's exam - the final summer kegger, entitled "Fuck 3B". The softball league's putting it on with the hopes of hitting 300 kegs for the summer. (3B is the school term I'm in...part B of 3rd year)
Anyhoo, yeah I hear what you're saying ish. Basically anyone under 25 gets fucked before they even get behind a wheel of a car. And if you get in an accident...look out. I can tell you that first hand. It sucks.
It's getting so I'm afraid to click on Tim's links. But the "Legendary Assholes" link was pretty good!
Ish, my condolences on being caught in the young driver gulch. (At least it's a time-limited stereotype, so you can look forward to shedding it soon.)
But the "Legendary Assholes" link was pretty good!
The writer is a bit careless with the facts, though. The story about Comiskey promising a pitcher $$$ for 30 wins (it was Eddie Cicotte) and then benching him is fiction.
redsock: That kind of thing is why I only gave it a "pretty good".
Pretty good beats out some (most) of the rot I've read recently. Sad.
I wasn't saying that in reply to you, just so you know!
At least he didn't repeat the myth about Cobb killing a guy in an alley, right?
sorry ish. really man, what a bummer.
i don't even have my license. growing up in the Boston i was pretty much born on the T. now living in NY i still don't have a need for it.
It's from Cracked, so I didn't really take everything they said as facts. I'd heard some of the other things before though, so I knew that it was at least part-truth. Humorous, at least, I thought.
It's getting so I'm afraid to click on Tim's links. But the "Legendary Assholes" link was pretty good!
Well thats no fun! No need to be a party pooper!
Schedule Blogger outage at 7 PM EST.
That's great nix...with the costs of driving (fuel, car, insurance etc) nowadays, I just want to move to a big city and say fuck it.
I loved the Ulysses Stanton Cellular line. It really cracked me up, for some reason.
ALNM, I would never have expected you to know Bustan Abraham. Are they known outside of Israel? Or is it just an esoteric thing?
Ish, so sorry to hear of your troubles. There's nothing quite like some completely undeserved bad luck leading to more bad luck to fill you with rage.
Here's hoping you are driving again soon. I'm glad you're back here, anyway.
****
No thread for me tonight, at least until later. But worse, no game! I have to get more work done, damnit. Hopefully I will check in before the final out.

I think I read some speculation (though I don't remember where) that rising gas prices will lead to a re-urbanization of the US for exactly this reason.
Shit, it's already the case that some wealthy people have their vacation home in the downtown areas.
I think I read some speculation (though I don't remember where) that rising gas prices will lead to a re-urbanization of the US for exactly this reason.
I've read that too. But it can only happen if people can afford housing in cities, and if there are jobs. Since the cities have been de-industrialized, I'm not sure how that would work.

I don't really know how much they're known outside Israel, but I'm a very active pursuer of the Middle Eastern scene here in NYC. They've performed here more than once. They're pretty well known in that community (as a group and as individual musicians.)

AWESOME.
for the longest time i've been looking to see live sitar music, endless searches and nothing comes up. do you know of regular spots where this sort of entertainment occurs?
I've read that too. But it can only happen if people can afford housing in cities, and if there are jobs. Since the cities have been de-industrialized, I'm not sure how that would work.
amen, its all good in theory. but i know more and more people moving away from the city because its so expensive. hell, im going to be one of them soon. car expenses and gas $$ will be a piece of piss compared to the rent i pay, not to mention the other expenses they bend you over for around here..
Nix, there used to be a restaurant on E6th Street that had live sitar music some nights, but it's been years and I don't know if they still do. I'm moderately sure that there is live Indian music somewhere in the city (one hears things).
ALNM, i'll poke my head around E6th to see if its still a-heppenin'.
oh im sure there's live indian music going on, i just can't find it! sometimes thats almost a disadvantage to living in NY. you know EVERYTHING is here, its how to go about looking for it. and sometimes it can be very frustration.
"i've been looking to see live sitar music, "
I was gonna say "east 6th St.".... got beaten to that one. But one of the places on the south side of the street always has live music. This is on the strip of 6th with all the Indian restaurants. (btwn 1st and 2nd?)

Things have gotten out of hand.
Well, you don't expect us to pay in money, do you?
Actually, if you can't tell which place has the live music, just ask the dudes out on the sidewalk, they're always out there trying to get you to choose their place. In fact, I bet if you asked, the guy would be like "Yeah, sure we have music!" and then go run out and find a sitar and bring it back and start playing while you eat... so you'd have that at the very least....
As far as actual Indian/sitar clubs, I have no idea.
ha, thanks jere. yeah looking for more of a small concert setting, if you will.
Nix, you also might want to check out Drom - a wonderful place which just might have a sitar playing at some time in the future. (I don't have time at the moment to look at their schedule, but it's the kind of thing they do.)
And with that... I must leave you all. (Missing the game(s) tonight, alas, but I trust you've got that covered!)
thanks you ALNM.

Guess Youk's OK.
Did I mis-hear, or did Heidi ask Nick Swisher how it feels to be in his "first pennant race"?
Macha just said he once told Swisher he'd give him $100 if he hit a ball over the left-center field fence, and he did. So I Googled it to see if this was a known story, and I found this similar story from 9/06:
"Swisher has more homers (33) than doubles (23) this year, and Macha told him earlier in the week he'd give him $50 for every double he hits the rest of the season. "I'm trying to get him to hit the ball to the opposite-field gap," Macha said. "Since then he's hit two doubles. I called Milton (Bradley) over in the clubhouse and said, 'I want you to be my witness,' and I gave Swisher $100." "
Did Ken "mis-remember" or was he regularly handing out bills?
I say either misremembering or the LCF/100 was a one-time thing.

ocoC rakes against Buehrle
Have fun, guys! I'll check back in later.
Baltimore's kicking Detroit's ass. That's just sad.
So nice to be in a game thread again.
Baltimore's kicking Detroit's ass. That's just sad.
Texas actually.
Buehrle's on pace for 104 pitches. :/
Fine. Oakland's kicking Detroit's ass, which is pretty sad too.
No-no's by both starting pitchers, has it ever happened?
Uribe's got such a strong arm.
RAKE.
That bat boy is QUICK!
Drew broke his bat, and the camera angle showed the ball and bat moving, and then when they cut back to Drew, he had a new bat in hand. That was barely 10 seconds!
Pierzynski looks like Bart Simpson with that hair.
When a hitter is using a maple bat I'm sure the BB keeps a backup in his hands.
I think I remember a double no-no being broken in the 10th. One guy got it, the other had to settle for the ol' no hitter through 9 loss.
No-no's by both starting pitchers, has it ever happened?
Do you mean two pitchers who have thrown no-hitters? Or two pitches who throw no-hitters?
I'm sure the first thing is yes, the second? Not sure. I know of a pitcher who's thrown a no-hitter and lost...
No duel-no-no's tonight.
No-no's by both starting pitchers, has it ever happened?
Yes. Once.
Fred Toney (Reds) Jim Vaughn (Cubs)
Weeghman Park (later Wrigley field)
May 2, 1917
There was a 10th inning hit & run
details (scroll)
ofer is correct!
Per Wikipedia:
On May 2, 1917, a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds reached the end of nine innings in a hitless scoreless tie, the only time in baseball history that neither team has had a hit in regulation. Both Hippo Vaughn of the Cubs and Fred Toney of the Reds continued pitching into the tenth inning. Vaughn lost his no-hitter in the top of the tenth, as the Reds got two hits and scored the winning run. Toney retired the side in the bottom of the tenth and recorded a ten-inning no-hitter. This game was long considered a "double no-hitter," but Vaughn is no longer credited with a no-hitter under the current rules.
When a hitter is using a maple bat I'm sure the BB keeps a backup in his hands.
Oh I bet.
Wow I got messed up with that liner to Lowrie. Looked like it was way over his head then he casually jumped up and caught it.
The jedi controls his emotions, remains steady, and uses the force.
Yeah, meant both throw a no hitter in the same game.
Actually, both starters tonight each have one.
It would have been a HUGE stretch for either of these teams to have been no-hit tonight.
Papi's numbers post Manny are horrible. I figured his walks would go way up but his K's are what's gone up.
Granted he's still getting his timing back...
OTT
Yeah, I keep seeing Ortiz's problems as being his timing and not so much not seeing any pitches. Although there's been that too.
Lau-rie Method-rie.
Hey, now that there are a few more old people here I can try out all my 70s/80s references that have fallen on deaf eyes in the past.
Like "Charlie Lau" and his "method" of hitting
I'd say "is anyone else going to Futures at Fenway tomorrow" but no one seems to be here..
Like "Charlie Lau" and his "method" of hitting
Jere I googled it to see if it would jog my memory but I got nuthin.
Is it George Washington? No, it's Jerry Remy.
I'd say "is anyone else going to Futures at Fenway tomorrow" but no one seems to be here..
I thought about it, but it wouldn't be possible, with the car situation, etc.
Lau's method. I actually didn't know A-Rod benefitted from it. Screw it!
understandable, ish
Lester pitching well enough to have people say "he pitched well enough to win" at the end of the game.
I actually didn't know A-Rod benefitted from it. Screw it!
That's almost as bad as ARods "Pete Rose Text hitting method". (I'd put the link here but I'm not smart)
"I hit solid with an accelerated bat head."
Could it be they actually fell for the big swing and posturing by the hitter, and thought it was gonna be deeper.
Can't take these antics by Bay.
Gah. Bermuda Triangle in the outfield.
Lester is pitching well. Not crazy awesome, but he's only allowed one run - it's up to the bats now. Although now Lester's now in a jam and he's got to put his Houdini costume on.
Jon-K Lesterzaka.
COCK.
Feels like 10-0 now.
from houdini to who's warming
bats'll wakey wakey soon
wait, that ball bounced off his foot all the way to the stands on a fly?
Time to put up a 3 spot.
Truped on that one. Better that way.
Hey gang, we're down in Duck, NC this week with my family, so I've been pretty out of it, but I seem to have some internet right now, so I thought I'd come check in.
Where'd we leave the bats?
I finally get to tune in, just in time to see the score from 1-0 to 3-0. Insult to injury, it's the Chicago broadcast, and you know what that means.
I think I'll watch the rest w/o the computer. After I scroll through the thread, of course.
yeah.
mmhmm.
right.
oh sorry, I'm just talking to someone you can't hear.
my last post was a reference to Remy talking to the dudes who did the flyover-who aren't mic'd. if you don't have NESN
Sarah and I both popping in at the same time. Quiet thread tonight. About to get quieter...
Good thing you explained that, Jere. :)
Bye now.
Papi with a 2-out traveling violation
Runs would be nice.
stabbed by Lester
Oi. NESN has one operating camera, and they're actually borrowing it. Heard about a sort of power outage for the cameras.
wow, this is cool. watching on a single, borrowed camera.
that was really weird.
It was cool, though. Interesting to see the ball coming towards you, especially with the curve ball.
And a fantastic curve tonight for Buehrle.
Excuse me! hit.
Guillen: "I would much prefer Jason Bay to come to the plate 20 times in this series than Manny Ramirez."
a sad state of affairs.
Trying to thread and follow the game on GDGD is way too much for me, I don't have the slightest idea how those of you who are able to do that, er, DO THAT.
I'll be back with you next week.
In the meantime, I would really appreciate some RUNS.
Okay, I'm here. "Dinner break"!
Bats seem pretty comatose.
Remy: Hawk's throwing t-shirts out of his booth, so I'm throwing a dollar bill out of mine.
Hawk on mute.
Let's so, Sid. One more inning.
How about Remy throws himself out of the booth?
Uribe, Urout!!!
I got truped on that one.
Great eyes, guys! Just let Cabrera score.
Horrible
bad cam-work didn't allow me to see, but I feel like we should've had OCab out.
STUPID STUPID STUPID BASEBALL, FELLAS.
When I said "runs", I meant for us.
he fucking stopped at third, even!!!
yeah but Remy, if Pedroia keeps running at the runner... or if Lowrie catches it and throws home... we had a chance, I htink
Jere, I agree. They were running after Pierzynski while Cabrera broke for home, and no throw. They didn't even look.
Remy: "It's hard to fault the Red Sox."
Pierzynski started for second, Cabrera stopped - Pedroia had to get rid of the ball either to go after Pierzynski or hold onto it and deal with second and third. The second Pedroia threw over to Lowrie, Cabrera started home.
Didn't look like Lowrie had a chance of getting O-Cab anyways.
Here comes the Chicago bullpen. Can we greet them with some bats?
Okay, make it moot, boys. 5 runs!
Something that will never happen to Pedroia again.
I wasn't really expecting Cabrera to come home so quickly. AJ was so caught in the basepaths that Pedroia couldn't just hold the ball.
But if he did, the inning would have continued without the run scoring and runners on second and third. We'd still be pissed about it, I'm sure.
i dont give a fuck what remy says, even run the ball back in, we cant afford another run there the way our shit lineup is hitting.
Manny, are you watching that Pedroia play??????
Now pitching: Don't ask, Dotel.
as soon as Lowrie catches it, Cab is only a few feet off of third.
and FY: he threw when he thought the runner was going to 2nd, knowing the runner at 3rd had stopped. Unfortunately, the instant he threw, both things changed--runner stopped between 1st and 2nd, and OCab bolted for home. So had he held it and kept running, they would've got the guy btwn 1st and second since he stopped heading toward second right at that moment. I guess run still might have scored--BUT, if he's still holding it, he SEES OCab heading home, and throws there.
This cannot be squandered.
Can. Not. Be.
I just got back from taking one of our kittens to the animal hospital where they are keeping her overnight. She was running a fever, and they weren't sure why. So I need a win to cheer me up. Come on, you jerks. Get some runs.
eff why!
FY
That helps!
Good start. Keep it going.
don't leave, Amy
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAHHH
turn on that inside shit
Maybe kittens have random fevers the way human babies sometimes do.
SUPRISE SUPRISE THAT RUN COMES UP BIG RIGHT NOW
HE GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
From
6 outs to get 4 runs
to
5 outs to get 1 run
Do-able.
Phil, that's sort of what we are hoping. Our daughter had such a fever when she was 2 months old. They did a spinal tap because they were concerned about meningitis since she had no cold symptoms. She turned out to just have some virus and was fine. We are hoping that we are as lucky with the kitten.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Nice hustle, Flo............
Any ideas for what message you put in a wedding shower card?
Not himk, not herk, not themk, not mek but Youk. Let's go!
Nothing like pitching changes after 1 batter to just move the game along.
Actually, I shouldn't complain; it's the top of the 8th and we're only about 2 hours and 5 minutes in. That's like a Little League game by comparison.
Oh, and evening, everybody.
terrible call by Remy, missing the really big blow that did land in that KC-CHi fight
who you got next, ozzie???
Man...small sample size and all, but Tizzle in the 7 games this month has a .350 OPS. That is, erm, bad.
The Cell readying their mock cheer...
and there she is
key play by guy in front row, letting catcher get it. he better not have been a Red Sox fan.
sure glad we have lowell in that cleanup spot. hes sucks as of late. what a downer.
Missed that FY home run. Something crept up real quickly. But I'm not complaining. I like the 3-spot. Too bad they couldn't tack on more.
Oh well. 3 more outs to do it.
shitty hack by the doctor.
bay, jedi, varitek in the 9th
I'm sorry, but you gotta give credit to the Sling-Dog guy. He gets the exact window, and the doof doesn't even TRY to catch it.

Once again I say... OH COCK.
Fucking hell.
I'm sorry, but you gotta give credit to the Sling-Dog guy. He gets the exact window, and the doof doesn't even TRY to catch it.

hey, a reference to my own blog. nice job....

Well, it's a card for just the bride. Also, the groom's a dick.
Damn. Too bad it wasn't acceptable to just write that in the card.
"A baby girl was born in Minnesota today, 8.8.08 at 8:08 AM weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces."
and sadly got ate by eight dingos eight minutes later.
2-1 LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA on A-Rod dong.
LOL, Phil, now I see the problem. Perhaps just say Congratulations, and we hope you will be happy with the dick, but if not, get out fast?
"Your husband's a dick. Maybe this card'll make right."
Time to abuse Mr. Jenks.
ish, that sort of thing is so outlandish it has to be true.
2 runs, boys. Get to it!
How about "you won't need all the dildos you'll get at the shower cuz you already have a DICK."
"A baby girl was born in Minnesota today, 8.8.08 at 8:08 AM weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces."
and sadly got ate by eight dingos eight minutes later.
8 Is Enough
"Best wishes. Hope your husband doesn't turn out to as big an annoying asshole as Hawk Harrelson."
and sadly got ate by eight dingos eight minutes later.
Bit by eight poisonous spiders eight minutes, eight seconds later.
