G83: Red Sox 7, Devil Rays 5

Wakefield turned in another good start (6.1-7-4-2-2, 90). Three of those his four runs allowed came in the seventh on hits off Javier Lopez (who also allowed one of his own).

Manny Delcarmen put a stop to that nonsense and ended the seventh, then pitched a scoreless eighth, before Snuffer did some snuffing in the ninth.

Coco Crisp tripled and scored in the first, JD Drew doubled twice, Jacoby Ellsbury doubled and got his first major league RBI, Mike Lowell lined a two-run home run into the Monster Seats -- hell, even Doug Mirabelli singled in two runs.

Dusteaters Watch: Johan Santana and the Twins four-hit the Yankees 6-2 (Happy Birthday, Porgie!). Toronto beat Oakland 10-3. The Blue Jays are 11.5 GB, the Chokers are 12 GB. ... At 52-31, the Red Sox once again have the best record in MLB.

***

Edwin Jackson (6.88, 65 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.31, 103 ERA+)

I'm taping today's game, staying away from the Internets, and will treat it like a night game (without commercials). Have fun!

  4. Check out the Yanks' lineup vs. Santana. It is even less pretty.

    Go go, Coco.

  5. Mirabelli needed that; he was 0 for his last 8 and 1 for his last 13.

One can't help but start feeling the love for Ellsbury.

  6. Allan should be happy with the result. Lots of scoring from the start... giving enough back to keep some suspense about the outcome... and having the door shut in the end.

The Yankees lose. Toronto starts in a few minutes.

  10. Looks like Toronto is going to win. Lead is 11.5 over TOR, 12 over MFY. Interestingly, we had an 11.5 game lead over MFY after the same amount of games ... in 1978. We increased that lead to 14 games as of July 19, and then we all know what happened afterwards. Of course, the 2007 Red Sox already have as many saves as a team this year as the 1978 team did all year. We just win close games this year, and that's going to save us in the dog days of summer.

  11. Why is it that the number one team in baseball is never on national tv? I have to watch all the games on the MLB.TV on my laptop while sitting in front of my 56 inch HDTV. I would take the occasional break away update of worthless information to see the Sox on my TV. Why is baseball, America's game, never on TV. I think all the networks should be playing games everyday.

Goose Gossage led the league in 78 with 27 saves....

Different era. I would rather talk about apples and oranges..then ever see another reference about the 78 season....

I'm feeling some love, and a bit of lust, too. :)

Yes. The comparison is beyond useless. It's not interestingly, it's nothingly.

Wow, I always think how cool it is that there's so much baseball on TV. TBS, ESPN, Fox, whatever local station you get, plus the cable package. Granted, we hate all the broadcasts, but there's a ton of baseball on.

I guess you don't have cable.

I just noticed this. Why would you have a 56-inch HDTV and not have cable? That seems like an odd choice to me. And if you have cable, you have baseball. No? What am I missing here?

  17. 1978?

Why not 1482? Or 289? Or 37,890 BCE? Or 2026?

    It's all equally relevant.

  18. 37,890 BCE was when TCM got his first win, right? Torre was catching, iirc.

  19. By the way, A-Rod's put up half a Lugo (0-18) at the plate recently.

  21. assholes i have a cable service from verizon fios that does not have EI.
So I am left with the Dedgers and Angels local broadcasts and TBS and WGN with the Braves and Cubs or Wsox.
I am saying that ESPN or FOX should be showing more of the best team not the rest of them. And there is football on all day sundays nationally. Baseball? I want more national broadcasts of baseball on the networks. or we could be watching re-runs of law and order. Live sports has to be better for Television.

There's no reason to call anyone an asshole. I was just asking a question. It seemed odd to me, so I asked. Geez.

    No.

We'll win it all without him this year and we can win it all without him next year.
