Padres 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff's Friday night was not so good.

laura k said...

Amy, did you go back to last night's thread and get the Gumball explanation?

For anyone who is interested, I would like to correct a geographical error: Toronto is not right near Detroit. The Canadian city opposite Detroit is Windsor.

Toronto is not far from Buffalo, NY and is across Lake Ontario from Rochester, NY.

Wouldn't want anyone to get lost.

Joe Grav said...

I'm watching the game now for the first time, and even though I know what happens, I still am angered by how long it took to get Papelbon in there.

Joe Grav said...

Looks like the heavy stuff is moving out, but some rain is lingering all night. I'd say it's not looking good.

allan said...

Cafardo says "on and off".

A SoSHer posted this at 1:38 PM:

"A tornado watch is in effect until 5 PM for the metropolitan areas of Washington DC and Baltimore ... The remnants of the thunderstorm complex will move across metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington DC before noon ... Additional severe storms are expected to develop ahead of the cold front later this afternoon and affect the area through 5 PM. Severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing wind gusts of 60 mph or greater and large hail. Tornadoes are also possible especially along and east of the Interstate 95 corridor."

*********

When I hear newer info, I will post.

allan said...

Oop. Also in that SOSH post:
"Tonight: Occasional showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 PM. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds.
Low around 68. West wind between 9 and 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."

Joe: You watching the game at a Red Sox bar?

Joe Grav said...

Nope. Got home this afternoon - it was a short trip.

allan said...

I am not totally against a rainout. Turns out the overnight person who comes in at 8 PM is not coming in, so after 8 PM, it is only me in here. The likelihood of not being bothered during the game is slim.

Playing tomorrow afternoon -- when I have two co-workers -- and making tonight's game up later in the year would be fine too.

Might help the Sox rotation issues too.

Joe Grav said...

I don't think doubleheaders help the pitching situation, but moving the game back to later in the year would

laura k said...

Joe, how was NYC???

laura k said...

I mean, besides those pics.

Globe Notes:

T'was good. We did about as much touristy stuff as is humanly possible to do in just one day. Off the top of my head, stops included:

-Grand Central Station
-The UN (did a tour)
-some Italian restaurant (I think Michael's Cafe) near the UN that served a mean pepperoni-and-sausage pizza
-Paley Center (Museum of TV & Radio), saw a reel of iconic commercials from the 50s and 60s, an episode of All in the Family, and a documentary about major breaking news events narrated by Walter Cronkite
-Strolled through Central Park - saw the zoo, but it was closed
-A few fancy stores on 5th avenue (until I got nauseous)
-The official NHL + NBA stores
-FAO Schwartz
-NBC studios
-Times sq. including the M&Ms store... yum...
-went into the ESPN Zone, found out that they were doing a $10 per person per hour minimum, so bailed
-dinner at Planet Hollywood

It was a fun time overall, although Amanda really gets uncomfortable with huge crowds bumping into her (a little bit of claustrophobia I think) so Friday Night at Times Sq. became a bit of an ordeal.

My feet hurt from all the walking - that's the way I like it, though. :)

laura k said...

It's a great walking city, tired feet means you did it right. :)

I'm glad you went to Grand Central (that's Terminal, not Station) amid all that other tourist-corporate stuff. It's one of the world's great public spaces.

Glad you had fun.

Maybe next time you can save Amanda some claustrophobia and get out of midtown altogether. Go downtown or the Upper West Side.

laura k said...

Dear Red Sox and Orioles,

I leave work at 10. Please be finished playing by then.

Joe Grav said...

Yeah, we're definitely going to mix it up next time, but since it was our first time in NYC as adults it was good to do all the touristy stuff.

Grand Central Terminal... my bad. :)

It really is beautiful, I loved it. I love transportation hubs - airports, train stations, etc. - they get me all excited and thinking about all the places I want to visit.

Joe Grav said...

L, you better hope the game starts at 7

laura k said...

Yeah, we're definitely going to mix it up next time, but since it was our first time in NYC as adults it was good to do all the touristy stuff.

I wouldn't want it any other way. :)

I always do that my first time in a city. Later visits are more for exploring. I would have chosen different tourist stuff, but I'm not you!

Grand Central Terminal... my bad. :)

You're in good company there. I'm an irritating New Yorker with that constant correction.

It really is beautiful, I loved it. I love transportation hubs - airports, train stations, etc. - they get me all excited and thinking about all the places I want to visit.

ME TOO!!!

Plus it's just such a beautiful building.

laura k said...

Or maybe there'll be a long rain delay right as I'm on my way home?

no way in hell he swung at that.

nick said...

jere's at this game, right?

laura k said...

last night the baltimore station was showing the most SB by a red sox player in a season - and comparing that to lbj.

they neglected to mention that those were total seasons. lbj's third on the list and it's not even june.

Joe Grav said...

DAMNIT. I was sort of half paying attention reading something , and Manny gave it a jolt, and... damn.

laura k said...

i think jere is there for the whole series, but i'm not positive. maybe his blog says.

allan said...

jere - pretty sure he is.

laura k said...

damn, radio totally truped me.

allan said...

espn sez he k'd looking? not sure that was a strike either.

nixon33 said...

i'd rather see manny hit it at fenway

nick said...

I was debating on whether to be selfish or not. I've got to go out in a few minutes to do a DJ gig tonight. I was hoping manny wouldn't hit 500 tonight. however....jere is there. I hope he rips 500. 501. and 502. and LBJ breaks remy's record.

allan said...

they neglected to mention that those were total seasons. lbj's third on the list and it's not even june.

i do not understand (/thorne)

laura k said...

No matter what you hope, you have no control over it. So you might as well hope what you want.

laura k said...

they neglected to mention that those were total seasons. lbj's third on the list and it's not even june.

And he's only a few SBs away from breaking the team record.

nick said...

You'll have to ask Amy about that. I'm a hardcore atheist. I don't believe in fairy dust. :)

Joe Grav said...

I don't believe in a supreme being, but I DO believe in fairydust. It's one of those Cafeteria Catholic things.

nice work, sid! keep it going.

Read "The Transformation of American Religion" by Alan Wolfe (one of my professors!).

Joe Grav said...

the massive red sox fan presence never gets old

allan said...

what's more positive than clemens homeless and broke?

laura k said...

Pretty sure Wolfe used to teach at Penn. I think that's where he did his PhD.

Joe Grav said...

He's a really nice guy and his seminar was amazing. He is quite confrontational when speaking in public and in his books, but that's not necessarily a bad thing

nick said...

Alright. I'm outta here.

Use your wills to ... well feel like you're doing something.

have fun!

laura k said...

That's cool.

I just did a quick Google, and I see that he did teach at Penn. I used to read him in the New Republic and such. You can tell by this title that I wouldn't see eye to eye with him.

"Return to Greatness: How America Lost Its Sense of Purpose and What it Needs to Do to Recover It"

laura k said...

Bye Nick - have fun!

Joe Grav said...

haha yes, I just finished that book last week and I thought that you would dislike it.

I wasn't a big fan of it either, not because I oppose American greatness, but because I oppose a lot of the ways he thinks a nation goes about being 'great.'

Lots of excellent attacks against Bushco, which never get old

laura k said...

because I oppose a lot of the ways he thinks a nation goes about being 'great.'

Yes, that would be my issue, too. If the US wants to start being great, I'll be all for it.

Lots of excellent attacks against Bushco, which never get old

Indeed.

Joe Grav said...

K

Joe Grav said...

He does call for universal health care, reformed social security, and a 'progressive' form of environmentalism, but he's also a big fan of global policing.

Joe Grav said...

fuck. lame way to give up a run.

laura k said...

So he's half right.

allan said...

Lots of excellent attacks against Bushco

i.e., stating facts

laura k said...

Shit, I read Joe's last comment, I was like, what run, who...? Pitch hadn't even been thrown yet where I am.

laura k said...

I always forget to refresh less frequently when I'm at work.

Joe Grav said...

Which is better than being not right at all :).

He's a good writer, too, although reading him for too long will give you a headache -- tons of citations, historical references, etc.

Plus he usually makes up a few terms in the preface or chapter 1 and continues using them throughout the book, and it can get confusing keeping them all straight.

Joe Grav said...

well, that's a more traditional way to give up a run.

Joe Grav said...

i.e., stating facts

Right. That's one of my other favorite things about Wolfe (and others), 'no, seriously, you can't call me biased, it's a freakin' fact.'

laura k said...

stating facts, yes.

damn, 2-0!

laura k said...

i'm in the middle of "holding the bully's coat" by canadian columnist/historian linda mcquaig- a critique of canada's policies in relation to the us.

Joe Grav said...

NICE.

Joe Grav said...

I'm currently reading "The Working Poor: Invisible in America" which was really big a few years ago, but I never got around to reading it.

I interrupted my reading of that with a second reading of "Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O'Reilly," which is great for comic relief.

laura k said...

David K Shipler! That's an excellent book. I've read it too.

anyone listening on the radio? dave o'b is quoting (badly - but still) millar's "don't let us win tonight".

that is just the coolest thing to hear.

dave o'b also noting that jeter said something similar, about not liking how the pitching lines up, not counting the sox out.

allan said...

millar's "don't let us win tonight".

every schoolkid in new england should have that memorized.

laura k said...

yes, i was unimpressed with dave stumbling over it. but it was still great, because it made me think of... everything. :)

allan said...

hernandez SASAHE!

allan said...

it has to be one of top 3 red sox quotes of all-time. could it be #1?

laura k said...

what are some of the others?

i'm partial to "you make your own destination", but i'm not sure that's one of the all-timers.

allan said...

"Don't let us win tonight. This is a big game. They've got to win because if we win, we've got Pedro coming back today and then Schilling will pitch Game 6 and then you can take that fraud stuff and put it to bed. Don't let the Sox win this game."

Just cutting and pasting gives me goosebumps!

laura k said...

Imagine being on the brink of elimination, and he says they've got to win.

Everyone was talking about how loose the team was, how relaxed.

Unlike all the fans!!!

allan said...

And that is why Kevin Millar should never be booed by any Red Sox fan ever.

Foulke is firmly in that never-boo category, too.

nixon33 said...
