Red Sox - 011 200 410 - 9 12 1Baltimore outhomered Boston 5-4 -- two of them coming during a fifth-inning battering of Matsuzaka -- and took the second game of the series.
Orioles - 100 064 10x - 12 12 0
Dice started with a hiccup (nerves, maybe?) when he walked Adam Jones (only Jones's 3rd BB in 107 PA this year), threw away a pickoff attempt, and allowed an RBI single to Nick Markakis. He recovered to end the inning with a GIDP and a K, and then retired nine of the next ten hitters (the one man to reach base was thrown out stealing on a perfect throw from Victor Martinez).
Through 4.1 innings, Matsuzaka had allowed only one hit and the Sox had a 4-1 lead. He was at only 70 pitches -- but then the wheels came off. Home run, single, walk, fielder's choice, single, single, home run, double. And it was 7-4 Birds and Tim Wakefield was coming in for his first relief appearance in almost six years. Wake allowed three home runs as the Orioles managed to get another run or two every time the Red Sox started to creep back.
Sox Dongs: David Ortiz hit two solo bombs, and Jonathan Van Every and Kevin Youkilis each hit one homer.
Last night, Dave O'Brien expressed surprise when J.D. Drew took five straight pitches, acting as though it was both strange and rare. Well, it happened seven times tonight, including four times in the first two innings. Drew was one of the seven.Daisuke Matsuzaka / Brad Bergesen
Dice makes his 2010 debut. In three rehab starts, he allowed only three earned runs in 16.2 innings, with one walk and 13 strikeouts. His pitch count will be limited to approximately 90. (... so, 3 IP?)
The Red Sox have acquired infielder Niuman Romero from Cleveland for cash. Romero, 25, made his MLB debut last September and played in 10 games (-5 OPS+!).Scutaro, SS

B-Jays lost, so we can hop back into 3rd with a win.
I assume everyone knows why the Birds' pitcher was on the DL? Pretty funny. And by funny, I mean pathetic.

He hurt his arm during a shoot of an Orioles promo ad.
Has the lineup changed since Allan posted it?
DOB: "I don't know if it's good or bad, but how many big leaguers see five pitches and never take the bat off their shoulder?
The very first batter of tonight's game did it?
Huh....
Same lineup. I see the Globe has not fixed its typo.
OT; Holy Fuck! The main pipe from the Quabbin to Boston has blown out, a state of emergency has been declared. 8 million GPH being diverted into the Charles.
there goes the no-walker.
Ahh yes, Dice.
He walked only 1 in 16.2 AAA innings, I was hoping for more of that tonight.
PS: Jones looked at 5 pitches in a row!!!OMG!!11!!!
RATS - rats!
I wonder if Wakefield has been already warmed up?
Hey Wake: Maybe you should not unpack right away out there in the pen.
Embree was cut loose for Dice, if you did not know.
A, are you listening to radio to check on OB?
Scouting report on Matsuzaka: Will throw two strikes followed by three balls. Don't bother taking the bat off your shoulder until pitch 6.
No, no radio for me.
Yook with the "OB Special"!
What if he mentions your post???
I'll keep my ears open for Drew's AB....
Someone will let us know.
He did not.
Gone!
PAPI DONG!!!!!!!!!
LET IT FLO
FLO!
QUADRANGULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aww, Ortiz, why you gotta tease me like this.
Beltre is a better player than Drew. His AVG is .338!
very loud pro-sox crowd in nesn b'cast.
Obie seemed gloomy whenever he mentioned the two homeruns last night; prim and censorious in a told-ya-so way when he mentioned the two strikeouts.
Hey John, nice to see you back in threads. Or maybe you have been threading when I haven't.
A new gamethreader is going to Fenway - and Boston - for the first time. We were all giving him tips on seats, tickets and hotels, but I suggested he look for you for tips on things to do in the city itself.
No, he's a better player because he swings more often.
Obie seemed gloomy whenever he mentioned the two homeruns last night; prim and censorious in a told-ya-so way when he mentioned the two strikeouts.
So it was not my imagination!
Maybe OB will mention that McDonald looked at 17 STRAIGHT PITCHES last night -- while he was dropping his jaw at Drew's mere 14.
I only listened to the actual at-bats when I got home last night. He was ho-hum on the first HR but he was *very* animated for the 2nd one. No idea what he did while recapping at other times.
End of semester, l-girl.... Whw was it in a thread a week or so ago who said that baseball is all about anxiety? It was nicely said.
This time of year after dealing with a raft of student stuff all day, the 2010 RS are not exactly what I need to unwind.
I posted about dogs on wmtc though--

If I can--but I haven't lived in Boston since 1963 so when it comes to nightlife and such I can only direct him to places featuring that wild new dance craze, the Twist!

Not today baby!
Did I just hear CAUGHT STEALING????
The new Vic!
V-Mart didn't triple pump before that throw to second, I take it?

Ha ha. You gave me such good advice, we had a stellar walking tour based on your recommends. The guy doesn't seem like a kid and he's from the Prairies (Cdn midwest) so he may be looking for just the kinds of things you can point him too.
I gotta work and thread at the same time - at two separate computers - so I will be gone for long stretches. But I am still here.
remy noting victor throwing over the top rather than his old sidearmy way, which had the ball sailing. this was a perfect on the $ throw. easy tag!
Van Dong!
Fuck you EEI, you almost missed that!
JVE!!!
VAN DONG!!!!!!!!!!!
Give that man a nickname!
That was quick. First pitch out of here.
Imagine being on the Pirates AAA team a week and then hittin a HR for the Red Sox..there is a reason why ther are the pirates....
I should turn the lights on when I type....
Let me tell you, John, I'd love to hear about this "twist" you mention -- I hear it's sweeping the nation!
I'm the fella that L-girl mentioned: I'm going to Boston early in August. L-girl mentioned that she appreciated your advice.
I'd like to hear what you have to say about Beantown.
Fuck you EEI, you almost missed that!
I thought Allan said that. Now I realize it was radio and A is not listening to radio, but it sure sounded like him. :)
I could probably find the gamethread where JohnGF and Amy and I talked about Boston. I may have saved it as a text file anyway.
John, if you want I can look for it and save you work. But then, you tailored it to the kinds of things we wanted to do.
Van Glove?
Van EVERYWHERE
jacoby who?
Yes! Van Everywhere. Perfect.
Hey nathan, if you follow my blogger profile to the 101 blog, I have an email address under the title. Tell me what kinds of things you like and I'll do my best.
I do have somewhat more recent Hub memories than 1963. I drove a cab there during the impossible dream season, 1967.
Thanks, L-girl; I really don't want to be a bother.
I'm just looking for tips re: worthwhile sites that may not make the guidebooks I've been consulting.
&, van Every's nickname? How 'bout van Everyman?
maybe dice was nervous in the 1st because he looks solid now.
he walked jones to start the 1st -- it was only jones's 3rd BB this year in 107 PA. (OBP of .240-something. great leadoff idea, kirk.)
En Fuego!
yoooooooooook
Mr. RBI strikes again!
Allow me to doff my Boston "B" cap to you, John. If you teach intro academic writing, you're a stronger man than I. I'm also an English prof. I'll be sure to email you with my queries, etc.
Nathan/John, I'll look for my text file on it.
We used to call him Van Everyman, I think.
Weeeeee, fun! Just what playing the Orioles should be.
beltre is hitting a ton lately.
Not really academic writing in my 101. Personal essays lite, a short research paper.
I could teach lit if I wanted, but it seems I don't. I did work out a course on dogs in literature once but bailed before it actually hit the catalog.
I am under the impression JohnGF teaches writing to non-writers, and perhaps more than a few non-thinkers. Sounds very interesting to me.
John, sir, teaching intro is impressive to me. I've been scrounging for work at a few universities, & I've been assigned an intro class in the fall. I'm hoping to turn some non-writers into writers. Most often, by October, I find myself asking students whether they even bothered to take English classes in highschool.
Dice-K's performance is raising these two eyebrows. Nice.
mofo
Oh and jinx.
bah
wakefield up
aw shit...
Crap. Friggin roller coaster again.
shit, that's about all for dice.
C'mon Dice. Get an out. (Although the slow roller was a cheap hit.)
Ugh
aw shit squared
NOOOOOOOOOO
Wow, that should do it for Dice.
seems like dice ran out of gas all at once. they are killing the fastball
yes, that was indeed it.
surely wake is warm...
wake not warm. fuck.
oh now he is.
decidedly less fun, this inning.
10th man to bat.
maybe tito should have had wake up a little earlier, since dice was closing in on his pc.... weel, it would have been only a batter or two earlier, i guess, atmost.

1 out, 0 on for rays
So did he say "once" or not? :>)
Oh for chrissakes.
man, fuck this nonsense.
wigginton has seen 9 pitches, swung twice, 2 dongs.
Ha, that's funny. Ready, set, type!
Who do you want to believe, redsock--the librarian or the English teacher???
Why didn't they pull him during the big inning?
FTS I am going to take a shower.
Not a librarian yet, but still a transcriptionist, part of what I do for a living!
OK. This is not funny.
Why didn't they pull him during the big inning?
Wouldn't have mattered.
"Not a librarian yet, but still a transcriptionist, part of what I do for a living!"
I knew that, l-girl, but I thought redsock might forget it for a moment, overawed by the prestige of "English teacher."
Well, this officially stinks.
I knew you knew, and I suspected your perfidious motive.
Now I will go look up perfidious to see if I used it correctly.
Yes, I do believe the stinkage is official.
2 hits but a long way to come back.
well, now.
was just thinking a yook dong might mean something. should aposted it.
What did I miss??? How did it get to be 11-8???
Uh...
jesus christ wake. fuckin a.
No good can ever come of having a knuckleballer in your bullpen. Ever never.
mdc up
TIZZLE TIME!!!!!!!!!
alright, we will not give up.
This is pretty wild!
floMax!
The smell is slowly subsiding. Maybe...
A 2 dong night for Papi!
Man, home run derby tonight.
In any case we won't go quietly. OB: "Pitching is only a rumour tonight."
So will someone pls tell me how the Sox went from 4 runs to 8 runs?
BTW the Bruins beat the Flyers 5-4 in OT to take game 1
sox 7th:
mcdonald F9
hall single
scutaro double
pedroia 1-3
martinez single, 2 rbi
yook dong, 2 rbi
running out of outs. hold 'em here and we need 3 in the 9th.
Penis, it looks like we really may be going nowhere this year.
Who gave up the dong to Markakis?
Thanks, A. I lost my audio for a while.
In any case we won't go quietly. OB: "Pitching is only a rumour tonight."
Nice transcription! (And not a bad line from Obie.) I agree completely with that transcription except, of course, being a true blue USAian, Obie said, "rumor."
But what if I was typing for a Canadian baseball fan? :)
Markakis HR from Wake
Was a good line, yes.
wake allowed 5 hits (3 of them dongs)
top of the order in the 9th.
And they have no bullpen. Less than us, even.
I don't get why Meredith is not their closer.
FY chasing ball 3....
yook - get on
drew will tie it.
The only clean water in Boston is in Baltimore :(
clean
crap.
everyone in the east loses, except the orioles. rays lost 4-2 in 10.
Obie says that rumor line again--halving its power by doubling its occurence.
Game over. 'Night.
halving its power by doubling its occurence
Ah, that's nice, too.
Red Sox have acquired infielder Niuman Romero
Newman!
