It was a good one -- as Beckett (8-6-2-1-8, 116) bested Peavy (5-9-3-1-3, 111). The Red Sox got three in the third (RBI singles from David Ortiz and Mike Lowell and a sac fly from Manny Ramirez) and Varitek blasted a 3-0 pitch for a home run in the eighth.
The Giants beat the Yankees and the Blue Jays shutout the Rockies, so Toronto is 11 GB in second place and New York drops to third, 11.5 GB.

Josh Beckett (3.14, 143 ERA+) / Jake Peavy (1.98, 202 ERA+)
This should be a good one.
Beckett moves up a day in the rotation, though he'll still be working on four days rest. He has a 1.59 ERA on the road this season.
Beckett's ERA is 8th best in the AL. Peavy leads the NL -- and is second only to Dan Haren (1.78) in all of MLB.
Mike Lowell is 4-for-8 against Peavy with two homers and three RBIs.

Tito confirms that Kason Gabbard will start Tuesday and says he might get 2 or 3 starts.
Crisp 8
Cora 4
Ortiz 3
Manny 7
Drew 9
Lowell 5
Varitek 2
Lugo 6
Beckett 1
Lugo is 0 for his last 23, but is also 2-3 againist Peavy.
Toronto's Dustin McGowan pitched 8 no-hit innings against the Rockies at Skydome, but gave up a single to start the 9th.
I'd rather rest Lowell's thumb than sit Youk two days in a row.
The Jays have had so !any of those! Dave Steib alone had 4 or maybe 5?
NESN today, thank somebody. Enjoy the game, everyone. I want to concentrate without the chat.
Uh, that's supposed to say many, not !any. Damn tiny keyboard...
Is the strikezone really wide or is Gameday off?
Peavy and Beckett are each at 12 pitches after 1.
Lets see whether 2/3-against-Peavy Lugo can sack up here.
How long until Lugo's average drops below Beckett's?
swamped at work, so will just be checking gameday every so often.
Sox take a 1-0 lead on three straight singles with one out. Peavy's up to 62 pitches.
Manny sac flies and Drew hits another single. Finally a coaching visit to the mound.
Cool -- but I thought "Good pitching always beats ....."
Maybe I'll keep this open for news. Computer will run faster without Gameday.
Gimme updates!
Singles and runs keep coming. This is fun.
Varitek nearly blows it open there.
Some poor defense but we'll take our runs where we can get them vs. Peavy.
Sleepy bat syndrome for the Yanks again? Giants up 2-0 vs. Mussina; 2 on, 2 out in the 3rd.
Score?
Tek ends it with a fly to deep left.
3-0 good guys.
Blum (who's got a lower avg than Peavy) singles. Peavy bunts him to second. 1 out.
Cruz sac flies Blum to third but Barret grounds out to Lugo. Still 3-0.
Also SF is still up 2-0.
Lugo grounds out but Beckett singles. Beckett's avg (.222) is now above Lugo's (.194).
Crisp flies out to RF. 2 outs.
Cora walks but Papi flies out to end the inning. Still 3-0.
Gonzalez strikes out swinging and Cameron strikes out looking. 2 out.
Greene doubles to left but Branyan flies out to end it. Still 3-0.
First and third, one out for the Yanks. Lowry (P) lays down a bunt -- run scores, everyone safe, 3-0 Giants.
I can feel the frustration from here of all the Yankee fans who were in the corner bar earlier then went down to the park for the game.
And SF up 3-0 over MFYs with men on first and third with two outs.
Schierholtz's run came after singling, stealing second, and advancing to third on Nieve's passed ball. Winn would also steal a base, but Vizquel ends it. 3-0 SF after four innings.
Nieves is a really shitty backup catcher.
Meanwhile Ramirez and Drew keep the singles coming.
Lowell pops out in foul territory. Tek up with men on first and second with one out.
Tek watches five pitches and strikes out. Lugo will too.
Nope, he grounds out on the third pitch. 3-0 after 4.5.
Nieves grounds into a DP. 3-0 SF after 4.5 too.
Kouzmanoff walks on four pitches.
Blum hits another single, raising his average above Lugo's. Two on with none out.
Nieves is a really shitty backup catcher
Yeah, but glass houses and all that ...
Baseball players still have bizarre names. Terrmel Sledge pinch hits for Peavy (111 pitches).
And doubles. 3-2 with none out.
Even Dougie's hitting above .111 though. (Too lazy to dig up meaningful hitting stats.)
Moose is out after 5. Chris Basak gets his first ML at bat.
And lines out.
Sledge advances to third on a grounder to Ortiz. 1 out.
Barrett grounds out to Lugo. 2 out with Sledge still on third.
Gonz strikes out swinging. 3-2 after 5. Beckett's at 79 pitches and coming up to bat.
Meanwhile A-rod's up with the bases loaded and 1 out in SF.
Royce Ring in to pitch.
Beckett grounds out to him. 1 out.
Crisp grounds out to second. 2 out.
Cora singles to center. 'Tiz up.
And Ks swinging. 3-2 after 5.5.
A-rod's still fouling off pitches in SF. (10 pitch at bat so far.)
Cameron grounds out to Lowell. 1 out.
I see Papi learned nothing from his ejection - still whining.
And tossing shit.
A-rod grounds into a force out at third. 3-1 SF with two out.
Greene and Branyan fly out to Coco. 3-2 after 6.
Matsui grounds out. 3-1 SF after 5.5.
Manny walks on 8 pitches.
Lowell DP. 3-2 after 6.5.
taking a break -- i see i have the san diego feed again. all 3 games.
same thing happened in arizona -- the fri/sat/sun games were the snakes feed. some local station, not the faux affiliate
weird. is it a west coast thing? be good to get back to the tee-vee tomorrow.
We'd better get NESN this week or you'll be very unhappy.
MANNY!! Our gold glover out there. (Plus a nice big outfield.)
Beckett starts the 7th. Kouzmanoff flies out at the LF track.
Vizquel strands men at second and third. Still 3-1 SF after 6.
nice track on that manny.
Kouz's would've been out in most parks.
Blum flies out to CF. 2 out.
HBP with Beckett's 101st pitch.
Kouz hit it 356 feet. Manny caught it one step in front of the 357 sign.
K to end the 7th. 105 PC.
Beautiful work, Josh.
Good to get out of that himself.
Beckett's up 3rd in the 8th and now we can go to Jeemer to start the B8.
If everything stays the same, the Jays will hop over the Chokers into 2nd place.
Tek!!!
Tek adds some insurance. 4-2.
FUCKIN' A!!
Tek HR on a 3-0 pitch.
Beckett will hit this inning, it seems.
Is there time for him to hit for the cycle? He's already got the triple.
Look!!! Lugo's on base!!
Damon steals 2nd and advances to 3rd on a shitty throw, but Fieval and the toad strand him. Still 3-0 SF after 6.5.
WTF? Beckett is batting?
Looks like Beckett's sticking around for another inning.
TCM is pitching for the MFY.
TCM v. Bonds now.
No one believes me.
Walked him.
And walks him. Yesterday wasn't his throw day after all?
FTR, I disagree with having Beckett hit there.
l-girl: it's just too inexplicable.
Too true.
Schierholtz sac flies. 4-1 SF.
(After Klesko's single put Bonds at third.)
Feliz flies out. 4-1 SF after 7.
TCM's era is up to 5.09.
If/when everything stays the same, what are the standings?
BOS 48-26 ---
TOR 37-37 11
MFY 36-37 11.5
Was away -- now see Flo looked at 3 strikes. I assume he pissed and moaned.
Oo baby, that is sweet.
Watch the Jays fans start crowing that they're in 2nd place! Ha.
Time for The Snuffer.
"I assume he pissed and moaned."
I missed the AB.
Gotta love the fat guy in there raising his ERA.
SF keeps padding. 5-1 SF.
Durham doubles. Now 7-1 SF with Bonds up.
Bot's all, folks!
Got to love The Snuffer!!
Great game, I really enjoyed it. Good thing, too, since it's my only game in a week. ($%&?! west coast games.)
"Bot's all, folks!"
Good name for a blog. :)
Will our "good luck" friend "jeff" stop by?
SoSH thread says Papi was bitching again.
Good guys win. Now to watch the lesser of the shitties win in SF.
You remember jeff, right?
In last night's thread:
jeff said...
if you think CYoung was tough, just wait for Peavy. Good pitching always beats good hitting. Good luck. You're gonna need it.
Sun Jun 24, 03:52:00 AM
Pfffft.
Today, good pitching beat shitty hitting.
Love him or hate him, everyone's happy when Bonds gets HBP against the MFYs.
Villone digs them out, though.
Hey Jeff, I guess your man Peavey never met up with a bus driver before.
Jeff probably knows something about singles night.
Jorge strikes out to end it in SF 7-2.
CI also made his 12th error of the season. (Lugo has 9.)
Tavarez may not be a porn star, but he'll still ask a man's wife to tug on his balls.
Episode 29 - Trapped
First Aired: April 14, 1956
RALPH (looking at Bibbo): That'll be the day when a bum like you can take care of me. I suppose this is the first time you ever ran into a bus driver, isn't it? ... Alright. I'm going to take you guys downstairs.
(Some of the script is here. Warning: the site has sound.)
Tavarez may not be a porn star, but he'll still ask a man's wife to tug on his balls.
"Tavarez also programmed his phone number in their cell phone and promised them tickets for the next home game. They were psyched!"
!!!!!
Wait. The Red Sox's next game in San Diego? That could be awhile. ... Or could it (World Series)?
Or were they from Boston?
I assume Boston, but you'd have to ask Jere's cousin.
Lugo hasn't gotten a hit in his last 26 ABs.
Nice find, A! We should check it against the DVD for accuracy.
Bibbo! Who knew those guys had names.
PS: I was right, it was "ran into"! Today I wrote "met up with" but I've been saying ran into all along.
How's about Beuhrle to the Red Sox?
So Beckett's the first 11-game winner this year. But just think: if the Sox had forfeited every one of his decisions, we'd still be tied for first place and half a game up on the yanks.
Remind me why Orlando Cabrera got away...
Remind me why Orlando Cabrera got away...
He simply cannot hit -- career 87 OPS+.
Hmmmmmm ....
I see that Lugo's career OPS+ is 88. ... And it's 44 this year.
Anyone know whether Lowrie could field (if he'd been called up)?
Remind me why Orlando Cabrera got away...
He can't hit a lick.
No one could have predicted Lugo would stop hitting.
When Lugo's head is not in his ass...Cabrera and Lugo are basically the same player...But I would say Cabrera plays a better short...
You have to think ,even though they have him signed , if this continues there is no way we head into August with him as the shortstop....

Sean did, where has he gone he was good for a laugh or 2..

That's one way to put it.
I think he got tired of being held accountable for his typing.
So who can we get at SS?
Lugo:
Trade? Lugo is in the first year of a four-year deal at $9 per. No one is going to take a guy hitting .190 with that contract. I don't think he's going anywhere.
Bench? Not likely. Maybe Einstein will get some more time.
He has sucked so bad that there is very little chance of Tito quickly zipping him back up to the top of the order if he went on a six-game streak. So that's good.
The Sox will likely ride it out. He's not doing us much good, but at #9 he'll get the fewest PA of anyone. Plus he's not killing us standings-wise, either.
No one could have predicted Lugo would stop hitting.
Can anyone else hear this in Condoleezza Rice's voice?
It's true that there was not really any way to predict Lugo wouldn't hit. I think he'll come out of it, but in the meantime it is indeed painful. Not sure if it's right, but the broadcast today pegged him as having the worst average in the ML among "qualifying players".
Cabrera's hitting .334/.452/.823 as of today. Career OPS of .727 isn't terrible or anything. Of course there wouldn't have been any way to predict he'd be hitting well in the third year after the Sox decided he wasn't good enough for the long term, but still.
The Chicago Tribune sounds very serious about Beurhle to the Sox. Lester and others for him -- would you do it? I would -- he's 28. Not too far off in terms of age and what we could possibly lock him up at for three or four years than Beckett.

I don't think they can I don't care if he doesn't get another hit the rest of the season, do you want the ball hit to him......EVER!!!!!!!!!
I read that article about getting Buerhle. I will not be happy if they trade Ellsbury.....
I'm not quite sure but I don't think there are too many suits concerned about my happiness.......and that is sad...
I would say there is no way they trade Lester......I would send them Gabbard and Hansen and or Delcarmen
"Clemens ended the longest stretch between regular-season relief appearances in major league history at 22 years, 341 days, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Steve Carlton went 15 years, 343 days between relief appearances in 1971 and 1987."
And what a shitty relief appearance it was.
Tavarez may not be a porn star, but he'll still ask a man's wife to tug on his balls.
I was there for that. I was at all 3 games in SD. I saw that from the side and wondered WTF was going on there. He was playing with people all day that time. He would throw to the SD girl and every time act like he was gonna throw the ball into the crowd but he wouldn't. he even said she was prettier then the people in front.
My personal accomplishment was when he walked away from the fence where he acosted that guys wife was I caught his eye and gave him the supportive point and nod and he pointed back and nodded. He was playing to the crowd all three games during BP. I fell in love with him. He is how I would be if I were a Pro. And he signed autographs for maybe 30 minutes today. A real class act.
