Tigers - 300 000 002 - 5 7 1Good work in my absence! I had an overnight sleep apnea appointment. No matter what the circumstances are, Lowell as a pinch-runner is hilarious. Now off to find some video. (Fuckin' Jays...)Rick Porcello (4.30, 106 ERA+) / Junichi Tazawa (10.80, 44 ERA+)
Red Sox - 031 020 10x - 7 7 1
Tazawa, 23, makes his first major league start (and second major league appearance).
Terry Francona:
A year ago, he's pitching in the (amateur) Industrial League in Japan, and a year later he's pitched at Yankee Stadium and now Fenway Park. ... He doesn't seem too overnervous or that out of sorts with where he is. ... His stuff's good enough where, if he throws strikes, he should be fine. After a fantastic spring training -- 12 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 10 strikeouts -- Tazawa started the 2009 season in AA Portland. In 18 Sea Dogs starts, he posted a 2.57 ERA. He made two starts for Pawtucket (2.38 ERA) before being called up last Thursday. (There's lots of good info in SoSH's Adopt A Prospect thread for Tazawa; and here.)
He showed tremendous poise at Yankee Stadium and although he took the loss, it's was tough to be disappointed with his performance. Elias Sports Bureau says Tazara became the first pitcher in history to make his major league debut against the Yankees in extra innings.
The last Red Sox pitcher to make his debut in extras was Phil Seibel, who pitched in the 11th inning against Baltimore on April 15, 2004. Seibel made his second -- and last -- major league appearance three days later against the Yankees. (But he's got a World Series ring!)
Tazawa will also be the second-youngest Japanese pitcher to start a major league game:
Player Team Yrs/Days First startA Globe article from June mentioned that Tazawa studies English for three hours a day, four times a week. "I'm not smart, so it takes time."Porcello, 20, pitched against the Red Sox on June 2: 4.1-8-3-1-2. Before that start, he had a 3.48 ERA. Since then, it's 4.91.

Replay delay in NY
Fan interference. According to Harvey, who is watching that game
Ruled a home run. Arggh.
Call upheld: dong
is it an official game yet? i always forget the cutoff point. 6 1/2?
"The dong is being challenged."
The sound of this sentence really amuses me for some reason.
It's official (5 innings)
Why the fuck do you put a guy with a 4.88 ERA in a one-run game in that fucking bandbox?
Most of the Jays relievers kind of suck.
yeah the Jays are good for nothin'.
In-car-nation makes it a 2-run game!
Tying run at the plate for the Jays
Long segment on Baseball Tonight about the brawl. Gammons said no way was Tazawa throwing at Cabrera, but that the retaliation against Yook was obvious. Another guy ragged on Yook for throwing the helmet, and said that instead of tackling the pitcher, he should have thrown a punch.
Looks like rain is moving out soon.
Also looks like I may be asleep before the rain moves out.
Sorry folks, I have to put moderation back on before I go to bed. Good night.
game back and we're gone?
g'night
I guess that's it then.
Goodnight, Thread.
Well, I see I've missed the top half of the inning
Baseball is back, altho maybe threadless.
Zokay tho, wins are wins.
I can NOT make this shit up, I swear!
Whilst awaiting the resumption of play I piddled around cleaning out clipboards, thinning the pile a little. Came across my notes from the trip to Boston and entered them in my travel notebook before trashing the papers. When Cat and I travelled so much with the soap business I always took notes - mileages vs. times using different routes, times to avoid certain areas, noted decent bargain hotels for overnight travel, etc.
I figured I'd add these because hopefully I'll be travelling these roads again.
When I tallied the total odometer readings for gas mileage I ended up with 1998 miles. Then out of curiosity I simply subtracted end from beginning. My total mileage for my 1st trip to Boston? - 2004!
Swear it!
Bard is in!
Have I mentioned lat.......
nevermind
I know you're asleep, but DIRTY WATER! Despite all the gloom and doom and the long losing streak, we somehow have the 4th best record in MLB, and if the season ended today, we would be in the playoffs against the Angels. I still think the AL Championship is going to come down to us and the Yankees. The rest of the season is about jockeying for home field advantage (and holding off the Rangers and Rays).
The water is Muddy!!!
