Phillies - 000 100 100 - 2 10 0Lackey had a very strong start (7-6-2-0-3, 86), but his performance was overshadowed by the laser show in the first three innings.
Red Sox - 543 000 00x - 12 17 0
With one out and one on in the first against Moyer, Martinez doubled, Ortiz doubled, Beltre doubled, and Lowell homered. Scutaro started the second with a single, then Pedroia doubled, Martinez doubled, and Ortiz doubled. And Moyer was changing into street clothes: 1-9-9-1-1, 61.
Scutaro and Ortiz each had three hits and Flo knocked in four runs.Jamie Moyer / John Lackey

Moyer (rookie card, at left) has pitched against 20 players who are already in the Hall of Fame, including Steve Carlton, who was the opposing pitcher in his debut, and Mike Schmidt, who was inducted 15 years ago! Moyer had six seasons under his belt when Tim Wakefield made his debut with the Pirates. Terry Francona was Moyer's teammate on the 1986 Cubs.
When Moyer pitched for the Red Sox, they were still a year away from trading Heathcliff Slocumb to Seattle. Moyer has faced batters born in six different decades.
About a month ago, on May 7, Moyer became the oldest pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout. He has pitched shutouts 24 years apart and he may be the only pitcher to throw shutouts in four different decades.
He has allowed 501 home runs, five away from breaking the all-time mark set by Robin Roberts.
Beginning with Daisuke Matsuzaka's no-hit bid on May 22, the Phillies are 5-12 and have averaged only 2.3 runs a game. In 9 of those 17 games, they have scored 0 or 1 run.

Ha ha, very good!
People wonder why Americans can't get excited about the World Cup: 2 games , 2 goals, 2 ties.....fun
Same could be said of baseball. It is fun when you get into it.
I ain't saying I am into it. But it is about a lot more than the scoring.
Ties would be a bit unsatisfying. But, yes, a 1-0 game with maybe 4 or 5 total hits can certainly be far more tense and exciting than a 16-15 game.
don is still out???
According to the Phillies pitching coach on the pre-game, Moyers has such longevity because he's so competitive and he never gives in.
Uh, yeah. Everyone else who ages and whose bodies no longer perform just didn't want it badly enough and they gave in.
Stupid.
Don still sick...
I knew there was a reason I was not good enough for the major leagues. I just didn't try hard enough.
Nothing seriously wrong with Don.
I don't care for soccer either, but you can put any sport down that way.
Nothing seriously wrong with Don
Just a chronic case of readingpressnotesverbatimitis.
I knew there was a reason I was not good enough for the major leagues. I just didn't try hard enough.
Yes, that was my problem too. Didn't want it badly enough.
World Cup is huge where we live. People from all over the world, flying flags from their countries of origins. And the inevitable Brit-Canadians saying that is disgraceful.
I'd love to play for the Red Sox, even for an inning, so maybe if I tell myself I REALLY WANT IT and refuse to give up, maybe I'll be making my debut in 2013 or so.
Don on DL with half the team. :(
Don't you know anything is possible if you truly believe?
Excuse me while I go vomit!
Did Beltre collide with Don in the cafeteria or something?
In my book with respect to professional sports (team sports, not things like tennis, golf, etc):
baseball > football > soccer > hockey > basketball
with baseball far ahead of all the rest.
Maybe I can "believe" all this fucking work in front of me is really located far, far away.
Nope. Still here. Damn.
The power of positive thinking can go a long way:
- applied consistently in the long term
- within reason
- except when it doesn't.
Put another way, the power of positive thinking doesn't do anything of itself. But it can help you make many small decisions that can help significant things to come about.
Baseball
Very, very distant second hockey
Enjoy women's basketball
Hate everything else. Hate football in every form, hate NBA basketball, hate soccer.
In Ireland I discovered rugby, absolutely loved it. People told me that was because we were watching it being played at the highest levels, the famed NZ All-Blacks. Apparently it is less than thrilling on lower levels. That's what many people told me, anyway.
I agree, Zen. Positive thinking is definitely helpful in many circumstances. If you have to work hard at something you want, keeping a positive attitude can help you get through it more easily.
I am looking forward to reading Barbara Ehrenreich's latest book, "Bright Sided", on this topic.
Moyer has the same birthday as Papi - but they're 13 years apart.
Mike Lowell at 1B, eh?
I find basketball excruciatingly boring to watch. I think that soccer and hockey are not much better as they are sort basketball on grass and ice, but since scoring occurs less often in both, there is at least something to watch whereas basketball to me could be reduced to the last ten minutes.
I don't really understand most of the finer points of football, but I can at least watch each play like watching each at bat. I guess I am the kind of sports fan who prefers a slower pace than a constant pace. Sort of the way I prefer to live my life! One day/step at at time.
I miss Fuck Yeah.
Everyone else who ages and whose bodies no longer perform just didn't want it badly enough and they gave in.
Plus they're soft.
basketball to me could be reduced to the last ten minutes.
I feel this way exactly.
Laura, that's a LOT of hate! What makes baseball so different for you? I don't hate the other sports, just find them uninteresting.
YES! VMART!
Plus they're soft.
But only if they're good-looking.
I am moderately enthusiastic about sports. I hate hero worship; I love the underdog.
Baseball on the other hand isn't sport - it's a theory. :)
Did Beltre collide with Don in the cafeteria or something?
LOL
I'd put things in roughly the same order that you did, Amy. I used to like football even more than baseball. These days, not so much, but during the playoffs, yeah. I can watch any sport if I try. I can remember watching whole rugby and soccer matches on occasion.
VMart. Yay.
Well, not hate in the sense that I hate Stephen Harper. Hate to watch. Have zero interest in.
Also, I can enjoy any sport live. I generally dislike/hate football, but if someone gave me tickets to a game, I'd go and enjoy it.
Yeah! Papi half dong!
Get yo swagger back Ortiz.
Wow. Tasty.
Baseball on the other hand isn't sport - it's a theory.
Baseball is an art, a musical composition, a ballet.
Perhaps Jamie Moyer is not trying hard enough tonight.
Doubles to spare
Moyer must not want to win this game very much.
Beltre owes us. He has fractured ribs to repay.
Baseball is life.
I never understand people who say baseball is boring. I liken them to people who say that reading is boring.
I still love Lowell.
DR DOUBLE DOUBLES!!!
Dr Dong!!!!!
DEAR DOCTOR!
Liking sports are mostly about what you grow up with.
I was just typing to ask the doctor to keep the doubles going.
Even better!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jesus.
The doctor is trying to get in two doubles every at bat.
I totally understand why people say baseball is boring, even though I find it anything but. The pacing is so different, the long gaps where it appears that nothing is happening.
Let's not blow a big first inning lead two days in a row, alright?
Liking sports are mostly about what you grow up with.
Which explains why most USians don't care about World Cup.
I always think of Moyer as having a tenure as a Red Sox. But he only played half a season for us in '96.
Liking sports are mostly about what you grow up with.
Not so sure this is always true. I grew up with no sports watching in my house. In fact, I think I was the one who started the family watching baseball when I became a Mets fan in high school. Although my mother says she was a Dodgers fan in Brooklyn, we never watched baseball as kids.
I never watched football or basketball either. My parents find my passion for baseball "cute."
Lowell hits the 502nd dong off Moyer.
I like most sports, except for pro basketball. i can not watch that.
1. Baseball
2. Football
3. Hockey
4. College basketball
I'll be watching USA-England tomorrow.
I grew up in a sports-watching family. My dad was a NY Giants fan and I remember taking the car up to a mountaintop to get radio reception for the games.
20 minute wait so far for lackey - thanks, eric.
Thanks, Jamie, for not caring tonight!
Jamie Moyer is not single minded enough, gave up commie pink 2BH.
Oh forgot I do HATE football marketing.
I guess it's like everything else in life---to each his/her own. I like the slow pace, the one on one between pitcher and hitter, the fact that unlike almost all other team sports, it is not about getting a ball from one end of a field/court to another, the beauty of its math and geometry, etc.
Sort of like some people like horror movies with lots of special effects and others prefer a slow moving character piece.
I also grew up without sports, but I think in general that observation is true.
My family also finds my baseball obsession "cute". My grandfather was obsessed with baseball and never ever shared it with me, because girls and sports don't go together.
It's possible to acquire love for a sport as an adult, sure. But when you have a Brit and an American in a bar saying, "But soccer is boring!" "But football is stupid because they keep stopping the game!" In that case, the answer is, "You like it because you grew up with it. Now shut up."
I find the strategy and technical aspects of boxing, or any kind of combat, fascinating. But as I get older I more and more simply don't enjoy watching people get hurt. I studied martial arts but have always been unable to watch UFC type things.
It's possible to acquire love for a sport as an adult, sure. But when you have a Brit and an American in a bar saying, "But soccer is boring!" "But football is stupid because they keep stopping the game!" In that case, the answer is, "You like it because you grew up with it. Now shut up."
Yes, that's what I took your earlier statement to mean. This is true.
Also, Amy and I both acquired our interest in baseball as teenagers, which is different than trying to love a new sport when you're, say, 40. I thought I might start following hockey when we moved to Canada, because I do like hockey. But I just couldn't do it - couldn't adopt a new habit in my life like that. There's just no room.
Doubles doubles doubles!
It's nice to be home
Weee, this is fun
The Monster is getting quite a beating tonight!
And James Sheilds is having trouble with the Marlins. TB down 4-0.
2 singles
5 doubles
1 home run
Make that 6-0 as the hyped kid Stanton hits a 2-RBI triple
oh wow this is excellent!!!
I can see what you are saying, Zen. And I may be the exception. But I never watched a football game (unless you count going to high school games to stare at cute boys) until the Patriots were in the Superbowl. I was invited to a Superbowl party, asked a lot of questions (so unlike me :)), and sort of found it interesting. So I did learn to like football as adult.
PAPI!
Um. This is getting into statistical anomaly land, isn't it, with the doubles?
Sox: "We were told BP starts at 7:10."
I've gotten into soccer just this past year.
Moyer: 1-9-8-1-1, 61.
Bogar held him at third!!
Bogar didn't have Papi try for home! And there was nobody out! Maybe he learned something??
"I am looking forward to reading Barbara Ehrenreich's latest book, "Bright Sided", on this topic."
You won't come away from the book imagining that wanting it bad enough ("dreaming") will bring it to you, though you will be horrified at the amount of that mentality apparently out there.
Fun read.
MrsGoTribe, we owe each other a coke.
Sox hit 12 doubles on July 29, 1990 against Detroit.
They have hit 9 doubles 4 times: 1927, 1931, 1993, 2003.
Sox: "We were told BP starts at 7:10."
Sadly, these days I read BP as standing only for the oil company...
Amy--Dr. Pepper for me, thanks!
I started playing soccer as a way to get past my extreme shyness at a xenophobic rural village school. As soon as folks saw I could do a fake behind the back double reverse they loved me; before that I was the city kid they we're afraid of - I think.
I remember watching Les Canadiens with my dad as a kid - then we moved to Ontario. I remember cheering for the Russians in '72 just to be a contrarian. The leafs do and have always (in my experience) SUCKED. Knowing the bussiness of sport as well, or maybe better than I know the professional leagues keeps me sober - no worship on any business franchise for this one.
I've no feed of the game except ESPN play by play, let me check...
9! nothing That Moyer just isn't trying hard enough!
Well, if we are going to be picky, I will have a Cosmopolitan.
Let's protect this lead, please.
Lackey blows this -- I say we void the contract.
How is talking to LBJ about his rehab going to help Hermida, given that LBJ is still on the DL?
"
Um. This is getting into statistical anomaly land, isn't it, with the doubles?
"
Yes very weird. Soon there won't be any left!
Did Beltre collide with Don in the cafeteria or something?
This got a chuckle from my husband.
How is talking to LBJ about his rehab going to help Hermida, given that LBJ is still on the DL?
Maybe he can tell him not to run around like an asshole diving and breaking new ribs.
You won't come away from the book imagining that wanting it bad enough ("dreaming") will bring it to you, though you will be horrified at the amount of that mentality apparently out there.
I doubt I'll be surprised, but horrified, yes. Reading Ehrenreich for me is always about getting more ammunition for what I already know and believe. I really like her work.
ESPN says
Boston this, Boston that, the list is 9 items long...
Then,
J Castro flied out to right.
S Victorino flied out to left.
P Polanco flied out to right.
..softy to the showers.
LOL, Benjamin!
Too bad we can't play at home all season.
The song on the Radio Shack commercial is a Passion Pit song. An up and coming band and one of my son's favorites.
He and some friends went to a Passion Pit concert one year ago and there were probably a few hundred people there. The band showed up in a van, pulling a UHaul. One year later (this past Tuesday), he planned to go again (same venue) and they were sold out. So, he emailed the band's manager and told him how he was a fan from the beginning. He and a friend were put on the guest list and were given VIP passes to meet the band. Very cool. Good guys. And a great way for him to spend his 17th birthday.
Rays losing 9-0.
Great story, Mrs. G. I, of course, have never heard of the band, but I like the story.
That's great for your son, Mrs G.
Not sure a band with a Radio Shack commercial is any longer "up and coming".
Hermida: "I don't wanna the mediots getting on me about being soft, so what did you do? I'll do the opposite."
D Pedroia flied out to center.
Finally! Thank god. Baseball was getting boring.
:)
My husband called Don Orsillo the "Ellsbury of the media."
Make Tito apologize!
MMMMMM, ribbies!!!
Linescore shows a troubling decline:
PHI: 000
BOS: 543
Okay, save some runs for the rest of the series.
I was just thinking that we needed some of these last night, but we actually needed better pitching last night so, never mind.
RUIZBALLA!
Pitches thrown in 3 innings:
Lackey: 39
Moyer/Herndon: 95
!!!!
Linescore shows a troubling decline
LOL
L--I'm surprised at how many songs from commercials are from not-too-popular bands.
Vizio uses Empire of the Sun
Radio Shack with Passion Pit
Amy-I would never know of these bands if it weren't for my son. It is fun to rediscover music with him. He also appreciates older music. He has the Beatles and Led Zeppelin entire collections.
another thing about soccer, the clock just runs , as a spectator you never know when it is going to end...
Live sports, Baseball will always be king, hockey is awesome live, football has some of the most obnoxious fans of all and way to many bad site lines.
I enjoy college basketball, the NBA is really only played for 2 months, in the playoffs....

Live sports, Baseball will always be king, hockey is awesome live, football has some of the most obnoxious fans of all and way to many bad site lines.
Absolutely agree. I was amazed the first time I saw hockly live. It's hard to watch it on TV after that. Football is better on TV. And yes, baseball will always be king.
I am headed to Chicago next week. While my son is standing in line for another concert (MGMT), I will be at Wrigley field by myself. I can't wait.
L--I'm surprised at how many songs from commercials are from not-too-popular bands.
I think those bands may be more popular than you realize. Just MO.
Isn't Jays pregame on or something?
Maybe, I guess they are just not mainstream or pop?
Yes, that is what I would say, not completely mainstream. But very popular, well known.
5430
Now that's a disturbing line score trend.
guy on first and the dp went 5-3 -- did they have a shift on?
"Jerry Remy did not face Warren Spahn"
more doubles, pls
doesn't look like remy faced phil niekro.
A- double play was Beltre to Pedey to Lowell.
Ah. 5-4-3 makes far more sense.
Way to go, GDGD!
This is like a spring training game now.
They just clarified that.
Clarify re Remy/Niekro
"Ugh, that's cheesy... I think it's brutal."
Remy <3
Well if the Phillies won't 'go' a little more than that, I'm afraid I must... .
Off to score the Toronto at Colorado game. It's been fun.
re trivia question/spahn. frede wondered if remy ever faced phil niekro. he thought he did. i (via b-ref) think he did not.
I knew that. I was clarifying what I was clarifying. :)
You: Remy never faced Niekro.
Me: They just clarified that.
Then I noticed a whole bunch of comments between those, thought it might not make sense. So:
Me: Clarify re Remy/Niekro
Whew!
remy does a promo and frede wonders if he wants to keep going. not sure what that referred to, but remy says he just does as he is told:
"when they say read, i read ... or i attempt to read."
Also Remy said he has 3 promos in front of him and is scared because he doesn't know which is coming up 1st.
frede: "old jacobs field days"

Lost in all of this offense is that Lackey is pitching a pretty good game.
Houston down to their last three outs, down 4-3
Must to avoid: Boston media as Manny comes to town.
Remy saying he is so excited about, can't wait to see Manny back at Fenway. Couldn't wait to see him leave either, and bad-mouthed him like crazy on his way out. Hypocrite.
of course manny cut damon's throw off - he knows damon has a noodle for an arm. saved him from being ashamed of a 27-hopper to the infield cut-off man.
OOF - it's BOOF!
And Boof leads off with a hit. Tek tells him not to worry.
2 pitches, 2 hits.
Was Bonser's father named Foob?
Will his ERA continue at infinity?
Bases loaded, no outs. Sound familiar?
Not sure this lead is Boof-proof.
I don't think this is doing anything to help his confidence.
You know it's Tim's birthday today.
wow -- boof is toast.
Oof, it's not boof-proof?
Troof?
Does he want to welcome Pap back with a save opportunity?
Holy Boof...
ERA now way down (from infinity) to 108.00!
It's the new Houdini! Whaddayaknow?
BOOFDINI!
Ha ha, bases loaded no outs and no score.
And Boof lowers his ERA from 108.00 to 36.00.
36.00 ERA!
Not bad. Not bad at all.
Boofdini? Oh no.
Hey, Boof's ERA is finite now! As soon as he got that 1st out, it became 108.00, and now that he's thrown a whole inning, it's down to 36.00.
Lackey: 7-6-2-0-3, 86.
Nice to see 0 BB.
Lucky son of a boof...
Many people figuring out Boof's new ERA.
Oops, guess I'm a little slow!
shoulda brought boof in for the 7th. if he finished the game, he could have gotten a save.
Unfortunately Boof's ERA has already risen back to 96.00 during the commercial break.
i was waiting for it to automatically adjust on the gdgd box.
I would like all the skateboarders and weed trimmers on my street to call it a day. You don't have to go home, but please don't stay here. Outside my window.
It is SO fucking noisy!
wait - have one of them whack our weeds.
During commercial break, ha ha ha.
If only. I can't believe people are doing that at 9:30 at night. Go home already!
Raining in Denver.
12-2 now I see.
Might be a different Boof.
Getting his post-career work lined up?
Weed whackers are noisy.
I KNOW! The guy next store has a small yard, but he does the whole thing with that buzzy machine. Imagine cutting your front lawn with a 8" piece of fishing line - I had to close my windows on a HOT day. :(
Five scoreless innings. Can't this team ever score runs?
I know. Our offense sucks.
Fuck! - no insurance run.
And then people hi-five the guy. Don't encourage him, people.
"I hope it was on sale."
