Gordon Edes, Globe, May 17, 2007:
While talking to Julian Tavarez the other day about his impoverished upbringing in the Dominican -- he never went to school, sold newspapers, cleaned shoes and helped his dad, a construction worker -- Tavarez sheepishly admitted he had an odd ambition as a kid. If he couldn't be a baseball player, he said, he thought he might have a future as an adult movie star. ...Thanks to Red at SG.
The way Julian explained it, he was exposed to a lot of that stuff as a kid, and saw it as a way to a better life.

That is very sad.
Being sexually abused as a kid would help explain how he ended up so crazy. (Being emotionally stunted would also help explain stuff like his motorcycle scheme.)
Jesus...thanks for the visual...I have to go throw up now.

Hey, it's part of life. Whether you think about it or not, it's happening every day.
If what Phrenile wrote made you feel sick, imagine what it's like to live with it.
I think MCW meant the perhaps mood-dampening visual of SL's visage in a porno.
...
(motorcycle scheme?)
Julian's situation should not be taken as being sexually assaulted as a kid.
His situation was more to do with poverty, resulting in lack of parent supervision, Coupled with the the economic necessity for children to work. All this leads to children getting exposed to adult stuff, porn, smoking etc. Stuff that makes them feel like they are adults.
Unfortunately this is true for kids in impoverished households anywhere in the world. Be it the Caribbean , from where Julian comes from (or India, where I originally come from and where I have heard stories like this).
While Julian might have behaved crazy many times, he has had a longer career than many pitchers can hope for, and makes money enough to qualify as living an american dream.

Bullshit.
Kids from homes with money are exposed to all kinds of shit, too. If you think having money equals having proper parental supervision, you haven't seen any typical rich American kids.
And kids from poor families are not necessarily exposed to sex at an early age.
You're dealing in stereotypes, and they don't really hold up.
And PS it's often the parental supervision who's exposing the kids to sex. You can't blame that on poverty.
