An ugly, ugly loss. That's all I can say.
If you watched it, you know what I mean. If you didn't, there's another game Wednesday night. Focus on that one.
***
Leo Nunez (2007 debut) / Tim Wakefield (4.47, 100 ERA+)
RHP Nunez pitched with the Royals in 2005 and 2006, but never made a start. He's pitched at Fenway Park twice (August 3 and 4, 2005), allowing 5 runs in 1.1 innings.
On August 4, Nunez entered the game with two outs and the bases loaded. He gave up a bases-clearing double to Edgar Renteria. Then he walked David Ortiz and Roberto Petagine before surrendering a grand slam to Jason Varitek*. Nunez got Kevin Millar to pop out to end the 8-run inning. (Curt Schilling got the save for the 11-9 win.)
[Added: His long-awaited first career slam.]
Was that Tek's first career grand slam?
ReplyDeleteI think it was his first grand slam.
ReplyDeleteAnother first start for someone, but at least the Sox have faced him, and have 7 at bats against him.
Yup. #1. His only other one came on May 7, 2006. (Tek HR Log)
ReplyDeleteBTW, the disc arrived today. Thanks!
For the Royal starters tonight they are hitting a robust .184 (7/38) against Wakey. By far the best is Reggie Sanders who is 4 for 12 with 1 home run.

ReplyDeleteThat still makes me shudder.
Was Lowell trying to tag up & go to 3rd on that double play?
ReplyDeleteThis game is moving along about as fast as yesterday's.
yes he tagged up
ReplyDeleteBuffy vision would have loved that Butler double. Over Manny's head right at the base of the wall, if he had been playing deep would have been caught.
ReplyDeleteThe callers and everybody but John Dennis are Panicing on WEEI - The lead is only eight and here comes the Yankees, watch them go on a hot streak and win 10 out of 10 etc.
ReplyDeleteFreaking Red Sox fans!
I wouldn't say panic , but definetly concern , they are under .500 since June 1.......
ReplyDeleteThey have some issues to look at.
How are the Yankees a better team than they were all through the first half? How are we appreciably worse?
ReplyDeleteWe don't have to win the division by 10 games, or 8 games, or 6 games. We just have to win it.
And we will do so.
How are the Yankees a better team than they were all through the first half? How are we appreciably worse?
ReplyDeleteI didn't say I was in a panic, just that in the short period of time that I was listening to WEEI you had Yankee fans chortling and Red Sox fans in a panic, 1978 etc.
This is Boston fans we are talking about and 2004 did not remove a lot of the angst.
Of course it doesn't help when people like Glenn Ordway start off the shows with statements (and I am paraphrasing) like this:
Some one has to question the ability of this organization when every free agent sucks. Drew, sucks, Lugo sucks, Coco sucks. etc.
period of time that I was listening to WEEI
ReplyDeleteSee, there's your problem, right there.
every free agent sucks. Drew, sucks, Lugo sucks, Coco sucks. etc.
Of course, Coco wasn't a free agent, but, hey, I know facts are frowned on over there at WEEI.
