Red Sox - 300 002 000 - 5 7 2I wasn't able to watch much of this one, but after Mike Lowell's three-run home run in the first, there wasn't much to see.
White Sox - 014 010 00x - 6 9 2
Buchholz lasted only three innings (3-7-5-2-4, 74). Down by one run, Boston loaded the bases in the seventh on three consecutive walks, but Dotel came in to get Lowell to hit into a double play and end the potential rally.
Los Angeles capped their first sweep of New York at home in 13 years with a 4-3 walk-off win (Chone Figgins's single off Mariano Rivera scored Howie Kendrick). Tampa beat Seattle 11-3 for their 71st win, a franchise record.
The Red Sox are 4.5 GB the Rays, while the Yankees fell to 8.5 GB.

Clay Buchholz (5.94, 75 ERA+) / Gavin Floyd (3.66, 122 ERA+)
Buchholz has a 6.59 ERA in his five starts since being recalled from Pawtucket. ... Last Tuesday, Floyd went only four innings against the Tigers, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks.
Boston has been either 3 GB or 3.5 GB for the last nine days. Since July 30, the Sox and Rays have mirrored each other almost identically:
Tampa Bay has won 70 games this year -- tying a franchise record set in 2004. They have 46 chances to set a new record. ... Roughly halfway through a soft early August schedule -- Cleveland, Seattle, Oakland, Texas -- the Rays are 4-2.Rays - WxWWWLWWLWW

This date in baseball history:
1904 - Jack Chesbro [Highlanders] is knocked out by the White Sox after pitching 30 complete games in a row.
1944 - Red Barrett of the Boston Braves throws only 58 pitches and shuts out the Cincinnati Reds 2-0. This is the major-league record for fewest pitches in a nine-inning game. The game takes one hour, 15 minutes, the shortest night game ever.
1971 - Sixteen baseball researchers at Cooperstown form the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), with founder Robert Davids as president.
1978 - The Red Sox trip the Indians, 6-5, in 13 innings as Butch Hobson scores the tying run on a bizarre play: He lofts a pop fly behind second base and races around to 2B as 2B Duane Kuiper loses the ball in the sun. Kuiper picks up the ball but bumps into 1B Andre Thornton and the ball rolls towards first base and C Bo Diaz. With Hobson motoring towards 3B, Diaz overthrows the base. Hobson, having slid into the third, picks himself up and races home. The throw from the outfield is in time to Diaz, but he can't get the ball out of his glove and a sliding Hobson is home free. A George Scott double and Rick Burleson single then wins the game. [box]
1999 - The Red Sox defeat the Royals, 9-6, as Boston P Tim Wakefield ties a major league record by striking out four batters in the 9th inning. [box]

AB: "Though Kevin Youkilis was in the original lineup for today's game, he was scratched about 20 minutes ago with soreness in his left shoulder. Apparently it's been bothering him for a few days.
Also -- Tim Wakefield has been put on the DL.
(link below the game post)
Bugger.
Well, at least Boston is in better shape in that regard than Chicago, with Contreras' Achilles.
what have youk and wake been doing together????
this lineup i like a little more than the others (aside the fact that youk isnt in it and cora). i like drew behind papi, but as i say that, the numbers 0-4 jump into my head. hope i didnt jinx ya there JD.
I CANT BELIEVE THOSE "NEVER SAY DIE" RAYS.
I bet they were pole dancing.
HH needs a good start PLEASE
I love Pee Wee, but this "road game hit streak" thing is bogus. Streaks are streaks. There are no home streaks and away streaks. He's just hitting a ton.
In other news, the Rays are incredible. If (when?) they win the division, it will be well deserved.
I think we're looking at the wild card now, and the Yankees are looking at nothing. I can live with it. I'll be happy for Tampa.
Seriously, I will.
DONG!
holy shit i didnt think it had a chance, the way the guy was tracking it!
YEAH!
DOCTOR DONG!!! Mikey's back :)
I agree with ya, L. FY doesn't think to himself at Fenway, eh, I don't need to hit here.
Busy with work -- and the team decides to start hitting right out of the gate. Pfft.
Shut 'em down, Laptop!
Go go Mike Lowell!
(All right, I'm a little late).
i-girl. i'm with you. they do deserve SOMETHING. they've played great baseball all year.
Apparently Youk is going for a better contract. Or perhaps he wants to be traded.
HH needs to be the new wakefield now. Just stop sucking Clay. Just stop it.
I hate when Cora plays.
Wow, that was a cool catch!
Why is Ellsbury such a sexual dynamo?
air jordan
O'Brien: "Pierzynski's got the Marilyn Monroe hair-do going..."
AJ is prolly number two right behind arbreu on the I HATE THIS FUCKING GUY list.
Castig said: Ken Griffey Jr has played two games in a row.
Total deadpan. Cute.
Nix, you called me i-girl. You must be a troll.
Troll!!!!!
whoa, i NEVER make that mistake.
Ride, Captain, ride!
Close!
Swisher: I'm In LOVE with myself!
wow, if tek and corer are hitting the ball hard off of this guy, today should be a good day.
I loved seeing the double-steal last inning with FY and On Fire
There he goes!
There he goes!
Michael Kay
The only thing wrong with the radio broadcast is I can't see LBJ!!
fuck... no.
ok HH shut em DOWN
The only thing wrong with the radio broadcast is I can't see LBJ!!
HAHA J-GIRL
Wouldn't you think it'd be weird to play against a team you used to play for, at their home ballpark, and your picture and name are on their wall?
The picture of Frank Thomas reminds me of that. I wonder how he feels about that when he comes to Chicago in an Oakland uniform.
I can't decide if I like Heidi's newly styled hair or if I think it's just a mess.
I think it's a mess.
Hooray for TBS's national broadcasts.
Stop making fun of |aura.
HH is weird.
Throwing over to first when the guy's standing on the base.
ish, the windy city making heidi look like a wild one.
Throw strikes, asshole.
ok boy, here comes the "big inning"?
thanks fil and mixon.
Ugh. National Weather Service cut-ins for severe thunderstorms. I don't like living in a big county. You get a thunderstorm 30-40 miles north of here and they cut in to the game.
Remember we were all going to move to Chile so we'd be in the same time zone.
Thanks, Ramirez.
The SBN guys can't get over that last pitch.
44 pitches through two, but at least only one run.
Remember we were all going to move to Chile so we'd be in the same time zone.
China also uses the same time zone throughout the whole country.
The part that doesn't make sense is, China's wider than the US and Canada. Communist thing.
HAHAHAHAHA Tool.
You suck, Pierzynski.
Chicago broadcasters making excuses.
Afternoon, everybody. Just had some McDonald's, and it's sitting like a lead weight in my stomach. I always tell myself I'm going to stop eating there, and myself never listens.
How has Clay looked so far today?
Fuck.
crap
What's the attraction, Tony? I find McD's incredibly easy to avoid.
Oh, Christ. Well, that answered my question.
l-girl...probably just weakness. I grew up eating fast food (accounting for my pudgy adolescence), and even now that I'm older and know to stay away from that crap, sometimes the temptation is too great. Besides, hot McDonald's fries taste great.
Looks like we'll see Rocco Baldelli this season after all. Carl Crawford on the DL, they activiated the second coming of Joe DiMaggio.
Fuck you, HH.
Fuck me...Clay gets to 0-2 on Dye and then gives up a base hit. Story of his season.
I really hope his problems are physical and not psychological; a hitch in motion is correctable. Mind troubles are much, much harder.
Tony, if you give it up entirely for a decent amount of time, you might find it makes you sick when you eat it again.
FUCKING THOME
Aardvark warming.
And RIGHT as I post that, a 2-run bomb. I hate to say it, but this is a lost season for him. At least Hughes had the decency to get hurt and stay hurt. Running Clay out every fifth day is more or less guaranteed loss territory now.
sorry, but clay suchhz
l-girl, it does make me sick occasionally. But then, so does pizza, and Lord knows I can't give that up. It's my favorite food.
At least I eat fast food much, much less regularly now than even 3 or 4 years ago. I don't know how much healthier I am, but I'm sure I'm healthier now than before.
or should I say
FUCKING HH
Get him the fuck out of there, Tito. Konerko's 3/4 of the way to being cooked and he just got a hit.
Angels being angelic.
well, less is good. i guess i just don't understand it. there are plenty of things in my life i'd have trouble giving up. mcd's wasn't one of them. each to her/his own!
Viva la difference, l-girl! :)
One of the hardest things for me to give up was Slurpees, which I loved as a kid but now know are essentially liquid sugar. The fact that I lived for a year in Michigan, where there are relatively few 7-11s, helped greatly.
And thank GOD that inning is over. At least Dice's start last night makes it a little easier to use the pen.
Wow, hard to give up Slurpees! Artifical colour, artificial flavour and HFCS. I've never been anywhere near one of those.
(Believe me, I have my vices.)
Fast food is the comestible equivalent of crack. Or porn. Maybe both. Crack and porn.
I guess. It doesn't appeal to me, personally. (Neither do crack or porn, actually.) But I see the effect on people I know...
SoSH:
"Clay Buchholz is the real life Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh "
Crack and porn, now there are some vices I can get behind.
Tony, how old are you? That could be the big difference here. I did eat McD's occasionally in my younger, thinner, less healthy days.
l-girl, I'm 26. I think that probably explains some of it. My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy, and we've paid the consequences. I know I have, at least; my metabolism is inchworm-slow and I battle putting on weight constantly.
Crack and porn, I will say, are not vices I have. Yet.
My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy, and we've paid the consequences. I know I have, at least; my metabolism is inchworm-slow and I battle putting on weight constantly.
sounds like a cop-out to me buddy-boy.
no offense but i'm a part of "your generation" and i find that our generation was raised to make a lot of excuses for itself.
My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy
Say what?!
My son is, essentially, the same age you are, and my impression when he was growing up was that we (the parents) were all OBSESSED with making sure our kids only ate healthy stuff.
Maybe that was only a local phenomenon, but I'm curious about why you think an entire generation was left untrained in healthy eating.
i hope this is the last of clay for a while, but i know it wont be. ugh
Okay, forgive the broad generalization. *I* was not raised to eat healthy. I'm not going to cop out or make excuses; certainly I could've chosen to not eat terribly for most of my life, but did so anyway. Like I said, I've just recently tried to undo years of damage. Believe me, being overweight sucks.
Hey, it's Aardsma. Yay?
I'm 26. I think that probably explains some of it. My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy, and we've paid the consequences.
Sorry, but that is just plain horseshit. You're of the generation that has put organic, vegetarian and the slow food movement on the map.
My siblings and sibs-in-laws have learned how to eat healthfully from their kids, who are 23, 25 and 27. They are all into eating organic, whole foods, cooking, growing food, etc.
Even if you were raised to eat poorly, you're an adult now. You make your own choices.
Choose to eat unhealthfully if you want, but don't blame "your generation".
Being overweight and eating healthfully are two different things. I eat super healthfully and am overweight. I was much thinner when I ate crappy food.
Didn't mean to pile on there, I was typing my comment before I saw the others!
SoSH:
David "I'm Fixing to Whiff Some People" Aardsma
tony, you can do it! have faith in yrself
Or don't have faith, just watch Supersize Me every morning. :)
Thanks! Believe me, it's tough, but I'm giving it a good try. I have nothing but time right now; it'd be stupid NOT to use it wisely.
How great would it be for Aardsma to get out of this pickle unscathed?
And he does it! WHEW. Go Aardvark.
Tony, that's cool. All you can do is try.
Way to go, Aardsma!
How great would it be for Aardsma to get out of this pickle unscathed?
That great!
l-girl...have to disagree. Do, or do not. There is no try.
Now THERE'S something my generation can relate to. :D
RUNS MOTHERFUCKERS!
Hey, don't be hitting my boy!
Two guys on, no outs. Push 'em across, for the love of Pete!
Tony, there is no doing without trying. If you don't try, you don't do.
You might try and not succeed. But if you don't try, you definitely will not succeed.
I don't even understand that sentence "there is no try".
l-girl, sorry...just making a bad Star Wars joke. Yoda says that in "The Empire Strikes Back".
Star Wars is definitely one of my vices.
Damn it, FY.
Aw, shit.
Oh duh. I'm a huge Star Wars fan too (only first 3, tho, NO OTHERS). Tho it's been a long time since I saw any of them.
But one thing you gotta know about these threads, I will never understand any sarcasm or any references to anything outside the thread. I will only make a fool of myself. :)
losers
the red sox that is, not star wars people (well only the ones that dress up and go to the theaters)
No prob, l-girl. I have so much stuff fly over my head, you might as well call me "Middle America". :)
The worst thing about that inning was that Tizzle grounded out on the FIRST PITCH. A little patience, maybe, pretty please with sugar on top?
middle america, ha ha. maybe i'll start calling myself flyover country.
there's something about the game threads that shorts out my sarcasm detector
only a couple of minutes til i get to hear the sweet bliss that is michael kay's voice (KIDDING!)
even i would have known that was sarcasm
radio guys are telling stories about ted williams and moose skowron. skowron works for the white sox now and was regaling them with old yankees/red sox stories.
2-0 yanks already. ugh
Maybe the angelic Angels will score 8 runs in the 8th (or whatever it was) again...
must buy volvo... must buy volvo...
I can only guess that play was as bad as Gameday described it.
ON FIRE!
ON FIRE!!!!
THE NATURAL
DJ WERD!
I really love that nickname.
Oh, turds. PLEASE don't leave Drew on 3rd base.
Thank you, Bay!
No turds - JayBay!
Mayor McSingle!
"Boston threatening dangerously" - Juan Baez
angels over aggressive baseball leads to the strike em out/throw em out DP with vlad out at third. stupid
RALLY TIME!!!!!!
good AB so far for tek.
COM ON!
PIERZYNSKIBALLA!!!
YEAH!!!!!!!!!
JUST TEK BEING AJ!
Is that an RBI?
Productive strikeout there...
Jedi for Cora!
Manny just got hit with what looked like a ball to the head. Helmet, I mean.
Gee, thanks, Tek. God damn it.
Is that an RBI?
No - First base was occupied, even though Casey went to second base. If Tek reaches first base it'd be an RBI, but he was called out as first base was occupied.
Spoke too soon, I guess!
Gotta love the K RBI (yeah, yeah, I know he doesn't get the rbi...)
And gotta love proactive Tito, too.
Miss that ball you shouldn't have.
RATS.
A run is, anyway, a run.
Miss that ball you shouldn't have.
:D
Ah, yoda's back.
Yup, definitely hit in the helmet.
Okay, just another minute and I'll be back for the remainder (I hope).
ALNM, was he knocked down?
HEIDI
Carlos Pena was put on the DL... sublimation of a tendon in his finger, apparently. He said he felt something "pop", and the Rays think he could be done for the season.
L-girl, it knocked his helmet off. Weirdly, he was actually ducking when it hit him. He didn't even seem very shook up, just kind of shook his head and took his base.
Another good thing about radio: no Heidi!
That's Pena and Crawford on the DL.
Siddown, punks! Justin's your master, son!
thanks alnm
are you following both teams now, sox and dodgers?
L, actually it was Crawford I was talking about. Don't know why I thought Pena.
Hmm, I missed it, but I think Dave Roberts and his mad baserunning skillz just got SF another run.
That's 3 out of 4 of their recent runs.
Ish, that makes more sense. I posted that a while back. They've activated Baldelli.
Angels have tied it at 2 in the 3rd, two men on, no outs.
I'm following Manny. (And Yoyo, as efd well knows.) The net effect is that it's opening up a whole new world of baseball enjoyment to me. I'll have to write about it someday. (But I promised a friend that my next blog post would be about mathematics!)
Go to it, you angelic Angels!
CNN.com has reported Isaac Hayes has passed on. RIP, Chef.
For the record, it doesn't take much for Manny's hat or helmet to fall off his head.
COME ON FIRE!
YO DJ PUMP THIS PARTY
Hmm, I missed it, but I think Dave Roberts and his mad baserunning skillz just got SF another run.
Ex-Red Sox are why I became sort of interested in the Mets. Now the Dodgers, Pirates, etc etc etc etc.
is thornton getting squeezed or what? seems like he threw a number of strikes to FY and Flo than did not get called.
Moss in Pittsburgh:
8 games, 33 PA, 6 for 29, 2B, HR, 4 BB, 12 Ks
4 RBI too.
For the record, it doesn't take much for Manny's hat or helmet to fall off his head.
True, but it got hit pretty solidly in the middle of its target area.
I think it was the fact that he was on his way down at the moment it hit that kept the energy of the contact from being transferred to his head, and instead it just pushed the helmet off his head (assentially, he was ducking out of the helmet at just the moment of the hit). Quite something.
For the record, it doesn't take much for Manny's hat or helmet to fall off his head.
The KC anncrs who were making me puke the other night were using that. "At least Jason Bay's helmet will fit over his head..."
Walking the ballpark!
COME ON OLD MAN LOWELL!
Bases are drunk!
I've got a fever, and the only prescription...is more doubles!
KC ANNOUNCERS:
"AT LEAST JASON BAY IS WHITE!"
ugh
I always have a soft spot for the Dodgers. But I can't imagine trying to follow more than one team at a time. I admire the effort!
That's *essentially*, of course.
What my subconscious kicks up...
Well, it doesn't matter how you feel about whether his hat/helmet stays on - the fact is it's not easy for them to come off somehow.
KC ANNOUNCERS:
"AT LEAST JASON BAY IS WHITE!"
They said everything but. It was nauseating.
i think ive seen every manny at bat since he left us.
Watch your back, Thornton. Yesterday's losing pitcher was farmed out to AAA.
in honor of jere
"dont ask, dotel"
They were listing all the things Sox fans supposedly "won't miss". We supposedly won't miss the way Manny's helmet doesn't fit b/c of his wild hair.
I better change the subject in my head, I'm getting angry all over again!
must buy volvo... must buy volvo...
"AT LEAST JASON BAY IS WHITE!"
Oh yeah. I've kind of gotten that feeling from people. Bay is white so therefore he hustles and his hat stays on.
COCK.
Lowell's brutal.
:O
in honor of jere
"dont ask, dotel"
i made that "joke" the other night.
i think ive seen every manny at bat since he left us.
wow, that is so cool.
clearly our cult leader.
SHIT DOCTOR DP
MOTHERFUCKER
DOA from the Doc.
this lineup effing blows in big situations
For the love of God, just put that in the air and the game's probably tied. That shit hurts.
But I can't imagine trying to follow more than one team at a time.
It would help a lot if I had more than one brain.
I think I've said this before... oddly, one thing that makes it possible to follow two things at once seems to be that I'm listening to the Spanish broadcast of the Red Sox game. It's as if one part of my brain is paying attention to one game in Spanish and another part is paying attention to the second game in English. I find this fascinating in itself. (and, for the record, my Spanish isn't all that great. I can just about follow 70% of the discussion at this point. But I've had the same kind of experience reading in English and listening to a conversation in French at the same time, for example. It's very weird.)
its hard follwing everything. ive got 5 channels going back and forth: SOX/MFY/FKR/MANNY/METS (i like it when they win as the MFY fans get in a tizzy)
Getting 70% of a Spanish-language broadcast is very good. I'm closer to 40%. I can get the gist, but actual conversation, closer to 40-50%.
That was in NYC. We don't have Spanish-language baseball anymore.
Lowell is really hurting the team right now. DL pls.
Lowell is really hurting the team right now. DL pls.
yeah, that 3 run HR in the 1st really hurt us today.
Nix, I'm following 3 or 4 games at a time but am blacked out from the NYY and Mets (heh, I just typed "Mates" and had to correct it) on MLB.TV...
Did not know he hit a HR in the first. Got home during the 4th. either way, he has been not good during a time where he's obviously injured
Lowell's had his struggles recently - shit, he ain't the only one - but something needs to be done with Clay, first and foremost.
All our parts are not clicking, for sure. But what's up with "something must be done"? This is the team. What else you got in mind?
ALNM, its tough isnt it? my girlfriend hates me hates me, to that i reply to her "it could be worse, i could be watching (insert whatever horrible tv shows there are on today)"
I love masterson
when you see those surveys about how much TV people watch, i always think, does baseball count? i watch baseball almost every night, but it's not like watching tv. you know?
l-girl...honestly, I have no idea. Just frustrated with Clay, that's all. They're not sticking him in the pen, they won't DFA him at this point, but the thought of him every 5th day worries the hell out of me.
Frack. Work.
Pls get multiple runs in my absence.
it's frustrating. but if we lose him, who takes his spot?
I have to work too. The annoying kind of work that I can't listen to a game during.
RUNS PLEASE
That's the other thing too, l-girl. Everybody else is either hurt or not as good as Clay, even right now.
Damn it, Bay.
