G36: Red Sox 6, Orioles 5

Orioles - 200 010 110 - 5 8 2
Red Sox - 000 000 006 - 6 6 3

Thanks to phrenile for the graph (which came from here).

And every writer's game story had to be drastically (and quickly) rewritten!!! (box)

***

Beckett was pulled after four innings (4-2-2-2-7, 64) because of "irritation to his right middle finger" -- an avulsion (tearing away of the skin), not a blister.

Kyle Snyder in -- and he's already made an error and allowed a run. O's 3-0 in the 5th.

***

Jeremy Guthrie (4.64, 92 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (2.51, 173 ERA+)

Lineup: Mike Lowell has the day off, so Kevin Youkilis (batting 6th) moves across the diamond to 3B and Eric Hinske (batting 8th) will play 1B. (Tito has the two regulars with the worst OBPs -- Lugo (.325) and Crisp (.277?!?) -- batting at the top of the lineup.)

Beckett will try to become the 4th Red Sox pitcher in history -- joining Babe Ruth (1917), Dave Ferriss (1945) and Roger Moret (1973) -- to get a W in each of his first eight starts. No Boston pitcher has won his first nine starts in a season.

Guthrie has pitched only two career innings against the Red Sox (April 27, 2006), allowing one run and striking out two in relief for Cleveland. Beckett started that game as well and did quite poorly (9 runs in 3.2 innings). Ben Broussard had 8 RBI, leading Cleveland to a 15-3 win.

  1. Yea, I'm not really understanding this whole put the two worst on-base guys at the top of the order.

Sure, they're fast, but that doesn't help too much when they don't get on base to use their speed.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Not sure why Youkilis would be moved out of the 2 spot in today's lineup.

Remy talking about how he does not agree at all with the thinking that Beckett was stubborn in throwing mostly fastballs last year.

Orsillo: "And you can understand his reluctance to change anything considering all the success he has had in the National League."

    Remy: "Exactly."

Being lit up start after start and reluctant to change --isn't that being stubborn?

    ReplyDelete
  3. We could've had Hanley. We could've had a player who mattered, instead of this garbage.

    God dammit.

    ReplyDelete
  4. yeah extra bases says injury of some sort. LAME. injuries suck;(

    ReplyDelete
  5. No, Beckett never belonged here. He wasted all of last season, and now he's back to the same blister crap as before. We traded for a player with mediocre numbers in he NL with major injury concerns, and we traded a 23 year old shortstop hitting .338 .419 .544 for the privilege.

This is why I hated this stupid deal from the start. Bowden or Buchholz should've been in this slot all along, and Hanley should be mashing at the top of our lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  6. sean yr kidding right?

    Sadly, no. He is not.

    ReplyDelete
  7. They are saying it is not a blister, fwiw. We'll see what happens later.

At least Sanchez is no longer being moaned about as another Hall of Famer we foolishly traded away in that deal.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Also for what it's worth: Beckett is 6 months younger than Papelbon.

The man is only 26 and can pitch, but he's not a robot.

    ReplyDelete
  9. No, but when we shit away Cla Meredith, Freddy Sanchez, Hanley Ramirez, Mike Gonzalez, Anibal Sanchez (who did throw a no hitter, and is incredibly young) and Andy Marte for close to no value, you wonder how the hell we are where we are.

This is why I didn't understand why anyone was putting faith in Beckett. You can't ever rely on him. Either he's injured, or ineffective, so why trade a plus plus player for his services? It doesn't make any sense now, and it didn't make any sense then.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hanely was in AA at the time with attitude problems. There was no way that anybody thought he'd turn in as much production as he did.

Josh Beckett was an All-star; a proven one at that. Yea, last year I hated it, but Beckett has made the necessary changes to get back into old form.

I don't know how you can criticize Beckett who has the best record in the majors and absolutely magnificant numbers.

The only reason you're against the trade is because Hanely turned out to be pretty damn good and Beckett had his career-worst year.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Bowden or Buchholz should've been in this slot all along

Wait a minute. Am I reading you right?

Are you saying that either Buchholz (who was in A ball last year and has made six (admittedly, amazing) starts in AA this year) or Bowden (who is in A ball right now) should be pitching in Boston in Beckett's spot? ... And then you mention Cla, who we obviously rushed.

you wonder how the hell we are where we are

24-11? 7 games up in the East??

    ReplyDelete
  12. No ben, the reason why I'm against the trade is because I was right all along. I said Beckett would have a 5 era, which he did, because going from a horrible division in a pitcher's park to a hitter's park in the best division is a major change.

As if this isn't enough, you have a player with major blister and shoulder problems. And we somehow want him on our team?

I would've rather had Buchholz or Bowden and Hanley (and Meredith, and Gonzalez...) than Beckett and Lowell. Or, with the money saved, we could've gotten a LAIMer for the last slot, and with the increased offensive production of Sanchez and Hanley, it probably would've evened out.

    ReplyDelete
  13. As I know you know, relief pitching can vary wildly year to year. Meredith has allowed 20 hits in 19 innings this year (4 walks) for a 3.32 ERA.

Sanchez: 43 hits and 19 walks in 30 innings.

Marte: .179/.222/.333 with a OPS+ of 50 -- making Coco look like Pujols thus far this year.

Every team has let players go they should not have let go. No reason why Boston would be any different.

    ReplyDelete
  14. and with the increased offensive production of Sanchez and Hanley

You are assuming they'd do in the AL when they are doing/did in the NL. And in the case of Sanchez, he's not doing much.

It's way too early to judge the deal at all.

    ReplyDelete
  15. redsock-
the problem is, we don't get anything in return. Suppan. Coco. Mirabelli. Beckett. Lowell's .320 OBP last year. Pena as a fourth outfielder.

These are problem signs, at least to me. Thank god we can spend $150m. Even if Hanley drops, say, .40 points, that's .300/.370/.500. Let's say a massive change of 60, .280/.350/.480. Still a huge difference over Lugo.

And, more importantly, all of those players have much greater upside than those we received. This is not good.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The deal shouldn't be judged after. You have to judge the deal at the time the GM made the deal with the knowledge and mindset he had at that time.

At that time, it made more sense to get Beckett. Yes, I understand he was in huge pitcher's park. I've brought that point up many times, but he didn't pitch every game at home.

The point is that at the time Beckett meant more to us than Hanely and Buchholz, who could easily have both become busts and still have that chance.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sean, Lowell's OBP was .339 last year. Not great, but 19 points higher than you claim.

You avoided mentioning anything at all about my "freaking great" ERAs re: Dice and Fat Billy, but could you answer this one: Are you saying you would rather be sinking or swimming with Buchholz or Bowden in Boston right now than Beckett?

I'm a bit surprised you'd be cool with Theo bringing up an A ball pitcher and thrusting him into the rotation.

Ben, you are right about calling a trade good or not based on the time it was made. (I meant something else and it came out wrong.) That's why I'll defend the Pena/Saturn deal.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Redsock-
You can't take that in a vacuum. I would rather have hanley at short instead of wifebeater, and either buchholz, bowden or a LAIMer instead of Beckett. With Hanley, that's 30.5m less for greater offensive production, plus another $16m for Youkilis instead of Lowell.

Plus, not for nothing, but are we forgetting Arroyo? If we don't dump him for a fourth outfielder, he's our #4. I'd take Arroyo, Youkilis, Hanley, Anibal and $40m over Beckett, Lowell and Pena in a heartbeat.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No, Beckett never belonged here. He wasted all of last season, and now he's back to the same blister crap as before. We traded for a player with mediocre numbers in he NL with major injury concerns, and we traded a 23 year old shortstop hitting .338 .419 .544 for the privilege.

can you not see the massive improvement he's already made this year in contrast to last? you hear it everywhere, but he has become a pitcher--not a thrower. he's just 27 years old on the 15th. and i would rather have a 27 year old starter with GREAT stuff and a bright future in the red sox rotation than a ss any old day of the week. pitching always means more, it always does. it's value goes lightyears beyond any batter you can stick in a lineup. it is more revered as well.

sorry, yr comments just stunned me lol. i thought everyone loved becks?! i mean he's fucking 7-0!! (ok 7-1 today) but c'mon!! ;p

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would rather have ... either buchholz, bowden or a LAIMer instead of Beckett.

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I can't say antyhing more than "Thank you" because I am dumbstruck by the idea.

I can only begin to imagine what Sean would be saying about Theo if he had brought up a guy who had yet to throw a pitch above A ball and stuck him in the rotation.

I'm confident that "He's still better than Beckett, now that guy's garbage" would not be one of his comments.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What about you redsock, or anyone else, would you rather have Arroyo, Hanley, Sanchez and $40m instead of Beckett, Lugo, Pena and Lowell?

Beckett's massive improvement seem to have put him on the DL. he uses his secondary pitches, he gets a blister. Exactly what we expected.

When he gets back, what does he do? Does he go back to throwing the fastball 90% of the time with a 5 ERA? Or do we get him for 150 IP with a 3 ERA?

Or, do we take advantage of Krivsky being an idiot and flip him for Dunn and EdE?

    ReplyDelete
  23. redsock, haven't I supported Youkilis, Pedroia, Lester, hell even freaking Tavarez? When we don't give up much to give a player, I can support them. When we fail time and time again to judge talent correctly and give up way too much, I have a problem.

    Plus, we'd still have Brandon.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm just catching up on this conversation now. Garbage?! Wow. This is quite unbelievable, even for our resident doomsayer.

    Bucholz, Bowden... Cla Meredith???

I keep thinking this has to be a joke, yet I keep reading, and it appears to be a serious discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  25. l-girl, you'd rather have Mirabelli, Lowell, Beckett, Lugo and Pena than Meredith, Hanley, Sanchez, Arroyo, Bard and 40 million dollars?

  26. What about you redsock, or anyone else, would you rather have Arroyo, Hanley, Sanchez and $40m instead of Beckett, Lugo, Pena and Lowell?

Nothing happens in a vaccum, as you said, so if one of those deals doesn't happen, it puts the certainty of the others happening in question.

I approved of the Pena/Saturn deal. Brandon was a league average pitcher. In 2005, he and Clement were identical. (We got him off waivers, so there's a good deal that gets overlooked.) I wasn't that keen about Krapler or Willie Harris as our 4th OF.

I approved of the Beckett deal (I would have dealt Hanley and Sanchez for only Beckett; Lowell's bat has been gravy).

I was lukewarm on Lugo, but there wasn't much else out there. I might have stayed with Seabass, but didn't he want 2-3 years?

And personally, yes, I would like $40m!

  27. I would rather have hanley at short instead of wifebeater,

By the way, we don't know what anyone else does with or to his wife, girlfriend or boyfriend. We only know about an incident that came out publicly about Lugo.

Any other player - or commenter - may have similarly disgusting areas of his personal life, or not. Let's not assume if you don't sign Julio Lugo, your lineup is free of abusers.

That's why when you're judging players' relative worths, it's best to stick to baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  28. l-girl, you'd rather have Mirabelli, Lowell, Beckett, Lugo and Pena than Meredith, Hanley, Sanchez, Arroyo, Bard and 40 million dollars?

Do I get to pocket the 40 mil? Because my job sucks right now, I could really use it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ha! I see great minds are thinking alike again. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Seabass! That's one for your nickname post.

    ReplyDelete
  31. But if they had listened to their lip service and gave a damn about the youth players, we would've had a cheap roster that's much better than the one we have. None of these moves were required, and I' not even going into the weirdass decision to go for Renteria.

If we went with what we have, instead of highly questionable, risky moves, we're in a much better position, and we're not forced into FA acquisitions.

If we're going to make moves when we have a damn good roster with upside, shouldn't we be 100% certain it will benefit us for the outlay? When we're not desperate, we better be very sure of the results.

    ReplyDelete

It's not a blister, unless the Sox are lying. Please get your facts correct.

Dunn fans more often than Pena. You'll be throwing a lot of shit at your TV if he's hitting #5. (He walks, but he also hit .234 last year (and .215 in 2003).) And he made 12 errors in LF last year.

When we fail time and time again to judge talent correctly and give up way too much, I have a problem.

Did you see Edes's piece the other day looking at some of Theo's deals? I should go back and find it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So what you are saying is that baseball teams don't always make the right decisions?

Well, I agree with you there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. From what SoSH is saying, the avulsion is the ripping of a blister. I'm going on the best news i've heard to this point, so let's not get passive aggressive, ok?

    Dunn career: .247 .379 .517
    Pena career: .260 .314 .478
    difference :-.013 .065 .039

    Pena K's every 2.89 ABs
Dunn K's every 3.00 ABs, so not a big difference.

For the record, I still like Pena, and that's why I have one of his shirts. If we had a position to play him, it would be a different story, but he's clearly not going to get 500 ABs, and Arroyo as a LAIMer would've had more value, imho.

    ReplyDelete

that's what i was thinking happened. i find it amazing that this situation hasn't been solved. i mean..has beckett seen kill bill vol. 2 yet? i think he really needs to get a load of uma skinning her knuckles over and over again trying to punch through wood. just suck it up, play through that shit. relish the pain.

this needs to be conquered ya know?

I know! Is there no medical or cosmetic technology that can fix this?

I can understand not being able to pitch effectively when the skin on your fingers is torn up, I have no problem with that.

But you'd think there's be a solution by now, maybe from the plastic surgery field. I mean, they make artificial skin for burn victims, you'd think they could shore up a blister.

Do you know if Uma can pitch?

    ReplyDelete
  47. HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!!

Please god post the WPA graph when it comes out. That is going to be a gigantic, gigantic spike in the 9th. This makes the comeback in the first Yankee game look like a 3rd inning rally.

The fuck we'll take it! Yeah BABY.

I was wondering if anyone would win the contest today. But no.

    ReplyDelete
  56. From tito:
Not a blister, officially, as a blister is fraying of the skin. One of the pitches just tore the problem finger, and that did it.

Going to be shut down for a few days to "dry it out", then they'll re-evaluate.

Francona needs a glass of water, and we have been unable to provide him with one to this point.

    ReplyDelete
  57. beckett:
has had this before, reacs better than blisters. 1). dry it out, then 2). toughen it up. not sure of timetable. Wants to make next start. Callous ripped off. Not sure of what caught it, but it seems to be from the baseball. curveball to millar that did it, fastball next pitch ripped it more, worse than he thought it was.

Left so he could deal with it immediately, so it doesn't become a monthlong issue. cut rest of skin off in the back, tried to bite it off on the mound (ed. note: gah!).

Most importantly: does not want to change anything in his approach, thank god. Still, it being the curveball is really scary.

not being kept out after he can throw all his pitches effectively.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Some great positive thinking from MFYFans: "Great news for the Yenkees, as this Orioles loss moves them into second."

MFYs are down 2-1 in the middle of the 7th at Seattle. They had two on, but Mientkiewicz just grounded into a double play to end that particular threat.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Sean - WPA graphs in realtime over at http://www.fangraphs.com/livescoreboard.aspx. Also, I think you're completely nuts in your assessment of the Beckett trade. Every pitcher - every PLAYER - is always an injury risk. You never know who's going to take a line drive to the shin or pull a muscle. Frankly, I'd rather have a great pitcher who needs to come out early every 8th start or so than a mediocre pitcher who can throw CGs but gives up 5 runs every time. Beckett gets blisters every once in a while... not the end of the world. I remember reading somewhere that it's a result of eczema and the med staff has come up with some solutions to treat the eczema to prevent (or at least greatly reduce) the blistering. I'm guessing that over the course of the whole season it won't be a huge deal.

Meanwhile... who says Hanley and Anibal would be tearing it up in the AL? Wasn't the NL-to-AL transition Beckett's problem last year?

I don't love every trade the FO has made, I don't think anyone does, but out of all the trades the Sox have made in the past couple years, this is not a particularly bad one.

    ReplyDelete
  60. And every writer's game story had to be drastically (and quickly) rewritten!!!

I was thinking of that! I remember a certain baseball writer I used to read saying, no matter who I'm rooting for in my heart, after the 5th inning, I'm just rooting for my story.

    ReplyDelete
  61. l-girl-
I was listening to XM about a year and a half ago, and some sports writer said he had already written the story for game 6 in '86, and was just watching the end of the game. After "it" happened, he had to hit his deadline, so he just changed every reference that was positive to the Mets instead of the Red Sox and shipped it off.

My guess is there'll be a lot of furious typing in the booth of the rest of the night.

I've heard that story too, though I'm not sure how a story could be written in such a way as to just search and replace.

Deadline -- I have a fax copy of the front page of a Maine paper that mistakenly printed the AP's early story, which had the Red Sox winning 5-3. Had 98% of it written after 9th innings, was just waiting to slug in the first paragraph, saw the two 10th inning runs and sent it on.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Allan, I insist you credit me for that score. As you can plainly see, I posted it several comments above yours, even though it's information freely available on the internet to anyone with half a clue. For future reference, I'm claiming Google.com too.

    Thank you.

Jackie: gallows humor, I assume. Another quote from that thread: "I can't believe they fired Lee Mazzili for this guy. How many breaks do the Red Sox get before they have to start earning their wins? And why can't the Yankees seem to catch a break?"

    ReplyDelete
  67. I've heard that story too, though I'm not sure how a story could be written in such a way as to just search and replace.

Yeah, me too. It doesn't ring true. Try writing a game story where you can do that. I think it's urban legend.

We're talking about a station where "clogging the basepaths" is heard at least 5 times a day. A sportswriter can say anything short of praise for hitler and get away with it.

I listen to the XM station just to be astonished. Last offseason they seemed to genuinely think we would start the season without anyone at shortstop or center. Just big holes and 7 people on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Brandon Morrow just blew a 97 mph fastball past a swinging A-Rod to end another two-men-on threat in the top of the 8th. Still 2-1 Mariners.

There's Exhibit A that a shit-arm reliever can become what people call an "ace closer".

  80. New York has scored 2 more runs than we have, but we have allowed 50 fewer runs. 50!

    Us: 198 - 125
    Them: 200 - 175

    Red Sox Magic #: 119

  81. NYY is also 5 GB of the wild card.

  82. I cannot believe they've scored just 2 more runs than we have. And Manny has, for all intents and purposes, done nothing. Same with Drew. Unbelievable.

And 50 fewer runs? I would love to know the delta on our bullpen innings.

That reminds me of my 2nd favourite song: "The Yankees Aren't Making The Playoffs". For folks old enough to remember such things, it's the flip side of the smash hit single "8 Game Lead," by my favourite boy band, The 2007 Red Sox.

  84. The officials rescored Lugo's play at first. Now it's an rbi single with an error on the catch.

I have "Bullpen Explosion" and "Steinbrenner's coming to town" playing myself.

  86. The Globe's photos are great. #1 and #6 are especially hilarious. (The first for most realistic cup on a shortstop this year.)

  87. Isn't Anibal Sanchez In triple A.........Would you rather have Beckett and Lowell or Ramirez and Sanchez???????

Are you serious .......Sean. I know , I am infatuated with you and all, but if you have the time, and you clearly do.take all your comments today out list them nicely in ms word.

March them into any local doctors office.......and ask nicely....Do you think I have lost my FRIGGIN MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Great win!!!!!

    And Happy Mother's Day !

  88. Ramirez and Sanchez. No doubt.

Ramirez has an incredible line, and they're both just 23. No doubter, Ramirez and Sanchez.

  89. I'm a little late to the party, forlornly departing in the 9th to take my dear old mom out to dinner. Thought the Sox looked deader than an empty bar on Sunday morning. Jolting shock when checking scores online. Just picking up the pieces now. So Hinske scores winning run from 2nd on dropped throw after grounder to Millar. Gotta be a better word than 'walk-off' for this. Anybody not thinking these guys will be doing this in October?

  90. Anybody not thinking these guys will be doing this in October?

I'm already putting in to leave work early on the weekends of October 20-21 and 27-28.

  91. 9Casey, thanks for the laugh. :-)

Uh-oh, does my laugh constitute a personal attack on anyone?

Woti, have you learned nothing from 2004?? Your mom only would have enjoyed the meal more after a Red Sox come-from-behind victory! (Well, she would have been hungrier, anyway...)

Anybody not thinking these guys will be doing this in October?

Maybe you will watch some of it in Mississauga?!

  92. Any idea if blogspot has an auto-ignore feature? Because that would really be awesome.

  93. Sean, if it did, no one would know you were there!

(Aw c'mon, someone had to say it!)

  94. Gotta be a better word than 'walk-off' for this.

We need one. Let's make one up.

  95. Looks like Manny sits tomorrow with hamstring tightness. Of the 5 games I'll have seen, Pena's started in 3 of them I think, with interesting results. At least the difference between Pena and Manny vs. the difference between Pena and Drew/Coco are drastically different.

  96. Actually, Mom's a Yankee fan. She got a big kick out me telling her that the Sox were getting shut-out when I left. She can read the scores in the morning paper. Looks like the next Sox visit to TO will be 'appointment viewing'.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 'appointment viewing'

    ???

According to ERA+, Sexy Lips (66) has been more effective this year than Mariano Rivera (58).

    ReplyDelete
  98. Okajima's ERA+ is 902.

God hismelf couldn't pitch better than that.

(By comparison, Papelbon's ERA+ last year was 500. Pedro's best ever season was 285 (that is the greatest season of all time). 100 is league average.)

  99. So, is Sean actually a Red Sox fan or not? I don't think I've heard one positive thing about this club from him, even though they've opened up this massive lead in the east.

I haven't been here for long, but the pure negativity by him is telling me that something's not right. Like clearly fans will disagree with things an organization does, I'm pissed off at the Bruins now, I couldn't even name more than a couple players. But they suck. We have the best team in baseball, and i havent read one good comment by sean about this club.

he puts down everyone, says we shouldve done this and that...this is just boggling to me because apparently, for the first time in history, hindsight is not 20/20.

i really dont think theres anything that the red sox could do to make this fan happy.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Tim-
Then don't read my comments. Simple as that. Since it is obviously causing you tremendous distress, just don't read them.

I'm sorry for shattering your little world.

  101. Sean, you have a tendency of littering them around. It's like asking someone not to step in dog poo, sometimes.

But if they had listened to their lip service and gave a damn about the youth players, we would've had a cheap roster that's much better than the one we have.

Yeah, and we would be called the Boston Devil Marlins.........
Tons of young and cheap talent...

Been there dude........remember all that wait till next year crap "we" red sox fans said year after year........

Those days are over maybe you and your naysayer ways loved those times when you couldn't talk to Yankee fans about your team cause they sucked...........

    I like these times......
Shit I love theses times ...going into every season knowing you have a shot.........

Screw Hanley, Anibal, Marte???Please,Cla Meredith we are arguing about Cla Meredith...we have right now the best bullpen on the planet and you want Cla Meredith......

I 'll go to bat with these guys... and you sit in your basemanet with your blackberry and laptop..and think of what could have been watching these guys develop and finish below .500 every year.......

And yes I am infatuated with you.....

    Sean also said:
Ramirez has an incredible line, and they're both just 23. No doubter, Ramirez and Sanchez.

For once in your life look between the lines......

And they are both just 23 .what does that mean we can win in 2015...
Anibell is in the minors and he pitches with the marlins......
Beckett is 7-0 and playing with the big club .......Anibell will be lucky to win 7 games in two years.......

What the fuck am I doin'...you will never get it..........

  103. Addendum to Tim's excellent comment:

And then when someone calls him on it, he makes sarcastic "wise" cracks ("I know you're obsessed with me..." , "Sorry for shattering your little world...") - or if it's me, accuses the commenter of attacking him - instead of addressing the substance of the post.

I'm not arguing with him anymore. I'm done. I only addressed him yesterday to ask what the hell he was talking about (something about not attacking people? didn't make sense).

It's like asking someone not to step in dog poo, sometimes.

    :-D

Very apt for us right now, as we are on Poop Watch with Tala. :)

  104. Sean's comments are ridiculous and negative. Maybe he needs a hug. Sweet win yesterday.
