I watched the first three innings live, then finished up the tape in the evening, so this game felt like it went on for about seven hours. ... Boston swept the Royals -- completing their first 6-0 homestand since July/August 1998 -- but they still allowed Kansas City to score too many runs.
Kansas City scored a run in the top of the first when Ruben Gotay doubled to right and scored on Matt Stairs's single. Jose Cruz badly misplayed both hits. On Gotay's drive, Cruz watched it go over his head and then stopped and braced himself, as if he was going to play it off the right field wall.
However, in Fenway, the right field wall is only about two feet high -- and the ball easily bounced into the stands for a ground-rule double. I don't know if Cruz could have caught the fly ball, but he should have known to at least make an attempt. ... On Stairs's RBI single, Cruz didn't charge the ball; his "throw" to the infield bounced before it got to first base.
Matt Clement walked the bases loaded in the third, then hit a batter and surrendered a three-run double to Terrence Long. The Royals led 5-0.
Boston came back with one run in the third (RBI double from Edgar Renteria) and eight runs in the fourth -- highlighted by Jason Varitek's first career grand slam and a three-run double from ER. Renteria also walked in the first and bunted for a hit in the ninth. ... Not a bad game the day after the Manny Collision.
Royals starter DJ Carrasco had a bizarre pitching line: 3.2 innings, 1 hit, 5 runs, 1 earned run, 7 walks, 4 strikeouts. ... At the end of four innings, the Red Sox had only three hits, but led 9-5. ... There was a total of 19 hits and 15 walks in the game.
The Yankees blew a 2-0 lead, then trailed Cleveland 3-2 before scoring twice in the top of the ninth and winning 4-3. They are still 4.5 games behind.
just wanted to let you know if you didn't already... remember when you posted links to the journals of sox players such as arroyo, varitek, and renteria about a month ago? well unfortunately those journals are not actually of the players. they are actually the work of some poor souls who have nothing better to do than pretend they are major league baseball players. it is really too bad, for i'd love to read an actual daily journal of my favorite sox players.
ReplyDeletewell unfortunately those journals are not actually of the players.
ReplyDeleteDuh.
