Tigers - 000 210 200 - 5 10 0Back at Fenway Park, the Red Sox bats felt at home immediately. Jacoby Ellsbury doubled to start the first and Dustin Pedroia followed with a line drive home run to left. Boston collected eight hits in the first two innings.
Red Sox - 220 010 10x - 6 12 0
The Tigers chipped away and tied the game in the seventh off Manny Delcarmen. After the stretch, J.D. Drew doubled and one out later Casey Kotchman singled him to third. Nick Green, who had begun the second with a dong over everything in left, lofted a sacrifice fly to center. Drew scored easily and it was Sox 6-5.
Ramon Ramirez had some trouble in the eighth. Magglio Ordonez doubled and Brandon Inge was plunked. After a successful bunt and a strikeout (why didn't Jim Leyland hit for Adam Everett?), Jonathan Papelbon came in and, with runners on second and third, got Curtis Granderson to foul out to catcher Victor Martinez. In the ninth, Bot needed only nine pitches to dispense with the Bengals (F8, K, F9).
Toronto edged the Yankees 5-4, so Boston moved to 5.5 GB in the East (one day, one game closer) and took a 0.5 lead over the idle Rangers for the Wild Card.Edwin Jackson (2.62, 174 ERA+) / Brad Penny (5.20, 91 ERA+)
We thought David Ortiz was back (and back big!) with his strong performance in June. But it turns out that was an aberration.

We need the absolute best lineup on the field every single night, egos be damned. Playoff Tito, you are our only hope.
Adam Kilgore reports (see here, too) that
Since the Red Sox arrived in Baltimore the morning of July 31, 19 roster spots have remained constant. Fifteen players cycled through the other six spots over the next nine days [Justin Masterson, Adam LaRoche, Marcus McBeth, Josh Reddick, Victor Martinez, Casey Kotchman, George Kottaras, Billy Traber, John Smoltz, Rocco Baldelli, Chris Woodward, Junichi Tazawa, Jed Lowrie, Enrique Gonzalez, and Fernando Cabrera]. ...Also at 7: The Blue Jays roll over for the Yankees.
It has been the busiest week of shuttling players in and out of the clubhouse that traveling secretary Jack McCormick can remember.

Son of a bitch, get it on the ground JD.
M, that's incorrect. Respectfully, you are perpetuating a myth.
Damn.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?!?!
Wow 1st 201 lol.
Amy--I'm still shellshocked a little. A blogger I like wrote today about losing focus when she's stressed--yes, I've lost a bit of RS focus tonight.
Funny hop frag, need a K now
Hey JD, how about getting in front of that ball next time.
Perhaps JD has also lost his focus a bit...
Huxley WANTED what he wrote to come true, his book was a policy exercise in favor of eugenics.
How do you figure that? I don't see any way that's true, the book itself disapproves of it pretty blatantly. Plus his foreword clearly states that he wrote both societies in the book (the "savages" and the regular "civilization") as impossibly flawed, negative ways of living.
Uh huh whatever
Shit. Bad D for fire there.
And now a single... Let's not fuck this up, Penny, eh?
A Conformer; listen to some of his Oxford speeches that were recorded on radio.
Amy, my sister isn't especially a fan of any one thing or another. She likes baseball, but she doesn't follow it in any big way.
She mostly likes NYY but not passionately. She rooted for the Sox in 2004, for the Sox in 2007 and then for the Rays last year.
Her claim to baseball fame is having been at the game where Reggie Jackson hit 3 HRs in a row.
A Conformer; listen to some of his Oxford speeches that were recorded on radio.
I can just answer "read the book", since we're talking about the book. But I'll look for them, why not? I'd be interested in anything he has to say, write, etc.
side retired
It's a myth that's been disproved beyond any doubt. His bio and ideas are well documented.
It's a myth that's been disproved beyond any doubt. His bio and ideas are well documented.
Does that mean I can't listen to his Oxford speeches? (-;
Well, that could have been a lot worse
By all means you should listen to them. :)
I'm being off a little I think, AFAIK he supported the population reduction part of eugenics the most.
Taking a thread break, frozen yogurt and berries have arrived
OK, gotta go start up the fire. My "goodbye, Sandusky" barbeque will be starting shortly. You guys can guard this lead for me, right?
Stick your damn foot out Penny!
OK, shower taken.
Was thrilled to see LBJ batting for the 3rd time in 3 innings when I got out.
Wish we hadn't squandered, tho.
Off to see the boys in the band!
Well, actually, only 1 of them. Mandelin and bass players are off on vacation. Dan has a guestwith him tonight. Wouldn't say who, but I'm hoping it's Dave McCracken. I know they're friends, Dave played on 2 songs on their CD, and Dave was in town this weekend because, as fate would have it, he plays with the band I saw Saturday night that I knew nothing about.
Hard to believe he would play this bar gig though, as his regular band, Donna the Buffalo, is now a national touring act and on every folk festival's must-have list.
More runs plz!
At least Dan always saves me a seat right beside him at the bar, and that's the best view in the place of the big screen so I'll be able to watch it all.
Ain't we hitting--oh ain't we hitting
This is the way we score the runs
Ain't we hitting -- oh ain't we hitting
We're gonna be today scoring runs
I will guard the lead for you all while you start BBQ and eat yogurt.
It is so hot here. Holding the laptop is awful. I may need a break soon, and then you all can hold the lead for me.
Some lefty from Taiwan warming for the Tigers
Guess I have to hold the lead for SoSock also.
Soon it will just be me and the laptop.
Jeez. Inge has a firehose for an arm.
I'm being off a little I think, AFAIK he supported the population reduction part of eugenics the most.
I support population reduction too. I think overpopulation is one of the biggest evils in the world today, and lots of poor families are doomed from the get go by having too many children, not using protection and not being able to have abortions (thanks, Catholic church! On both counts!)
OK, this is way off subject and I'm leaving now anyway. So I'll just drop this in there and run away...
Asshole.
Jackson I mean.
I thought I had all sorts of food here in my house. I just found out half of it is old and definitely gone bad.
Chewy cereal it is.
Lots of pressure on Amy ;>
Payback Sux.
Toss him.
Amy, I look forward to watching you get the save from a great seat with fantastic tuneage and a cold beer or 6. :)
Thanks for the clarification, Meuniermr. I thought you meant Ofer and wasn't sure why you thought he was an asshole!
Thanks, SoSock. I had the beer already (not six, though). Now I just need lots of ice water.
Summer finally arrived on Cape Cod today.
Cereal for dinnner...yum!
I thought I had all sorts of food here in my house. I just found out half of it is old and definitely gone bad.
Chewy cereal it is.
Blah, didn't type that twice. Computer problems.
Patrick, you are very excited about the cereal, huh!? :)
"Summer finally arrived on Cape Cod today."
In Maine too, amy. My dogs said, 'No thanks, boss, our tongues are way way out there" to my last walk offer.
Uh oh, leadoff double, and I have to guard the lead...
John, our poor dog also. We walked her for about an hour this morning before it got really hot, but by this afternoon all she wanted to do was sleep.
Penny, don't fucking piss away this lead
wtf amy?
4-3
what are you doing?
I'm back but less thready. Amy, I do all kinds of contortions to not have the hot laptop on my lap. I end up hurting my neck and shoulders to avoid the heat. Bad.
I think I am not doing a good job.
I'm w/ Ofer on population control. The most effective means of birth control, globally? Educating girls.
And suddenly we have a one run game :(
In the winter I like the warm laptop, and so far this summer it has not been an issue. But today it was hot, and we have no AC here in the cottage. The fan helps, but the laptop does not.
I never put the laptop on my lap. I worry about the energy screwing up my energy. I have felt weird there after having done that.
Educating girls about birth control and about why having a baby is not all fun and games and NOT a way to get love into your life.
Just stopped by to say...4-0, woot! 4-1, hmmm. 4-2, uh-oh. 4-3, yikes! Stop it, now! And win! (Back to dinner. It's 6:00 here, you know)
Hmmm,
I guess my paternal grandparents would have made good catholics (they weren't)
Granddad youngest of 22 (11 by each wife and no twins), Grandmother youngest of 11 (no twins).
Made for big reunions though.
I hate heat in all seasons. Today we have the A/C on and a fan going. But even in the winter I can't stand the laptop on my lap.
No problem with energy though. Nothing to worry about in the potential baby department.
Do you use one of those lap tray things, Patrick? Or a table? I just can't sit at a table and relax. But one of those trays might be a smart idea.
I am not so worried about the energy. Should I be?
Educating girls? Won't that just encourage immorality and promiscuity, l-girl?
;)
Falafel, in case you were wondering. (Hi, Ofer!). Talking about birth control? Heavy subject.
Fu-te ni.
People doing body shots up in the stands.
Fact I'm still breathing means the Sox still lead.
One thing leads to another, dancing on the bases and pretty soon another Sox run.
futility?
Hi, Westcoastsox! Enjoy your falafel.
S1C, you still doing lyrics or just waxing poetic?
Anybody got a shrubbery?
Amy, that's true. But it's not educating girls about birth control that makes for smaller families. It's educating girls. Period. Girls going to school, having other options in their lives besides making babies. The #1 predictor of small family size globally is girls' access to education.
This from the Guttmacher Institute, and they know.
this guy has my new fave name
he is the pitcher who says "ni"
Birth control a heavy subject? That's nothing for a JoS gamethread. We get much heavier than that. :)
Yes, that makes sense to me. I just didn't know you meant it that generally---I thought you meant educating them about birth control.
BAY!!
CANADONG!
OH WAH WHA OH WAHAH
THUNDER!!!!!!
CANUCK DOUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!
thunder bay!
THUNDER!!!
Oh, Bay, welcome back.
Lyrics Amy
Worked in 3 innings!!!
canadong, I like it :)
Next Heavy Subject:
seat belts
i think jays got a dong and are up 5-4
How are seat belts even a subject?
Now that we have a two run lead, I have a question that you tech types may have an opinion on.
LCD or plasma? We are buying a new TV for our new home and have never had a flat screen before. I am leaning towards plasma, but still on the fence. We are looking for a 42 inch set.
Don't forget the shrubbery!!!
I have fond memories of that movie (backseat of a VW beatle).
Seat belts and birth control occupy the same niche of totally noncontroversial controversial topics.
thanks, jgf
We could go from seat belts to bike helmets.
I have students who want to write essays on phony controversial topics like seat belts, drinking age, smoking (!), motorcycle helmets.
Not so much a tech q as a consumer-goods q, I think. I wonder if this group is a good one to answer that, with everyone watching MLBTV and using GDGD. But who knows, maybe people are more into TV than I realize.
Abortion is another one it's impossible to write about if you haven't been around that block yourself and even then not such a good topic for a reasoned essay.
I can just see these essays, too. My Right To Brain Damage.
Amy - here you go, LCD VS PLASMA from cnet.
Sadly, most people who blather about abortion have very little knowledge or experience to back up the myths.
Seat belts are dangerous. Fact!: 37% of people killed in driving accidents are wearing seat belts!
Maybe if they were unencumbered they would've made it. It's best not to think of such dark things.
people should ride motorcycles without helmets -- thin out the herd a bit
Perhaps you are right, Laura, given the lack of responses. I just read and hear so many different things. I watch baseball on TV, so the TV matters to me. Plus TV shows, movies, etc.
Almost no one wears helmets on their bikes here in "live free and die" New Hampshire.
Ask anyone who has worked in a hospital ER if seat belts are dangerous. Same goes for motorcycle helmets.
Thanks, S1C...I have done lots of internet research. I was just curious about people's actual experiences. I pretty much know the pros and cons, but still am on the fence.
I was thinking of NH. Riding a motorcycle w/o a helmet is complete idiocy.
On bikes or motorcyles, Patrick? Is there no law requiring them on motorcycles in NH?
I do not understand those who do not wear helmets or seat belts. Such a small thing to do to protect yourself and save your family and friends from heartache.
o'brien just says that guillen for the second straight AB was set to toss his bat away for ball 4 but it was called a strike.
in the sixth, yes. but in his last at-bat, he took ball 2 then flew to CF.
o'b is talkin' fiction.
"Seat belts are dangerous. Fact!: 37% of people killed in driving accidents are wearing seat belts!"
Um wouldn't that mean that 63% of them aren't?
That's what I think, L. I get scared just watching these naked bikers on the highway.
Well, our 47 inch is an LCD, high def and B-fly and I love it for gaming. Plasma not so well for gaming.
For us it came down to price and our phillips through dell was about 500 less for the same size so we went with the phillips.
Now if it lasts as long as our 36 inch we will be happy (12 years).
Amy, oh sure, I could see that. I'd love one to if I had nothing else to spend my money on.
We watch baseball on TV too. :) And movies.
I couldn't even consider it unless I was already traveling at least a month out of every year, had a great camera, could take the dogs to a cottage every year, etc. etc. Low priority. But it would be fun, no doubt.
motorcycles, Amy.
I tell them, l-girl: if you've had an abortion or been the man responsible for a woman's abortion, maybe you have something new to bring to the topic, but it isn't likely, even with first-hand experience that you can do anything except recycle. Why do you want to write an argumentation essay anyway, I say (since I don't assign them)(suspicious they want to recycle not just old arguments but some old dreck paper they got praised for in junior high....)
First 123 for Penny
NH is famous for not having helmet laws.
It's not just heartache for your family (altho that's very true). Brain injury is the most horrible thing that can happen to you, I think. It's the absolute last thing I would ever want to happen to me or anyone I know.
TOR: 001 31
MFY: 101 10
No helmet law in CT for Motorcycles, there is one for Bicycles until you are 11 (?) or so, but then that is CT for you.
Irid, I think - I hope - that's what he meant w/ that statistic. I think it was sarcastic. Not positive, but I think so!
JGF, that's a good way to put it, asking them to bring something new to the topic, which they probably can't do.
I've had bikes since 1965--and the guy I bought my first bike from offered to sell me a helmet. He had a cheapie and a good one (for those days.) He showed them to me, tapped the cheapie, tapped his head, said, "Five dollar helmet, five dollar head." That was all it took to make the expensive sale.
Yes, the TV is a big indulgence for us, given that what we were watching was a 20 year old 26 inch TV.
Wow, Patrick, they really do mean Live Free or Die.
I recently had an argument with a friend who refuses to wear a bicycle helmet while making her two teenage daughters wear them. She says it makes her feel confined. Stupidity.
Indulgences are great. I'm glad you can do it if you want it.
Back with a pizza and settling in for the rest of the game.
pitches seen by fy this evening
7-4-9-9
I feel like the flowers in this vase,
Ain't the Sox beautiful we said.
Their sitting in the vase but are dead.
But we ain't feeling anything
the sox are winning
The Yankees are losing
and my whiskey is in my glass.
She says it makes her feel confined.
So's a coffin.
Back with a pizza and settling in for the rest of the game.
good move.
Saw a friend of mine killed on his motorcycle, even with a helmet brain injuries can happen but the helmet increases chances of survival.
Hmm, I should have said that to her. What really annoyed me was that she was saying this in front of the daughters who have to wear helmets. One daughter said, "It makes me feel confined also." Mother says, "See? It's not just me." I said, "You are not exactly being a good role model here!"
dear castig: we don't give a rats ass about aaron boone. stfu
Writing about disability for all these years, I've come to believe I could survive and thrive with any manner of physical disabilty, no matter how involved. Not that I want to test my feelings, but that's what I think. But a traumatic brain injury... that fills me with horror and dread.
Everyone wear helmets please! :)
s1c, absolutely (and that's awful). the helmet goes a long way tho. increases your chances a lot.
amy, that woman is a bit of a thickie, i think. good you challenged her.
mdc up
That's terrible, S1C.
There's a young man (25) here in Wellfleet who was skateboarding and horsing around holding on to the end of a truck. Without a helmet. He lost his balance and went flying. He survived, miraculously, but has brain damage and will never be the same. His mother, who stayed by his side for months in the hospital, says that she mourns for the son she had while still trying to help the son she now has.
Amy, your friend's 'confined' is like 'peripheral vision' or 'can't hear' or 'personal freedom'--those are all the arguments on that side of the helmet thing. That's why it's a phony topic. Everyone knows the whole argument before it even begins.
Bikers get very emotional about this stuff! These men shall not have died in vain...as long as you can feel the wind in your hair!
I started wearing a helmet to ski after years of skiing without one. They did not exist when I was younger. At first, my head felt heavy, and I could not hear as well. But now I would not ski without it. (Though I also think I am done skiing anyway.)
Do you remember the woman referred to as "the central park jogger"? I know her through anti-violence work. She had traumatic brain injury. Unbelievable recovery story, and also (like the young man Amy is talking about) permanent damage.
I was already hip to horrors of TBI when I met her, but her experience had a big impact on me.
Anytime B-fly talks about getting on a bike with one of her boyfriends without a helmet I show her all of my scars (dumped my motorcycle at night going around a curve). That usually makes her stop arguing about a helmet.
oh yes, the wind in the hair. very important, that.
I saw a guy on a crotch rocket who was wearing a full-face helmet. He had a girl on the back. She was not wearing a helmet. That was, let's just say a bit backward.
There are many different types of helmets, too. Any helmet should be better than none at all.
ram up
hold the line
The only argument I know against helmets is...wasps. I sucked one in once on the Maine Turnpike, and it wasn't fun. But one wasp in 45 years of scooterin' is not much of an argument.
I did not realize that she had TBI, Laura, or at least did not remember that. What an awful nightmare that was. How tragic that she never fully recovered.
Dare I ask what a crotch rocket is?? LOL
Hey look, it's the 7th inning and we have a... a... a lead!
Very nice K
i don't know what it is, amy, but i wouldn't google image it if i were you
We had a lead in the (sniff) eighth inning yesterday.
It's one of those plastic looking motorcycles that you have to straddle.
Amy said...
Dare I ask what a crotch rocket is?? LOL
those real colorful bikes, either bright yellow or nice cherry apple red, the scurge of bikes to the Harley Elitist....
i wanna lead in the 9th
You know those real sporty looking motorcycles? The ones that are driven by younger guys and driven really, really fast? Crotch rocket.
Something is making noise in my kitchen cabinet. I am afraid to look.
I think we should call a Kotchman homer a Kotch Rocket
Yes, it is tragic. She identifies as a TBI survivor much more than a rape survivor, because she has no memory of the assault.
She's a great person who has made giving back to survivors a huge part of her own recovery.

Thanks, guys. I can't tell one motorcycle from another, but now I will look.
This is a crotch rocket.
You click this, all you see is a picture of a motorcycle. No crotches.
Trisha Meili
I like that. Kotch Rocket.
also sort of sounds like the name of a vibrator
A lot of crotch rockets have stickers like 'No Fear.'
God help us. And, Amy, they are literally twice as fast as your car, so no wiseguy revving at the stoplight. They will crush you.
Gah
Oh yeah, last night, 8th. Right. I was on my way home from work, so it never really sunk in. By the time I got back to the game, we were sunk.
Uh oh, only a one run lead again.
damn
I was at New England Dragway in Epping, NH on Saturday night with a friend who had a couple of free tickets. Bunch of guys had their street motorcycles - crotch rockets... Drove them to he dragway... They got up to around 150-170mph in a quarter mile.
OB saying the tigers getting closer an closer
but WE scored the previous run. so they were FALLING FURTHER BEHIND before this run.
... you espn-lobotomized fucking shit-faced pisshead
I assume that is not a brand name? I would like to teach a trademark class about that one!
I like Kotch Rocket. I would like to see one.
But we went there to see jet-powered dragsters. Those buggers are LOUD. Incredibly loud. The fastest one was 303 mph. 488 km/h
Thanks for the link, Laura. I will take a look at it after we WIN this game.
OB loves the doom, though
This is very educational re crotch rockets.
FUCK.
ugh
Why is our pen sucking so much lately?
I was going to talk about something but....it doesn't matter anymore.
Are you fragging kidding me?
OB really does love the doom. I'm surprised he's not a Boston sportwriter.
Loves the doom. Wants the doom. Buys the doom dinner and tries to coax the doom into bed, but doom says, your hair is too ugly, get tf away from me.
MDC is one of those sad stories for me. He has such great stuff. Electric. But he's always had shitty location.
Epping is the next town over. You made it to my stomping grounds, Ish.
Crotch rocket is just slang--originally a term of disparagement. Real men sat tall (you're in a crouch on a crotch rocket) and rode real machines made in America. Crotch rockets, of course, are a nasty Oriental invention.
Kevin, our pen was outstanding in most of the games last week. Until Bard last night and now.
Once in awhile, Patrick.
Funny how we were at the dragway but could hear the cars going round Star Speedway closeby.
AKA rice burners.
I don't think MDC is a sad story. He's done a lot of great work for us.
So you get a little racism thrown in there with the other macho shit, always good.
"Kevin, our pen was outstanding in most of the games last week. Until Bard last night and now."
There was also that Rays game and the nightmare against Oakland that the pen blew recently.
They've been pretty good most of the time but not so much lately
L, he has done great work but I've always thought he'd have been our 8th inning guy or somebody else's closer by now.
Phew!
Drew, Bay, Kotchman this inning
The crowd at NE dragway was, let's say interesting. I didn't know we had that many of those types of people. Proud to be an American.
A blended in group of uber-patriots, hicks, and gangstahs. Well, wanna-be gangstahs.
This is not a place Barack Obama would have held a campaign rally at.
Nightmare against Oakland, you say? That was the Joy of Sox game.
Ish, right, I see what you mean. Higher expectations.
My friends in Kingston are not progressive, to put it kindly.
He throws 97, has a good change and a tight curve. He's always been THIS CLOSE to brilliance, but never quite got there.
Fire!
"he looks like he is starting to get hot again" OB
On FUCKING fire!
Good start
This Tigers bullpen sucks. Let's go.
We aim to please, l-girl!
"So you get a little racism thrown in there with the other macho shit, always good."
Bikers are slaves to prejudice and there is always a clear hierarchy of good, bad, worst. In 1965, when I bought my first bike, to buy a Japanese Honda 50 meant you were a faggot who spit on the graves of men who died in the Pacific. That really is not an exaggeration.
Fortunately, I was into English bikes....
Almost!
