Yankees - 133 510 312 - 19 20 0Ouch. There were some bright spots in this one, though.
Red Sox - 300 110 003 - 8 13 1
Jacoby Ellsbury and Kevin Youkilis both homered in the first inning. Ellsbury went 4-for-5 and stole his 50th base of the season -- only the third player in Red Sox history to do so.
Gil Velazquez and George Kottaras both got their first major league hit tonight. Velaquez hit an RBI single off the left field wall in the fourth and Kottaras smacked an opposite field double into the left field corner in the fifth.
And Chris Smith put a zero on the board in the top of the sixth, denying New York the chance at becoming the first team in American League history to score in all nine innings of a game.
***
Game back on at 11:05.
***
Another rain delay (tarp out at 10:26) in the top of the 5th, no outs for New York.
Tampa Bay lost (again!) to Detroit, 6-4, but if the Red Sox cannot come back in this one, the Rays will clinch the East tonight. Perhaps this debacle will be washed away.
***
After a rain delay of about 90 minutes, the game is on. David Pauley has replaced Dice as the Boston starter.
***
Alfredo Aceves (1.38, 311 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.80, 163 ERA+)
While the Red Sox are preparing for both scenarios, the general feeling in the front office is that the Angels will choose the ALDS schedule that begins on Wednesday rather than Thursday, allowing both clubs to use only three starting pitchers. As the Globe notes:
Such a scenario defies the popular theory that the Angels would opt to start Thursday, thereby preventing the Sox from using Josh Beckett and Jon Lester twice. ...Terry Francona plans to use Mike Lowell at DH tonight and have him play third base on Sunday.
The Angels have their reasons for starting Wednesday. Los Angeles would be able to go with a three-man rotation of John Lackey, Ervin Santana, and Joe Saunders, bypassing Jon Garland and Jered Weaver.
In the case of a playoff emergency, the Sox purchased the contract of Gil Velazquez, 28. And he made his major league debut last night, after 11 years and nearly 1,000 minor league games.
With three games remaining, Dustin Pedroia has 211 hits, good for 5th place on Boston's all-time single-season list. He needs two more to tie Jim Rice's 1978 total of 213. Tops on the list? Wade Boggs, with 240 in 1985 (which included a team-record 187 singles). Pedroia is the first Red Sox player to get 200 hits in a season in ten years (Mo Vaughn: 205, in 1998).
Jacoby Ellsbury has a career-high 16-game hitting streak (25-for-72, .347).
***
For the Yankees, Aceves, a 25-year-old RHP, has made two relief appearances and three starts (log) since joining the Yankees at the end of August: 26 IP, 20 H, 6 BB, 15 K. Was Watching: "I've seen his height listed as low as 5′ 10″ and as high as 6′ 1″ - and his weight is between 150 and 176 pounds ..." And BR and MLB list him at 6-3, 220!
Other news from New York is that Mariano Rivera left the team and went back to New York for a precautionary MRI. However, Joe Girardi lied to the media about this before the game and then stubbornly stuck to his bogus story even after various writers said they had gotten the truth from Brian Cashman. ... Peter Abraham (LoHud) has audio: "It has gotten to the point where team officials now apologize to reporters for the manager's actions. Nobody is sure why he does it because he gets caught every time."
And the New York Times mentions Hank Steinbrenner's "mission of contributing imbecility to every publication that will have him". Perfect!

Same in Portsmouth too.
New England Cable News shows a lull in the action for tomorrow afternoon - just in time to get at least most of tomorrow's game in. 3:55 start.
I wasn't gonna mention this because it's basketball, but I envision me months from now here saying, "oh, yeah, I got my Celtics tickets back in September" and people getting pissed at me--so, Celts fans, their tickets went on sale today.
The most common time for the "Fenway area weather update" seems to be 3:15 PM. Standby in 3, 2, 1...
It's official--not the game, but the Pesky ceremony. It will now be held before the Sunday game. They say they're still gonna try to get tonight's game in, despite someone at the Globe saying it looks like there's a moat in front of the Green Monster.
I was thinking about this recently. What will the reaction of the Fenway fans be this weekend to MFY assuming the games don't get rained out. I mean normally when A Rod et al are announced the boo's and chants are like clockwork and the piss and vinegar is a-flowing like it should. But for the 1st time in a long, long time they pose zero threat (unless FKR keeps losing) and these games have that "last day of school when your classes, grades, teachers etc don't mean shit and you have that anticipation of summer vacation keeping a constant smile on your face." I'm sure we'll hear the "Yankees suck" chant but to me it's too obvious. I think back when during that game in early 2005 before the game when our '04 WS Champions banner was revealed and the crowd gave Mo a standing ovation. I thought that was awesome. Perhaps a standing ovation for every MFY player that's announced..? Anywho, I hope we can come up with something creative to rub it in the MFY fans that they suck hairy balls.... Just a thought.
P.S. Yankees suck.
I'd be really surprised if they managed to get this game out today. Now we can get all excited for the presidential debate. whoop.
Sunburned Hand of the Man is playing a house party in albany tonight...plus they'll be in Easthampton on Sunday with a great lineup of other bands that includes folks like J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth). I'll be there for that.
Amalie Benjamin, 3:25 PM:
Despite an absolutely sopping Fenway Park, where the rain has been coming down nonstop since about 10 a.m. this morning, the Sox just provided us with a press release that says that the Sox weather service "calls for a possibility of a break in today's rain showers."
Therefore, gates will open at the regularly scheduled time (5:05 p.m.)...
Forecast says rain until 7pm and then heavy rain until Saturday. Looks like it'll rain on Pesky's parade.
ALSO:
The 2004 and 2007 trophies will be at the souviner store on Yawkey Way across from the park on Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Bring your camera!

The MFY splits against Daisuke are pretty amusing (not least because MLB labels them "2003-2007").
Phil, see my above comment on the rescheduling of the Pesky thing.
nick--I don't see anything about the Easthampton show on the Sonic Youth site, though it does say Thurston's playong as part of Northampton Wools in NYC Saturday. What's the big music venue in Easthampton now? Didn't Flywheel shut down?
9. Gil Velazquez, 2B
'Tis a strange sort of Oatmeal, my friends, and we shall not see its like again -- not in this world, methinks.
But Jed did well in the 2-hole last night, so...
ok, nick, I see now--a benefit in Florence, home of the Florence Diner, for the dude from that band who was also in "the other" Bunny Brains. Being from CT, "our" Bunny Brains" is now called "Ultrabunny."
So Thurston and J will be there? If so, thanks for the tip....
It's official--not the game, but the Pesky ceremony. It will now be held before the Sunday game.
So Pesky still buys green bananas? :)
Yeah, Jere, it's Northampton Wools. Here's the info about the show (sorry if it's too commercial):

the band order hasn't been set yet but No Neck and Northampton Wools are on early so come early to have your head checked.
This is a benefit show for Adam's family so any donations beyond the entry fee will be beautiful.
---
Adam was a member of Sunburned, Bunny Brains, Borbetomagus, and a number of other bands. Died of a heart attack in August. Had 3 kids.
leaving work. will catch up w/ you all later. Hope to see a game tonight!
May our oatmeal spray all over 'em!
3. David Ortiz, 1B
Confident of winning the pennant, then.
XB says Papi now getting night off, and announcement about the game a little after 6. NESN pre-game on with TC and Eck hasn't made it to the studio yet, and they aren't showing the field.
Heidi surprised by Remy who gives her an umbrella in mid-report.
"it doesn't look possible at all." --Remy, on playing tonight
There's something surreal about these games. I had actually forgotten we were playing the Yankees! Usually Allan and I talk about it all week, and are both all keyed up by game day. Today it feels like nothing. Strange and wonderful!
And as I post this I see it may be even more surreal, not played at all.
Officially in a delay.
Adam Kilgore, Globe:
No new schedule information, but the tarp is back. As soon as we hear how that affects the 8:05 p.m. start time, we'll post it. ... If they get in five innings tonight, I will eat my media guide. ...
FKR - 00
DET - 3
TB down 3-0
Sonnanstine sucking ass tonight. And we're reaping all the benefits.
5-0 Det

FKR - 00

Radar map kind of looks like a nor'easter.
FKR - 001
DET - 32
That's cuz it is a nor'easter...
although I heard it's remnants of a 'cane combined with a nor-nor.
Detroit won't score in every inning tonight. But still 5-1.
FKR - 001
DET - 320
FKR - 0010
DET - 320
FKR squander a couple in the inning.
Rays strand two in the fourth! still 5-1 us
Let's play some fucking baseball, huh?
game on!
a.) I am VERY crazy surprised they're playing baseball tonight.
b.) I've been out all evening and JUST got in, just in time for the game!
Pauley is on the mound.
PLAY BALL!
Castig: "Thank you very much, Dave O'Brien, and can you believe it! We're playing baseball tonight!"
we have a challenge!
... If they get in five innings tonight, I will eat my media guide. ...
let's make it happen!
This would actually be a great night to be at the ballpark. You'll be wet, but you'll have a very good seat!
i saw that, Nick--that's the same guy who got a final score wrong last week and a series game number wrong this week. Him saying he'll eat the media guide for me was a good sign they'd play....
I have a 2008 media guide. It's fucking heavy -- 700+ pages!
I say NINE innings
Once they moved the Pesky thing, and considering I'm sick, I decided against going up there tonight. I'm hoping to be well enough to give it a shot tomorrow, and then definitely Sunday.
Looked like the Rays were going OTT there, but a 2B and a 1B w/2 out and it's 5-2.
I have a 2008 media guide. It's fucking heavy -- 700+ pages!
I'd say allowing for condiments would be fair.
This is fucking weird. Yankees are in town, it means nothing for them... David Pauley is starting, and the park is about a third full.
For 2008, Don is WAY behind with his Tampa update. 5-2 after 4.5
so this game means nothing for the yanks -- will slappy hit 5 dongs?
i'm so pissed at Casey right now. you don't get an easier ground ball than that
You can put a whole team of condiments on the media guide. Try it on toast.
i'm so pissed at Casey right now. you don't get an easier ground ball than that
Shades of Bill Buckner.
or Bull Durham
Fun thing about a night like tonight at the park - if you have shit to dish out to the Yankees, they'll be able to actually hear you!
Or Tim Teufel
Gimabi lookin for a walk as usual. Love to see that pig called out
if casey makes the play - 13 pitch inning. ends up throwing 27.
if you are warm and dry and got nowhere to be, a night like this at the park is great. very relaxing and you can hear all the leather-lungs!
Don't see a #91 often.
LYNDON!!!
Keeps that hitting streak going in STYLE!
eat that, number 91
LYNDON!!!!!!!!!!!
heatin' up.
That's my boy!!!
"jacoby pole"
Are they playing music for every HR at Fenway now?
Castig's call for ball four: "Low and inside, ball one."
"jacoby pole"
hey now
That's my boy!!!
Until Lars gets here, that is.
Fenway has played music for every run for years.
FKR - 001 010
DET - 320 00
They might hold off on music on a run-scoring double play..
Meh. Lowell's probably done for the night.
Really? I rarely hear it on TV, only once in a while. Must be the way the crowd is mic'd?
I haven't been there since 05, and they definitely didn't do it then.
SWEAT-POWERED!!!!!!
Sweat Power!
uhhhhlll
music on runs for years -- well, that's a damn shame.
i wish they would cut out the stupid gimmicks. if you asked anyone, they would say they hate them or they don't care.
AH YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
SULTAN OF SWEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My computer's being too annoying, I gotta get out of the thread. Have fun you guys.
Castig is having a tough night.
Mike Kotsay, and the Tigers have to lose three games for the Red Sox to win the division.
Not an Ace-ves.
By '05 they were playing music on dongs--maybe it wasn't every one. But I definitely remember that Blur "woo hoo" song being the HR song a lot back then.
Hi, bye, Laura.
re music on runs, we should let them know. they should do a survey or something. they want to be fan-friendly, maybe they would actually listen.
well, bye for now.
21 pitches through a third of an inning.
hi bye nick :)
looks like on radar that one heavy band may move through soon, but then it's black skies after that. Why are weather people so consistently wrong?
forgiven me, but I've turned on the debacle...strike that, debate.
TC earlier: Red Sox would win the division with three Tampa losses and three losses by the Red Sox.
Watching it in HD, nick.
28 pitches thanks to Casey's pity.
Thank goodness I don't have HD..I don't want to see McCain that clearly.
OGC: I hope this game speeds up. lets get those innings up, down. 700 pages!
I'm sure they'll replay the debate later on tonight. Maybe tomorrow. Feels like something I should watch but oh look! Baseball.
yeah McCain's jowls are frightening. I saw his huge face in a movie on the big screen--I forget the name of that one.
Phil, does Obama look more sweaty in HD than he does in SD?
No. His opponent looks like he's going to cry, though.
5-3 on an Upton dong
fuckin Casey
Fucking Pauley.
Not getting into debate content, but both mccain and obama act like they've taken a pile of xanax. lehrer is trying hard to get the candidates to actually talk to each other and they keep talking to him.
OBC: Fuxors!!!
I can't believe Jeter's still playing. That wrist must be really killing him. Grimaces when he hits the ball...
rays doing their effing thing in the 7th. now down 5-3.
politicians are such....politicians
Not getting into debate content
good.
Tonight, no lead is safe.
they go up, I root for rain, we go ahead, I root against rain. Until the 5th, when everything McCains.
CNN has this weird audience reaction meter that runs constantly through the debate. Fascinating. Simple things for simple minds, I guess.
Velasquez getting a nice hand for his first MLB PA.
Jeter can't get it
by Jeter's left -- what a shocker!!!
Pasta diving?
50 steals for a Red Sox player
#50
Rays strand two!
FKR - 001 010 1
DET - 320 000 0
is no one there or something going on?
I keep getting drawn to the debate even though it physically pains me. I turn back to the game and see abreau. Is nothing sacred?
Looks like it will be pouring at Fenway in 20 minutes or so.
dicks on the pond
fog rolling in.
Thank you, Fog!
Mets down 4, Philly up 4, "the Good Land" tied.
I am glad that I was truped on that. I am glad Kotsay caughtsay that.
I am not glad it is 5-3.
I'm thinking of starting a blog called We Moved to Saturn.
I think tonight I've decided McCain will not win the election. That's my prediction.
Twins and ChiSox both way down
I want a downpour!
there will be a downpour. Problem is it will end. But we are facing #91...
Pauley and Aarsdmer have seriously fucked up our chances at winning the East.
"Senate Inside Baseball"
I blame Casey--clearly rooting for the other team tonight. Giving away runs on D and taking them away on O.
good catch there, Jere.
You got your Senate in my Baseball!
Infield single brigade for Tampa, loaded after 2 were out in the 8th
That'd be funny if Remy uses the term Baseball Inside Senate
FKR have the bases loaded with two outs in the 8th.
Squander.
FKR - 001 010 10
DET - 320 000 0
TB strands 3!
So this is a no-clappy clappy debate? Feels so "Twilight Zone vision of 1992"-ish.
"You don't say that. You don't say things out loud. If you have to do things, you have to do things."
Interesting post-modern approach to truth.
i hAv3 yr DivizioN
if tampa is gonna clinch, i want them to do with by winning, not by us losing. damn it all.
I wish the MFY weren't facing a Pawtucket lineup, for pride's sake, though I understand these games don't really matter.
game suxors. debate suxors.
Sheff dong. 6-3 Detroit.
well the people in charge of the team have decided (without our consent) that they don't matter. But they still do as of now.
All your divisions are belong to us.
Sheffield dong
aarsdmna not doing much to present his case for being on the ds roster.

"I have a record...of sending our young men and women into harm's way."
talking about Pawtucket callups?
FKR - 001 010 10
DET - 320 000 01
giambi's full of shit
hit the end of the bat. not HGH.
boooooooooooooooo
still maybe aardsma wants to get a good brawl going.
There talking about bracelets.....fuckin bracelets??????
Fuckin Boobs
that was a case of Remy being clueless but the producers knowing the truth, so they keep playing replays, at slower and slower speeds until he picks up on it.
The heavy stuff may just miss Fenway, but it definitely should start raining in the next 5-10 mins.
Looking at GDGD, it appears that every team batting right now has the bases loaded. I'm assuming that is wrong.
Two outs left in Detroit.
I want it to RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN RAIN.
I'm assuming that is wrong.
Yeah, bases are empty in Detroit.
BB,HBP,BB. yeah, we should totally keep AA in. cause they gave up this game 'round the 2nd inning.
oh good. A double--time to bring in White Flag.
Wouldn't it be nice if someone acknowledged that Israel has freakin' nuclear weapons?
Men on first and third with one out in Detroit.
akmakdinijad or something like that.
maybe the red bases on GDGD mean no one on. i thought the gray ones were empty and red was a runner. ... or maybe gdgd is fooked up.
GDGD was doing the bases-loaded thing in the scoreboard last night too. Either bases loaded, or no data at all. Oddly enough, GD-mini is ok.
Damn, this is painful.
amadeanajad.
well, the mfy can score 72 runs tonight if they like, they are still doing jack shit in october. ... so fuck them.
ehhh...... fuck the yankees.
BRING ON THE ANGELCUNTS OF ASSHOLEHEIM!
Tigers error scores run, puts tying run at third
E3. 6-4 Detroit.
F6. Two outs.
I was wrong on that, still a 2-run lead. FOrgot about the Shef Dong
dude!! Slamming the Spain point.
So will Hank be working in the off-season to get the Yankees moved into the NL West, where they might have a shot at winning a division?
FKR lose 6-4.
okay, amazing comeback or rain, and we stay alive
Running out of time on the rain front
So will Hank be working in the off-season to get the Yankees moved into the NL West, where they might have a shot at winning a division?
NL West, actually. No tradition is sacred.
Which is worse: watching the Yankees send us out of the division race with a blowout or watching McCain act like an asshole.
I know why McCain doesn't look at Obama. He can't turn his head!
I know why I keep watching...I can't turn mine..avert thine eyes.
Hank: they wouldn't have made the playoffs if they were in the AL East!
Neither did you!
Why does Aceves's GDGD photo have a blue background instead of the usual grey?
I am just sick. I hate my fellow Americans. I hate the Yankees.
I am going to stick my head in the oven.
cuz he blew
Why don't they just buy the Dodgers and rename 'em Yankees West. Imagine a Yankees-Yankees World Series.
oh wait...not gonna happen, but the Sox could then play the Yankees in the World Series.
In June 1917, the Red Sox were getting routed by the White Sox and it was raining. To protect their bets and thinking more rain was coming, just before the game could be ruled official, several dozens gamblers started running on the field, back and forth from the first base side to the third base side.
Fans joined them and soon there were maybe 300 fans delaying the game. Unfortunately, the hard rain did not come and the game eventually continued. And Boston lost.
Tonight's fans might want to try to delay things now, though.
The oven thing doesn't work since the switch from coal gas to natural gas, fyi.
Off the wall!
with Damon's arm, that shoulda been a double
Got that story pretty much right. It's on page 94 of my book.
Bos losing 2-0, with CWS batting in top of 5th, one out from being official, a few fans from CF jumped on field and ran to 1B seats. there were 300 people in the infield. cops broke up the mob and the game continued. red sox lost 7-2. after the game a red sox fan punched buck weaver in the jaw.
looked Knoblauchian there. I didn't see a tag. But I could be wrong.
And then later they put up the "no gambling" signs.... I know my BR&t1918RS.
basically, what i am saying is i miss baseball's good old days!
Pouring now!
Fucking toast.
