Phillies - 001 001 022 - 6 9 1
Yankees - 000 000 001 - 1 6 0
Cliff Lee pitched a complete game (9-6-1-0-10, 122), not allowing a Yankee beyond second base until an unearned run scored in the ninth.
Chase Utley hit two solo home runs off Sabathia (7-4-2-3-6, 113) and Raul Ibanez hit a two-run single in the eighth. Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard had RBIs in the ninth.
Derek Jeter had three of New York's six hits and scored the lone run in the ninth. Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Mark Teixeira was also 0-for-4 and, like Slappy, failed to hit the ball out of the infield.
It's the third straight World Series in which the Yankees lost Game 1 (2001 and 2003). Eleven of the last 12 teams to win Game 1 have gone on to win the World Series.Cliff Lee (3.22, 138 ERA+) / CC Sabathia (3.37, 133 ERA+)

Some of Peter Abraham's Media Day observations:
• The dumbest question of the day came from a NYC television reporter who asked assorted Yankees how they would fare in the New York City Marathon.
• A TV reporter from Scranton, Pa., asked Phil Hughes if winning the World Series would compare to winning the International League championship last season. Phil, to his credit, did not burst out laughing.
• Here's the difference between A-Rod and Jeter: The Yankees PR director stood guard behind A-Rod during his entire session, waiting to rescue him from any sticky situations or send text messages to Kate Hudson. Jeter was left on his own. It's amusing that a 34-year-old man needs a babysitter.

Actually they call it a "handler" for A-Rod.
This should be the first non-Red Sox World Series game thread, right?
Yep.
I watched the WS without fail until 2003, though I did see most of the deciding game that year. It helped ease the pain slightly.
Watched some in '05 and '06, but not any entire games. Saw very little in '08.
Really? I am surprised. I can't say I watch every inning of the World Series, but I always watch a good portion of the games, if I can. It's the last time I get to see baseball until the spring, and even when I don't care who wins, I savor these last 4-7 games. I don't watch sports all winter, except maybe the Superbowl to be sociable. It's baseball or nothing at all.
Bigmouth Rollins vows Phils will win in 5!
From the actually quote "...but I'm thinking five, close it out at home."
That's a vow?
Do you take this man to be your husband? I think. And do you take this woman to be your wife? I think.
Maybe I watched more than I remember. I'd have to see if I kept scorecards. I remember enjoying the hell out of the 14-inning Game 3 in 2005.
I think all I saw of 2008 was the resumption of the suspended Game 5.
Buck and McShithead annoy me so friggin' much, that I would have to watch on mute -- and that's hard to do when I don't have a stake in the game.
We get a Fox feed from Buffalo, but we also get the international feed, which I think is O'Brien and Sutcliffe. I was really hoping for the Dodgers, so we could get Scully on the audio. Are the Phillies radio guys any good?
SoSHer DieHardSoxFan1:
"Courtesy of the Palm Beach Post, a video link of A-Rod blowing his 1993 high school state championship game by airmailing a routine 6-4 putout in the bottom of the 9th. This was the final play of A-Rod's amateur career, a mere three weeks before he was taken #1 overall by the Mariners."

Time to crush these Nazis!
I resent that these assholes are using music from Star Wars.
They don't seem to understand they are using it backwards, as well. They are the Empire, not the rebels. Morons.
And it's O'B and Sut for me.
Which I suppose is a step up from Buck and the Artist Formerly Known as Tim McCarver.
Phillies radio guys aren't too bad. They're pretty decent. Too bad Harry Kalas is dead... :\
What are the chances a clearly blown call decides the series?
Gotta be at least 15%.
The JD shots were 0-for-3 this year, but I think they'll work for the Phillies here.
(Or I say that simply because I like alcohol.)
HA.
MFY introducing themselves with country. Slappy says his name and totally pauses, you can see him deciding what should I say, before his says DR.
MORON!
Ready for a little Interleague baseball?
I'm rooting for the red team.
Rollins: "Here's an out. ... You're welcome."
Asshole.
Well, that's just fucking amazing plate discipline.
Utley on base for his 26th straight post-season game.
Two-out rally time.
Utley on base for his 26th straight post-season game.
Wow
time for howard to go 04papi on these fucks.
Why the fuck has blogger spontaneously decided to not list me as "Kevin"?
i was wondering who you were!!!
Alright Werth, show us all why I want the Sox to pick you up when Drew's contract is up.
FWIW!!!
squander not this chance
sut telling cc to empty the tank already.
phuckin phils
They squandered this chance.
Damn
Well, they got his pitch count up at least.
let's go, flee.
And now I'm back to being Kevin
Fucking amazing job, Blogger
you didn't change anything?
Any Canadians in this series?
Nope
Not a thing
It just decided to randomly use my GMail username for a while, apparently
light rain now falling
3-pitch K for CI!
Not that I know of, although Werth used to be in the Blue Jays minor league system
Matt Stairs!
As a catcher, actually.
Amusing story: When Werth was in the Jays farm system, Kevin Cash was too. The Jays apparently though Cash would turn out to be the better catcher, so they converted Werth to the outfield.
Ah, dang, I forgot about Stairs.
I want to see a lot of THAT tonight!
Sit down, Douche!
if we still got the globe & mail delivered, we'd probably be seeing full-page features on any canuck on the rosters.
i should cheque (!) if there are others.
3-ball count to 4 of last 5 PHI hitters
So far so good. CC has thrown lots of pitches, Lee had a great half inning.
A bit of a struggle to start things for Charleston Chew.
Did he just say "crap" about the weather forecast?
That inning went way too quickly
Sit
prob not true at all, but sut saying mfy thinking about putting shemp in LF in philly and maybe damon RF.
damon's noodle in RF???
bring it on.
Dang. Warning track power.
sut clearly calling cabrera "milky" twice on that play.
sut says victorino in recent years has "learned the value of putting the ball in play".
so before, he thought striking out was the way to go?
utley's 26 straight playoff games on base is a new MLB record
Interesting trivia fact: the Phillies have been in seven World Series (including this one), and in six of the seven it was against a team that is currently in the American League East.
UTLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HELL YEAH!!!
I knew that insanely short porch in right would come in handy.
Phillies get the first run!
Ok, keep the pressure on. SCORE MORE RUNS NOW
SUT called that werth K "a productive out" because he made CC throw 5 pitches. getting his PC up.
good god.
Douche-K!
Sit, Douche
Bitch Tits K!
Sit
Lee joins the Klan.
Side, K'd
Can we get this Cliff Lee guy for our team? :)
Douche Canoe is playing dumb. Well, he doesn't need to PLAY dumb...
That's quite convenient
umps get sit right.
hal-ah-fuckin-loo-yah.
DONG #2!!!!!
HELLZ YEAH!!!
Slick does it again!
(I call him Slick because... Have you seen his hair? All slicked back like he's some leather-jacket wearing punk going to his 1980s prom)
Or um, as a friend of mine on Twitter pointed out - The 50s.
That was awesome! I loved that catch.
ho-hum!!!
Didn't even have to move to make that play.
He makes baseball look so hard.
8 outs to go
7 OUTS TO GO
FU SPIKE!
6 OUTS TO GO!!
good work hughes
now marte vs utley
Time to put this game out of reach.
only guys to hit 3 dongs in a WS game
babe (2)
reggie
...
utley?
Huggies barking at the ump. "Dont' you know who I am?? I'm Ian Kennedy....or somebody."
gift strike - 3 feet outside
count is 4-1
strikes 2 and 3 were balls
sut: "it's almost like [hp ump] got tired of calling balls."
Utley strikes out on ball 5.
HP Ump: Gerry "thank you for that generous check, hal and hank" Davis
Raaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllll. Thanks for the double ribeye.
4-0!!
way to shut 'em up
Hughes has an infinite postseason ERA.
did i hear some Let's Go Phillies there?
Just saw the post that only Ruth and R.Jackson have had two HRs in a game before Utley tonight. Wow, that's surprising.
sut quietly and clearly ripping girardi.
says ibanez sucks mightly against LHP and hits RHP. so girardi did not even have the LHP coke up, let alone bring him in, and let ibanez face the RHP robertson -- 2 run single.
says girardi will have a lot of Q to answer if mfy lose.
Infinite WS ERA anyway...
flee still in.
So basically... Girardi has a lot of questions to answer.
Game 1 and he's already being out-managed. Well, more like out-managing himself. Manuel hasn't had to make any decisions. Just keep putting Flee out there.
Web Gem!
Ruth and Mr. Cocktober are the only ones with 3 HR, not 2.
Lee BTB!
MFY never shut out in 2 straight WS games.
last game in 2003 (beckett) and tonight could be the first time
Sit
he'd rather Swish than fight on that at bat
3 outs to go.
and it's not even 11:00! Paceman Lee!
Bruney wanted #SS but Matsui already had it
The Nazi-Fuck is wearing 99. Interesting. I'm surprised 99 isn't worn more in baseball.
RU-iz. Who does McMoron think he is? Buck Martinez?
in talking about game 2, sut referred to prime pedro as "aj burnett with better command"
i will go to nyc and kill sut tonight.
girardi getting coke up 20 minutes late.
PILE
IT
ON
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job! Keep tacking on and keep wearing down this already shitty pen
That's it. Don't let up the pressure for even a minute.
Chip Caray has "fisted", Joe Buck has "squirter" and McMoron has "plops one."
Talk dirty to me, Philadelphia.
"Chip Caray has "fisted", Joe Buck has "squirter" and McMoron has "plops one.""
They've gotten into Matsui's collection!
WELL, THERE'S A LOT, A LOT OF ASS BEING KICKED HERE.
Gotta love the tweets about Cliff Lee:
- Fox pre-empted "Glee" for "Lee"
- Cliff Lee just looked at Kate Hudson, and now she's pregnant. So is Goldie Hawn.
McMoron, usually when you win 40 pennants you also will play 40 WS game ones. Dick brain.
my god
it's 5-0! This isn't the tying run on second! Who fucking cares???
Cliff Lee Facts:
- Derek Jeter thinks Cliff Lee has calm eyes
- Cliff Lee just spit out a sunflower seed. It hit the ground and instantly grew into a sun.
- Cliff Lee makes Joe Buck cry into his pillow at night.
- Cliff Lee has always been able to navigate New Facebook
- And on the seventh day, God rested. Cliff Lee didn't.
O'B says this game is just about out of reach.
they're just fucking with me now, right? It's a big practical joke, they're not REALLY showing Jeter's face on half the screen on every pitch are they?
- The 1st season of 24 was based on the exploits of Cliff Lee. In reality, he kicked terrorist ass in 6 hours.
- Answering Cliff Lee on every question of your SAT will guarantee you at least a 2000.
- Cliff Lee lost 60 lbs. the day he was circumcized
HE LEADS OFF NEXT INNING YOU KNOW!!!
... or the CIA is doing it to drive you insane.
yeah! 6-zip, ass-assers
No, O'B, that was not a collison at home plate. If it was, Dumbo woulda run back to the dugout to avoid it.
My very own Cliff Lee Fact:
Some say he eats bagels then shits them out onto a linescore.
line drive for jetes.
tease 'em -- then crush them.
Cut the crap. Outs. Get them.
tp?
that's your fuckin throw?
Ugh. Nice fucking throw there.
McCarv keeps saying they're "letting" Lee pitch and he's "allowed" to pitch. No, they're NOT letting/allowing the bullpen to come in when Lee is doing just fine
oh like Yankee fans are gonna know Blister in the Sun....
K-Rod.
Good to see Slappy back to his usual form.
A-Rod Ks, but his love of the game is renewed so it's okay... (did McCarver really say that before or did I dream it?)
international feed showing mfy fans looking totally wrecked and despondent -- like this is game 7!!!!
hilarious.
they are either moping and looking depressed or walking out!!!
Dirty Cheesesteak water!
PHINAL!
SIT
"1 down 3 to go" --the Meatmen
"
they are either moping and looking depressed or walking out!!!"
And Fox trying it, not realizing the guy they were showing had a bulletproof vest on--not exactly a paying customer.
It's like a baby New York batting performance!
Pheels good.
mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmmmmmmm!
great freakin game!!!
And now ...
PEDRO
And that 10 I lost on FKA in the ALCS....more than recovered!!!
