Something I Learned Today

Words of wisdom from a now-banned commenter:
"There is such thing as an over-reliance on facts."

29 comments:

  1. Do you ever notice how fans of a certain team want to stop by and talk baseball when they are 4 GB and not 10 GB?

    It's odd.

  2. A true gem. Sometimes you just have to let the proven facts go, and go with your disproven thoughts, eh?

  3. To Keith:

Rule #3: "Ideally, comments should be a bit more substantial than "Manny roools!!1!" or "Yankees suck""

Posts consisting of one number are not substantial and your choice of number indicates you are trolling. Doing it more than once is spam.

    Trolling + Spam = Banned

  4. If I may offer a word of advice about trolls (and goddess knows I've had LOTS of experience with them), communicating with them through comments tends to keep them going. I learned this the hard way, trying to talk back to GSJ. When I finally gave that up, he went away.

Presumably your trolls will not stalk you at other blogs like he did.

  5. I know. I'll learn eventually.

  6. It took me forever. The urge to talk back is very strong.

    Use the force, Yoda.

  7. Taking the ban route is always the way to go, allan. That quote is pure, beautiful 180 proof trollbait, and L's strategem is hella annoying but hella cool. I learned the hard way on the interweb support forums when i was but a laddie. Or something.

Man, I make no sense! To make up for this:

Julio Lugo .867 OPS since July 8th.
Jason Varitek .606 OPS since July 8th.
Mike Lowell .818 OPS since July 8th.
Dustin Pedroia .846 OPS since July 8th.

    Soooooo yeah.

  8. Tim you forgot one OPS - Drew in last 15 games - .801

Other, minor thought isn't it Jere who is always complaining about the Bot blowing saves at games he attends. Wasn't he at Camden Yards for these three games?

I can't remember who it was but if it was Jere, then well, sorry Jere maybe your jinxeness moved to Gagne.

    j/k

  9. Hey guys., Just got back after a family picnic in Stratham, NH on Sat. and then the girls had a baby shower in the much underrated Salem, Ma....

Tough ones an Fri, and Today

Dice, Beckett, and Schill were all fantastic..

As for today's game to let Okijima star the inning and not finish is unfair to him and Gagne....

Tito has to let these guys do thier things ..Has he ever pulled Oki in game like that all year?

Set them up to succed not fail ... Especially for the fact that Gagne is used to closing and he will usaully start an inning......Was really suprised on the quick hook for Jeemer.....

We are going to have take care of the Devil Rays....anything but a sweep is really not good......Tremblay has the O's playing well , maybe they can take 2 of 3 from the Yanks..

Wheter we still have a lead or not this next series is huge.....

  11. It's great to be a positive, optimistic red sox fan. I consider myself one as well.

But this blog is sounding more and more like a Baghdad Bob press conferenece every day.

Yes, we're still in first place.

But there's no denying these blunt facts: the Yankees have gained 10 games on us, Gagne can't get anyone out, Okajima is fading, Manny is down to .290, Papi still isn't producing at Papi levels, Drew sucks, our biggest RBI threat lately is Julio Lugo, and we've choked away a lot of games that should have been won.

Those aren't the rantings of psycho, panic-striken Red Sox fans --- those are facts.

    ReplyDelete
  12. No, Baghdad B. would say we've clinched the division.

I'd certainly rather have our old 10-game lead back than the one we currently have, but the media -- who obviously want a very close division race because it's a better, more exciting story -- is way out of line in pushing the 1978 Redux angle.

I am trying to counterbalance that with some other facts that seem to have been ignored in the hysteria to convince Red Sox fans to give up on the season.

And some Red Sox fans apparently have surrendered. One blogger someone linked to today conceded the division to NY after Friday's loss -- which he actually called possibly the worst loss of his life as a alleged Sox fan.

This annoys the living fuck out of me.

  13. Joe, did you say Okajima is fading? 2 runs, 4 hits, in his last five innings pitched. Maybe you and Theo are drinking the same kool-aid ?

  14. People of Joy Nation, The day has finally come ...starting today Comacast here in Waterbury and Surrounding towns have fianlly added NESN......

Thanks to all of those who had signed that petition a few months ago.....They said the main reason they added was due to the constant pressure....Who knew..........There are still about 8 towns in CT without NESN , here's to hoping they add it soon....

    WHOO-HOO!!!

They said the main reason they added was due to the constant pressure

To me that's the best news of all - a lesson in consumer activism. Get on that company's case, show that lots of people feel the same way, and don't let up, be a terrier, be a pit bull. (And I mean that in the best possible way.)

Those last 8 towns have to take hope and follow your example.

He said (and I agreed) that he was concerned Jeemer might be being overused. It's a legitimate concern.

No Kool-Aid necessary. (God I hate that expression! Can't people just have opinions without being accused of being under a spell?)

  17. But there's no denying these blunt facts

    Here's another blunt fact.

    We're in 1st place.

No other 1st place team that I'm aware of faces this kind of panic and hysteria over not having a (unsustainable) 10-game lead.

Obviously everyone is going to have a different take on these things. It's not like I'm not at all concerned - I am. But so many people are acting like the season is actually OVER, the division lost, all hope gone.

I think some people here are trying to give a reality check to that attitude.

  18. I was scared to click that link, but it wasn't nearly as bad as a feared.

    Still stupid, though.

    I need a "media over-reaction" meter.

"If you are banned, you are banned forever, even if your later attempts to comment conform to the rules."

  20. Nice.

Sorry about that one, RS. I'm not new to this dealing with trolls thing, I just couldn't resist that...I'm bad with the whole self-control thing.

Nevertheless, I made my point, he saw it. I will make a diligent effort in the future.

  21. No problem.

It seems like all trolls follow the exact same pattern everywhere they go:

They show up, try to stir shit up, get deleted/banned, then cry censorship, then say "fine. fuck you losers", then come back and post as if they are longstanding, members of the community.

Seriously, all of them do it the exact same way every single time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'll say it again.

Yankee fans can post here. So can Mets fans, Giants fans, Brewers fans, whatever.....

And naturally, you can disagree with me. (Several idiots have told me that I allow only people who think exactly like me.)

    Just follow the rules.

  23. They show up, try to stir shit up, get deleted/banned, then cry censorship, then say "fine. fuck you losers", then come back and post as if they are longstanding, members of the community.

True. I've seen it many-a-time in my heyday of message board posting.

  24. Sorry about that one, RS. I'm not new to this dealing with trolls thing, I just couldn't resist that...I'm bad with the whole self-control thing.

Tim, I'm the exact same way, as you can see if you go back through yesterday's game thread.

I learned the hard way on my own blog about the never-changing pattern of trolls. Redsock is so right. They always come back acting like "now I just want to be part of the discussion" and whine about how you're censoring them. (And if your politics veer left, forget it, they seem to think it's much worse.)

The one time I went against my better judgment and gave one a second chance, he ended up flipping out, cursing at me and everyone else on the blog. You know what they say, fool me once...

  25. Re the "alert" system, I love how they don't have a "we're still in first place, take it easy" category. I guess that's what "concern" is supposed to be.
