The Break

No Red Sox baseball for almost 99 hours -- from the end of today's game at 4:17 to 7:00 on Thursday night when the Blue Jays visit Fenway.

Before G88 gets underway, I'll link to a first-half wrap-up I did for another website. I'm also going to try to finish the infamous Nickname post.

If you haven't entered the Papi Walkoff contest (see right-hand column), do it now. There are still 23 dates available: 2 in July, 6 in August and 15 in September.

  1. Make the nickname post specially available from the side nav so we don't have to hunt for it, please! I still only know about half of them. Oh, and it would be cool to note which ones you coined and which ones are in general circulation.

  2. Great ideas, Z/S! I second both.

And in the middle, a 3-day visit from his mother-in-law!

  3. The list is getting long. It includes nickname, player, and a little explanation/reason.

I also have a very cool post about intentional walks coming up.

  4. I'll add my vote to both. Can't wait to see the nickname post.

In other news, the odd ending time of today's game screwed up my scheduled recording of Don & Jerry and the Dice-K show. I'm recording both again (Don & Jerry tonight at 11:00 and Dice-K tomorrow at 7:30pm).

If your source missed the times too, I can get you a Quicktime move of either or both, just lemme know.

  5. move = movie.

Stupid fingers not reading my mind.

  6. Sounds like he got the Bloopers and will get the full Dice show tomorrow (missed the ending today).

    Thanks.

  7. I'm bored allready..........

anyone here any rumors of what Theo may do?

  8. the don and jerry show was pretty good....I did notice that 2007 had by far the most clips (i only got NESN this year, but i recognized a lot of the clips), so they are only getting more ridiculous....which can only be a good thing, right?

Looking forward to the Dice show tomorrow- thanks for the heads up on both of the replays, guys.

  9. No problem. I caught part of the D & J. It featured the pizza throw in left field (good times), and the Jerry air-guitar incident (also good times). Too much of "Sox Appeal" though.

Of course, any "Sox Appeal" is too much.

  10. Too much of "Sox Appeal" though.

So they turned one show into a promo for the other.

Of course, any "Sox Appeal" is too much.

    Agreed.

The big question is: did they include the lunar eclipse? That was their shining moment. For weeks, the camera would show the moon and Don would start giggling.

  11. I turned it on at 11:02 and I was seeing the tail end of pizza at number 9, but if it wasn't at 10, it wasn't there.

    ReplyDelete
  12. There were only 9. It's baseball. If they did 10, it wouldn't be sufficiently clever.

    No moon, unfortunately.

  13. If they didn't have the clip of Denis Leary and Lenny Whoever going nuts in the booth re Yook, Jews and Mel Gibson, then the whole show was a sham. I swear Don pissed himself!

Maybe the moon in Volume 2?

And they need to do - but will not -- a Sean McDonough/Remy clip show: with Crash making fun of fat kids stuffing their faces and ever-so-slightly emphasizing the word "cans" after Eric Frede interviewed a Sock wife about the annual Food Drive.

  14. re Papi walkoff:

Can I say that he won't hit one?

(I also put money on Don't Pass at the craps table.)

  15. Can I say that he won't hit one?

No. But it costs you nothing to guess.

If anyone wants to pick possible playoff games, I'll accept those too.

  16. Don't worry, redsock- that clip was featured and was probably the funniest one, despite the lack of beard on the then-innocent youk.

chief: whoops :P at least i didn't miss any!

  17. Sox Appeal: While I also have no interest in watching the actual show, Remy has done some great material referring to it, making fun of the people on their little dates. I'd just hope that during the show (which I missed last night), they don't actually put the little ad for Sox Appeal on the bottom of the screen WHILE they're making fun of the date-people.

As for the "picking no date" in the Ortiz contest--that came up before. I still say it should be allowed:)

Allan, if you let people pick playoff games, consider having people say "Home Game 1 ALDS" or whatever. Or else rainouts might screw ya. Like, in 2004 ALCS, I attended "Home Game 2." That should be Game 4. So, while I could go around claiming my ticket is from the Dave Roberts game, it actually was the 19-8 loss, since Home Game 1 was rained out, but Home Game 2 still happened the day it was supposed to. Hopefully this contest ends soon, though!

  18. Remy has done some great material referring to it, making fun of the people on their little dates.

Yes, they've made great sport of it. I also like Remy's reading of the participants' body language. He's much more adept at that than Don.

    If you think he'll go the whole year without a walk-off, then I don't want to hear from you! :>}

  20. I think the reason Allan should not allow "he won't hit one" is because the season is half done, and now we see that Ortiz is not walk-off happy this year.

To be fair, the person guessing that would have had to say that before the season started, or at least in April, IMO.

  21. Can you imagine Don on Sox Appeal?

This drink is gone -- down by way of my throat!

I like the way your face is framed by Vari--, I mean your hair.

At Fenway, it's 43 steps to the men's room at Fenway, while at Yankee Stadium, it's 67 steps. On May 23 to June 5, however, it was 58 steps.

I got here as fast as I could -- full bore!

    Outstanding!

I am not enamored of these prices.

(When the check arrives) Looks like we got the bad news.

  22. Can you imagine Don on Sox Appeal?

Expand it to "The Best of Hypothetical Don Orsillo in Everyday Situations."

Getting pulled over for speeding: "The officer is in the midset of a meeting with himself behind my car."

  23. "think the reason Allan should not allow "he won't hit one" is because the season is half done, and now we see that Ortiz is not walk-off happy this year."

That's why I said "this has come up before." Someone did want to guess tat when the contest was announced, and that's when the no ruling came out. I agree that now, even if you were the first to think of it, you shouldn't be able to choose the "no walkoff" option.

  24. Er, in the interests of full disclosure, it was moi who first picked Papi wouldn't hit one (because the odds of ANYONE hitting one on a SPECIFIC date are not calculable).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jere, yes, I gotcha. I think Allan didn't want to allow the possibility that it might not happen!

Love the Orsillo On Sox Appeal! If we do Orsilloisms in everyday situations, I'd better not have a full bladder. That is just too funny.

  26. Ah-ha! Woti is to blame!

Don't mind me, my mom is here and I've been drinking vodka coolers and red wine since 5:00...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Um, not that my mother's presence makes me drink or anything.
