WS 1: Red Sox 13, Rockies 1

Rockies - 010 000 000 - 1 6 0
Red Sox - 310 270 00x - 13 17 0
Josh Beckett was the shit once again (7-6-1-1-9, 93). Dustin Pedroia hit a home run to start the first inning -- the first rookie in World Series history to do so -- and J.D. Drew added a two-run double to give Boston a quick 3-0 lead.

Beckett relied almost exclusively on his fastball for the first four innings -- 39 of his first 40 pitches were heat ranging from 95 to 97. He had excellent control. He set up Todd Helton with a 12/6 curve for strike two in the second inning before getting him swinging at a fastball and his 0-2 off-speed pitch to Matt Holliday in the fourth was tapped to third.

Nine consecutive Red Sox batters reached base with two outs in the fifth -- three doubles, two singles and four walks, including three straight bases-loaded walks -- that pushed the lead from 6-1 to 13-1.

So ... Boston's last four games: 7-1, 12-2, 11-2, 13-1. Four wins by a combined score of 43-6!

And:
First team in postseason history to score 10+ runs in three straight games

13 Runs = New World Series Game 1 record

12 Runs = Largest margin of victory in World Series Game 1 (11: White Sox 1959 and Atlanta 1996)

Tied World Series record with nine extra-base hits (Pirates 1935)

I think we'll see a closer game tomorrow, and I think Colorado will win 2 out of 3 in Denver. That's what I think. Then it's back to Fenway for the end. Call me crazy, but the playing field will be level out in Denver, if not tilted toward the Rox.

I even came back from the bar a little early. It was good -- good for the nerves. I am sure the Rockies will hit at some point, but...gotta feel good about this.

I gotta agree with ya, the series definitely won't be like this the whole way through (like '04 - i don't think there was any question there)...

Redsock and L-girl - here's a crazy fucking proposition (based on Jere's ticket advice) - ROAD TRIP to Boston for game 6 and/or 7! Definitely the wine talking, however, even when not halfway into a gigantic bottle of wine, these sorts of crazy, spontaneous trips DO cross my mind!

man...watching the local colorado news...it's pretty funny. everybody they've shown (including clint hurdle and all the anchors) looks like they just came back from a funeral. of someone they liked. and then they got home and found out someone ran over their dog.

Aw,fuck... finally a thread where we talk about beer and I missed it... Oh, well, at least we won the game (WON? The Sox fucking evaporated them).

A lot of people are saying it's doom and gloom for the Red Sox because of how teams had fared after scoring 11 or more runs in Game 1. Strange people.

Not that there's anything wrong with that ....

In 2004, I was set to take the weekend off and take the bus from NYC to Boston (the $10 Chinatownbus) to hang out outside Fenway for Games 6 and 7 and sleep on the floor of someone L knew in Boston. ... The Sox swept so it never happened.

Not quite at 100, but respectable nonetheless.

I just might drive down for games 6 and 7 (clearly, if necessary)

I have a huge exam on Nov 2, but fuck it! And, it's open book. So superfuck it! If I can get tickets, that aren't like 800$ for the bleachers, then I'm so driving down.

Those strange people are known as Fox Sports commentators. Nothing strange with their attitude.

As sad as I'll be to see baseball end for the year, I want this over in four games. Good start to the series.

I know what you mean. As much as I want the Red Sox to win the World Series at Fenway Park, it means they have to lose two games, each loss feels like crap, and two losses will feel a little stressful. It was awesome in 2004 in St. Louis, but man. The fans deserve this. The way this season has gone, the best ending is at Fenway Park.

There's probably noone here to read this, but:

Gagne is fast becoming my favorite player. I mean, think about it: if he pitches, it means we have such a big lead it guarantees a win. Him pitching=guaranteed win. How is that not WS MVP worthy?

I'm reading. :)

I bet I'm not the only one who catches up on the last round of comments the next morning.

McMoron: "It's just one game"

True, but it's also 25% of a World Series title. I'm not really a glass is half stupid guy.

:-)

That's a keeper. Tim McMoron, a glass-half-stupid kinda guy.

Ok, maybe Allan will be...

You're right, Laura, you aren't the only one who scrolls through the next morning to see what else was posted overnight.

Ofer, it will take me a long, long time to trust Gagne if there is anything less than a ten run lead....

Yup, ditto.

and re: jere's ticket advice, i think it was in the game 7 thread or one of the ones thereafter - basically said he went to the game and paid face value by calling the ticket office the day of the game asking for a ticket.

I thought about heading up to Boston tonight, just to hang around the World Series atmosphere.

Well, actually I check the threads from the end of one to the start of the other. Good win, and no way do the Sox lose 2 in Colorado!

To preface, I'm from Philly and still reeling from the Patriots, Eagles game from 2005. But I'm absolutely impressed with the DOMINANCE of the Red Sox over Colorado especially when they dispatched us in three games when I've been waiting for 15 years for the Phillies to get back to play-offs!!! HURT THEM!!!! HURT THEM AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!!!!!

Hope you don't me jumping the gun here. Jumping is an appropriate word. Last night's win at Denver was a hard fought affair even though the score does not show it. I live in London and sat from 1am to 5am watching. Congratulations to the Red Sox 3 down 1 to go.

If you're interested, I posted a few pictures of the series-clinching game which I was lucky enough (read: had enough money) to attend on my blog:

Unbelievable win, and to correct the guy above me, it was their 7th World Series win. With Ellsbury, Pedroia, Beckett, Dice-K, Papelbon - they have the youth to dominate the AL for a long, long time. The curse was reversed in '04, now it's been obliterated.

And to correct the guy above me, there was no curse, ever.

They didn't win a World Series for a long time. No ghosts or goblins were needed for that, and none were needed to change it.

Danno said...

Hey L-Girl. Prove that there wasn't a curse. You're lack of belief in ghosts and goblins sounds like religious faith to me. Thanks for the correction though - we are all wiser from hearing your guidance. Does "L" stand for "Lecture"?

Hey L-Girl. Prove that there wasn't a curse.

Asking someone to prove a negative? What do you think this is -- a frickin' Yahoo board? Our standards of discourse are quite a bit higher here.

You claimed there was a curse -- prove it. ... (Shaughnessy's book doesn't count as proof.)

You're lack of belief in ghosts and goblins sounds like religious faith to me.

Sounds like common sense to me. Sounds like her thought patterns are not stuck in the 12th Century.

(And it's "your", not "you're", by the way.)

Does "L" stand for "Lecture"?

Only when someone needs some educating.

it was a good game and would red sox get a-rod?

You're fantastic!

Just a most respectful note: Dustin Pedroia became the second player in World Series history to lead off the first inning of Game 1 with a homer, joining Don Buford of the 1969 Orioles.

Additional notes on this game: This is the highest Red Sox score in franchise history in a World Series game. They set the record for runs scored AND victory margin in an opening game. The Red Sox became the first ballclub to hit 8 doubles in a Series game since 1925. Josh Beckett is the first pitcher to strike out the first four batters in a World Series game since Sandy Koufax in 1963. And, finally, Reliever Ryan Speier was the first pitcher to ever walk 3 batters with bases loaded in a Series game.

That's great baseball!
