Lester was good (7-6-3-0-8, 107), but Garza -- named the MVP of the series -- was better (7-2-1-3-9, 118).
Dustin Pedroia lined a home run to left in the first -- 6th pitch of the game -- and David Ortiz followed with a walk. Garza retired the next two Sox and outside of hitting FY in the third and walking him in the sixth, no other Sock reached base until there was one out in the seventh.
By that time, the Rays led 3-1. Lester did set down the first nine Rays batters, but a two-out double from Evan Longoria in the fourth tied the game and three straight hits to open the fifth -- Willy Aybar double, Dioner Navarro single, Rocco Baldelli single -- gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. Aybar donged to start the seventh to give the Rays a two-run lead.
Boston tried to rally. After Kevin Youkilis popped to shortstop to start the seventh, JD Drew walked on four pitches and Jason Bay singled. After a mound visit from Joe Maddon, Garza -- working slowly -- got Mark Kotsay to fly to right and then struck out Jason Varitek on a changeup in the dirt.
In the eighth, Alex Cora batted -- Tito was not very Assassiny tonight -- and grounded to shortstop. Jason Bartlett did not charge the ball and it clanked off his glove for an error. Maddon went to the bullpen -- repeatedly. He used four relievers in the inning. Dan Wheeler allowed a single to right from Coco Crisp but got FY on a routine fly to left. JP Howell came in and got Ortiz to ground to second (on seven pitches) and Coco was forced. Chad Bradford fell behind Yook 3-0, battled back to a full count, and walked him. Then David Price came in and struck out Drew on a 1-2 check swing.
Price -- who began the year in the lowly Florida State League -- came back out for the ninth. Jason Bay (cbbfbf) walked, but Price struck out Kotsay (ffbbc) and Varitek (bsfbs). Jed Lowrie pinch-hit for Cora and grounded a 0-1 pitch right to Akinori Iwamura, who grabbed the ball on a high hop and raced to second for the Red-Sox-season-ending force.
The Rays and Phillies will play Game 1 of the World Series at the Trop on Wednesday night.

Fact: Tampa Bay is
The Red Sox have won nine consecutive ALCS elimination games. Tonight, they go for #10.
Kevin Youkilis:
It's amazing. It's really amazing the games we play, and how much fun it's been. When we're all old and our children are all grown up, we'll sit around and meet up and talk about games like the game the other day. It's a wild ride, and we're very spoiled.Jonathan Papelbon admits he's "pretty beat up". His fastball was only 92-93 mph last night.
For me, in these things, if I don't have my A-plus fastball, I'd better have my A-plus mental approach and my A-plus headset. My head was right tonight.Hideki Okajima threw two scoreless innings last night -- the third time he has done so in this series.
From Josh Beckett's post-game interview:
Josh, you struggled in the postseason thus far, but tonight you looked like the Josh Beckett of 2003 and 2007.Also: Post-game Q&As from Maddon and Francona.
I don't know really if that's even a question. ...
The Clifford Floyd at-bat in the fourth --
Clifford?
Some of his friends call him that. ...
Joe Maddon:
We've got one more shot. We can truly teach ourselves a lesson. We can do something that will make an imprint on us for a long time. You sure can, Joe, and you will, but it's not going to be the good kind of imprint.
Evan Longoria makes no sense:
In my opinion, there'll be less pressure on anyone. We'll throw it out there and have fun. I think there was more pressure when we were up 3-to-1. There was pressure on us to end it. Elimination games are always pressure-packed. You feel you have to win them, and in that situation you start to press. Now it's back to 0-0, and we'll come out and play the way we've been playing all year.Dood, this is an elimination game! So start pressin'!
Clifford:
They're the World Series champs. You've got to take it from them. They know how to win. They stay poised in tough situations. That said, it's going to happen [tonight].Sean McAdam, Herald:
The Rays had spent the off day Friday swearing up and down that, nope, there wasn't going to be any sort of carryover effect from Game 5, and yep, they had already forgotten all about it and seemed almost offended by the line of questioning.***
Crushing loss? What crushing loss?
But defeats like Thursday's don't wash off in the shower. They stay with you. ...
The cracks are starting to show now. Arguably the best defensive team in the league during the season, the Rays have withered in the field in the last two games. ... The bullpen, so critical to the team's magic this season, suddenly looks vulnerable. ...
Game 7 comes tonight, the game the Rays didn't want. They have whiffed on two chances to put the Red Sox away for good and tonight they get their last chance.
It worked in 2004. It worked in 2007. It'll work in 2008.
One.
One game. One win. That's all.
Tonight.
Totally skipping work.
ReplyDeleteI have to correct you on one thing: Lester did not start last year's Game 7 in the ALCS. Daisuke Matsuzaka started that pennant-winning game.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the back cover of the NY Post I have today has the screaming headline: "THE JOY OF SOX"
ReplyDeleteThought you'd like to know that...
I have to correct you on one thing
ReplyDeleteThat's what I get from cut and pasting from an article without checking the facts.
I'll delete the whole sentence. For history's sake -- :>) -- it was: "Lester has started Boston's last three series-clinching games: 2007 ALCS 7, 2007 WS 4, and 2008 ALDS 4."
BTW, the back cover of the NY Post I have today has the screaming headline: "THE JOY OF SOX"
ReplyDeleteThat's not the one they have on their website. I guess it's a different edition. I'd like to see it somehow.
Man, I'd love to see that headline! Can someone scan it and post it?
ReplyDeleteAlso love that Beckett "interview".
Like Joe Grav, I'm supposed to work tonight until 10. But I think I feel a migraine coming on.
Red Sox = bomb.
ReplyDeleteSome days, you just can't get rid of them.
(er, stop watching at around 2:14 for the metaphor to work properly!)
I assume like yesterday, I'll be nervous at work in the afternoon and evening, friggin' antsy to get home, and then, during the game, as calm as last night.
ReplyDelete10/19/08-- ALCS Game 7
ReplyDeleteDon't Bury Me... I'm Not Dead
It's time for Jose Melendez's KEYS TO THE ALCS
Lester has to go six good innings. We can deal with less, but I'd rather not.
ReplyDeleteJeemer threw 32 pitches last night, so he will likely not be seen unless we get extras.
Bot threw only 8 pitches, but was on fumes in Game 5 and did not have his A stuff last night.
Expect Tito to try to get 2 IP out of MDC -- who hopefully can regain his September dominance. Also, I would not be surprised to see Dice in the pen.
Tito might try to squeeze an inning out of Lopez, maybe Byrd. God help us all if we see Mr. Toasty and we're not ahead by 15 runs.
We could use an early attack a la 2004 ALCS 7. Bury these fuckers early and enjoy the countdown.
Let's hope TBS is able to broadcast the game.
Curt is posting at SoSH. He was also in the Game 5 game thread, at least in the late innings I skimmed.
ReplyDeleteThis is for all of you!
ReplyDeleteGO SOX!
is it time yet?
ReplyDeleteSo stoked for this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gong show this weekend was. Oktoberfest friday, brick brewery "tour" yesterday. Watched up to the tek dong here then as soon as I got to the brewery put the game on there and watched the rest of it with the group of people. All the while telling them that it's inevitable. Once it was going back to Tampa, Rays are effed in the eh.
And now, time for some mojo risin.

I figure Dice K is avaailabele tonight as well...
ReplyDeleteI will be out tonight, either watching at my friend's house or courting a lady, so I might miss the game all together.
ReplyDeleteBecause it worked in games 1,5, and 6:
Let's fuck these mother fuckers.

Smart Ass..:)
During the regular season, Francona often seemed to start Cora in order to rest someone else. It made the team weaker for that game, but it was done with a view to the long term.
ReplyDeleteIf he's doing it for Game 7 of the ALCS, we can hopefully be confident it's because he wants to win this game.
I will be out tonight, either watching at my friend's house or courting a lady, so I might miss the game all together.
ReplyDeletePatrick also turned off Game 5 when we were down 5-0, and didn't even know we won til 4:30 p.m. the next day.
Patrick, get with the program, man. This is GAME 7 OF THE FUCKING ALCS. Either watch the game with the chickie or "court" her the next day!

ReplyDeleteLet me hear it Brother!!! Now is the time for all good men (and women) to come to their aid of their country as in RED SOX NATION. Be there for must see TV because there is only ONE OCTOBER!!!
thus ended the message.
Yes, this can be a good test for the young lady, to see if she understands your Soxishness.
ReplyDelete"I will be out tonight, either watching at my friend's house or courting a lady, so I might miss the game all together."
ReplyDeleteYou better marry this chick, Patrick.
Yes, this can be a good test for the young lady, to see if she understands your Soxishness.
ReplyDeleteSomething tells me Patrick doesn't care if she understands or not.
I feel a migraine coming on... I may have to leave work early...
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's convenient to live where no one follows your baseball team.
ReplyDeleteOK, Red Sox, Tampa has pissed away their precious lead in the series. They have nothing to fall back on if they lose tonight and don't tell me those guys won't start thinking, as soon as the Sox take a lead on them in the game, that they were 7 outs away with a seven run lead. Hopefully, the Sox will take the lead early and give the Rays plenty of time to think about how they choked away this series. I like the Sox' chances tonight ...a lot...
ReplyDeleteEvening people,
ReplyDeleteIt's 363 days since I sat in exactly this spot in my home here in England and watched Game 7 of the ALCS whilst talking to you guys, knowing full well that I had to get up for a work no more than 2 hours after the game would finish.
This year I intend to the do the same but have made my preperations; this year I don't have to go to work until midday...I feel like I've grown up so much LOL.
Good luck Red Sox...for all our sakes!

Bob Ryan pointing out Beckett was only 83 pitches shy of Tiant in Game 4, '75.
ReplyDeleteI'm sensing a BJ choke tonight.
ReplyDeleteBut enough about Patrick's date!
Poor Patrick, all of this abuse and hes not here to defend himself.
ReplyDeleteFrag that, keep on piling on because he deserves it.
Yes, this can be a good test for the young lady, to see if she understands your Soxishness.
ReplyDeleteDuring the 2003 playoffs I was in Luxembourg for 2 months. Met a girl midway through my stay and was scheduled to depart the morning of Game 7 of the ALCS, arriving in Boston just before the first pitch.
As my day of departure neared, she asked me to extend my stay and go to Paris with her. This was the morning of Game 6. I said:
"If the Red Sox lose tonight, I'll change my ticket and we'll go to Paris. If they win, I have to go home for the World Series."
We won Game 6. I left.
We lost Game 7. I thought I'd never see her again and made a bad choice.
She's now my wife.
And we probably laughed harder than anyone else in the theatre during the Fever Pitch trailer when they showed the "Come to Paris with me./Sorry, the Red Sox need me" scene.

No bad choice you won on both accounts......kind of......
While waiting on Steve Harvey to show up on the tv, it would be nice to see the Sox explode in the first inning tonight.
ReplyDeleteI don't have anyone to worry about except the Sox... But one of the reasons why we got along as long as we did was because she really did understand the Red Sox/Bruins/BC thing. She was never a fan, but always understood and even fed into it sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI'd say that is, in fact, an important thing to learn about a potential significant other.
Either watch the game with the chickie or "court" her the next day!
ReplyDeleteOr "court" her during the game. Wasn't there some crude joke about Canadians and hockey on TV and how they like to have sex...?
I'll be at The Bar!
Enjoy it -- and win win win
And we probably laughed harder than anyone else in the theatre during the Fever Pitch trailer when they showed the "Come to Paris with me./Sorry, the Red Sox need me" scene.
ReplyDeleteNobody saw that movie in the theater, so I'm going to have to call you out on this one.
WE SCARE THEM SHITLESS JUST BY SHOWING UP ALIVE!!!
ReplyDeleteFucking right! Let's get this fucking shit ON!
ReplyDelete...I mean, hey guys!
Did anyone notice how when 24 hours ago they sent it to "TV's Bloopers," that the first blooper was actually Red Sox-related? At that point I thought maybe they were fucking with us.
ReplyDeleteHopefully TBS shows us all 9 tonight....
What, no Steve Harvey tonight? Aw, man I am so bummed out.
ReplyDeleteIT IS ON!!!
The trailer, not the movie. Forget what we were actually seeing when the preview came on.
ReplyDeletesaying that shitty "experience vs exuberance" phrase again.
ReplyDeleteNobody saw that movie in the theater, so I'm going to have to call you out on this one.
ReplyDeleteI saw it in the theater.
Why is it that mlb.tv can't show even ten minutes of pre-game...I'm sick of a blank screen...
ReplyDelete...oh wait its on :-)
I saw it in the theater, too.
ReplyDeletewhy did chip say the red sox have had a "dream season"? sound smore like the rays...
ReplyDeleteWell I didn't see it in a theater but somebody bought it for christmas.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to reiterate how much SENSE it makes to have all the kids' favorite contemporary "rock" band, Bon Jovi, be the musical voice of Major League Baseball.
ReplyDeleteif i saw it in a cutout bin, i'd buy it. my book is in it --just a blurry shot -- not as much as originally planned.
ReplyDeleteI made it for the first pitch! Traffic on the MA pike was dreadful, and I was getting nervous....
ReplyDeleteit's really not a bad movie at all.
ReplyDeleteIT IS ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
"I have nothin'" --Buck Martinez, not knowing he was on air yet. Most accurate thing he's said all series.
ReplyDeleteAllan, tell us more about this product placement attempt!
I got it as part of the package, 2004 games and all of the other DVDs that came out that year.
ReplyDeleteshell this motherfucker.
ReplyDeleteHere we go!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen my kiddos were crushed by the losses @ fenway, I told them to take heart, that it would go to 7.
ReplyDeleteAnd here we are.
GO SOX!
sarcasm? if not, i will tell you later if you remind me.
ReplyDeleteOK, TV is on, the game is there, and I just hit the mute button. I'd say I'm ready.
ReplyDeleteno sarc!
ReplyDeleteON!!
ReplyDeleteShould be quite a ride tonight.
ReplyDeletewow, Garza's a wuss
ReplyDeleteooooooooo it's too loud for me.
ReplyDeletehe did not wear them in fenway though, iir
That was a good sac bunt, Ococ. Too bad there was nobody on...
ReplyDeleteHi all! My migraine suddenly lifted...
ReplyDeletei'd really like to see the pitch zone thing on that 2nd pitch to Coco. Ball would be completely off screen I think
ReplyDeleteFUCK YEAH!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFUCK YEAH!

ReplyDeleteOK. We are ahead. Now...we just have to shut them out. NO biggie.
ReplyDeletethat needed to not go off wall. that needed to go over wall. and did.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot on that replay.
ReplyDeleteNo produce placement "attempt" - the producers asked Allan for a copy of the book to be in the movie!
ReplyDeleteI loved that I flicked onto to here to read the comments and you were all ahead of MLB.tv...its nice to know whats coming ;-)
ReplyDeleteLets see the melt down start.
ReplyDeleteFull count. Tire him out, Papi.
ReplyDeleteThe Puffin has cotton balls in his ears.
ReplyDeleteDavid OR-BB.
right but there was an attempt to put it in and from what he said it sounded like it didn't happen as planned. I wasn't being sarcastic, I am a huge fan of Allan and his book! I wish it had gotten in instead of that stupid Dirt Dogs shirt Fallon was wearing!
ReplyDeleteFFLO.
ReplyDeleteBB. Nice. Youk is the man to do it.
ReplyDeleteDarling does know that Papi has power to the oppo field? Right?
ReplyDeleteI feel a YOOOOUUUUKKK coming.
OK Yook , bolster your ALCS MVP case
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone think Manny is watching this? I was wondering if he was going to poke his head out from the Monster wall door during G5.
ReplyDeleteI made it for the first pitch! Traffic on the MA pike was dreadful, and I was getting nervous....
ReplyDeleteAmy, Allan was the same way on the way home. I had to convince him that getting in an accident would mean he'd miss too much of the game, so he should slow down.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK
ReplyDeletecome on kev
ReplyDeleteJere I knew you weren't being sarcastic, totally knew. :)
ReplyDeleteAmy and Allan both had first-inning dong premonitions!
ReplyDeletenice snag
ReplyDeleteAlmost...
ReplyDelete"Does anyone think Manny is watching this?"
ReplyDeleteI thought of this last night--I imagined him pointing out over the wall frm his couch in a HR prediction for our hitters.
too bad gross was not out there.
ReplyDeleteThis fucker's rattle. The Puffin is not amused.
ReplyDeleteI miss Manny. I wish he were going to the WS like us.
ReplyDeleteWHo is the puffin and why?
ReplyDeleteDo you think Manny wishes he was out in left field for the Red Sox tonight?
ReplyDeleteagggh i disagree with the call
ReplyDeleteOK, hold the lead, Lester.
ReplyDeleteNo way was that a strike. Fragging Ump.
ReplyDeleteChip acting like giving up a mere run is like the best you could've possibly done.
ReplyDeleteno fooking swing.
ReplyDeleteshut em down sid.
that looked like the type of call you leave to the third base ump. He did call it on the swing right?
ReplyDeleteLETS GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't John Lester look like he just stepped out of an Iowa cornfield? :)
ReplyDeleteHe's like corn fed beef.
Garza's ear plugs remind me of John Goodman in Barton Fink. COME INTO MY HOUSE, GARZA! I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!
ReplyDeleteI'd say we let him get away easy in that inning. Next inning he will not be so lucky.
Yesterday they seemed to show 3 replays even on routine plays, but no second look at that alleged strike...
ReplyDeleteHe's like corn fed beef.
ReplyDeleteNot very tasty?
Garza desperately trying to clear the mechanism.
ReplyDeleteDoes Manny still live in a hotel in Florida? Or did he move to L.A.?
ReplyDeleteLOL--no *very* tasty.
ReplyDeleteDid Lester's scouting "report" just include the little known fact that this is a game 7? Does he have a good record in the 0 game 7's he's pitched in?
ReplyDeleteIs it too early to start counting down outs?
ReplyDeleteI was trying to think of something re corn fed beef. Raised in a feed lot? Tasteless?
ReplyDeleteBut I didn't want to appear unwelcoming to our friend ljcohen. :)
s1c, not for me!! But people might get pissed off at us if we start too early.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fair number of Red Sox fans there tonight.
ReplyDeleteI got in trouble counting down outs. Jere is very superstitious so I won't do it!
ReplyDeletecaught
ReplyDeleteIt's those freckles and the babyface. Lester just looks like a farmboy to me, l-girl. :)
ReplyDeleteOk, l-girl, then in my head I am saying 25.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA. Trying to Trupe us there? No way.
ReplyDeletenot Truped on that one.
ReplyDeleteDrew > Gross
Wicked line drive there. Gross wouldn't have had it...
ReplyDeleteTBS is going to trupe every out tonight, eh.
ReplyDeleteDid he struggle?
ReplyDeleteI prefer to count up. So two outs....
ReplyDeleteCastig truped me a little bit...
ReplyDeleteha, no struggle, but Chip says, "track..wall.." AFTER it was caught.
ReplyDeleteDrew races back and makes a nice catch at the wall and it is no big deal.
ReplyDeleteBaldelli's catch on the other hand was end of the world shattering omg how fabulous was that.
One more strike, Jon.
ReplyDeleteJon was born in Tacoma, Washington, which is about as far as you can get from Iowa in the contiguous 48 states.
ReplyDeleteDid he struggle?
ReplyDeletehaha, I believe for once they did not mention a struggle with the lights/roof/crowd/figment-of-TBS-announcer's-imagination.
Hi all. ran up and got the computer during the break. I'm having trouble splitting my attention. Last night I was working, but thursday I was so focused on the game I couldn't turn on the computer.

Guys, the MUTE wants you. It's great. Very liberating, positive vibes, and I swear you see more details.
I gotta lay low on this thread. Gotta concentrate on the game more. But I'm here.
ReplyDeleteThe real BGJ will show them how it's done...
ReplyDeleteMartinez talks about how Crawford is getting a good look at Lester's pitches...whilst Crawford is daydreaming lol.
ReplyDeleteNice first inning Jon!
i don't know Phil, the people in East Tacoma pretty much consider themselves midwesterners:)
ReplyDelete20 pitches each
ReplyDeleteCommercials are good times to thread.
ReplyDeleteLester's curve is fucking working tonight. And he's throwing it a lot.
ReplyDeletea-con, for me hearing the crowd noise is worth putting up with the announcers. Watching baseball with no sound just doesn't work for me.
ReplyDeleteGuys, the MUTE wants you. It's great. Very liberating, positive vibes, and I swear you see more details.
ReplyDeleteYes the mute is calling but everybody is watching and they all scream when I mute it, so, well I AM OUT VOTED.

angel hernandez.
ReplyDeleteah. that must've been the injury delay I saw on gameday yesterday.
More runs, please.
ReplyDeletenick, yeah, they actually had to change home plate umps, and therefore the strike zone (ridiculously) in mid-game.
ReplyDeleteBay has to put a dong over the Sweetbay sign. It's just so obvious.
ReplyDeleteThread is MOVING tonight. Even at slack times, it seems harder to keep up with.
ReplyDeleteWow
ReplyDeleteSeriously, TBS? Cut to the fans before the ump makes the call on a close play at first?
ReplyDeleteWhat does Kotsay need to do to get a hit?
ReplyDelete"There are two positions on the field where you can have a positive impact without hitting: catcher and shortstop."
ReplyDeleteAmerican League? WTF.

ReplyDeleteouch.
ReplyDeleteWell, Cora will just have to demonstrate why Tito went with him when he leads off the next inning.
And WHY is Cora playing?
ReplyDeleteMy dad taught ESL to Spanish-speakers for decades, and while he agrees that by rule, the second to last syllable should be emphasized as long as there's no accent mark, he said he's taught plenty of Ortiz's, and they all said "or-TEEZ."
ReplyDeleteESPN's page on Papi does agree with Buck, saying "OR-teez."
Not so fast, Longoria.
ReplyDeleteM.I.A.!
ReplyDeletenice job Cora. I really wanted that out.
ReplyDeleteLow throw. Why is Cora in? Was there any explanation?
ReplyDeletecrawford does not seriously have 'paper planes' as his song , does he?
ReplyDeleteamy, read the Cora explanation in this very post.
