Yankees - 000 003 000 - 3 5 0 Red Sox - 001 100 000 - 2 8 0Lester (6-5-3-4-7, 108) lost the lead in the sixth and the bats did next to nothing over the final four innings. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, and Carl Crawford seemingly anchored to first base, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Josh Reddick both struck out looking against Mariano Rivera.
Jacoby Ellsbury's RBI double in the third and David Ortiz's fourth-inning bomb into the right-center field bleachers gave Boston a 2-0 lead, but Lester let it slip away. He opened the sixth by walking #9 hitter Eduardo Nunez (on eight pitches after getting ahead 0-2) and Derek Jeter singled. Curtis Granderson singled to left-center and Nunez scored. Lester walked Mark Teixeira to load the bases with no outs. Lester battled Robinson Cano for nine pitches, and got Cano to ground into a double play. But Jeter scored and the game was tied. Then Nick Swisher quickly doubled home Granderson.
The Red Sox had the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth when Joe Girardi pulled Bartolo Colon (4.2-6-2-1-2, 94) and rushed Boone Logan in from the pen. The lefty Logan struck out Adrian Gonzalez on three pitches.
After Colon left the game in the fifth, Crawford was the only Boston player to reach base. He doubled with two outs in the sixth, but Salty grounded out. And he singled in the ninth, but tried stealing second only once (the first pitch to Reddick, which was fouled off). Amazingly, Rivera did not throw over to first base even once.
Bartolo Colon / Jon Lester

Gonzalez has hit in 14 straight games (.483, 28-for-58). ... Ellsbury has reached base safely in 17 straight games.
Abraham: "Counting the postseason, the teams have played 190 games the last 10 seasons. The Red Sox are 96-94 and have outscored the Yankees 1,043-1,004. The average score has been Red Sox 5.4-Yankees 5.2."

On June 10, Craig Counsell was 3-for-3. He has not gotten a hit since.
He is 0-for-45 (50 PA) -- matching the longest single-season hitless streak by a position player in history going back to 1900.
Miss you all. Expecting a big, giant, smothering W for Amy's birthday.
I've wished Amy a happy birthday via Facebook and text, but now Nick has raised the bar, I'll do it by thread as well. :)
Happy Birthday, Amy! Here's hoping you end up happier than H tonight.
Nick, we miss you, too! Say hi to Emma for me.
"0-45"
Paul Zuvella-esque!
0-45. It's mind-boggling.
Thanks, Don! We want to hear more about Derek Jeter. Because we hardly ever hear about him, and we really want to know how he's doing.
Announcer syntax: It was April and on fire was Dustin Pedroia.
I have a question for threaders, totally off topic.
Does anyone know a commercial that starts with (something like), "The last time [that happened], the earth was flat..."?
If you hear an ad that starts like that, will you take note of what it's for, and let me know? TIA
Im excited to see this Jeeter kid I've been hearing so much about. Sounds solid, though his lack of power and range in the field may mean he's little more than a bench player.
Back when the earth was flat, wow, that WAS a while back! The SEVENTIES, I think.
Will add it to my list of projects.
LD!!!!
Big celebrity sightings, one that Jere and Allan will enjoy.
I see Steven Tyler behind the plate too, I think.
yankees had better curb their enthusiam.
Ha ha, I thought you'd like seeing Mr David.
Re ad, thanks. I should have made a note of it, but I was too busy laughing.
remy's top-drawer analysis: "jeter hits it to jacoby ellsbury for the first out of the game."
adds so much more to don's pbp, which was basically: "jeter hits it to jacoby ellsbury for the first out of the game."
I see Steven Tyler behind the plate too, I think.
That may be Phyllis Diller.
"Take it from the big mouth"
I imagine Joe Perry and Steven Tyler texting each other:
Joe: Plans this wknd?
Steve: Going to an event Fri night.
Joe: Ok, I'll be at a ballgame.
Later, Joe spots Steven behind the plate through his binoculars from the bleachers.
There goes the no-hitter and the no-walker.
well, here's a case of a non-wakefield pitcher "losing it" and hoping he gets it all back.
two consecutive pitches in the EXACT same spot (sez gdgd and amica) - one ball and one strike
Lesterdini!
Good eye, Jorge.
I gotta go make a rare ferry pick-up, but I leave you with this: make yr predictions for when Steven Tyler goes home. I say after bottom 7, he's gone.
past a watching jeter ....
Yooooook
I think 7 innings is a full game for front-running celebrities. I say 4 innings.
But I won't be watching him!
red sox baseball brought to you "in part" by ________
what part is each company bringing to us?
Wow, what a tool Bob Davidson is. Thanks for the link.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMY!!!!!
Hi NIck...miss you too.
ooooh, heidi is going to tell us about a little-known way to get into fenway!
Big Papi's public tantrum was very ill timed. Was it Allan who suggested it was connected to his recent slump? Not good at all. He has to keep cool as he gets his swing back. If he follows his GIDP with a productive hit or two later this game, perhaps all will be forgotten. But, I don't see it coming. Prove me wrong, David.
Oh did Jeter get his 3,000th hit? I hadn't heard. Thanks again Don & Jerry.
bert got his foot down in time.
sox players will likely see that replay of the late slide....
CI CS!
HA HA HA HA
Way to go SalTALA!!!
Remy: "You put that in your back pocket and you remember it"
CS!!!!!!
Umps are at their best this game!
Thanks for running into an out, Jeter. You made up for the bad call.
The Craw!!!
Nice catch, CC
sox players will likely see that replay of the late slide....
Maybe they'll throw at Joba's head in his rehab clinic in Nebraska.
Crawford with a nice catch. Is anyone else surprised how few chances he has had to make great plays out there? He had a good throw to the plate the othe night, but not many web gem catches.
i would not call ortiz's pop-in a tantrum. and i think it was too short to have much of a life of its own. (i know don or jerry barely mention things that happen outside of the game in progress, but have they mentioned it?)
also, many people have assumed he is frustrated at his slump ...
Oh geez, turning the fan-gets-ball-from-Beckett story into an ad for the day-of seating.
wait wait wait -- you can get tickets for red sox games at a red sox ticket window at the red sox's home park????????
great investigative reporting, heidi!!!!
for a team with an alleged "sell-out" streak still going on, they sure do mention how fans can buy day-of tickets an awful lot.
Don & Jerry haven't mentioned it. It's not something they would talk about. The only announcer who would might be O'Brien.
I can't see it as a big deal, but maybe if I listened to talk radio I'd feel otherwise.
the crying kid - he (along with his father and grandfather) was in a nesn studio being interviewed last week(?). it was the first game all three guys were at, which is cool. but the kid gave 1-word answers the entire time. i think jade mccarthy was doing the interview. i don't know how she got thru it.
her: it must have been amazing to get that ball from josh beckett. what were you thinking when he walked over and handed the ball to you?
kid: it was amazing.
her: i'll bet you haven't let that ball out of your sight since you got it.
kid: yeah.
her: you'll have a great story to tell your friends when school is back in session, huh?
kid: yeah.
her: so i hear that josh beckett is your favorite player...
kid: yeah.
****
it was brutal. you really got a sense of the talent it takes to push a dead segment on towards its hopefully quick conclusion.
Allan, I think Remy must be reading JoS. He's doing more commentary now.
LBJ!!!!
Here we go baby!
LYNDON grabs some wall.
Your boy's getting more expensive by the day, Laura.
LBJ!!!!!!!!!!
It is SO difficult to interview children. And for me it was usually by phone, a million times worse.
I know, I love it. I want the Sox to pay through the teeth to sign him. A monetary form of public apology for slagging him while he was injured last year.
Hey, now that more people are around, please see my question above about the ad. If you see it, please let me know what it's for.
Reddick (with lots of pine tar on his helmet) reminds me a bit of Trot. If he gives us Trot's five best years, that would be pretty good
Rogers tells me the future of Toronto baseball was called up to the Jays. "Plus he's Canadian." Look out.
Lester!!!
He needs a nickname. I'm surprised both he and Josh Beckett are nicknameless.
do they mention his name? i remember they mention the year he was born so ...
Brett Lawrie
Born: Langley, BC
January 18, 1990
Laura, that commercial does not sound familiar. Is it a national ad?
Wicked Lester is sometimes called Sid.
Why Sid?
Lester = Sid and sometimes Houdini
Oh yes, definitely Lawrie. I've been hearing about him off and on all season. Pride of Langley, BC. They try to bring up and hang on to Canadians, but it rarely works.
Kat, I'm thinking it was a national ad, because it was well produced, like a car ad, not like, say, Sullivan Tires. We were cracking up, and I didn't think of writing it down for future reference. Always a mistake!
QUADRANGLUAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEDAZZLED!
QUANDRAGULAR!!!!
Papi says you can't take that RBI away!
Beyond the bullpen!!
Of course a national ad in Canada might not even appear in the US...
Beautiful swing! Way to go Big Papi!!!! Make us forget a little off field mishap.
we thought he looked like sid vicious.
all that equipment in the nesn truck -- and they still can't show us all of the pitches.
Are the tech staff in contract negotiations or something? Or maybe Jerry offended someone and is trying to atone.
Beautiful
don: "where andruw jones was headed, i don't know, but he's out #3"
Andruw Jones isn't used to being on base.
Rudolph! Nice play.
As predicted, there's another look at that slide.
A, how many pitches has Colon thrown? Girardi's on the phone with the pen.
FUCK YEAH!
HAHAHAH - MFY with no catcher in the bullpen!!!!!
colon 94
Girardi sees EB at the plate and panics, calls his pitcher who just started warming.
wtf? was logan up much earlier? 2 soft tosses and into the game?
thx
odd hook, too.
down only 2-0, loaded but 2 outs.
colon got EB twice already.
backfire spectacularly, pls
maybe girardi had his planned for bert, but forgot to get him up earlier.
Squanderiffic!
3 pitches??? Yikes
i hate this new nesn - "stay tuned for some stupid segment we threw together"
nesn should make sure it knows how to show an entire game -- and it does not yet know how -- before adding any bells and whistles.
Yep, it's a promo for the promo. Stupid.
wtf was the commercial? a fake talking baby? (and did they miss the first pitch to nunez at the same time? i'm not sure...)
After they say that, I see a Canadian ad anyway.
Sounds like a fake talking baby in their Sox for Life ad series.
SHOW THE GAME! SHOW THE GAME! SHOW THE GAME! SHOW THE GAME!!!!!!
All we got was the mlb.tv "Commercial Break in Progress" screen.
like a special effects thing where they move his mouth? could that possible be what they were making a fuss about? and mentioning twice that if you want to see it again, go online. what an embarassment.
outs, pls
Outs, please
OK, Houdini, time to wriggle free.
Re NESN ad, I don't know, I couldn't see it, but that's what it sounded like.
I do like their ad with the bride watching a game at her own wedding. It's the first clever ad they've done - ever, I think.
dicks on the pond
DP! Tied but worth it.
important: strand the guy at third.
Huge DP. Thanks for the outs.
Don: taps foul. That wasn't on our list yet.
Plus we got two new ones last night. Sends foul, and... ... ...errr... what...
fuck
what did i just say?
Guys, you've got to listen to Allan.
Youk, Papi, CC... you guys must find a way to get a run or two.
When will they learn?
Bah. OK, now RSVP.
okay, my next instructions:
score 3 or 4 runs here.
ola! runs, prease.
Steamed Spinach is here for good luck
happy birthday, amy!
Crawble!
I thought that was going to get past him.
Anybody named Boone is not good for the Sox.
I was waiting for someone to say that.
Let's play some wall ball
Well, I'm nothing if not predictable.
What is it with walking the #9 batter? That really, really hurt Lester in the 6th.
I just figured someone would say it. You didn't want me to be disappointed.
SALTY has a GUN!
SalTALA with the arm tonight!
Another CS!! Niiiiice.
let's get back to scoring a shit ton of runs in the 7th.
always good when don is yapping about some stupid shit like twisted tea and calls one pitch and the count includes 2 pitches.
"home save opportunities"
good lord.
And Tyler leaves after bottom 7! Nailed it.
There should be a booth rule: if you mention that Fenway has gone quiet, note when the crowd goes back to making a lot of noise.
How could you tell? Did you really see him leave?
There should be a booth rule: if you mention that Fenway has gone quiet, note when the crowd goes back to making a lot of noise.
On national broadcasts, it's often not quiet at all. Even as they (coughjoebuckcough) insist the crowd is depressed and sad, you can hear steady chanting/cheering. ... On NESN, it is usually a pitch or two.
And so what if a majority of the crowd is quiet for a few minutes. (The entire crowd is never silent.) What does that mean, exactly?
L: Just got home, saw Tyler there, noticed at end of bottom 6 he was leaning way down, and I was like, "He's packing up his stuff!" They came back from commercial for top 8, and he wasn't there. Could be he just left temporarily, but I'm guessin' he's gone.
By the way, I'm here with 2 other people, and I brought up Allan's Phylis Diller remark, and I said how I said "take it from the big mouth" and they told me that was NOT Diller, but Norma Rae. But I thought Allan said that because Tyler has a big mouth. Isn't that weird?
Tyler brings stuff?
I said Diller because Tyler (who I did not see tonight) often resembles an old woman wearing makeup.
don rehashing the cliff lee bidding -- in early august ...
help us out, sultan.
ellsbury up 6th in the ninth ....
"resembles an old woman wearing makeup."
Yeah that's what they said, which made me bring up the earlier Diller talk.
Norma Rae? You mean Sally Field?
I didn't see Tyler either.
Well, at least we get to face Mo in the 9th. We've got a shot!
bot 9th is ez...load em up, get 2 outs, then ells can knock a couple in for the W.
I have my doubts about Randy Williams's ability to keep this a 2-3 game.
Re quiet crowd, usually it just means you can't chant forever, and now you're just watching. The national media obsession with it is ridiculous.
OTOH NESN is really irritating you these days. You need to get your filter checked. Or buy a new filter. Or buy a filter.
Which is not to say that NESN is not irritating.
yeah, maybe i have listened to YES tonight to give me some perspective...
Nice catch, Reddick
Which reminds me, Jere, you weren't around last night to say I'M GETTING ENGAGED
Funny moment I captured of Tyler behind Pedroia in the 1st.
it could always be worse, at least it's not the hawk.
How about some 'over the wall ball' in the 9th. At least one against fruitbat. CC, Reddick, Marco??? You gotta do it, cuz tomorrow could be ugly with Lackey on the mound.
I.G.E. works for any huge dong moment.
nesn is doing some new and very stupid non-baseball stuff lately, though.
i can't believe NESN was actually advertising the shit out of a commercial earlier! the "red sox for life" thing or whatever. a promo for a promo! awesome.
IGE: I thought it was player-specific, like Sweat Powered or Fuck Yeah
Tim, I know, soon they'll be advertising their upcoming promos for special promos advertising the debut of a new ad.
Aceves in.
A week of no decisions for the Sox starters. Last decision was Lester's 11th W on July 30th. Let's keep it that way by getting Lester off the L hook with a run or two in the 9th!
I just thought he was yelling IGE as an exclamation for a home run at the time, but, sure, it could be the Call of the Reddick
salty water, please.
OK, here we go. RSVP
let's have some free money from flo, then we'll go about winning it
Earlier in the car, Joe and Dave had a woman from Shaw's in the booth, talking about color-coded foods at the supermarket. It was so bad I actually chose to listen to Sterling and Waldman. Later, I checked back, and the Shaw's woman was still on, and it was the bottom of the NEXT inning. I guess since it's the "Shaw's Red Sox Radio Network," they can make their ads as long as they want.
Now that's a plan.
weak shit
give him the gold glove!
The Craw strikes again!
OK rally time. Wait, when is Scutaro up? Ok we are ok for a few batters.
Did Jeter just point at Texeira and say it was your fault?
Soooo close to making that nearly routine play.
Saltala Mo Killer
Jere, that happened to me a few weeks ago with a guy from Foxwoods, only without Waldman/Sterling. I'm at work, I only have radio, nowhere to hide, and it's a Foxwoods ad for 2 full innings. The guy trying to prove what a big Sox fan he is. ugh.
gonna have to check brooks on that.
Fuck, that was a big out.
OK, Reddick, time to get engaged.
Home plate ump seems inconsistent tonight.
"give me one chance to steal"?
you get only 1 shot - you are safe or out!
fucking clean water.
ugh.
Two backwards K's to end the game. Weak.
Reddick still a single man. Clean.
Not much you can do in a world where balls are strikes.
paint the black, you devils.
The dreaded Double-Beltran to end it. The first K was a ball, 2nd one looked like same spot, though I woulda swung at both.
Brooks sez outside on strike 3 to saltala.
super tough pitches, but you can't be that choosy in the 9th. plus FB gets an extra wide zone.
This was my only chance to thread for the NYY series. Enjoy the weekend, I'm sure the water will be undrinkable.
Reddick was just inside according to brooks. Oh well, time for sleep. Enjoy the weekend L!
Would have been nice if Lester had gotten those same calls on those same edges of the zone back in the 2nd and 6th.
brooks has salty's a tad outside. nothing to grab a pitchfork and torch about, sadly.
They've got 27 championships. I'm burning down the village.
Quality reporting from this CFL game...
I wish the globe would do game recaps using JoS threads!
