G71: Red Sox 6, Nationals 4

Red Sox - 000 312 000 - 6 7 0
Nationals - 010 002 100 - 4 8 0
David Ortiz crushed a three-run home run in the fourth, Jason Varitek hit a two-run dong in the sixth and the Sox bullpen, in relief of Lester (6-6-3-2-6, 103) held back the Nats.

Jacoby Ellsbury made two nice running catches to keep the score at 6-4. With a runner of third and two outs in the seventh, Ryan Zimmerman drove the ball to deep left center, but LBJ ran it down, banging into the wall. With one out on the bottom of the ninth, Willie Harris's drive to deep right-center was also hauled in.

Ortiz now has 1,002 career RBI and 296 career home runs. He also singled and scored in the sixth on Tek's dong. ... Dustin Pedroia had a double and an RBI-single. ... Jason Bay struck out three times and went 0-for-4.

The Yankees and Blue Jays both won, so Boston stays 5 GA in the East.

***

Jon Lester (4.69, 100 ERA+) / Craig Stammen (4.76, 91 ERA+)

Stammen is a rookie right-hander who has made only six starts. He debuted May 21.

That is an interesting point L and 9C. Everyone has some hypocritical issues, why be consistent to the point of becoming anal.

I'm OK with getting the guy at home with a 5-run lead.

Pepe Lepew said...

laura k said...

Andy, yes, that's the point. No one is completely consistent. There are too many gray areas, too much is context-dependent.

mattymatty said...

Also, the two runners were at second and third if I'm not mistaken, so getting a double play would've involved tagging someone quickly and then going to first, which would've been tough to pull off.

laura k said...

Of course I still dislike hypocrisy in many situations, but that's my own inconsistency :)

Supper tonight: Homemade artichoke hummus, Syrian bread, coleslaw.... I'm not saying I'm vegetarian, Benjamin, but FWIW, that's a more or less typical meal at my house.

Amy said...

Benjamin, I am a quasi-vegetarian, but I guess that does not really count. I eat fish and occasionally poultry (like once a week, except in the summer when I eat almost no poultry). I guess there is no name for what I am.

BTW, even his second lie was really bad. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, goes to Argentina for the coastline. It's one of the brownest, coldest coasts there are. The only town on the Argetinean coast that's worth shit is Puerto Madryn, and that's because of the penguins, whales, and other sea life.

The thing about pitas in the US, is that for some reason they're always made without the "pocket" in the middle. That's the whole point of a pita: you cut off the top, open it up, and put your falafel/shawarma/sabih/whatever in it. It's great for on the go food. Minimum spillage.

And Ish: gorditas, as far as I know, have to be made from corn flour. But then again, so do tortillas. If it's a wheat tortilla, you have to call it exactly that: wheat tortilla. Otherwise everybody will assume you mean the corn one. But what goes for Mexican food in the US is only similar to what they actually eat in (southern) Mexico.

Somebody told me that real corn tortillas have to go through something called the nixtamal process, which, oddly enough, means soaking it in water with cal (I'm pretty sure cal means limestone... that's the odd part).

Lime (calcium hydroxide), not limestone (calcium carbonate). That's what releases the niacin in the corn. That's why Europeans started getting pellagra when they started switching to subsistence corn farming (they didn't do the soaking).

Benjamin said...

Incidentally, someone brings homemade corn tortillas to sell at our local farmers' market, and it's a pretty crappy farmers' market.

SoSock said...

I eat a lot of corn tortilla chips, especially white corn, but tortillas are usually wheat here also. Cat always bought whole wheat tortillas to use in her stuff.

A Conformer said...

I meant what passes for Mexican food in the US does vary a lot regionally. I was wondering if you found that in your travels.

Well, in California some places were much closer to southern Mexico food. In Texas it was completely Tex-Mex (hmmm... I wonder why?), so most things on the menu would mean nothing to someone from Chiapas or Oaxaca. In most other places, well, my impressions are made of places like Taco Bell, Chipotle, Qdoba, etc. Maybe that's not fair, but those ARE what's popularly known as "Mexican Food".

I agree wholeheartedly about Oaxacan cuisine. Best food I've had in Mexico, and best alcohol (mezcal) too.

This one Mexican place in Portsmouth uses the following in their burritos: Rice, black beans, lettuce, Salsa Fresca, Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream or yogurt, Ranchero Sauce (Mild, Medium, Hot or XXX) and Choice of Fillings all wrapped in a wheat or white flour tortilla.

Seriously? That is strange. I traveled a bit with people that really didn't like the corn tortillas, so they always looked for wheat, and it was really hard to find any. I ate almost exclusively off of street carts and in the market, so maybe that's where the difference lies... I don't know.

NY was cool. Spent most of the time with my family, especially my 5-year old sister. She's great! She's getting all manipulative with age, but in a yet unsophisticated, cute way. It's fun to witness.
Oh, and the Cloisters and the park were very nice, and I liked Washington Heights from what I saw of it (admittedly very little)

Dairy products are great in counteracting spiciness. In fact, it's the only thing that works. You can see that combination (milk in spicy dishes) in local cuisines all around the world.

The High Line is open.

Or it at least wasn't open a couple months ago.

You have a five year old sister in NYC? When you said you had a sister in NY, I imagined an adult sister!

Nope, 5-year old. I was there the day she was born, so there's no doubt about it (:
Obviously, my dad lives in NY too (with his girlfriend). 5 is a bit too early for an Israeli to go to NY to try and find his/her luck (read: money)...

One of the banes of 1986, Ray Knight, surfaces as an in-studio* commentator on the Nats broadcast.

*(the studio is actually at the ballpark, it seems)

The High Line is quite open. Partially, but still open. Right now it runs from gansevoort to 20th, but it's supposed to run all the way up to 34th, I think.

It's nice, not amazing. I think the best thing about the park is how urban it is. The contrast between the flowers, plants and small trees and the surrounding buildings (especially those whose roofs are filled with rusting garbage) is really cool. But I wasn't wowed. I think it's probably a very nice park for those that live or work in the area, though.

Paps doesn't walk the lead off guy. I think we're safe.

Ray Knight, one of my least favourite Mets, and that's really saying something.

Ofer, did you yell at your compatriots at Chickpea that baked falafel is a travesty?

Amy said...

Ha, yeah, a 5 year old on her own in NYC would be interesting!

Benjamin said...

Fruitbat comes in with two outs in the 8th. You can tell Girardi was ejected.

laura k said...

Thanks Ofer. It probably wows me more just for its existence. It was talked about for SO long, and it seemed nothing would ever come of the old tracks except demolition. So the fact it actually became an unusual urban park seems like a small miracle to me.

Plus I just love stuff like that.

Benjamin said...

The crowd cheers the out.

laura k said...

Huge cheers for that out! So funny.

I have no idea what or where that place is, but be sure I will never step in it, or any other place that bakes falafel.

I haven't been over to the High Line yet, but one of my Facebook friends said: "It's really great. I'm sure that if I saw something like it in London or Paris, I'd think, Man, New York would never do something this cool."

When I was at NYU (a looooong) time ago), we used to go up to the abandoned elevated highway to walk around, ride bikes, etc. Now *that* was fun.

BTW, I read somewhere that yesterday was the biggest crowd in Natstown history. Any idea if today beats it?
