G80: Mariners 3, Red Sox 2

Mariners - 001 010 001 - 3 7 1
Red Sox - 020 000 000 - 2 4 0
Takashi Saito walked the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, then allowed a one-out bloop single to right by Chris Woodward that gave Seattle their winning edge. Saito threw 38 pitches in the inning.

Jason Varitek gave Boston a 2-0 lead in the second with his 12th home run of the season. The Red Sox would get only three more hits: Jacoby Ellsbury's single right after Tek's dong, Kevin Youkilis two-out double off the Wall in the fifth, and Varitek's single in the sixth.

In that sixth inning, the Red Sox had runners at first and third with no outs and failed to score. Rocco Baldelli (who had been HBP) was caught off third base on Ellsbury's sharp hit back to the mound. After the 1525 rundown, Jeff Bailey grounded into a 543 double play.

Garrett Olson (4.81, 88 ERA+) / Brad Penny (4.79, 97 ERA+)

The Globe's Adam Kilgore lists Tim Wakefield's Top 10 Red Sox starts, using Bill James's Game Scores.

Down in Pawtucket, Jed Lowrie played for the first time since last Sunday (he had been hit on the left knee by a pitch the previous week). He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as the PawSox DH. He hopes to play some shortstop this weekend.

Mike Lowell is feeling much better since his Synvisc injection:
I'm actually relieved they took out the fluid. I wasn't sure if they were going to find anything, and having the fluid in there explained why there was discomfort. I would have maybe questioned things structurally if they didn't find fluid. (The shot) was instant relief. ... This was more of a precautionary DL than a necessary DL.

  3. So nice to see Schilling dress up for the Gehrig reception. I dress like that when I mow the lawn.

  4. Slightly slow thread on this July 4th, I see.

I have done very little today. Not so on other July 4ths.

    - 2004 went to Burlington, Vermont
    - 2005 drove up the coast of Maine, almost to Rockland
    - 2006 My grandfather had died on the 1st and we drove his truck up to Portland...not much of a trip but it was something.
    - 2007 drove to Rutland, Vermont for no particular reason. Ended up actually one town into New York. Turned around and came back.
    - 2008 I spent at my grandmother's house up in northern Maine.

2009? Not much! Although I might actually do something tomorrow. So it could count!

Anyways, I like baseball. I like thunderstorms. Might end up seeing both today!

  22. I'm thinking for the health of all who may be playing this game, that should be taken off of it.

Just like "cheese" and "gas" for Eck. You'd be bombed after two innings.

  34. Thomas Jefferson, letter to William S. Smith, November 13, 1787:

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.

The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...

And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance?

Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.
