Somehow stymied by Steve Trachsel for six innings (6-5-1-0-5-2, 108), and trailing 3-1, the Red Sox bats woke up as soon as Baltimore went to the pen.
First it was Paul Shuey (Lugo walk, Pedroia single), then John Parrish (Ortiz RBI double, Manny BBI) and Chad Bradford (Yook 2-RBI double, Lowell 5-3, Varitek RBI single). And "just like that", the Sox had their first lead of the game.
Jeemer allowed a solo shot to Tejada with one out in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-4. No problem. Papelbon used 12 pitches to get the Birds in order in the ninth (6-3, K, K) as Gagne warmed behind him.
Pedroia had three singles and a sac fly, Ortiz walked twice and doubled, Varitek had two singles, and Crisp walked four times, one intentional.
P.S. How is it possible that the insipid "Sox Appeal" is only debuting tonight? Hasn't that piece of crap been on the air for like four years already?!?!?

Steve Trachsel (5.26, 84 ERA+) / Julian Tavarez (5.08, 89 ERA+)
Eric Gagne is available tonight. He's now wearing #83.
RedSox.com:
Trachsel looked very hittable -- again -- in his last start, continuing his troubling trend of poor performances. The veteran righty lasted only 4.2 innings and surrendered five runs -- including two homers -- on seven hits to the Rays. ... Over his last six outings, he has a 9.23 ERA ...
I take back what I said about Drew PHing in the 8th or 9th yesterday. Turns out he was in a hospital with his son...might not be in tonight's game either.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Drew is not even at the park.
ReplyDeleteLugo ss
Pedroia 2b
Ortiz dh
Ramirez lf
Youkilis 1b
Lowell 3b
Varitek c
Crisp cf
Pena rf
I was reading an old article, literally 5 minutes ago, about JT Snow wearing 84 for the Sox. And then I come here to see Gagne will wear 83. Crazy. Yet awesome. I love high numbers in baseball. Especially 80s.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's* talking about how 83 is the second-highest Sox number of all-time. (Snow 84) But former bullpen catcher Jason LaRocque wore 88 in '05 and '06. So, 83 is the second-highest player number, but the third-highest overall. As far as I know. (And I just wrote about another Sox bullpen catcher today. So you see how it all comes around.)
ReplyDelete*like, four people
The schedule Jere pointed me to says I'm getting NESN on EI tonight (and tomorrow). We'll see if it's accurate.
ReplyDeleteIf it's not, the Jays are playing this afternoon, so Rogers may show NESN.
Manny vs Traschel - 9 for 11 with 3 triples!!
ReplyDeleteLowell - 10 for 29 with 2 2b's and 1 HR!!
Manny has hit triples in his career? I thought he didn't run out any balls!

I hope everthing goes well, and good job by the Red Sox trying to keep this a personal matter and letting him be there.......
Well, that EI schedule is a piece of shit.
ReplyDeleteSays NESN and gives me not-NESN (Bloody Sock Thorne and Jim Palmer).
Booooooooooooooooooooo!
Shit! Really wanted a scoreless first...
ReplyDeleteAnd crappy about the schedule.
ReplyDeleteAnd that Millar double. Jesus.
Lugo pisses me off more often than not. It's like he's never on the same page with me, the rest of the team, or his own brain. Another first pitch out.
ReplyDeleteNice single by Pedro, Iowa, population 15. See, I can't do a glossary because my nicknames change too much and are way too hard to figure out to the point where no one would actually say them out loud:)
ReplyDeleteAny lies from Thorne yet?
I love that play! Shift on, walk, get to second and just keep going...
ReplyDeleteCrap. We're pulling a "last night" already.
ReplyDeleteMLBTV has NESN so we are watching in the backyard on my laptop.
ReplyDeleteChi-Pod triples in a run off Pettitte. 1-0 CWS.
ReplyDeleteAnd if Manny doesn't get the ball stuck in his glove, the guy's out at home. Shit cubed.
Oh my lord. I don't wanna know what Thorne's saying about Manny right now.
ReplyDeleteDown in Texas, Kason must be having rather mixed feelings at the moment.
ReplyDeleteWhat is up with this red sox team of late ...all these first pitch swingers.......
ReplyDelete4 of 13 first pitch swingers so far tonight.
ReplyDeleteRe: Kason, heard Theo's interview on WEEI this afternoon. Praised Kason highly and how hard he had worked.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that the Sox told him that he would have been sent back down to the PawSox when Schilling came back which would be the bitter sweet for him.
Fourth inning in a row (all) Tavarez has gotten the first two, then not gotten the third.
ReplyDeleteWe're making Steve Trachsel look like Steve Young.
ReplyDeleteOr something.
Yanks with 11 HR in their last 12 innings. This is getting out of control.
ReplyDeleteThat was a smooth 6-4-3, nice range by Lugo!
ReplyDeleteFreakin' Peiryieyeirsyynski swings at the first pitch, ends inning, with bases loaded and down 6-1.
ReplyDeleteOk, so you can play some defense, now how about some freaking offense!
ReplyDeleteLowell's punch to Millar's ribs is about the hardest we've hit them all night.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile Theo is sitting in his Box and thinking "maybe including Delcarmen for Dye wasn't as much as I thought?"

Thats what we need a .232. hitter with .292 obp.
Now , thats what we need
ReplyDeleteCmon Yook , break it open , your due......
ReplyDeleteJune & July Dye had 9 HR and 24 RBI's with .468 slugging and he struggled the first half of june.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, his 19 HR's would lead this team.
Thats right........whos warmin up?

ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, his 19 HR's would lead this team.
So would his 71 strikeouts
Actually it would be Tek (72), Dye, Ortiz (69), Manny (66) and Drew (66).
ReplyDeleteOr basically about the same as everybody else!
Pap in, Gagne warming.
ReplyDeleteYou have to think he is just getting in some work, since he hasn't pitched since the 24th. At least I hope that is why!
ReplyDelete95 on first pitch that's good.

Gameday has 92 ...Are those guns ever right?
Could be different guns. So far he's maxed at 97 (foul), lowest 94 on fb's. Split has been 88.
ReplyDeleteNice W.!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable--no postgame because of the premiere of Sox Appeal.
ReplyDeleteWTF - no extra innings? No press conference's? No Hazel? No Tina? No Eck?
ReplyDeleteNope, just Sox Appeal.
ReplyDeleteNESN is so stupid. Do they really think their viewers care more about a so-called reality show than post-game?
ReplyDeleteI like how Don's promos said, If you're just tuning in, Sox Appeal will start in 10 minutes. Like people who don't watch the game are turning on NESN for Sox Appeal?! How many people do you think did that tonight? 3?
Cool comeback win, tho. :)
ReplyDeleteYOOOOOOOK
Figure skater picked the right girl, even though she's a yankee's fan!
ReplyDeleteNow I want my Eck!
I'm not a Sox Appeal Fan...not when it takes the place of the post-game show. In fact, come to think about it, not EVER!!!!
ReplyDeleteGo Timmy...1pm today (Thursday). And then westward ho! With Curt on Sunday. My goodness! It's always great to be here.
And I wish JD well with his family stuff.
ReplyDeleteI checked out Sox Appeal, since they force fed it to us last night, it was OK. No it hasn't been on forever, just the promos for it have been on for a long time time.
ReplyDeletewhat? no schadenfrude today?
