Amy, did you go back to last night's thread and get the Gumball explanation?
For anyone who is interested, I would like to correct a geographical error: Toronto is not right near Detroit. The Canadian city opposite Detroit is Windsor.
Toronto is not far from Buffalo, NY and is across Lake Ontario from Rochester, NY.
Wouldn't want anyone to get lost.
I'm watching the game now for the first time, and even though I know what happens, I still am angered by how long it took to get Papelbon in there.

rainy? how rainy?
Looks like the heavy stuff is moving out, but some rain is lingering all night. I'd say it's not looking good.
Cafardo says "on and off".
A SoSHer posted this at 1:38 PM:
"A tornado watch is in effect until 5 PM for the metropolitan areas of Washington DC and Baltimore ... The remnants of the thunderstorm complex will move across metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington DC before noon ... Additional severe storms are expected to develop ahead of the cold front later this afternoon and affect the area through 5 PM. Severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing wind gusts of 60 mph or greater and large hail. Tornadoes are also possible especially along and east of the Interstate 95 corridor."
*********
When I hear newer info, I will post.
Oop. Also in that SOSH post:
"Tonight: Occasional showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 PM. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds.
Low around 68. West wind between 9 and 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."
Joe: You watching the game at a Red Sox bar?
Nope. Got home this afternoon - it was a short trip.
I am not totally against a rainout. Turns out the overnight person who comes in at 8 PM is not coming in, so after 8 PM, it is only me in here. The likelihood of not being bothered during the game is slim.
Playing tomorrow afternoon -- when I have two co-workers -- and making tonight's game up later in the year would be fine too.
Might help the Sox rotation issues too.
I don't think doubleheaders help the pitching situation, but moving the game back to later in the year would
Joe, how was NYC???
I mean, besides those pics.
Globe Notes:
June 5 game with Tampa (next Thursday) is now at 6 PM and not 7 PM.
Clay Buchholz off DL and optioned to Pawtucket.
T'was good. We did about as much touristy stuff as is humanly possible to do in just one day. Off the top of my head, stops included:
-Grand Central Station
-The UN (did a tour)
-some Italian restaurant (I think Michael's Cafe) near the UN that served a mean pepperoni-and-sausage pizza
-Paley Center (Museum of TV & Radio), saw a reel of iconic commercials from the 50s and 60s, an episode of All in the Family, and a documentary about major breaking news events narrated by Walter Cronkite
-Strolled through Central Park - saw the zoo, but it was closed
-A few fancy stores on 5th avenue (until I got nauseous)
-The official NHL + NBA stores
-FAO Schwartz
-NBC studios
-Times sq. including the M&Ms store... yum...
-went into the ESPN Zone, found out that they were doing a $10 per person per hour minimum, so bailed
-dinner at Planet Hollywood
It was a fun time overall, although Amanda really gets uncomfortable with huge crowds bumping into her (a little bit of claustrophobia I think) so Friday Night at Times Sq. became a bit of an ordeal.
My feet hurt from all the walking - that's the way I like it, though. :)
It's a great walking city, tired feet means you did it right. :)
I'm glad you went to Grand Central (that's Terminal, not Station) amid all that other tourist-corporate stuff. It's one of the world's great public spaces.
Glad you had fun.
Maybe next time you can save Amanda some claustrophobia and get out of midtown altogether. Go downtown or the Upper West Side.
Dear Red Sox and Orioles,
I leave work at 10. Please be finished playing by then.
Signed,
Stuck At Work With MLB Audio
Yeah, we're definitely going to mix it up next time, but since it was our first time in NYC as adults it was good to do all the touristy stuff.
Grand Central Terminal... my bad. :)
It really is beautiful, I loved it. I love transportation hubs - airports, train stations, etc. - they get me all excited and thinking about all the places I want to visit.
L, you better hope the game starts at 7
Yeah, we're definitely going to mix it up next time, but since it was our first time in NYC as adults it was good to do all the touristy stuff.
I wouldn't want it any other way. :)
I always do that my first time in a city. Later visits are more for exploring. I would have chosen different tourist stuff, but I'm not you!
Grand Central Terminal... my bad. :)
You're in good company there. I'm an irritating New Yorker with that constant correction.
It really is beautiful, I loved it. I love transportation hubs - airports, train stations, etc. - they get me all excited and thinking about all the places I want to visit.
ME TOO!!!
Plus it's just such a beautiful building.
L, you better hope the game starts at 7
Or maybe there'll be a long rain delay right as I'm on my way home?
I have not seen hide nor hair of anyone today. They better not swing by with work in the next 2 minutes.
CWS 00
TBR 00
i would like jon lester to pitch many innings.
Ask him nicely and maybe he will.
habemus baseballum
work ---- unbelievable.
it's not much, but shit.
wow. nice timing on that work. bummer!
what timing. seems like it never fails.
You cannot catch him! Even if he's only *thinking* about running, you cannot catch him!!
can't be stopped
there he goes again!
no way in hell he swung at that.
jere's at this game, right?
last night the baltimore station was showing the most SB by a red sox player in a season - and comparing that to lbj.
they neglected to mention that those were total seasons. lbj's third on the list and it's not even june.
DAMNIT. I was sort of half paying attention reading something , and Manny gave it a jolt, and... damn.
i think jere is there for the whole series, but i'm not positive. maybe his blog says.
jere - pretty sure he is.
damn, radio totally truped me.
espn sez he k'd looking? not sure that was a strike either.
i'd rather see manny hit it at fenway
I was debating on whether to be selfish or not. I've got to go out in a few minutes to do a DJ gig tonight. I was hoping manny wouldn't hit 500 tonight. however....jere is there. I hope he rips 500. 501. and 502. and LBJ breaks remy's record.
they neglected to mention that those were total seasons. lbj's third on the list and it's not even june.
i do not understand (/thorne)
No matter what you hope, you have no control over it. So you might as well hope what you want.
they neglected to mention that those were total seasons. lbj's third on the list and it's not even june.
i do not understand (/thorne)
And he's only a few SBs away from breaking the team record.
what?! no control? crap. I am merely floating in the void, in a soupy substance of lack.
Nonetheless, my hoping stands.
I thought fans watching at home could will positive results by the power of positive energy? ;-)
what?! no control? crap. I am merely floating in the void, in a soupy substance of lack.
you and the rest of us
Nonetheless, my hoping stands.
as well it should. it's all you got.
I thought fans watching at home could will positive results by the power of positive energy? ;-)
You'll have to ask Amy about that. I'm a hardcore atheist. I don't believe in fairy dust. :)
I don't believe in a supreme being, but I DO believe in fairydust. It's one of those Cafeteria Catholic things.
i thought fans watching at home could will positive results by the power of positive energy? ;-)
fat billy is still alive and has a home and more than $2 to his name .. so i guess not.
nice work, sid! keep it going.
It's one of those Cafeteria Catholic things.
That's the only way most people can choke down religion - in the Convenient For Me Cafeteria.
fat billy is still alive and has a home and more than $2 to his name .. so i guess not.
that isn't positive energy you're working on.
hey, tek gets a hit!
do not adjust your set, etc. etc.
That's the only way most people can choke down religion - in the Convenient For Me Cafeteria.
Read "The Transformation of American Religion" by Alan Wolfe (one of my professors!).
the massive red sox fan presence never gets old
what's more positive than clemens homeless and broke?
Pretty sure Wolfe used to teach at Penn. I think that's where he did his PhD.
He's a really nice guy and his seminar was amazing. He is quite confrontational when speaking in public and in his books, but that's not necessarily a bad thing
Alright. I'm outta here.
Use your wills to ... well feel like you're doing something.
have fun!
That's cool.
I just did a quick Google, and I see that he did teach at Penn. I used to read him in the New Republic and such. You can tell by this title that I wouldn't see eye to eye with him.
"Return to Greatness: How America Lost Its Sense of Purpose and What it Needs to Do to Recover It"
Bye Nick - have fun!
haha yes, I just finished that book last week and I thought that you would dislike it.
I wasn't a big fan of it either, not because I oppose American greatness, but because I oppose a lot of the ways he thinks a nation goes about being 'great.'
Lots of excellent attacks against Bushco, which never get old
because I oppose a lot of the ways he thinks a nation goes about being 'great.'
Yes, that would be my issue, too. If the US wants to start being great, I'll be all for it.
Lots of excellent attacks against Bushco, which never get old
Indeed.
K
He does call for universal health care, reformed social security, and a 'progressive' form of environmentalism, but he's also a big fan of global policing.
fuck. lame way to give up a run.
So he's half right.
Lots of excellent attacks against Bushco
i.e., stating facts
Shit, I read Joe's last comment, I was like, what run, who...? Pitch hadn't even been thrown yet where I am.
I always forget to refresh less frequently when I'm at work.
Which is better than being not right at all :).
He's a good writer, too, although reading him for too long will give you a headache -- tons of citations, historical references, etc.
Plus he usually makes up a few terms in the preface or chapter 1 and continues using them throughout the book, and it can get confusing keeping them all straight.
well, that's a more traditional way to give up a run.
i.e., stating facts
Right. That's one of my other favorite things about Wolfe (and others), 'no, seriously, you can't call me biased, it's a freakin' fact.'
stating facts, yes.
damn, 2-0!
i'm in the middle of "holding the bully's coat" by canadian columnist/historian linda mcquaig- a critique of canada's policies in relation to the us.
NICE.
I'm currently reading "The Working Poor: Invisible in America" which was really big a few years ago, but I never got around to reading it.
I interrupted my reading of that with a second reading of "Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O'Reilly," which is great for comic relief.
one weekend i had an audio broadcast w/o commercials. it was so wonderful.
haven't seen it since.
David K Shipler! That's an excellent book. I've read it too.
doesn't matter when books come out. read them when you read them.
I see that book is an international organization!
It's a hilarious international organization. Those guys are great. They were laughing at FOX News before it became fashionable to do so
a fuck yeah dong! thanks dusty!!
dong!
ok papi, your turn
that was fast
did i call that or did i call that?????
you called it
i swear i typed that before he was even in the batter's box. delay here.
ok. thanks. :)
had to get some credit there.
it was all you, willing it over the fence
yes, with my fairydust
poor allan has work and his computer crashed.
WTF manny/lugo
what happened there?
Looks like they just got crossed up.
"Red Sox move Thu. game from 7:05 to 6:05 to allow fans to enjoy the NBA finals"
Classy move. Goes to show why the Red Sox have such an incredible organization.
early game - i like that.
Me too!
Another error for Millahh
Will the FKRs ever lose again?
no
Manny! ?#$!@#@#$
Shoulda caught that one. He backed off at the end.
Twins tie it at 3-3.
i'm still here in case anyone is wondering.
i am back watching now.
No one could have foreseen that he'd steal.
come on dusty mcdust
ah, that looked pretty good for a second. dayum
No one could have foreseen that he'd steal.
:>)
HAHAHA SAFE AGAIN
6 PM game -- knock off the FRs and we can still sit out in the daylight!
Bad play there. Throw was a bit off line, and Mora was way off te bag
bury remy's record! bury it!!!!!!!
he's out of control
Big cut 'n a miss
bah.
6 PM game -- knock off the FRs and we can still sit out in the daylight!
sounds good to me! i want games to start at 5. we can eat dinner and watch, then sit outside all evening.
move west. ;)
CBS:
Red Sox 3rd
Ramirez grounded out to left.
***
WTF? Did the LF throw him out at first?
Crap.
He lined out to deep left.
aardsma up
anyone listening on the radio? dave o'b is quoting (badly - but still) millar's "don't let us win tonight".
that is just the coolest thing to hear.
dave o'b also noting that jeter said something similar, about not liking how the pitching lines up, not counting the sox out.
millar's "don't let us win tonight".
every schoolkid in new england should have that memorized.
lester .....
pc: 9-22-22 20-26?so far
yes, i was unimpressed with dave stumbling over it. but it was still great, because it made me think of... everything. :)
hernandez SASAHE!
it has to be one of top 3 red sox quotes of all-time. could it be #1?
what are some of the others?
i'm partial to "you make your own destination", but i'm not sure that's one of the all-timers.
"Don't let us win tonight. This is a big game. They've got to win because if we win, we've got Pedro coming back today and then Schilling will pitch Game 6 and then you can take that fraud stuff and put it to bed. Don't let the Sox win this game."
Just cutting and pasting gives me goosebumps!
Imagine being on the brink of elimination, and he says they've got to win.
Everyone was talking about how loose the team was, how relaxed.
Unlike all the fans!!!
And that is why Kevin Millar should never be booed by any Red Sox fan ever.
Foulke is firmly in that never-boo category, too.
remys been reading the blog! just called trembley schatner!
past a diving jeter!
BALK!
no one should ever, ever boo any of the 25. and i mean that. that includes ALL of them. even you-know-who.
be tangible, capt.
tangible.
Nix, they often mention that he looks like Shatner.
who you-know-who?
Tangibility delivered.
damon
I've never heard remy mention it...
that's it!!!
tek again??? wow!
The one roaming LF for the MFYs? That one?
another tie game. Ya'll up for 13 innings?
i've heard them laughing about it. in between bong hits.
oh yeah - i was trying to think of everyone -- blanked him right out! heh.
i've heard them laughing about it. in between bong hits.
Every at bat is a chance for redemption for Lugo.
13?
pfft. if we're having extras, i want EXTRAS!
...three score sheet? four?!?!
let's just clobber them in 9
a bunt does not equal redemption.
oooh, cobbler
FUCKING LUGO.
peach cobbler! with those peaches from oregon!
oregon, where lbj is from!
it's all coming together...
lugo
sigh
actually, i have missed a few innings and i am at work. so we should win 5-3 in 9.
i'll ask for the 27+ innings marathon when i am watching at home.
everybody threw a lot of pitches last night
jeemer - 24
mdc - 27
hansen - 22
timlin - 21
then
lopez - 9
bot - 10
can aaaaaaaaaardsma go 2-3?
the weary pen is another reason to not want extras.
I like the Tampa Bay pitching line. They had a pitcher for each out in the ninth...
Jacoby has the league lead in steals...
I wonder if Ichiro will catch him.
fucking molina puts the yanks ahead, 4-3.
Is it just me looking through oriole goggles, or is our bullpen doing pretty ok?
6-3 yanks, motherfuckers
Nice wheels.
STEAL HOME!
he's a fucking blur going by second base!
O my gosh. That man is invincible!
THAT'S MY BOY!!!
Dave O'B used the word "blur". That was one of our possible nicknames for him.
GOD I LOVE THAT KID
unlikely to steal any bases this inning - boo.
If Moises Alou can do it, why can't he?
unlikely to steal any bases this inning
that was my first thought when he got the triple.
doesn't look like this game will be over before i leave work.
Why doesn't Tito pinch run Papelbon for Ellsbury here? 3-3's a save situation. What's he saving him for?
come on papi
flo v jamie walker = dy-no-mite!
Why doesn't Tito pinch run Papelbon for Ellsbury here? 3-3's a save situation. What's he saving him for?
LOL
I don't understand it, but it's funny.
Rays won, I assume?
SAC FLY
oh no...
SAFE
Yay.
i called his first dong, i could try it again...?
ok papi, your turn!
oh great, everyone already knew. i'm 5 minutes behind.
Brad Chadford! Bring it on!
Scott Kazmir is an animal.
