G88: Red Sox 7, Yankees 0

Red Sox - 220 110 010 - 7 11 0
Yankees - 000 000 000 - 0 5 1
Lester: 9-5-0-2-8, 105.

And everyone in the lineup added a little bit:

Ellsbury: 2-run double in 2nd
Pedroia: single, run in 1st
Drew: single in 1st, double and run in 5th
Ramirez: single, walk, run
Lowell: RBI single in 1st, sac fly in 5th
Youkilis: double in 5th, single and run in 8th
Crisp: single and run in 2nd, single, SB and run in 4th, walk in 8th
Varitek: walk and run in 2nd, RBI single in 8th
Lugo: sac fly in 4th

Moss: stood in RF for 9th inning; did not make an error!

Also, Drew and Ococ made nice catches in the outfield. And the infield turned three double plays (543, 543, 643).

We are 3 GB.

They are 8 GB.

***

Jon Lester (3.48, 123 ERA+) / Andy Pettitte (3.98, 101 ERA+)

Jeff Goldberg, Courant:
The last time the Red Sox and Yankees played each other in the second half of the season with neither team in first place was 1997 and the Rays didn't even exist.
But the Red Sox (having lost five of their last six games) are now 3½ games out in second place, while the third-place Yankees are 7½ GB.

Lester makes his first career start at Yankee Stadium and only his second appearance ever against the Yankees. The first was on August 18, 2006: 3.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R; New York won the game 14-11).

Tampa Bay, 14-4 in their last 18 games, is off tonight.

so i sold my REALLY BAD seats i won from WFAN for twice their face value, bought BETTER seats for sunday night with the Cunt on the mound, and have extra scratch to play with at the toilet!
ive been to the toilet a couple of times, but have never gone to monument park. whats the deal with it? do you have to pay to get in? i'd like to go this time in case its my last chance.

laura k said...

Nix, very cool!

You don't have to pay extra to get into Monument Park, but there is always a hugely long line, and it's got to be even huger this year.

It is completely underwhelming. And I say that as someone who loved Yankee Stadium and loved that team with all my heart.

I can't imagine that it would ever be worth it to fight the crowds to go to Monument Park, especially for someone who calls the place The Toilet.

Where are your new seats?

nixon33 said...

thanks l-girl.
yeah i figured as much, but i might give it a shot, as i do appreciate baseball history. i was thinking of going really early and see what happens.
my seats i won were Tier 21 row U....
my new seats aren't THAT much: Tier Box MVP Row F.
first base side. thats good enough for me...

laura k said...

That's much better.

I love baseball history but I still thought Monument Park was pretty crappy. But since you've never been, and it's the last year, blah blah blah...

I'm so glad I said my goodbyes to that place. It will be REALLY strange that there will be two ballparks in NYC that we've never been to! I imagine that eventually we'll time a family visit with both teams being home. And I'll go to Yankee Stadium as a Red Sox fan.

Wow.

Enjoy the game tonight, everyone. We will be out with our kids (two Red Sox fans, one Mets fan, one Yankee fan, and one daughter who couldn't care less), but there is a TV in the restaurant bar, so hopefully Maddy (the Sox fan daughter) and I can give Harvey some razzing.

Tek is still one spot too high in the order (some might say two). Can we get the 12-year-old Jason from Amy's avatar and have him bat instead? Pretty sure he would not do worse.

allan said...

Coming off the Rays series, this doesn't feel as tense as it might have two years ago. I guess that's what happens when you are playing a .500 team fighting to stay out of fourth place.

But it'll still be sweet to pound the MFY in front of their fans and ruin Porgie's B-day tomorrow. (And remember: Hankee has vowed to not talk about the Sox for the rest of the season.)

Let Sid work his magic tonight -- we'll be 3 back and they will be 8.

allan said...

And now ... off to grill some steaks!

Zenslinger said...

Someone came in the Bar the other day with some tickets for this weekend at Yankee Stadium. The face price on them was $180. He said they were up 20 rows on the first base line.

Amy said...

I think getting a 12 year old version of Tek sounds quite adorable, though perhaps we would be better off with the 22 year old version. Even the 32 year old version.

Poor Tek....

nixon33 said...

poor tek? at least for him he's not trot.
he's prolly gonna get cut from the mets soon

GO RED SOX! said...

Have fun Nixon. By any chance can you pitch an inning or two, play short or catch? We might be able to use you tonight lol. GO SOX!

allan said...

Time to kick some ass.

Patrick said...

MMMMMMM, steaks! Are they high, by chance? Nevermind.

The weather is crazy this year in New England. It's almost tropical, in that we get a quick, strong thunder shower every 12-16 hours or so.

I was selling raw milk at the farmers market and it didn't start raining until we were all packed up and driving away. Very cool.

allan said...

organic steaks, actually. green beans, salad and red wine, with pups outside and a nice warm evening.

quite nice. but now it's inside.

allan said...

NESN!!!!

Thank you, non-existent cable baseball gods!

laura k said...

organic steaks, actually

Even better than organic: grass-fed and farm raised. And dee-licious.

These YS games are always a little strange for me. But they get a bit less strange every year.

I tried to go to Monument Park once, and like L said, the line was so long, it closed before we got in. Oh well... you can see the same shit from the left field bleachers. Kinda.

allan said...

i still have the ny post from the mid-90s with the front page story showing that almost every single monument sign had at least one spelling or other typo on it.

laura k said...

there goes the no hitter!

Jere said...

base hit FY.

i should also mention that time I tried to go to Mon. Park, it was probably the late 90s-ish. So yeah, prob. much worse now.

base hit Drew. Sweeeet.

Joe Grav said...

I'm in beautiful Keene, NH tonight so I will be turning to y'all for some Sox updates

allan said...

soooooo glad to have nesn tonight. at work, i am usually on mute, so i don't care as much.

but a day without kay is a wonderful day.

allan said...

NICE THROW JETES!!!!!!!

Jere said...

you NEVER see that. even then, it didn't happen, because it NEVER happens.

Patrick said...

Speaking of bullpen problems, the Brewers had three pitchers pitch in the bottom of the ninth, and none of them recorded an out.

I feel for them.

laura k said...

Keene figures into some of Russell Banks' novels.

laura k said...

Thanks Noodle!

Jere said...

thunder and lightning in Boston right now. As there is literally every day now.

Nice throw, Damon!!!!!! 2-0

laura k said...

We're not having any problem with Pettitte tonight.

allan said...

manny ran and i said uh-ohj but forgot it was duh noodle out there.

laura k said...

We get a ton of lightning and thunder too.

Patrick said...

I've mentioned this before, but if you are young and in the Keene area, there is a lot of fun to be had, involving kegs and basements and music.

laura k said...

The sad thing is you can't say that about every place on earth. There should always be kegs and music and young people having fun.

laura k said...

2-0 - nice!

Jere said...

My one Red Sox fan friend growing up went to Franklin Pierce. When I would visit, he'd take me to Keene.

Patrick said...

I'm making hamburger helper with organic meat and milk. Kind of twisted.

laura k said...

Jere, how old were you for your first game at Fenway? I'm sure I should know this, but I can't recall.

Joe Grav said...

I like Keene. My favorite stop in the NECBL express thus far however is Montpelier, VT

allan said...

The Red Sox Foundation should do more for "Kegs N' Kids".

laura k said...

I'm making hamburger helper with organic meat and milk. Kind of twisted.

An interesting combo! But it's got to be better for you than making it with all the antibiotic-laced milk and meat.

Patrick said...

I had miller highlife from a keg in Keene. I was amazed at how good it tasted. Tap makes the difference.

Patrick said...

Montpelier is up where my Dad lives. He's outside of St. Johnsbury.

laura k said...

Montpelier, famous for being the only state capital without a McDonald's. Yay Vermont.

Jere said...

L: Remember, Yankee Stadium was much closer to us, so my first game was Sox-Yanks in The Bronx in '79, when I was 3. (upper deck, behind home plate) I got to Fenway a few years later--though I have a Yaz '79 pennant which it seems only could've come from Fenway, so there may have been an earlier trip whose details remain uncovered....

allan said...

Fucking Dice.

Zenslinger said...

I use Yahoo's StatTracker to keep track of my fantasy team and for a bird's eye on games in general. Every time an inning ends, over the inning summary, you get an annoying image of Jeter doing a fist pump.

For a while it has been in the back of my mind to do a screenshot of Jeter over a message showing that he made a run-surrendering error. So today I got my wish before hitting the road for Lake Tahoe.

I hope the threads are juicy and the Sox victorious.

Best to all.

Patrick said...

Strikes please!

laura k said...

Remember, Yankee Stadium was much closer to us

That's why I asked. :)

Joe Grav said...

The "driving to Vermont" part wasn't 'very fun, but once I got there... beautiful scenery, great ballpark

NECBL: You gotta get down to my lovely home area of Danbury! The "Danbury Westerners." The field is, like, some field I always used to play on, with no "stands."

Joe Grav said...

Because it was like a 4+ hour ride

nixon33 said...

didnt realize we had the yankee umpiring crew tonight

Jere said...

ok, pizza's here. Dungeon for Lester for walking the first two....

Joe Grav said...

I missed the Danbury game, Jere. I'm told I didn't miss much.

nixon33 said...

fucking lugo

andy said...

I see there will be some home field advantage calls today.

laura k said...

Heh. I don't consider it a long drive until it passes 7 or 8 hours. We do 4 or 5 without blinking.

Joe Grav said...

I'm spending the 4th in Holyoke, which takes the grand prize for cruddy NECBL parks. Most of them have been really, really nice, though.

andy said...

So far there have been 2. The strike vs ball call was fine by itself but combined now with the bad call at first. It seems that umps usually call in favor of the defense on first base outs but that looked to be favored too much to the runner especially when he was out.

Patrick said...

89 though Vermont is one of the most beautiful interstate drives in the country. It almost feels like a country road (but not quite).

laura k said...

Last year we did Rt 7 down the whole state, for the first time for either of us. It was absolutely gorgeous - like a postcard of New England.

allan said...

slappy and hgh down by way of the sid K!!

nixon33 said...

LESTER!

Joe Grav said...

Atta boy Lester.

Patrick said...

I don't like Giambi, but I really dig the stache. It's so gross it's cool.

laura k said...

16 days in Newfoundland, we put on 3,000 kilometers on the car. 1865 miles.

andy said...

Lester just made love to the home plate ump. so the rest of the game should go well. How can you deny the cute boy when he comes up and snuggles you?

andy said...

Not complaining but why the modding during the game?

laura k said...

When Giambi came to the Yankees,

HEIDI SIGHTING OMG

and he had to cut his hair and shave, they told me he could still have a mustache. He said, "A mustache? What am I, 40 years old?" He offended a lot of people.

Now look at him!

Patrick said...

A semi driver told me the road through Newfoundland is the longest through any Canadian province. Makes sense.

andy said...

Coco is back with a vengeance.

laura k said...

Modding b/c we have to.

andy said...

Giambi looks like a mario brother

andy said...

you have idiots today? Surely you can't mean me.

laura k said...

A semi driver told me the road through Newfoundland is the longest through any Canadian province.

How can that be? Ontario is like 4 times as big as Nfld.

Ontario is huge - almost as big as Alaska.

laura k said...

Andy, not you or anyone posting here. Let's not talk about it, ok? Thanks.

allan said...

BBBB to Tek!!!

Patrick said...

But man, I love the way there is always an inlet of water near you in NFLD and the way the hills coming out of the water are so small and round and green.

andy said...

Tek CANNOT DH ever. I can't believe the yankees announcer said that.

andy said...

I will be back then if something exciting happens.

Patrick said...

He was talking about the trans Canada road, which only goes through horizontally (unless you look at the earth side ways, in that case vertically).

allan said...

if your comments appear, you are not a problem. it's that simple.

laura k said...

There is so much water! Everywhere you drive - bays, inlets, creeks, streams, ponds - and of course the coast.

Hey Patrick, I don't know if you had a chance to read any of my posts, but I blogged my travel journal from Nfld. You might be interested, since you know it so well.

Joe Grav said...

Have n't the Yankees been watching Varitek? Just throw it over the plate.

Hey I'm not complaining.

laura k said...

4-0, we are cooking!!!!

Joe Grav said...

JACOBY! Yeahh

laura k said...

Oh yeah, the Trans-Canada - very long in Nfld. And beautiful! We had incredibly beautiful drives.

allan said...

andy's dad forgot to send him some hgh via fedex.

4-0

laura k said...

crap!!!!

Joe Grav said...

Yahoo got really confusedo n the LBJ CS, wahat happened?

nixon33 said...

pedro gets any sort of hit , he scores EASILY WITH HIS SPEED!
jesus christ...guys dont too much.

laura k said...

No need to show off Lyndon, we love you already, just do your thing and don't do extra crazy things, ok??

allan said...

lbj on second, semi-took off for third, and pettitte spun around and easily picked him off 1-5-4-1. lyndon = too anxious to go.

Patrick said...

I love when they open the inning with some laid back gangster rap tune on WRKO. Pretty funny.

allan said...

lester is 4/27 on his way to a second career no-hitter!

Joe Grav said...

Ah, Poo, the Swamp Bats are all over us tonight... taking full advantage of the ~330 power alley in right center field. Wow

Joe Grav said...

Posada channeling Varitek apparently

allan said...

5/27

allan said...

6/27

Patrick said...

I didn't realize how much I like Coco until he was gone. I'm very glad to see him back. Screw his ego, we need him on our bench.

allan said...

wow

6 pitches to tek, 6 balls

laura k said...

Great pic, Joe! It looks like a little piece of heaven.

laura k said...

Poor Tek. So sad.

Joe Grav said...

It is really nice, although this game is getting very nauseating -- Keene has 10 runs, 14 hits here with one out in the fourth inning

allan said...

it is a nice pic, but i fear there maybe bugs there.

...

is remy illiterate?
can he read? i don't think he can.

Joe Grav said...

ATTA WAY LUGO! He's been useful twice!

allan said...

"productive out" is a horrible phrase, but tek made one. i have to admit it.

laura k said...

Don: "Coco heading plateward..."

Classic Orsillo.

And it's 5-0!

Joe Grav said...

HAHAHAH "Plateward?" I'm going to use that in a game story

Patrick said...

Did you experience the intense flies of NFLD, L, A?

laura k said...

Maybe Jere can use "plateward" in one of his old-tyme stories, but I don't know if you want to use that seriously!

laura k said...

Patrick, no, we really didn't. We had one very short walk where black flies were going nuts - horrible - and a few mosquito problems, but that was about it. Nothing awful. I wonder why? Wrong season?

Patrick said...

As I recall there was nasty flies every single day from June until early October.

I'm referring to the nippers and stouts, of course.

laura k said...

Anyone else know the answer to the Aflac question?

laura k said...

I'm referring to the nippers and stouts, of course.

Newfunese?

allan said...

Sid PC: 24-13-4 8 = 49

12 in the last 2 innings!

Patrick said...

That's right. They know mosquitoes as Nippers. Horse flies and Deer flies as Stouts. Black flies and no-see-ums go by the same name.

I even heard of an extremely rare fly called the 'Timber Fly', found only deep in the woods. It apparently is very big, makes a clicking sound, and it's bite kills.

Joe Grav said...

"Kent Graham sparked a glimmer of hope with a leadoff triple, but the Navigators could not bring him plateward, as Geason, Little, and Provencher all struck out."

,,,Okay, maybe I won't use it.

laura k said...

I'll tell you, Joe, I think you pulled it off with that one. That's a good sentence you got there.

laura k said...

A fiery double!

Joe Grav said...

On fire

allan said...

yeah, this former sportswriter sees nothing wrong with it.

Patrick said...

A story of the Timber Fly

By the description I think I might've seen one while I was there. I'll tell my kids that, anyways (if I have any).

laura k said...

We are just cruising!

allan said...

lucky noodle.

6-0!!!

Joe Grav said...

Yay 6-0

laura k said...

Patrick, I'll have to check that out when I'm not modding. Did you get up to Labrador?

laura k said...

yooooooook

Joe Grav said...

Come on Crispy

allan said...

note:
until you can (like jere) casually drop the phrase "from cleavage to coin slot" into a game story, you have not truly arrived.

Patrick said...

No, I spent a few weeks in Antigonish, NS, before I went to NFLD.

laura k said...

I think Nova Scotia is our next Cdn trip (whenever that will be). I've never been there.

nixon33 said...

hey red sox,
i like the way you're playing tonight.
keep it up!

laura k said...

it got quiet here. i guess everyone's bored with all this winning.

andy said...

Me mommy is coming to visit for the holiday. I have been cleaning.
The Lester machine is grinding the yankees up. Too bad the bullpen will most likely give up 19 runs.

allan said...

it got quiet here. i guess everyone's bored with all this winning.

winning ... whining ... whatever!

Patrick said...

I love this movie

What's the score now? Yawn.

andy said...

lester is just good. not overpowering or very dramatic. He is actually boring to watch. But he is just good.

laura k said...

Andy, please slap yourself upside the head for me. Thanks.

Joe Grav said...

Woo! winning!

andy said...

Lugo on the other hand

laura k said...

I haven't seen that movie yet, so I won't click on the clip.

andy said...

who is this asshole pitcher?

andy said...

there will be blood was actually an entertaining movie

andy said...

Tek and lugo are automatic outs lately. it used to just be lugo.

Patrick said...

Move it to the front of your list, L.

Lester has edged out Pedroia as my favorite player. He's just so awesome.

laura k said...

Varitek has been an auto out for a long time.

laura k said...

It's definitely high on the list. But I won't see it until at least November - or later!

allan said...

who is this asshole pitcher?

Dan Giese .... Male Prostitute.

andy said...

you know he looks like a gigolo

Patrick said...

New SI poll. Players voted 31% Ryan Howard has the most 'raw power' in the majors. Who got second? Banana picker Willy Mo Pena with a big 12%

laura k said...

Nah, that's Giambi w/ the mustache. All he needs is a velvet jacket and a cigarette holder.

laura k said...

banana picker?

Joe Grav said...

Haha Jeter

Joe Grav said...

Lester pitch count update?

Patrick said...

WMP credits his strength to working on his fathers banana farm.

laura k said...

Cool. He is strong, so I guess it worked.

Patrick said...
New SI poll. Players voted 31% Ryan Howard has the most 'raw power'

For some reason they wrote RAW POWER like that , what the fuck does raw power mean....

laura k said...

9C, I thought the same thing. Let's ask a meaningless question and see what people say!

Joe Grav said...

power that hasn't been cooked

laura k said...

of course! silly me.

Joe Grav said...

Power consumed raw may be hazardous to your health.

Patrick said...

Oh, duh, it's an Iggy Pop album. WMP must be a big fan.

allan said...

STOOGES!

now we're talkin' ...

Jere said...

Which is cooler? The Stooges or the Three Stooges?

laura k said...

Need you ask???

Stooges > 3 Stooges

I thought it was an SI question, not a WMP question.

allan said...

Rock Stooges > 3 Stooges

But I'm biased. I own the 7-CD Fun House box -- with about 27 takes of every song!
