Kelvim Escobar (3.40, 127 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.40, 104 ERA+)
None of the Angels have ever faced Matsuzaka. Sean McAdam calls Dice's season "predictably unpredictable" and wonders which pitcher will be on the hill tonight?
Will it be the one who allowed two runs or fewer in 17 of his 32 starts this season? Or will it be the one who allowed five or more runs in 10 different starts? Will it be the one who struck out seven or more in 17 starts? Or the one who walked three or more in 17 outings?Escobar did not pitch against Boston this season. While Lugo (4-for-7) and Crisp (5-for-14) have hit Escobar well in the past, Ortiz (4-for-24, .167) and Manny (7-for-32, .219) have not. Opposing batters hit .337/.417/.535 against Escobar in September after a .192/.279/.233 August.
Mike Scioscia said that Vladimir Guerrero will "probably" play right field tonight; Garret Anderson (0-for-4, 2K in Game 1) will also be in lineup, despite his pinkeye.
Coco Crisp talks about playing center field at Fenway:
You take [Beckett's] 94- or 95-mile-per-hour fastball, his curve, what he likes to do to the guy on strike two, is he going to set him up with the high fastball. Are they going to throw the guy away or pitch him in? You take all that into consideration on how you're going to play the guy.Josh Beckett's strong of 19 consecutive Angels retired tied the Yankees' Mike Mussina for the third-longest string of outs in the postseason, behind two other Yankees: Don Larsen (26, in 1956) and Herb Pennock (22, in 1927).

Before that, at 5 PM:

i love you. i haven't done anything the last two days except sit on my couch and watch countless hours of you.
p.s.
dicek, please follow becketts lead.
Today's lesson:
If you have an open mind unpolluted by years of blindly accepting what ignorant fools tell you, learning smarter ways of watching baseball can be quite easy.
NL teams off today. Diamondbacks and Rockies both up 2-0. Come on, Cubs!

History has absolutely nothing to do with what will happen in these two series.
I love the FireJoeMorgan story about his mom...except that he makes his 54 year old mother seem old. Hey, 54 is NOT old!
I absolutely LOVED it when Jeter almost fell on his ass whiffing last night. My dad and I burst out laughing. Fantastic. Thanks, Derek! See? You can be entertaining!
redsock, I read that Sox/Angels "history" article. And I couldn't figure out A. how they could say the Angels have history on their side from the examples they brought up (it was something like, "they've been down 1-0 four times, but they've come back to win twice!") or B. how it's on our side, as I never saw them give an example (maybe that we're 2-0 against them in postseason series?). But I was skimming....I remember thinking what a horrible, long article it was. And all this aside from, yes, the fact that what happened in the past won't be hanging over the park tonight.
Also, I show Larsen walking the last batter he faced in the game before the perfect game, then getting the 27 outs in the perfect game, then getting the first seven batters out in his next post-season game, in the '57 Series. So that's 34 total. Even if they just mean "in one game," it would still be 27.
I've been looking for the Mussina streak, but I only found where he got 14 in a row out, do you know when his 19 was?
I liked Guidry's excuses for Wang not being able to adjust. Don't know why; they had plenty of time to speak with him between innings, heh, heh.
Also, is Guidry wearing some kind of Muu-muu over his uniform, or what? Too many pizzas this season, Lightning?
Dice-K will pull it off today. I'm writing this in class right now and i don't give a shit about my teacher.
Ah, I get to watch the game tonight, hopefully the whole thing. Missed the entire Beckett game because I was working, just checking in every few minutes at GDGD. Anyway, it's been too long since I watched a playoff game I cared about- GO SOX!
Oh, and on a completely unrelated note: I'm going to be in Toronto next week. Any special attractions, 'can't-misses', and pretty much any kind of recommendation for things to do?
I think Carmona's gonna give the Yankees what Sabathia did not...but I don't know who to call the winner today...I think it's gonna be very close...like a 3-2 or 4-3 ballgame. But hey, if it mirrors yesterday, I won't complain.
Go Daisuke! I'm really stoked for this start. I think it's gonna be fun.
As a teacher, I ain't impressed, Charlie.
jere, i was wondering about larsen's prior and next starts/appearances. i guess they mean one start -- not sure about mussina -- baseball-reference should be helpful.
Torre's putting up the same lineup today as yesterday. No start for Duncan or Giambi as many Replacement Level posters are howling for.
Is there a telephone number to call for updates on scores? I may have to drive somewhere for the second half of the game.
Jere - I'm pretty sure it was the 2003 series vs the Sox, but might have been the 2002 Series. I am pretty sure it was a game vs the Sox though.
RS - was going to put up the combined numbers for the 3-4-5 hitters vs the 7-9 hitters vs Escobar. Hey, Tek hits .318 with 8 walks vs Escobar.
will be watching a fair amount of the mfy game, so i'll be puttung updates through.
1 out, 26 to go for carmona, not glue.
CI - 3 pitch K.
:>)
Damn, is Carmona throwing as well as he seems to be on GDGD?
I'm glad I'm not seeing Dane Cook's face for MLB. I know he's Cambridge, MA and all, but he's hilariously unfunny and I believe Bill Simmons saw him once weaing a MFY hat. Now Mr. Cook, unless you were trying to be funny wearing that, please understand what an offense something like that could possibly be to Sox fans. Stick to shitty movies I won't watch and leave baseball alone.
Hi guys
Been out a while.
Went to a local bar to watch the 1st game on a big screen. Got home late and hit the sack ASAP.
Taking my wife out for her birthday tonight - will mis the 1st inning or 2 but should be home by 9.
Her favorite restaurant is only open for dinner on Fridays or we'd wait for tomorrow to go.
So, the Yanks go wimpily in the 1st, I'm off to have some VERY fine wine at a great restaurant, and I'll be watching the Sox take a commanding 2-0 lead later.
LIFE IS GOOD !!
Hi SoSock. I will also miss some of the game in order to eat tonight. At least there is a tv at the bar at the restaurant we are going to so we can check scores now and then between courses and glasses of wine. It seems only fair that we will miss the end of the Yankee game and the beginning of the Sox game.
Seems both Pettite and Carmona are pitching well tonight.
Damn, Cabrera homered. 1-0 Yankees.
OK, score some runs off Pettite now.
Dud dong in the 3rd. 1-0. MFY.
I'm enjoying the WCBS broadcast so far.
Quite a pitchers' duel going on in Cleveland. Anyone else watching?
Fuck the heck, Lofton???
Why would he try to steal 3rd with 2 outs?

Dear Travis Hafner,
Please hit a fly ball.
Thanks.
i hate that little be-dimpled, milkdud troll.
LEZ'GO TRYBE!!@!@
that beard makes hafner looks quite simian. yikes.

dear baseball,
i love you. i haven't done anything the last two days except sit on my couch and watch countless hours of you.
I loved this. I feel the same way.
ok pet-tit is not that good. the fuck.
I'm going to be in Toronto next week. Any special attractions, 'can't-misses', and pretty much any kind of recommendation for things to do?
Ofer, it's a fun city, and a really easy one to see, as the main attractions are all in a pretty small area. I recommend picking up a copy of Time Out Toronto.
Also, if you want to email me at the address on my blog, I can make some recommendations. Tell me what kinds of things you like to do, I'll steer you in the right direction.
jesus fucking christ cleveland, you fucking losers, way to convert.
glad im a sox fan.
I loved this. I feel the same way.
forget xmas, THIS is the most wonderful time of the year.
At this point, I'm just rooting for no extra innings, because otherwise I'm sure TBS won't show the Sox game
The Indians NEED to MANUFACTURE a run. Fausto pitching a gem. Pettitte's pitching a gem. I think you'll see Pettitte for 7, Chamberlain 8, Rivera 9. 9 outs to get 2 runs. Come on, CLEVELAND!
That's 0 for 8 for ARod in the series so far.
WHAT A FANTASTIC CATCH BY GRADY!!!!!
i'll take a brak brak gnod in the ht9.
At this point, I'm just rooting for no extra innings, because otherwise I'm sure TBS won't show the Sox game
They'll start the Sox/Angels game on TNT. They did that last night when the MFY/CLE game overlapped with CHC/ARI.
i'll take a brak brak gnod in the ht9.
haha, english please?
A-Rod ain't hittin' yet. I don't care if the media gets on his case or not about it, but it's a good thing.
Can Cleveland pull this one out? The missed opportunities don't bode well. Carmona has probably pitched measurably better than Pettite, despite the HR.
Good game, eh.
They'll start the Sox/Angels game on TNT. They did that last night when the MFY/CLE game overlapped with CHC/ARI.
Thanks!
2 on, 1 out, for Chamberlain. Can he live up to the playoff experience? All they need is a base hit. Right handed power pitcher... The Indians can handle him.
Jason Michaels v. JtC
1st/2nd, 1 out.
Franklin Gutierrez PH.
css - K
Now Casey Blake.
easy fly to rf. fuckin clev.
Well, jtc and fruitbat will have to go through the top 6 of the Indians order to grab a W tonight.
I was enjoying the WCBS broadcast...until this dickhead said, "What a jobba by Joba."
Though it's true...
shit.
carmona deserves a win.
bugs. i'd go insane if i was there.
PASSEDFUCKINBALLA.
man goes to second, 0 outs -- bunt on the cunt?
Me too.
CLEVELAND HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: BUGS!!!!
Joba looks like a COW out there. All the bugs on him feasting on his neck. Glorious!
bunt on the cunt = love it
only the 2nd out. ripped to mcvauhpaubcpiupvuw though!
tough break
FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
love that dumbo
PAASSSWEDDDBAALLALLALAL!:LASEKFJBSD:K>fgna'sdlrtymv' esth jestym
PASSEDBALLAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WILD thing!
Not in a GOOD WAY!
Whew...Cleveland somehow manages to score. Jesus.
the cunt is falling apart!!!
WCBS dork totally blames the bugs. Says it's not Joba's fault at all, that the bugs "spoiled his pitching". Are they that bad?
shoulda leaned into that one. take a base.
bugs are out of control -- jtc is covered -- but the hitters have to deal with them too.
building a park by the ocean = bugs (/can)
am i buggin' ya???
i love how the bugs are against only the yankees. crybabies.
(of course if the mfy get runs against the clev pitchers, it will NOT be because of the bugs. it will be mystique.)
It looked like as Joba was walking off the field, the bugs were following him.
Anyone coming into the game from here on out should be absolutely COVERED with repellent.
hi all. this is fun!
damn, those bugs are making me itchy.
this guy is doing well amid the bugs!!! must be a joba thing.
'Nother chance for A-Rod heroics.
tbs calling abreu at second "the winning run" -- this is not the bottom of the inning
idiots.
If this game goes into extras, we don't know where our game goes. We don't have the tbs/tnt thing here - just one Canadian station getting all the postseason feeds. I wish they'd tell us already.
tbs calling abreu at second "the winning run" -- this is not the bottom of the inning
idiots.
they need to stfu with stupid comments like that. tbs are not doing a good job so far with the games. making fox look like the fucking bbc.
Damn. Fausto's getting bugged too.
If this game goes into extras, we don't know where our game goes. We don't have the tbs/tnt thing here - just one Canadian station getting all the postseason feeds. I wish they'd tell us already.
Hmm... WTIC? Haha.
If you can't get the game before the Yankee game ends, we've gotcha covered.
tbs was calling the cleveland go-ahead run "the winning run" also. stupid, but not necessarily biased.
making fox look like the fucking bbc.
LOL :)
I really like Chip Caray. Shows a lot of emotion. I dono what he was thinking by saying the winning run, but he's been terrific. The other two have been decent, but Chip has been good. I like his voice.
Thanks, Ish. I guess it'll be GDGD and you guys. But we'll go nuts if we miss even one pitch.
(Although WTIC is not such a silly idea. We could go outside and see if we can get anything on the radio.)
fruitbat v bugs.
Fruitbat should be eating those bugs, you'd think!
The Boston Bruins season is starting. I turned it onto NESN, and I'm probably the ONLY viewer right now.
and now I'm on TNT. NESN has no more viewers.
The name of the game is who gets bothered most by the bugs. Perez looks awfully bothered. We'll see how he pitches.
Fausto Carmona was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING tonight. Minus one pitch.
TNT is now showing the Red Sox game.
Red Sox have not taken the field yet.
G-- Damn, I/d been listening, but just turned on the tv. those bugs are AWFUL!
I like Chip Caray, too. He used to do the Orlando Magic games back when I could stand watching basketball.
Now the Sox have taken the field, Dice is throwing his warmup tosses.
thank god our game is starting. let's go sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *howl*
ish, thanks so much - looks like we're covered!
1-2-3 TENTH FOR THE YANKEES.
Here we go TRIBE!
turns out we are getting the game on mlbtv -- not blacked out and i didn't but the post-season package. and yet ... :>)
so we are watching, while waiting for the clevelands to win.
thanks ish.
ish, thanks so much - looks like we're covered!
They're showing the Sox game now?
Fruitbat should be eating those bugs, you'd think!
HAHAHA! Oh, Ish, thanks for that...
Ah, good! No problem, Sock/L
nope, we've got the nyy/cle on tv and the sox on allan's computer. (and the game thread on mine!)
allan had to move over to the couch with me. :)
Fruitbat should be eating those bugs, you'd think!
that's hilarious! good thing sarah repeated it, i would have missed it.
Goddam Rogers Sportsnet. 4 Regional channels and not one is switching over to the Sox. I thought that was the point of regional channels. If it were 2 friggin NHL games, they'd find a way. A plague of locusts on all his houses.
Fruitbat pitching to Grady Sizemore.
woti, i agree. a sox pox upon them.
i hate cheering for someone named grady!!!
allan had to move over to the couch with me. :)
Never a bad deal, huh?
How did Figgins retire? I'm on GradyWatch.
figgins K
figgins: cbfff k
says allan
o-cab: bbcfbff bb
it was very close
11 pitch AB for Grady. Full count.
Sizemore is working a long AB.
nice! watch out malphabet.
Sizemore swung and missed but PASSEDBALLA!!!!!!!! Posada went to grab the ball, threw to first HIGH, Grady PLOWED through Minky but the ball went above Minky and to Cano.
WINNING RUN ON FIRST.
dumbo being dumbo -- god he sucks back there
Sac bunt. GRADY to second.
1 OUT.
WINNING RUN AT SECOND for Hafner.
WINNING RUN ON FIRST.
yes, see, tbs, this would be the right contextual time to say this phrase.
GOOOOD changeup from Dice-K!
Just in time to see one game end (I hope) as the other starts. I have to find TNT on the cable here.
Hafner goes down 4-3
Sizemore to third, 2 OUT.
passedballa for the win????
Victor Martinez will be intentionally walked.
Two on base already against DiceK?
So, corners with 2 out, Ryan Garko the man to get the job done.
two on, but no one has scored, and two outs.
dice is up to like 30 pitches. come on mangggg(((
GARKO HBP. Bases loaded, 2 out.
Fruitbat argues that Garko leaned into that one.
THERE you go Dice!
Phew, he struck him out. Let's hope that's DiceK's one bad inning.
JHONNY PERALTA batting now.
yeah dice! gets out of trouble.
if only his first name was gonnie.
gonnie! ha.
breaking ball outside corner freezes izturis. whew.
31 pit for dice.
loaded in clev
Peralta strikes out.
To the 11th.
hehe.
fuck - K in clev
to the 11th
Going to the 11th in Cleveland. Damn.
Dustin growing the same beard as Varitek.
i think FY grows the beard so he won't get carded in bars
Rafael Perez still pitching for the Indians. The bugs have thinned as of now.
Canadian Soldiers. I wonder how many perished in the path of the ball being thrown at 95 MPH.
Milk-Dud: F9
Youk pulls it to a full count.
WALK. Greek-Jewish God of Walks.
canadian soldiers? do they have ads for them on tbs?
Duncan pinch-hitting for Minky.
tbs guy: "is that a youkilis at bat or what?"
redsock: "no, he did not whine and cry at the ump during it."
canadian soldiers? do they have ads for them on tbs?
I'm not sure, but that's the name of the bugs that invaded, if you guys didn't know. Flying ants, basically.
yooooook
I wonder if that Frank TV guy could do an impression of a Canadian soldier.
Bugs called Canadian Soldiers? Is that a joke? Canada isn't exactly known for being militaristic.
PAPI!
BIG PAPI going WITH the pitch.
I'm not sure, but that's the name of the bugs that invaded, if you guys didn't know. Flying ants, basically.
Wow, that's weird. Cuz we see ads for the Canadian armed forces.
The bugs are really named that? Or they're just ragging on Canada? :)
FLO!!!
Let's go MManny.
Allan was right, though. They like to hang out along the lake. Canadian soldiers. They'll be around for one or two days before moving on, apparently.
Come on, Manny---be Manny!
DUNCAN: 6-3
Canadian soldiers are called peacekeepers.
Bugs are called bugs.
L, when the Indians game is over I'll wiki the bugs for ya.
Nah, that's ok, ish. I'll file it under "whatever".
DAMON: K
1-2-3 FOR PEREZ.
WHAT A JOB by Rafael Perez. Watch out for that Indians bullpen come ALCS time.
Come on, Doc. Drive someone in.
Come on, Cleveland, score a run. How annoying that they have not taken advantage of all those leadoff men on base (though it's fine if they do that when we play them).
SOX ON THE POND.
Luis Visciano pitching for the Yankees.
Waldman: Frankly, I don't know how Visciano will do.
the walk doctah!
Canadian soldiers are called peacekeepers.
Oh, come on. You know you want your own middle eastern quagmire. I hear Iran's nice this time of year...
Drew, be a post season hero.
Visciano vs. Lofton
Sox on the pond?? What does that mean, Ish?
Go, JD!
WOOOOO!!!! WHAT HAPPENED!?
FRICKEN YANKEES GAME.
sarah, unfortunately canada is in afghanistan, freeing up us forces to do their job. "holding the bully's coat".
oct 27: deman all the troops come home. be there!
On FIRE!!!!
JD "I LOVE YOU" DREW
2-0 SOX
ON FIRE!!!!!
Red Sox = execution
on fire he is.
LOFTON: LEAD-OFF WALK.
amy: "ducks on the pond" = men on base.
so, sox on the pond...
Tek, you need to hit a HR to stay ahead of Ortiz in the post season HR records.
Franklin Gutierrez's job is to bunt here.
Gotcha about the pond. New one for me.
OK, Tek, no HR. But we scored two.
re: ducks on the pond.
jere says when it comes to mfy, it's dicks on the pond.
0-2 for Gutierrez... will they keep the bunt on?
Laura, the Afgans lucked out!
Sorry, I should probably keep this sort of thing out of the beautiful baseball conversation.
sarah, no problem afaic. i like the mostly-baseball-partly-politics game thread. :)
Again, leadoff man on for Cleveland. Will they PLEASE bring him home?
Mmmm afghans.
