Q. What do you think about the team's chances to land Roger Clemens this season? How interested are you in having that happen? Have you reached out to him or his agents recently? How important would that be for the on-field product, and for him to potentially end his career where it began?Good lord, John. Maybe you say something the wrong way in an interview, but you typed this out. And I thought Steinbrenner was going soft in the melon. There were Red Sox fans who weren't too keen on Clemens when he wore a Boston uniform.
A. It's the perfect conclusion to his career. The return to Boston to fight for a final world championship. This is more than a dream scenario; it's a dream scenario that is a very real possibility. ... [I]f he comes, it will be for one reason: It will be for the fans who gave him a standing ovation the last time he pitched at Fenway, the fans of New England who love the game and adored him even when he wore a Yankee uniform.
Mattysox at Stabbed By Foulke is outraged. Although I don't agree with everything Mattysox says, I do share his disgust at the idea of the Return of Fat Billy. Just stay in Texas, okay?

Q. Did Curt Schilling consult you on starting his blog, or have you spoken to him about it? Do you read it? How often?
A. Curt doesn't need to consult with us on his outside interests, but he does. I'm sure I talk with Curt more than any other player. Curt has more to say than anyone else. It's a very interesting blog and very well done. We're both emailers and I have a blog as well, it just hasn't reached the surface yet by design. ... I don't think many people have found the domain name it resides under. But at some point.
As a kid I followed Clemens. He was my favorite player, until he left for Toronto. Then when he went to New York, he became my least favorite player. In short, I hated him. But you don't hate guys who aren't good. And there aren't many better than him.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see him come back to Boston, help us beat the Yankees, win the World Series, and have him go into the Hall of Fame wearing a Red Sox cap as one of the greatest pitchers ever.
Oops.. posted early.
ReplyDeleteAs for Henry, I think he's practicing a bit of selective memory. Clemens was cheared when he pitched in Fenway in his last season as a Yankee. At the time he was supposed to "retire." He's been booed a fair bit at Fenway too, but like John Henry, I like to think that most Boston fans, in their heart of hearts if not anywhere else, still love the old guy. I could be wrong, but thats what I think.
help us beat the Yankees
ReplyDeleteWhat makes anyone think he would do that? Emotions and personalities aside, I don't even want the Clemens of 2006 on my team.
Clemens was cheared when he pitched in Fenway in his last season as a Yankee.
To my knowledge, that happened only once, in what was supposed to be his final appearance in major league baseball.
He's been booed a fair bit at Fenway too
Nice understatement, that.
I like John Henry, but that was a really stupid thing to say. I hope this Clemens talk dies a quick death.
Hey - anyone know the URL of Henry's blog???
ReplyDeletesorry, john, can't hear you over the shouts of 35,000+ going ROHH-GEEERRRRRRR....ROHH-GEEERRRRRR...
ReplyDeleteExactly.
WHERE IS ROGER?
ReplyDeleteIN THE SHOWER!!!!
....
Remember Clemens's mother comment about Red Sox fans and her son?
"They treated him worse than Hitler."
