Alex Rodriguez may have already hit career home run #500, though according to his stats, he stands at #499. It all depends on whether he hits #493 tonight.
Whaaa???
MLB.com explains that if Slappy homers tonight -- when the Yankees finish their June 28 suspended game at Baltimore -- it would go into the record books as having happened on June 28.
Thus, his 500th chronological career home run would be backdated to #493 (he had 492 coming into June 28) and the seven home runs he has hit since June 28 would be bumped up, making #499 -- which Slappy hit off Kansas City's Gil Meche on Wednesday -- the "official" #500.
The June 28 game was suspended in the top of the eighth inning, with New York up 8-6 and Rodriguez on deck.
This suspended games thing is ridiculous. I mean, I understand where they're coming from and all - no point in having über-long rain delays (theres the ü again) but I don't see why they just don't call it - well, maybe I do. The O's do have a legit shot to come back in this one. I just think if I was a player, it'd be kind of weird. Hell, it's weird as a spectator.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they should have a mercy rule - if a team has a lead of 4+ runs then they should call it a day instead of suspending it. (or is there already a rule like that in place?)
Or they could suck it up and play in everything except lightning (and blizzards a la Cleveland-Seattle April). That would be interesting.
to further my final thought from above...
ReplyDeletejust picture the sox all muddied up and down by two in the ninth against MFY...game 7, alcs...steady strong rain has been coming down for a couple hours, the diamond is a complete mess...ortiz doubles in the tying run and manny comes up and hits a blooper to left. shemp is playing deep (because mannys apparently a complete idiot for playing shallow) and demarlo is waving ortiz around...the throw to the plate and ortiz makes a head first mudslide and hes SAFE!
red sox win, are heading to the world series - ortiz has mud dripping off his helmet and face, they all come in and do that big circle jump thing in the plate area and everyones just covered in mud and sweat and glory....it'd be amazing!
Not sure I want too many more head first slides from Tiz.
ReplyDelete...
I hope the O's come back in this one. I saw the very end of it in the pouring rain (like I have never seen at a game) and I agree with Melvin Mora that the umps let the game go on as long as possible to allow the Yankees to continue their rally. Right after CI broke the 6-6 tie with a single, out came the tarp.
Not sure I want too many more head first slides from Tiz.
ReplyDeleteAhh true. Well, what about Yook? he would fit into that dream well.
And Mora was ejected for bitching about it.
ReplyDeleteO's led 6-4 after 7. MFY were allowed to bat in the top of the 8th and score 4 times to take the lead.
How about Manny hits a gapper, Shemp and Noodle fall down, CI botches the throw from the outfield, and Manny wins the pennant with an inside the park HR, complete with 20 foot mudslide?

ReplyDeleteIt works. It just may be too believable...
Yes, the top of the 8th was played in a driving rain such that the pitcher could not grip the ball. Big asterisk rated here.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo.
ReplyDeleteI think Mr Peabody is one of Stewie Griffin's ancestors.
Oh. It's not a photo. It's a cartoon. Duh.
ReplyDeletewhat about the rule pre-78 where the score would revert to what it was at the beginning of the inning or something?
ReplyDeletethe return of tdcg! i've missed you in game threads.
