Orioles - 000 200 000 1 - 3 10 0

The Red Sox are 2-3 against the Orioles this season; they have already lost more games to Baltimore than they did in all of 2009 (16-2).Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Drew, RF
Lowell, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Varitek, C

Van Every, CF
Tom Singer, MLB.com:
This can be a crazy game: The Orioles have lost four of Millwood's five starts. In contrast, the Red Sox have won four of the starts made by Sunday starter Josh Beckett, even though his ERA [7.22] is more than double that of Millwood's [3.38].

Today, the water in Boston is *literally* dirty. WE CAN NOT LOSE.
Dirty Water updates
Yesterday, the Bruins used up the Dirty Water (closer to the source, actually playing in Boston) but today there is plenty to go around. No Bruins, no Celtics, no nothing. The only local team in action is the Red Sox, and backed by unpotable dirty water, they CANNOT LOSE.
Fact
I like this fact. It's truthy.
Ack. Yook out of the original lineup:
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Drew, RF
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Lowell, 3B
Varitek, C
McDonald, LF
Van Every, CF
Lowell at 1B, Beltre at 3B.
That new lineup concerns me. I'd rather not get swept by the Fuckin' Os.
Hey, OB: Scutaro took 5 pitches in a row! OMG!!!
Win pls
Hello. Here for a bit, but have to go to a thing at 3. Poo. I haven't seen baseball since Wednesday. No TV or internet on the Cape. Comcast came late yesterday, but then their modem failed and we were back to the dark ages again.
Hope they do NOT lose to the last place team again!
Hey, Joe, our daughter just called to tell us about the water. WTF is going on?
Damn.
2!
Come on..
Excuse me for this Tolstoy OT, I'd like someone's opinion.
My parents think moving to Santiago would be a hugely stupid decision. They are ignoring that I have lived by myself before and the three months of research I have done on the DR. Last night my mother threatened to disown me if I moved to Santiago. She didn't even ask me why I want to move. I'm 30 and want to get out of the house and hate the area I am living in because it is too far away from a city.
Meunier, at 30 you should absolutely do what you want, unless your parents have some very good reasons for discouraging you, which you do not identify. In fact, I cannot imagine any. It's always fair for parents to express their feelings and opinions, but to threaten you seems really out of line. I know I would be miserable if my daughter, who will be 30 in September, moved really far away from me, but I would hope that I would never do anything to stop her from doing what she wants to do.
They think I am not emotionally mature enough because I have Asperger's syndrome, but I lived by myself in downtown Detroit for a year and a half for grad school and did not have a problem. IMO that is a much tougher place to live in than a developing country!
My 2 cents.
Move.
My yungest son is 30 this year. He has worked in California twice in the last few years, once for 3 months, then for 6-7 months last year. He also spent a few months in the Ar. - N. Mex. area 2 years ago. I knew after the first trip that he was in love with the area and would probably end up living there one day. I have done nothing but encourage him. We're all different, and different things make us happy. Don't handcuff your future to anyone else's ideas of what's right. Actually, I would love to spend some time on the west coast myself.
As I told him, go while you're young and unobligated. If you miss home, you can come back. He's going back in July to house hunt. And there's a girl there now, so he culd even go without a place already bought if he wants to. More power to him, more power to you. Go.
Well, it sounds like you and your parents need to have a talk, perhaps with a professional, to sort out their concerns. It sounds like they are motivated by love and concern, not selfishness. I guess I don't know enough about the situation and probably should not have expressed an opinion, but since you asked, I did! I don't know how much your Asperger's affects your ability to live independently since I know there is a broad spectrum. So I think you should get professional opinion, not an opinion from someone on a baseball blog.
2 OTTs to start the game.
Maybe I should have kept my trap shut, but I couldn't resist. It's so freaking rare lately!
I'm also indenpendently rich for the next 20 years, I will receive an estate worth 800K this month.
Well, at any rate, I don't think parents should ever threaten to disown a child.
OK, I have to run.
That's great for your son, SoSock!!
And M, Amy is right. There are obviously factors in your case that do not apply to my son. Listen too their concerns and consider them. But investigate the options and feasibility in terms of what you want to do with your life, not in terms of what will "keep the peace".
GD buzzard's luck
I will receive an estate worth 800K this month.
Yay, someone can buy me that Exile box.
So Lugo must have tagged Van E as he was running to 2nd?
McDonald looks at 5 pitches in a row! And Scutaro's streak goes to 8! OMG! That never happens!
Redsox, just because I have money dosn't mean I'm not cheap!
What the hell happened. GDGD went haywire. Thought I saw the words "Caught Stealing" for a second. If so, no wonder it went berserk. Does not compute :)
Yow. Wigginton's shirt hem is gonna have a nasty bruise tomorrow.
Crap, go to change clothes and Beckett goes all to shit.
Tighten up Josh!
Mofo, I am on the phone w/ hertz and jet blue and then I caom back to this?!
Let's get a deuce!
Every adult has the right to make his or her own life decisions. Each of us has the right to take their own risks, make their own mistakes and their own fortunes. And by fortunes I don't mean monetary riches, I mean life's many riches that come from experience.
This includes everyone, whatever their condition or disability or anything else.
We're lucky if we can make our way in the world with our parents approval, but if we can't, we have to make it anyway. I speak from experience, far too much to go into here, but trust me, I've been there and back, as has Allan.
You have to follow your own path, period.
How on earth did Beltre not throw home?
May it be time to fire Farrell soon?
I also want to second SoSock's observation about keeping the peace. Peace on the surface often means deep unhappiness within. No one enjoys conflict, but if we sought to avoid all conflict, most of us would never move forward with our lives.
I would recommend, if you haven't already, connecting with others with Asperger's. (Seems a bit of a contradiction, I guess, but it does happen.) Support from peers can go a long way.
May it be time to fire Farrell soon?
He's a coach, not a magician.
I was skeptical when they started grading defense, now I am convinced I will never read or believe any of the "statiscal" info that comes with a player, first they told me Ellsbury isn't that good and center and Beltre is an above average fielder, I have watch Beltre play third for a month , and I my deduction with out using any fancy math made up by some nerd. BELTRE IS A HACK.......
May it be time to fire Farrell soon?
I'm pretty sure that evaluating a pitching coach properly is only possible with evidence that isn't available to fans.
What's with the band music in Baltimore?
I'm also indenpendently rich for the next 20 years, I will receive an estate worth 800K this month.
Maybe I should blame Asperger's, but this isn't a particularly sensitive thing to throw in a gamethread of people who work for a living. Telling us you are ok financially would have been adequate.

I've been hoping/assuming that Meun's life skills extend beyond his ability to communicate online. This isn't the first clunker.
Shit, Victor is in his walk year, too. SIGN TEK FOR 5 YEARS! We need a power-hitting catcher! Get 'er done, Theo!
Not to pile on, meunier, but 40K a year for 20 years, even for a single guy, is not all that much money. It's nice, but no more. And god help you if you are planning to live off interest or dividend income because that will be far far less than 40 K unless you strike oil.
But I can see the attraction of stetching those yankee dollars in the DR.
And then of course, you're fifty years old and broke.
I sure hope that "whatever" wasn't in response to me and 9Casey.
I will never read or believe any of the "statiscal" info that comes with a player
That's cool. Just pay attention to the "statistical" stuff instead. That's what they do in games -- not sure what that other noise might be.

Yeah , what she said.....
9C, if you don't pay attention to statistics, how do you know anything about any player? Surely you can't watch every game of every team. How do you know who's good and who sucks? How do you even know which team is in first place and how many games they've won?

Like with everything else I make it up as I go along.....and just keep my foot handy when I have to stuff it somewhere...I believe in stats just am not sold on the new fielding ones yet..
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend people. The whatever was because I was busy with stuff having to do with my trip.
Old-school types analyze statistics as well. They just analyze really crummy stats like a pitcher's wins and RBI.
On this blog, I side with the data-driven types--it's baseball! But at work, you can't fart without someone looking for measurable outcomes and learning assessments, and I tend to fall into the anecdotal camp and argue hard that I don't want to hear no stinkin numbers.
What a hypocrite! Please don't write my bosses.

Ha ha ha, thanks for the laugh.....
JohnGF, I agree that many important things cannot be quantified and measured. I won't tell your boss if you won't tell Allan.
Players have slumps. Or they might be covering up for a small but nagging injury. And there is random chance, which fucks us all over at some time or another. Talent will out.
... and don't make me explain this again! :>)

That's because at work, you're evaluating employee performance over a series of situations that aren't very repeatable (unless you're a McDonalds manager and you're looking at your cashiers' average order time or something like that).
we need more runs.

Funny, one of my favourite bloggers was recently writing about how fast-food employees are evaluated by how fast customers move in and out, but how this often completely conflicts with customer satisfaction, why a customer may need an "extra" 30 seconds or a minute to go away satisfied, and how employees are penalized for that. It was an interesting insight how even that world can't be quantified to such an extreme.
100 pitches for Beckett
You're so right L. I often find the very speed with which I am hustled out the door, or through the line, t be a negative. It seems to really drive home the "you're just a number, and a tiny one at that" sentiment that you are subjected to all the time. It always seems as though they're practically verbalizing "here's your shit, get the hell out o here".
I'm dealing with bosses who answer to accreditation agencies who ultimately answer to Congress. All of them want measurements to prove that students have actually learned something and that money invested in education is not being wasted.
Of course, on one level that makes perfectly good sense.
But when obsessive administrators get hold of something sensible, they are perfectly capable of creating a system where I spend huge chunks of time 'proving' and a lot less teaching.
Grades and assessments and measurements can become mindless fetishes....

Well, you can also log the number of complaints each cashier gets too, but yeah.
At the local Chipotle, it always amazes me how fast they try to rush you through your burrito order. Naturally, this results in its fair share of botched orders and torn burrito shells. The kicker is that they only have one cashier, and the cashier also handles drink orders, so while the burrito servers are busy rushing you through your order, there's this huge bottleneck in front of the register.
It always seems as though they're practically verbalizing "here's your shit, get the hell out o here".
And the employees are the ones who take shit for it when customers are not happy, but they are forced to act this way in order to be employed.
I often complain about all the come-ons and questions at store check-outs - do I want to buy this, donate to that, do I have a points card, on and on. I just want to pay and get out of there, but the poor shlub behind the counter is forced to keep me there, and forced to repeat the same thing over and over all day.
Of and...2 other things. 1st - I'll correct myself. We did NOT start the game with 2 OTTs, I must have still been hungover and/or half asleep.
2nd - This short straying from the game (to take a serious call from a friend about child problems) resulted in a much better return than the last one. The earlier one I came back to a 2 run deficit, this time a 2-run rally. Maybe I should disappear for a few more and hope the trend continues
Well, you can also log the number of complaints each cashier gets too, but yeah.
Most people don't complain, tho. Or else I've been in Canada too long! ;)
Buttplug just got a hit to give the MFY the lead. I think Nick Johnson's head looks like a buttplug.
It's a start.....
They get the S down
V-mart hitting for Van Every.
Let's say that we determined that we wanted to increase the number of swings JD Drew took because we knew that his batting average would be better if he had more hits, so the administrators in charge begun counting a la Obie and giving him charts after his games, pressuring him to take less, swing more often. That's an analogy for the kind of pressure I see at work.
I can figure out ways of getting students to write better or I can give them worksheets so they make fewer technical mistakes. You don't get to do both effectively in my experience, so it comes down to serving the master or serving my students, which, close to retirement as I am, is a no-brainer.
Well, it's what I would have done. And I would PH Yook here. Does Tito concur?
OK, V-Mart, not Yook. cool. P-R for Tek and leave Mart in?
Yook is out with a strained groin.
John, interesting insight. Your students are lucky!
From the Beating a Dead Horse Dept: announcers should care less about whether or not the pitcher getting a win.
That is all.
Is Tek being bush league by not standing at all times when he is on base?
Go ahead, walk him. Bring on Petey
Thank you FDR!
Come on FY..
Oh no, FDR is Beltre, not Scutaro. Well, thanks Marco.
FUCK
fuckfuck
FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!
fuck nooooooooooooooooo,
The ghost of Wendell Kim appears..
Why no pinch runner? Why send him? WTF?
If we PR, who catches?
Why no pinch runner?
I can only assume that we need Victor to stay in at CF.
gotta send him, but remy is saying we have no other catcher, so his mind is going. we would need a CF. send hall out there to run?
***
fuck -- and fucking hall IS OUT THERE ANYWAY!
so his mind is going.
Mine too, apparently. Although I have only been able to listen off and on, so I have an excuse.
On the other hand, I'm not sure that Martinez can field that bunt.
Independent of the pinch runner issue, why do you have to send him? Bases loaded with 2 outs, isn't Drew up next?
Shakespeare!
Independent of the pinch runner issue, why do you have to send him? Bases loaded with 2 outs, isn't Drew up next?
With just a man on third and 2 out, you need a roughly 30% chance of scoring to send the runner. With extra runners, that threshold goes up because of the possibility of a big inning.
Varitek was right at third base when Reimold had the ball in glove, so I'd guess that the chance of him scoring was less than 30%.
BIG K
Don't call it a comeback..
The only way he scores is if the throw is bad...
Nice pitching there...
Nice work, Shakespeare.
Have I mentioned.....
Way to go Mr Bard !!!
That was a nasty slider.
How bout a Lowell HR and a 1-2-3 9th for Papelbon to close it out
Or an Ortiz HR, double, etc...
My damn grass is not getting any shorter. Take this lead now, plz.
sumbitch
home from a long, nice walk just in time to hopefully see us score the winning run.
lezz go
my prediction was not correct
crap. Leadoff hit and 3 straight Ks.
Squanderage.
Gotta go dammit. Grass hasn't been mowed in 2 weeks. And looks like rain may be heading our way.
Here's to extra innings!
Obie: "The Red Sox can't win the game unless it goes into extra innings. But no one knows if the Red Sox really want to go into extra innings, because they're record [in extras] is only 1-4".
Playoff Tito in da house.
my prediction was not correct
May still be
uh oh
Catch the ball. He doesn't seem to get a good read on the ball.
Whew, extras!
Yes, we need extra innings to avoid being swept by Baltimore. *sigh*
Let's go

SRSLY
Red Sox, Y U DO DIS
MOTHER FUCKING GODDAM SHIT
ouch.

Grim. Where are the clutch hits?
dirty does not beget dirty. you easternly folks can just avoid the water and drown your sporting sorrows in alcohol.
This might be the year that separates the real fans from the posers.
Couldn't comment earlier, too much work.
So here I am.
Ugh.
This might be the year that separates the real fans from the posers.
It may be, but speaking as a real fan who goes out of my way to watch or listen to (almost) every game, all this losing certainly makes the prospect of settling down to a game every night less appealing. At some point, I'm watching out of obligation and habit, rather than joy.
I won't lose hope - not on May 2, that's for sure. But I can think of many things more fun to do than watch this team lose.
I agree with l-girl's last comment.
The chances of getting a joyful faceful of muddy water at the end of a game are a good deal less than 1 in 2, and that is just a sad fact. To watch this team right now, one has to somehow pretend to summon a certain optimism not borne out by recent events.
I won't be cheering for another team. And as I said, I think it's too early to lose hope.
But if this keeps up, I won't necessarily organize my life around being available for baseball the way I do now.
There are too many lovely things to do on a summer evenig that don't involve feeling annoyed, dejected, frustrated or (dare I say it?) bored.

Don't worry L ,your boy will be back soon.....
Sorry I missed this game ONLY because I missed a Tek dong. (I was here when he threw out the runner at second.) This is sad. Being swept by Baltimore, being in 4th place, playing below 500. Sigh.
And my final observation about Meunier: the guy said he has Aspergers so his comments and their insensitivity/inappropriateness should be taken in that context. That's why I backed off from giving him advice. We don't know him or his parents or his abilities. Pretty dangerous to give someone advice under those circumstances.
Anyway, just venting and talking to myself. Sometimes it just feels good.
I still can't believe Tito didn't pinch run for Tek. ESPECIALY when he then pulled Tek and replaced him defensively. I hope he's saying, "damn, what was I thinking?" and not trying to say there was a legitimate reason for it.
Swept at Camden. Damn. Glad I wasn't there. I usually go up for a series each year, and probably will again this year. Just glad I didn't pick this weekend.
sosock, he never pulled Tek.
So I'm sure no one will read this, (except Allan) but had to note it here. Johann Santana just walked Jamie Moyer, that's 200 yr-old pitcher Jamie Moyer, with the bases loaded to force in a run. Then he gave up a grand slam to Victorino to cough up what was a 3-run lead. Next a single and a second home run. 8 runs so far in the inning, all coming AFTER there were 2 outs.
Oy
So I'm sure no one will read this, (except Allan)
And me, when I put the comment thru moderation.
SoSock said...

and who was left, a pitcher?
He could have had Hall run, who went out to left field in the next inning anyway.
Or maybe Wendell Bogar could maybe have not sent the Cactus.
I'm not sure it matters who was running (except for maybe LBJ). The ball was hit to shallow left field. I'm with Dr. Jeff. Why send him?
I believe Hall was left - he came in and played OF the next inning
