Well.
He was eye-popping in the field, but that's a lot of green for a guy with a career .684 OPS (and a .299 OBP (!) last year).
It sounds like the Red Sox were firm about not offering him anything more than one year. Plus, we got Cora and his three-year OPS of .672 for only 2/4.
We still need a starting shortstop. I doubt Theo can convince Julio Lugo to sign for two years -- Lugo would like four -- but how about 3/27?
If you're a glass half-full guy, you think the Red Sox do have a plan, AGon did not figure into it (otherwise they would have tried to extend him), they did not mis-read the market (although they may have to make an upward adjustment)and unless a trade is the plan, then it's Lugo. Since he's the best FA shortstop and just turned 31, 3/27 sounds about right--given the market. I don't like his inconsistent fielding, do like his bat, don't like the way he ended last season. I also don't like waiting around for last man standing (who, ironically, was AGon last year). So we'll go with Lugo.
ReplyDeleteIf you're a glass half-empty guy, you think, shit, Theo and co. are as bad at evaluating shortstops as they are at middle relief.
Would the sox or the rangers do , Michael Young - Manny , straight up?
ReplyDeletei'm praying we never find out.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to take pot-shots, guys, but who do you want at short that is readily obtainable?
