G57: Athletics 2, Red Sox 0

Cy DiNardo shuts us down on two hits and six walks over six innings, the A's turn five double plays, and Dice gives up single runs in the fourth (Chavez HR) and fifth (Kendall leadoff BB and 2-out double by Swisher).

The key pitch of the night was to Youkilis with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth. DiNardo's 3-1 pitch was up and away -- which should have brought in a run, making it 2-1 and leaving the sacks loaded for Lowell -- but it was called a strike. Yook lined the next pitch to third, and Pedroia had to hit the dirt between first and second to avoid his shattered bat and was easily doubled off first. Inning over.

The Red Sox have a season-high three-game losing streak. Toronto scored six times in the bottom of the ninth to beat Tampa, 12-11, and close to within 9 GB.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.83, 93 ERA+) / Lenny DiNardo (1.80, 239 ERA+)

Redsox.com:
DiNardo threw the ball well -- 5.1 innings, four hits, two walks, three strikeouts, one unearned run -- on Wednesday against the Rangers but made one of two Oakland fielding miscues in the sixth inning, allowing the Rangers to score three unearned runs on the way to a 4-0 victory. It was DiNardo's first big-league start since Sept. 14, 2006 -- when he was with the Red Sox.

  1. I'll be there, all by my lonesome, Section 116 a little bit down the 1B line from home plate, Row 24, Seat 9, wearin' red.

  2. Have fun and don't do anything like the j***A** at the Toronto game that has been played on youtube.

Oh, look for Papi to go deep early again tonight.

Ugh, I know he was signed to be leadoff and all, but it's about time we stick him lower in the lineup until he gets that average and on base % up. My proposed lineup:
    1. DP
    2. Yook
    3. 'Tiz
    4. Manny
    5. Lowell
    6. Pena
    7. Tek
    8. Lugo
    9. Crisp

Get some speed at both ends of the lineup along with the big bats in the middle.

  5. Amen, brother. Though I'd go Yook-DP at the top.

    ...

I'll join everybody about the 3rd inning or so.

  6. If they were going to change it has to be Yook then D-Ped. No reason to put any undo pressure on the kid. I dont like Yook batting 5th . Just because he can lose AB's

True, and Yook did an awesome job leading off last year. I was hoping he'd be back there this year.

  8. MFY having a big inning...so far have put up 4 in top half of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

  9. Butt doctor in the game for MFY, time for a Sox comeback.

  10. ugh, i dont agree with that bunt if it was for a sac. the boys swinging the bat well and shouldve been looking for a base hit...plus if lugos still at first when papi comes up, he can drive it into a gap and score lugo from first...

  11. damn, this place is dead tonight.

  12. I am really starting to hate the fricking A's.

  13. i'm listening to eei because my comcast connection is screwy. i forget who this guy is calling the game (not joe, the new trup) whoever he is, he's bo-ring.

  14. Holy shit, how about those Blue Jays.

Scored 6 in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Rays.

And Coco's now made 4 outs in his 2 ABs. Not a good sign. Next time do everyone a favor and keep the bat on your shoulders, at least you won't GIDP and if you're lucky you might even get down to first with a walk.

  15. How bad is the pen for Tampa Bay? They lose to Toronto 12 - 11 after the Jays score 6 in the bottom of the ninth.

To reprise a saying from years past: Why can't we get good pitchers like this A's kid?

    ReplyDelete
  16. hey all. laura's gone to bed, so i'm back.

and the jays's 6th run scored on a bases loaded walk. good fun for the 17 loyal jays fans.

can we get a rally against cy dinardo?

  17. sox longest losing streak this year: 2 games

    April 6 to April 7
    April 23 to April 24
    May 30 to June 1
June 3 to June 4 (current)

    ...

for a month and 6 days, the sox did not lose more than 1 game in a row.

    gotta win tonight

we had a bases loaded walk. ump dozes and yook then GIDP.

    shit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. looking like its not our night.

    ReplyDelete
  30. NESN's "Sox Trax" shows that pitch #5 was indeed a ball. Plate ump has been pretty inconsistent tonight, too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That hurt. Dinardos getting the DPs tonight.

This Sox Trax thing makes the strike zone look tiny.

    ReplyDelete
  32. dinardo out on 89 pitches -- let's get to work!!!

    lowell single to start

    ReplyDelete
  33. lenny with the odd 6-2-0-6-0 line.

    ReplyDelete
  34. watch out for lizzie, coco!

    lugo can do it. right?

    ReplyDelete
  35. welp, looks like i gotta get out the axe D;

    ReplyDelete
  36. after 114 pitches, dice out for more (nesn says 113)

    ReplyDelete
  37. i have a really weird feeling about this one, i havent had this feeling all year...it feels like we won't be able to pull this one out.

maybe its the whole lack of hits thing or whatever, but this feels like an april dice-k game. like his first start in Toronto.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Remy said it last night: sometimes the second night is worse than the first after awful travel arrangements. They just look tired, not fired up like last night.

Still time though, it's only two runs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So I have a question: How do A's and Giants fans feel about each other? Is it a Mets/Yanks dynamic?

    ReplyDelete
  40. maybe its the whole lack of hits thing or whatever, but this feels like an april dice-k game. like his first start in Toronto

he's only given up two runs tho thru seven. realize it's us who didn't do shit against dinardo. which we gd well should have.

    ReplyDelete
  41. and that april toronto start. he pitched well -- lost 2-1, right?

dp-flo-manny-yook ... here come da runz!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dice-K pitched really well, 8 Ks and 2 walks through seven.

    ReplyDelete
  43. yep. tying run to the plate.

    we. can. do it.

    (obviously)

  44. kranmar's delicious marshall in for oak.

    ReplyDelete
  48. and that april toronto start. he pitched well -- lost 2-1, right?

Yeh, the offense was anemic 'cept for a Pena blast. Much like this game, sans the Pena blast so far.

Dammit they DP'ed up on DP.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dammit they DP'ed up on DP.

    haha yep. how dare they.

swisher catches manny's fly. gd it, we're shut out thru 8. WTF!

  50. i dunno. but if i lived there..i'd be a giants fan. hands down. love the bay...love their park. lol, and that's it ;D

this reminded me of that dave chappelle comment about san francisco...

"you're leaving san francisco - (gayish voice) 'BYEEE!!! COME BACK IN SEPTEMBER WHEN WE'RE HAVING A SALE ON BIRKENSTOCKS!' - get to the other side of that bridge, 'welcome to oakland, bitch!' *click* *click* (doors locking)"

  57. we lost. it sucks. goodnight. good luck. tommorow we win and the yankees lose. we'll be back to 12.5, don't worry peeps ;D

    ReplyDelete
  58. Probably the only Sox game I see this year -- very frustrating to get shut out. There was some good pitching by DiNardo and some good defense, but definitely a strong element of luck on some of those DP's and such.

I had a good time, but it could have been a much different game.

    ReplyDelete
  59. we will win the next two then it's NL paradise..;)

    ReplyDelete
  60. After the bad call to Youk, he grounded to third, guy stepped on bag and threw to first.

The Pedroia "hit the dirt" play was two innings later, on an Ortiz shattered bat. Ball caught and Dustin doubled off.
