Manny Being Mummy

ALSO: Clev-NY Game 4 thread.

Pat Borzi, New York Times:
Unlike his game-winner Friday night in Boston, when Napoli left the area of the plate before he did, Ramírez admired this briefly. He flipped the bat, stuck his arms in front of him and walked toward first base.

"Manny did the Mummy a little too long," Crisp said of Ramírez's monster-like pose. "But it was cool."

A-Rod is going to look pretty awesome in a Red Sox hat next year.

Joe Torre should have Mariano Rivera pitching right now. He is earning his pink slip.

Amy said...

I want CLE to score more runs. I don't like a 3 run gap.

Ofer said...

Dumbo .143
Shemp .182
Abreu .214

Redsock, since we're doing this, could you post those Ortiz' ALDS numbers again? They were kinda good, IIRC...

Gotta hold 'em at 6. It ain't May, Joe.

Kelly Shopach is looking pretty good today. Why can't we get players like this?

Amy said...

I can't stand the thought of ARod on the Sox. I don't care how good he is. I hope Theo realizes how bad he would fit into this team. Keep Lowell. (I am a sentimentalist, sorry.)

allan said...

ORTIZ

SHOP-VAC!

s1c said...

What we nee is FB to implode and then my night will be complete. (except for those fragging cowboys).

Whoa!! He's not bringing in Fruit bat!!

Amy said...

Shoppach is hot! Hope he cools down after tonight.

s1c said...

Amy - Actually, I think that if A-Rod was a Sox, in the Post Season he wouldn't be a bust. I can just see big Papi and MBM taking him under their wings and saying. Look, man, just have fun!!!!

Ofer said...

Torre wants to see if Veras can get out of this by himself. Then he'll know who he can trust when the really important situations come.

allan said...

way to let a shitty pitcher put two guys on BEFORE you go to fruitbat. clueless joe.

Anonymous said...

Ah, fifty-thousand idiots who introduce themselves as "Vito from the fuckin' Bronx" just had a little Joe Torre chant. If Joe Torre had managed your team better, you might have won the division.

Also, this sort of stalling for time shouldn't be allowed. If the manager makes a mound visit, he shouldn't be allowed to intentionally walk someone and take out the pitcher afterwards.

Ofer said...

2.417 OPS

I think one of my favorite moments in last night's game was when Papi's OPS went down about a .100 when he singled...

allan said...

I have changed my tune on Slappy.

I want him on the Sox. Big time! I don't think it'll take 30 per to get him, but let him come to Boston, tear it up all year and then go nuts in the post-season (esp. against NYY).

Rob said...

Hopefully this will be our final look at Fruitbat.

Re-signing Lowell is a bad idea, period. Sure, he had a great year, but he's going to get a 3-4 year deal. 33 year olds with a batting average 44 points higher than their career average aren't a great bet for the next 4 years.

allan said...

Love it!

Amy said...

I know I operate a lot on sentiment and heart, but I really like Lowell (tho I agree three years is too risky), and I really detest ARod. But I concede that GMs can't operate on the basis of sentiment.

SoSock said...

That may have done it right there.
I have to admit I thought any talk of letting Torre go was pure BS. I still King George is an idiot if he does so, but God knows - He IS an idiot. And not bringing in FB to start this inning could well cost Joe his job.

allan said...

damn, wanted jetes to bobble that.

8-9-1 for mfy in the 8th, down 3

allan said...

And I love knowing the FO will make its decision with a clear head, without thinking of emotion and the feelings of the fans. Way better than the other way around.

I'd like Lowell for one more year (tho not if they think they can get Alex), but that's it.

allan said...

Betancourt.

That arguement holds little weight seeing Theo gave Drew a 5 year deal and he will be 32 in Nov.

Betancourt is the most underrated player in baseball this year.

FIVE OUTS TO GO!!!!

s1c said...

I'd like Lowell for one more year (tho not if they think they can get Alex), but that's it.

They are not going to spend 30 million + for A-rod. Luccino loves him, but no way is this payroll going to be in the 175 mil area.

Lowell for two years at 18 mil would be fine with me.

allan said...

PH HGH (cf) K 2-3

FOUR OUTS TO GO!!!!

SoSock said...

IMO
Lowell should get another year with an option for a second. He's earned it, but I doubt he would take it, he'll be looking for longer, and I wouldn't go there unles it was for money that could be justified on a part-timer.

allan said...

but lowell probably would not sign for only 2 yrs.

can't see 30 million -- that's like 50% more than the highest salary right now!!!

Anonymous said...

We've got a lot of money clearing up this year. Schilling, Lowell, Clement, Timlin, etc. Probably Crisp in a trade. Maybe even Manny in a trade.

9casey said...

s1c said...

He'd take less to play in Boston he already played that card...

And are you all convinced he would not go back to shortstop....

Amy said...

Get Damon out. I don't want to see him up again this year.

I agree---can't see the Sox spending enough to get ARod. Fine with me.... As for Lowell, time will tell, I guess.

allan said...

damon (bbcf) K

THREE OUTS TO GO!!!!

s1c said...

can't see 30 million -- that's like 50% more than the highest salary right now!!!

Boras is his agent and he is talking in the 36 million area, or 30 + and part ownership of a team.

This is Boras and I guarantee it will be 30+ mil.

tim said...

Anyone else notice that the TBS announcer just said that Kei Igawa was a product of the Yankees farm system?

Just wanted to mention that little bit of ignorance.

Rob said...

THREE MORE OUTS.

Will be bring in Joe B for the 9th?

Amy said...

Love to see Damon strike out.

allan said...

That arguement holds little weight seeing Theo gave Drew a 5 year deal and he will be 32 in Nov.

Drew and Lowell have had quite different careers.

allan said...

so the 08 MFY could be without

torre
dumbo
fruitbat
slappy
abreu

... but they'll still have damon!!!

allan said...

Boras can talk all he wants. Boras cannot simply demand and get 30+.

How many teams can (or are willing to) spend that $$? Only a few. Not a big market out there.

Amy said...

Meanwhile, during inning breaks, I am giggling out loud about FJM. Thanks again for the tip.

allan said...

two hits to start it off.

In what way. they are both career 280 hitters and lowell averages more rbis and hr's per year

Ofer said...

I can't fucking believe that Cleveland's closer has a 5+ERA and more hits than IP. He must have had a lot of saves where he gave up 1-2 runs to get to 45.

Let's hope he doesn't do what he did back in April. Wedge, too, for that matter, leaving him in there.

Rob said...

It's not just about getting A-Rod, but if you get A-Rod you still need to field a good team around him.

s1c said...

You only need two - Cubs and LAA, that is two. I also wouldn't be surprised to see either San Fran or LAD jump in the fray. He will get the 30+.

Amy said...

Mariano melting down?

allan said...

well, i will be surprised. 25 maybe -- 5/125? -- but not 30.

then again, if vernon wells and soriano got what they got, who knows?

we shall see.

Anonymous said...

If Soriano can get 20 million a year, A-Rod can get thirty

A-Rod this year, 96 VORP. Soriano last year, 48 VORP. The year before contracts, A-Rod was twice as good as Soriano. Hell, maybe A-Rod is worth 40 million.

Plus, this is closer to A-Rod's career numbers than last year was to Soriano's career numbers.

allan said...

could this be rivera's last game as a yankee?

allan said...

noodle saves the bat's bacon.

Rob said...

Adventure time.

Amy said...

Last three out coming up....

Anonymous said...

Lowell is a career 111 OPS+ guy. Drew is a 130 OPS+ guy (including this year, which brings the numbers down). They're not really the same player at all.

Amy said...

So James says the closer is lights out, Ofer says otherwise. Where does the truth lie? Should I be nervous or calm> ? (Like I have a choice.)

allan said...

Isn't this the most fitting, though?

Two teams who shared the best record in all of baseball will go head-to-head on Friday night. The two best teams in the AL, dueling for the Pennant.

Amy said...

Doesn't Frank sing?

Well, I sure am glad that closer is bad, now that the ALDS is over!!

s1c said...

Watching the celebration, reminds me. A lot of talk today on WEEI about the Sox overdoing thier celebration.

Got to love Boston. They freaking complain about a celebration. A lot of callers also called with complaints with the way the sox played.

I had to agree with one of the hosts, "are you bleeping, bleeping kidding me!".

3rd straight year the MFY's go out in the first round. Yeah boy!!!!!

allan said...

they used to play liza for losses and frank for wins, but i think they stopped doing that. (too much liza, maybe!!!)

Amy said...

Off to bed. Thanks for holding my hands there for the last inning. Now I have to read up more on Cleveland so I am ready for FRIDAY!

GO SOX!!

tim said...

I love how their ramping up Byrd's performance to be OUTSTANDING! when it clearly wasn't. His ability to work out of the jams that he himself started was awesome and paid off, but it wasn't a clean line like Beckett's in game 1 at all.

allan said...

Is it Friday yet????????

SoSock said...

YES!!
Breath deep, and smell the Schadenfreude!
I am now "on leave" for 2 days to get some damn work done.
Hate I missed the clincher with you guys yesterday, but had a LL game at 2, then went straight to a nearby friends house to catch the last 4 innings. Got into WAY too much vino and good food, and had an absolute blast. So much so that I could hardly be upset when the MFY took the lead in their game. Had a WTF - Bring 'em on! attitude by then :)
So - bring on the TRIBE !!
We're ready !!

Jere said...

Yes, they eventually went with their usual tradition of "acting like we won when we really lost" and just started playing Frank all the time.

A seventh consecutive winter without a Yankee reign! How sweet it is!

(I was over at redsoxchick's, as she was doing a live-blog for old-times' sake and I didn't see the note that this would be a live-er earlier.)

allan said...

you must be one of them stupid stat geek nerds. put away your slide rule, poindexter, and go watch a game. ... closers close.

Benjamin said...

Torre's really reminiscing now.

At least the tabloids can't blame it on A-rod. They might have to consider whether the entire MFY offense shat the bed this series.

SoSock said...

How TRUE!

My inner Kirk trumped with - "Let them watch the Indians celebrate on THEIR PRECIOUS TURF - Phasers on KILL!"

I saw that last kick - well, those last two kicks! Amazing that he made them both. Kinda cool to see, even though I don't want much football.

allan said...

Oh yeah?

Wire service story on the Post's site:

"But they were done in by poor pitching, an insect invasion and the latest October vanishing act by Alex Rodriguez, whose bat was quiet until a solo home run in the seventh inning."

Rob said...

Redsock, I got some good schadenfreude audio for ya coming up tomorrow.
