Red Sox - 050 000 100 - 6 9 1Fun in the second inning against Bergesen (5.1-8-5-5-4, 114): Beltre first-pitch home run (FU, NESN, for missing it) (1-0), Lowrie BB, Lowell single, Nava E3 (2-0), Kalish double (3-0), Scutaro BB, Drew F8, Martinez P6, Ortiz single (5-0).
Orioles - 000 004 000 - 4 8 1
Not fun in the sixth inning with Matsuzaka (5.2-6-4-1-6, 94): Bell single, Roberts double, Markakis single (5-1), Wigginton 1-3 (5-2), Scott BB, Pie K, Wieters double (5-4).
But Scott Atchison (the Sox top WPA man tonight) got the final out in the sixth, retired the side in order in the seventh, and got the first two Orioles in the eighth (Hideki Okajima finished the frame).
Jonathan Papelbon allowed two singles to start the ninth, but with one out and runners at second and third, he fanned both Izturis and Bell.
Tampa Bay was off tonight, so Boston is now 6.5 GB in the WC with 28 games to go. The Improbable Comeback may just be getting started (or not). The Yankees one-hit the A's 5-0 this afternoon.Daisuke Matsuzaka / Brad Bergesen

1996 - Mike Greenwell, Boston's #8 hitter, drives in all nine runs of the Red Sox's 9-8 win over the Mariners. No other player has ever driven in nine or more runs for his team's total score.
2001 - With Yankee starter Mike Mussina one strike away from a perfect game at Fenway Park, Red Sox pinch -hitter Carl Everett singles to left-center. Mussina finishes with a 1-0 one-hitter.

HH Pitcher of Month for August:
1.03 ERA. 6 starts, 5 of which were 7+ IP and he allowed no more than one earned run in any of them.
after all that talk about my dinner last night, time for some good old hamburger helper tonight!
(ground beef mojo? sox 1-0 in september 2010 when tim eats ground beef!)
Squanderrrrrrific.
how informative, red sox game notes giving me bergensen's W-L record for the past 18 games.
i guess it helped me conclude that the team was probably scoring more runs for him in the past 6 starts (3-0) vs. the first 12 (0-7)...
or did he get wins because he pitched better?
FUCK YOU W-L! So uninformative.
OAK - 000 000 000 - 0 1 2
NYY - 010 001 21x - 5 9 1
stupid cici
rogers misses the pitch - beltre dong!
victor is gonna get his head beaten in some day by beltre.
nice error, wigginton, you sucky met reject.
NESN missed The Belter's HR too. Grrr.
still no outs!
must be the ground beef. soon as that shit started cooking, so did the sox!
nesn sucks.
lol remy
need a grand old fire right about now.
anyone listen to castig for this series? wondering if he mentioned a certain book ...
we have forgotten to tune in.
don't let him off the hook, flo.
TIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike-E Lowell.
dice:
10 pitches in 1st
10 pitches in 2nd
Woo Hoo. Ate dinner and went upstairs to unpack a couple of boxes. Came back down to the 5-0 lead and had to watch the scoring inning. Way to go Belter and shift this Papi.
Maybe Dice can hold this lead??
MASN had the Beltre homer.
soooo catching the ball is no longer a requirement to get the force at first?
3B stepped on third to get the third out, not sure why he threw to first.
That was a strange play, the 3rd baseman put his 1st baseman in harms way with an unnecessary throw.
Head in the game?
whats up with the 1pm yankees start tmrw? want to make sure theres luxury seats occupied and get the "fans" out at 4pm so they can make it up to the hamptons for the long weekend before sundown?
oh. there were 2 outs...i thought there was only 1.
apparently so did 3b guy.
I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to start some coals on the grill just so I can roast marshmallows.
that's commitment to marshmallows.
once i saw "coals" my mind immediately went to shisha.
Did you see DiceK's finnish on that pitch up and away, Doh! :)
Shisha? Is that the Hookah stuff? Living in rural Virginia, I don't really know what that is. Although I think a Hookah bar just opened up downtown. I saw it in London last summer and didn't know what it was.
pc:
dice: 10-10-13 - 33
bergesen: 16-36-16 - 68
**in the city downtown** I don't live in the city.
Yeah, the tobacco that goes in the hookah. Its the only context I've ever thought of "coals" in for about a year (except for when I went to allan and laura's and they bbq'ed with coals!).
Interesting, hookah bars in virginia. They actually are sprouting up everywhere, a couple have opened around here recently too.
apparently delgado tore something in his hip.
well, there goes that reclamation plan.
Shis-Ka?
Shish-kabobs.
Had to look it up for spelling.
Okay, coals are started. And, not only do I have marshmallows, I have chocolate and graham crackers too!
So, exactly how does this Hookah thing work? Is there water involved? What do you inhale? What does it taste like, do for you?
when they signed beltre they got a .274 hitter who hadn't hit more than 26 dongs in any of the past 5 seasons.
he's at 25 and batting .321 this season, not bad.
Delgado.
Typical of the season for Boston - consistency at least.
Beltre-not bad at all. I wish there was some way to sign him for next year, but I think the price is going to be crazy high. Unless contracts are coming down with the economy. I don't think you'll see any A-Rod type deals anytime soon. How much longer do the Yanks have to pay for his aging bones?
MrsGR: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hookah#Structure_and_operation
saw a report that the sox allegedly offered victor 2 yrs and he said no.
haha, shisha is just flavoured tobacco, usually fruit ones but also they have other weird flavours, like coffee, honey (good) and rose (also good).
you put it in a bowl that has holes on the bottom and put that on top of a stem/elaborate thingy that has a pipe going into the base, which you fill with water.
cover the bowl of tobacco with foil and poke holes on it, then stick a hot coal (they have specific ones for this) on top to heat up the tobacco.
see pic here
the stem part has a thing for a hose to come out of, and you inhale on the hose, which sucks the air out of the base and pulls the smoke through the pipe, which is submergerd in water. so the smoke effectively gets cooled by the water, and tastes like whatever flavor it is.
all it does is give you a head rush for like 2 minutes at the start of smoking, then not much else. the first couple of times it was more intense but i dunno, its more of a social thing. i guess it loosens people up? i dunno. its not like getting stoned or anything though.
i think the first time i smoked it was in 2008 when drew hit a dong in some sort of come from behind red sox playoff win in LAAA.
Tim, thanks for the link and for the good explanation. It doesn't sound appealing to me, but I can definitely see the social aspect of it.
Plus, I imagine they make great presents!
Evening, all. My last game before we leave for FL. I am guessing I won't be seeing or hearing any of the games this weekend. Family wedding...
Amy, I think the good Dice showed up for you tonight.
Same article, Health effects of Hooka smoking:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hookah#Health_effects
I don't trust the data. Ethnic differences can't be controlled for. Plus cancer in general hasn't been proven, to my mind, to be the cause of the rise in cancer rates. Smoking cessation programs have resulted in a marked decrease in the numbers of smokers while rates have continued the trend with out change.
A more likely cause of many cancers is the rise in local pollutants like car and truck exhaust - the chemicals in which governments are reticent to fund the testing of the effects, quantities or qualities of.
Of the carcinogens we have discovered that occur in cigarette combustion ALL also occur in gasoline combustion
- plus hundreds more we haven't investigated.
As well, our roads are covered with black-top which is mainly the residue of gasoline distillation.
That rainbow of colours you see in the run off at the sides of streets after a rain is oil from the black top that had risen to the surface of the road tar in hot weather, and is now floating on top of the warm summer rain run-off.
How black top evaporates on a hot day and how it distributes in the local air, and any health effects that may have, remains un-investigated.
***
The health effects of marshmallows roasted over an open fire (or coals), also remains un-investigated ... so watch it! :)
With Pedroia likely going under the knife .......and the debacle that was LBJ's season......ya think the Red Sox will take a look at their crack medical staff?

I always felt 20 -30 years ago a lot of cancers what undetected....and a lot of people died without ever knowing they had cancer or knew way to late...
What the hell is a lay flat undershirt?
Don and Jerry totally lost it!
Uh oh... DO's stripping for the camera.
don in prime squeak mode.
jerry says he does not wear an undershirt. don says you have to wear one so when you wear a white shirt, it covers up your stuff.
right as don says "stuff", the woman behind them shuddered just a little bit!!!
Thanks for the warning MH. They were good, though.
My father died from lung cancer at the very young age of 48. He was diagnosed when he was 42. I'll stick with the smoking causes lung cancer theory. But, I do think there is a genetic propensity for cancer that is exacerbated by lifestyle/environment. His mother is 102 and still living, but all of the male relatives on her side of the family have had cancer. All three of her sons (two have died) and all three of her brothers.
Don & Jerry... Bored in Baltimore.
Oh, hell. They're just bored.
I have MASN so I am missing the booth meltdown. Even though they are ridiculous, they do make me laugh.
9casey said... "..people died without ever knowing they had cancer..."
Interesting, never thought of that.
Like the rise in sexual crime which was not an increase of incidents but the reporting of them.
"See the most pulse-pounding physical action around..." I cannot listen to that promo with a straight face.
And her sons all live(d) in the US and her brothers in Greece.
Amy, are you still planning on leaving tomorrow?
Who in your family is getting married?
Okay Dice, time for some more outs.
Mrs.GotRibe said...
I'm sorry for your loss. My mother died of lung cancer when I was 11. Hurts more I think when your young.
"..I do think there is a genetic propensity for cancer that is exacerbated by lifestyle/environment."
I'm really enthusiastic about the near future of real time medical data collection (like real time blood sugar monitors which are now available - the technology applied to many other illnesses), and real time data collection of local pollutants using the web and collected through miniaturized data collectors that can be placed everywhere including on your belt, (now being tested in the field at the University of Windsor, Ontario) which will help us understand this whole thing better.
Genetics I agree must play an important part, but there are too many variables right now to sort it all out, imho.
Hey! The bad guys scored two runs!
shit - spaced out and realized "there goes the no-walker".
Oh Good Golly, Dice. What is this????
Unfuckingbelievable.
Dice K go bye-bye now.
oh, it's totally believable.
Amy, did I say the good Dice showed up tonight? Never mind.
good dice left and went out to dinner after the fifth.
I don't have much faith in this move to the bullpen either. But I know there is not much else to do.
what the shit is this?
MrsG, we are still leaving tomorrow, but moved up the flight to 12. AA allowed changes for free because of the hurricane! So hopefully we will get out before the storm hits New England. I just hope we don't get too much turbulence. Uch.
My niece is getting married---Harvey's brother's daughter. Why FLORIDA? WHY LABOR DAY WEEKEND? ARggh.
And DiceK, you suck.
I hope you have very safe travels and enjoy the weekend. Family weddings are hit or miss, maybe this one will be a hit!
i see my shisha trip was most fruitless.
(lame)
all that talk about hookah...
stupid canada. with their ridiculous taxes on this shit.
a box of tobacco that costs 2-3$ us online, was 17$ + our awesome 13% federal sales tax, almost 20 bucks.
stupid addictions.

I have thought the same thing. Thinking it has gone downhill since the bloody sock incident. I just looked up Dr. Morgan, who performed Schilling's bloody sock surgery. Maybe y'all already discussed this, but he gave up his medical license last year and was (is?) being investigated by the state board.
Thanks, MrsG. I hope so. I am so tense about this trip. And it's a second marriage for my niece. Not that means it won't be a happy occasion...but still, we've been to a wedding for her already! (I know how awful that sounds, but I am pissed off about going to FL.)
What did Dr Morgan do?
so is she from fl? i assumed she was!
i thought of that too as nesn ran the "official hospital of the red sox" ad -- maybe not a good endorsement!
No, she is from Boston! But her fiance is from FL, and she moved down there a few months ago. Her parents still live in Boston.
At least they are all Sox fans. Except the fiance.
bard n pap hopefully here.
guess we'll get an indicator of the sox intentions for the rest of the year...
The speed killer takes third again!
Nice read and tag up on that deep fly.
ahh ok, so there is a reason for it being in FL... wasn't sure if they were just having it down there.
Tim, is that really where you have been? You went out looking to fire up the Hookah? How funny.
No, not a destination wedding.
dinner for most of the absence. i left during the 6th. got back during the 6th :(
ha, i was going to say, out of all the places to have a 'destination' wedding!
Yea, the long innings are supposed to be when the Sox are at bat.
wiggy sucks
Good thing we are playing this awful team. Maybe we can win.
yay, some E-surance!
Wow, we can **pretend** that Slowell the DP!
"good thing we are playing this awful team"
this awful team, that we are currently 7-7 against in 2010 - blame injuries all you want, but the WC lead for FKR is 7...here's half of that.
MH, my youngest brother was 11 when my father died. I was 17. It is especially hard when we are young. I'm not sure my brother has ever overcome the loss, not that he dwelled on it, he just would have been different with a father around. I can't imagine losing your mother at such a young age. I am sorry for your loss.
and yup, went on shisha run while you all talked about lung cancer!
sorry to 'hear' about your family's struggles with cancer. that really sucks.
hasn't hit my family as much yet, grandparents are starting to have various forms of it but of the removable kind....i can only speculate how it will effect their kids and us grandkids...very interesting field of study though.
Yes Tim. Good wins/bad losses, etc. But we seem to have had more than our share of bad losses this year.
guess i should do the honors since allans not around.
hey hey hey!
i did it in the living room.
k, so, win tonight - 6.5.
hopefully sweep cws, and hopefully bal plays well and takes one from fkr. 5.5 then sweep fkr (not likely but sure!) and 2.5 next wed.
we're so in this.
Drew on fire tonight.
I can't seem to get too excited.
if drew cared, he'd be 5-for-3 and not 3-for-5.
tim said...

He-he. Sorry. I tend to get go on about that topic.
I love you, Tim. Go smoke some more tobacco shit.
tim has accepted mitch williams as his personal saviour.
i approve.
i did it in the living room.
I did it in my head.
LOL Amy.
Is there really anybody who is still hoping for the post-season? Or am I just a grinch?
I prefer to worry about next year now. Still love to watch the game, still want them to win and get pissed when they don't. But I am not even looking at the standings.
I'm hoping.
It's a mega-longshot, but I hope they do it.
Wow, Allan. Your faith is amazing.
I'll listen to as many of Tim's scenarios as he wants to throw out there. I was hoping his 'sweep the Rays' idea would work.
No, I'm not looking to the post season, but it is still possible.
Nah. I know it is mathematically possible, so it *could* happen. That's it.
Cy Atchison.
rut row
jeemer.
That was some good pitching by Atchison.
haha, if it was wacky tobaccy, my plans would involve 0.5 back!
alright jeemer - i've a feeling we're not in buffalo anymore.
no reason for not HOPING!
i've a feeling we're not in buffalo anymore.
That might be a good thing.
OMG. How many years are announcers going to talk about him looking down after he pitches?
Now they are debating whether it is deceptive or just part of his motion.
yay!
gary thorne is a huge idiot.
PHI 000 111 5
COL 040 021
suck that, comeback kings.
Yes, but at least Buck Mar-TI-nez is not with him anymore.
How many years are announcers going to talk about him looking down after he pitches?
As many years as he pitches, which may not be many at all.
no reason for not HOPING!
Yes. And I can do that because of 04 (and 07). Without those, I would be praying like fuckin crazy and also raging that I was going to be another year closer to death without seeing a title. Now I can have some faith in a long shot and not worry too much when it doesn't happen.
snuffer time
*passes the hookah hose to amy*
you'll need this.
good start to your hurricane-flight weekend!
there may be some slight turbulence up ahead ...
Thanks, Tim. I have my drug of choice all ready, waiting in my backpack. Better than whatever you're smoking!!
Maybe I should have taken now to get through the 9th.
Well this game is wrapped up, I predict a win for the good team.
As for the post season '05 was amazing, unbelievable.
Here in T.O. it's coming up on 20 years. Faith doesn't happen much around here anymore.
Oh, a base runner dam!
i'll be in cleveland this weekend, missing the games unfortunately. visiting steph's family, but the fun ones! so that will be good.
Arrgghh.
This is a big reason I had little hope this season. The bullpen. Including the closer. The injuries were simply the straws that broke the camel's back.
On another topic from earlier - the 4 run 6th...
Watching Daisuke Matsuzaka flame out I'm reminded of the controversy surrounding his off days throwing regimen.
A couple of days ago I came across Fidel Castro's Baseball Blog (!) where he talks about the way the Japanese and Korean teams prepare, as with Matsusaki, with sessions of off day throwing of 400 pitches or more!
"As for the pitchers, they are obliged to throw 400 balls every day. It they commit any error during the game, they have to pitch another 100. "
http://monthlyreview.org/castro/2009/03/19/we-are-the-ones-to-blame/
Maybe they should try that with Papelbon.
3-2 pitch
Michael, are you a Jay's fan?
Tim, have fun. Not sure which is worse, Florida or Cleveland.
relax, he's just setting up a triple play.
Oh lord.
"gotta make it interesting" (/foulke)
Whoops. That was '04 not '05.
i was going to say - nothing about 05 was unbelievable!
L sez: DP and K
Tying runs in scoring position. Sigh.
is Mrs. L watching with you guys too?
well, no dp.
yes, she is.
Just saying...if this game goes into extras, I am checking out. So annoying.
gift strike there i think. well, maybe not.
yay!
Two.
thankx for the hack
Is she rooting for the Sox though?
The water is Muddy!!!
6.5 GB.
That water is DIRTY!!!!!
Amy,
Watching a team all year you become a fan of the team your watching, so sure I guess, I am a fan, everey spring I find myself over accenting the possitives and hoping for an October.
But I also hate the fanaticism, and I despise the band wagon jumping of most Toronto area fans - who are fans of winning... and hockey.
I'll watch any baseball game that's in front of me and I could easily be a fan of another team if Rogers showed other teams consistently. I can't wait for free on demand MLB - paid for by commercials. The network TV model I'm holding out for.
Wet seat.
OK, dirty water! Pap not making it easy.
yes, she is/was.
Three.
Dirty>>Clean.
Good night everyone. Amy, have fun. I hope everything goes smoothly.
Tim, enjoy Cleveland. I always have.
500 pitches for Papelbon, for making us scared!!!
Michael, I can understand that. I became a Sox fan when we moved to Boston and they were the team I could watch. Of course, that was all before there was cable or internet. The only baseball you could watch was whatever was on the local stations or the Game of the Week.
Bye, everyone. Hope there are good games this weekend.
yay cleveland - well, its not like downtown cleveland. some sort of suburb. it should be good nonetheless.
good luck with your travels tmrw amy! hopefully all goes smoothly and the weekend is enjoyable for you.
enjoy the chisox series everyone, and manny back @ fenway.
back on monday for TB!
Fun in Colorado:
PHI - 000 111 90
COL - 040 021 30
Yay - a win.
Went to the NC Whitewater Center yesterday. Missed the game, but had a LARGE time. Manmade river just for whitewater. Rafting/kayaking trips/lessons, etc. And the band last night at their big pavillion/bar/grill out over the water. Much fun!
I have finally stepped off the bus. I guess it was Monday, when another week had gone by and we had not only failed to gain, but were another game or so back. I always said if we were withing a game per week, it was no problem. We're past that now.
Of course, I told the driver to keep the engine running, and if we can put together a little streak, I'll climb back on in a hurry!
As Allan said - hey, it doesn't hurt to hope.......
