G118: Red Sox 3, Devil Rays 0

Wakefield (8-2-0-2-6, 100) started this gem off with six no-hit innings. Snuffer pitched the ninth, walking one and striking out two.

Lugo came through in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4. He singled in the first and scored on Ortiz's double to dead center. That was the game's only run until the seventh when Lugo singled after Mirabelli and Hinske had walked with two outs. Lowell drove in Manny in the eighth.

Of Wakefield's 100 pitches, 72 were strikes. He went to three balls on only two Rays -- the two guys he walked (Iwamura in the 4th, Navarro in the 6th). Wakefield threw a first-pitch strike to 21 of his 27 batters.

It's Boston's 10th shutout of the year, tying them with Seattle for the most in the American League.

he is on a bus...the short bus, evidently.

  7. Hinske or WMP? Cora I don't understand.

Shields has never pitched at Fenway! Let us hope he feels the wall and goes mental by the third inning.

Well, if they're proud of being the second place team with the biggest games back then that's their own complex.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Or you could've reminded them about the "other" four. 4 in '04.

  12. From Extra Bases:

" Sox groundskeeper Dave Mellor has outdone himself.

In centerfield, Mellor has mowed the lawn into the shape of the Boston Red Sox "B" and has placed it inside a patch of grass shaped like home plate. Pretty impressive. "

    Sounds cool...I wanna see this.

    Fucking right it's on. :)

  14. My virgin ears (or in this case eyes). Am still waiting to see the B in CF.

WEEI - all the hosts today were of the belief that Buchholz will be starting one of the games on friday.

Anything less than 5 and 2 on this homestand is unacceptable.

Is the sky falling? Tom Caron of NESN wants to know.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Personally I think the B in CF looks anemic. I wanted to see a big freaking one that went from 2b to the triangle.

  30. Inning over in duh Bronx. At least the Yankees will have to face Bedard this series. For once the best pitcher for an opposing team will pitch against them. EH looking smooth in RF.

  31. Just saw on NESN that Comcast in Waterbury got NESN. Does this mean 9casey gets the games now? (Sorry if you've talked about this before, I was away for three days. In Baltimore, of course.)

Congrats to the people of Waterbury. That's what I was talkin' about. Since you're in NESN territory, you always have at least a chance of getting NESN. Fairfield County: Still screw-ewed after all these years....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Remy says he actually batted 3rd once.

Actually, he started 6 games in the 3 hole, all in 1975.

    Was 6-for-23, .261.

    ReplyDelete
  33. JERE - Are you the one who keeps on seeing the Bot Blown Saves?

    ReplyDelete
  34. "For once the best pitcher for an opposing team will pitch against them."

You're right. But when a Sox fan caller brought this up on the FAN the other day (as I was driving through), he was passed off as a "crying Red Sox fan with nothing else to complain about."

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sean was the Papelbon blown saves guy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ok- thought it was you. Don't blame me for any rants you see about you then! (j/k)

    ReplyDelete
  37. The only game he pitched in this weekend was the only one I went to, and he didn't blow it anyway, so I don't know what you're talkin' 'bout. I was wondering what happened to Sean, though....

    ReplyDelete
  38. We all know Coco gave Tina the flu, right?

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Just saw on NESN that Comcast in Waterbury got NESN. Does this mean 9casey gets the games now? "

Yup, he announced it yesterday in a thread somewhere. The bestest part (to me) is Comcast said it was customer demand (pressure)!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Maybe it was Sean we were thinking of. We couldn't remember who kept seeing the blown saves.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oops Jere said that already (re Sean), I missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "The bestest part (to me) is Comcast said it was customer demand (pressure)!"

And I'm happy for them. But just makes it even sadder that one entire section of New England with lots and lots of people could all stand at the door of Comcast at once, and there'd be nothing they could do, until mlb changes the territory lines. (Hint to mlb: Make the dividing line for people who get NEW ENGLAND Sports Network the border of NEW ENGLAND.)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Betamint just hit a 2 run homer in the bronx.

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Manny either has to cut the hair or clean the helmet."

Why, did we trade him to the Yanks?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thats it, the PIP goes off. Will only check between innings.

    ReplyDelete
  49. And I'm happy for them. But just makes it even sadder...

MLB has nothing to do with the cable company offering NESN in FC. Its all about the greenbacks.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "MLB has nothing to do with the cable company offering NESN in FC. Its all about the greenbacks."

MLB and the teams set the territories where each team can be seen. It has nothing to do with the cable companies.

    ReplyDelete
  51. All they'd have to do would be to add NESN to Fairfield County. Not asking to take YES or SNY out. Just let NESN in as well.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wake looking good: 4-0-0-1-3, 49.

    NY 4-3 after 2.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Sox want that territory, but it's set up so they can't get it, as it's only part of Mets and Yanks-land.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The territory is for the over the Air stuff, Cable is a different animal. Unless that is in writing somewhere official I will politely disagree.

Comcast does not want to pay NESN the $2.00 per subscriber in FC, especially since they are paying that amount to the METs and YES.

    ReplyDelete
  55. http://www.boston.com/sports/nesn/aboutus/FAQ/

That's NESN's FAQ. Read the first answer. Fairfield is not considered part of their territory, despite being in New England.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Why, did we trade him to the Yanks?

Between the pine tar, doo-rag and hair... stuff he's has to be carrying like 5 pounds of junk on his head. That's gotta screw you up.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  61. No blowing out in NY. Birds down only 5-3.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Papi's taken some really nice swings tonite.

    ReplyDelete
  63. there goes the no hitter.

    damn.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I blame Castig and Remy for that hit, talking about no hits at the end of six is a sure way to blow the game.

Shields, first time he has ever pitched six innings vs the Sox.

    ReplyDelete
  65. NESN ruins another no-hitter, at least for me--because the non-CF cameras are a tiny bit behind the CF one, so you could tell by Orsillo's voice when he said "right side" really loud, that it was headed for the hole. Maybe only people with me with Spidey senses or whatever are affected, but it really stinks. (In the Schilling one, you could hear Orsillo say "through" before we saw it get past the fielder.)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think it was Babe Ruth's spirit. That guy still doesn't like us.

Or a good hitter got a hit.

    One or the other.

    ReplyDelete

  95. Hell of a game.

    Let's go, O's.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm sick of Betemit repeatedly becoming a true Yankee!

Yeah, for real. Two weeks ago I was super psyched that we picked up Gagne and the Yankees traded away relief pitching for slightly more offense. And look how well that turned out for us.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Ooh, I like The Hut. (Eventually I will just start calling him Pizza, but all in good time)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hut 1, hut 2, hut 3. Terrible job, O's. Hopefully Torre thinks this guy is the shit and assumes he can do this every time and it ends up hurting them.

    ReplyDelete

Tito: "About the same as the last one. They're usually about the same."

    Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Guess they don't wanna bunt now, what with the tying run at 1st and no outs.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Swinging sac bunt gets Mora to second.

You can cough it up, Fruitbat, you know you can.

  121. Mo shitting the bed like he did yesterday. Not exactly as "money in the bank" as Sterling says he is.

    ReplyDelete
  122. 1st blown save for Mo in 20 chances.

    ReplyDelete
  123. he's like money under the mattress, but with the door unlocked with a big sign on it that says the money is under the mattress.

    ReplyDelete
  124. 1st BS for Mo since Apr. 20 against... hmm... can you guess? Heh.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Seriuosly, Mo is the best vs. non-Red Sox teams. That should go on his HoF plaque.

Of course, yesterday he got credit for a save, but look at what he did.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Let's go O's!

I'm nervous w/ Bradford in there, not gonna lie

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oh Chadford, what are you doing? Please to be inducing a double play now kthx...

    ReplyDelete
  131. well that puts a damper on things. kind of.

    still, awesome win tonight

  132. America loves Giambi?

Which part of America? New York, I'm guessing?

    ReplyDelete
  133. wait, who loves Giambi? He's sweaty and terrifies small children.

    ReplyDelete
  134. we win -- and they can't get any closer. simple as that.

    magic number -- 41

    ReplyDelete
  135. Yes, people think he "manned up" by admitting "something." Do you see people protesting Giambi's games like they did Bonds?

    ReplyDelete
  136. So was it a liner off glove or grounder or what?

    ReplyDelete
  137. grounder. If he comes up with it they might still be playing.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Gameday still hasn't put the run on the board. Are they writing out a treatise about the run-knocking-in off-pitchers'-glove ability of Jeter? Lemme guess: It can't be taught?

    ReplyDelete
  139. well, Giambi isn't chasing the all-time HR record... I think that's the real difference maker there.

    ReplyDelete
  140. "well, Giambi isn't chasing the all-time HR record... I think that's the real difference maker there"

Oh, okay. So it's okay, then. The 2003 ALCS meant way more to me than any individual record, but that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Gameday finally says "fielder's choice" to Roberts. I guess it went off Bradford's glove and over to Roberts who couldn't do anything with it. Well, you can't teach that, either.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Was a weaaaaaak ground ball and once it went off bradfords glove, it went like five feet. no chance for roberts.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Nice blog folks. I love the Sox, although just yesterday I said I wasn't going to watch baseball for the next 2 weeks. That lasted 0 days. Nice win tonight.

I know you are more likey pissed off about the hit then the steroids, My ,and I empasize my, disdain for Barry Bonds has nothing to do with the color of his skin......And if 2003 still ticks you off how about '88 Canseco and McGwire had 4 hr's in that sweep...

    ReplyDelete
  145. just yesterday I said I wasn't going to watch baseball for the next 2 weeks. That lasted 0 days.

    Welcome.

There's plenty of nights from November to February to not watch baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  146. There's plenty of nights from November to February to not watch baseball.

...you've got that right RedSock. I can't stay away anyway. But lately, it's been keeping me up at night. I try hittin' the wife to relax a bit, but she don't play that.

    ReplyDelete
  147. 9 Casey....did Bonds admit to using under oath?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Oh, okay. So it's okay, then. The 2003 ALCS meant way more to me than any individual record, but that's just me.

Hey, I totally agree with you about the ALCS (or that gem Wakefield pitched against RJ in 2005 that we lost 1-0 on a HGHiambi HR) meaning more to me than the HR record. But Giambi is, I think, unilaterally reviled among Red Sox fans (and A's fans, for that matter).

Elsewhere in the country, I think people care less about the 2003 ALCS ;) and more about the record. I still don't believe that people particularly like Giambi, but they don't actively hate him because he's not in their faces, destroying Precious Records and the American Way of Life. Or whatever it is that Bonds is doing.

    ReplyDelete
  149. It's my understanding (which could be faulty) that Bonds has not admitted knowingly using anything.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Jere - About Aces -
Sox have faced the following 4 times this year - Halladay, Pettitte (5 if you count relief).

3 times - Wang, Trachsel (only pitches like an ace against the Sox), and Ohka.

    Yankees - 4 times nobody
3 times - Schilling, Wakefield, Garland, Kazmir, Contreras

Only Kazmir would count as an Ace, and the Sox will face him for the third time tomorrow.

Meanwhile - no CC Sabathia, Santana 1 in two series, etc.
Yes I know I am retentive about some things.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I didn't think he had admitted anything either. Didn't Schilling comment that he cheated on his wife and his taxes?....I think that is the only proven cheating that he has done.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Bonds admitted to using the cream and the clear, which are none steroids.......

    ReplyDelete
  153. If it had been proven he cheated on his taxes, wouldn't he be paying big time fines or something? Has that happened?

Also, cheating on his wife is not against the law. (But I do believe he is the only MLB player to ever sleep around, so ....)

    ReplyDelete
  154. The only thing he's guilty of as far as I can see is not kissing the media's ass.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Gotcha Casey. I thought there was some technicality there with the Clear/Cream stuff. Did he end up saying that he didn't know they were steroids? Tomatoes...Tomah-toes.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Bonds admittance was that he thought the Clear was Flax Seed oil. etc.

In other words, they told me it was this which was ok, later I found it was steroid.

As for the Wife, comment by Schilling - His quote was "well, he admitted to cheating on his taxes and his wife"

    ReplyDelete
  157. Bonds admitted to using the cream and the clear, which are none steroids.......

    Link?

Again, I don't follow this very closely because I don't give a shit, but I thought he said he may have used them, but did not know exactly what they did (uh-huh) or something like that.

AgGain, you might think this is bullshit, but he is techincally not admitting knowingly using roids.

  158. In other words, they told me it was this which was ok, later I found it was steroid.

    That sounds right.

As for the Wife, comment by Schilling - His quote was "well, he admitted to cheating on his taxes and his wife"

Wasn't that in a book on Bonds and not an actual admission in public?

  159. When is MLB (and other leagues...NFL) just going to start f'ing testing for 'roids, HGH, etc.? Are they that worried that their "product" will be de-valued?

  160. Of course all of this admittance is also "leaked" GJ testimony. Let me see the transcripts!

I also agree with Sock - I really don't care, the hypocrisy by the owners and the players on this issue makes me want to puke.

Leaking them was illegal, as well.

AgGain, you might think this is bullshit, but he is techincally not admitting knowingly using roids.

Correct..........I beleive he saying if you think this is true , build your case and come and get me..........which I think they are doing...Balco ran their business somewhat like bookies with strange notes and unclear markings on calenders so I believe it has hard for them to make the case..........All the while his buddy Greg Anderson still sits in a jail for contempt of court of charges, I believe he has been in jail for 6 months....

  163. R-diddy - NFL has been testing for years for Steroids. Once abuse was linked to health issues the Union and the Owners got together and hammered out a deal.

Remember last year there were a couple of suspensions for roid use including the LB for the Chargers.

  165. Recent quote from Jim Bouton, author of ball Four: He said in his day (1960s) if someone had come along as said "take this, you'll win 20 games but it will knock 5 years off your life", pitchers would have stampeded to use it.

He also talked about him and Whitey Ford rubbing some drug for horses shit on their arms. I know you know this, but this shit ain't new.

  166. Not for sure about where Schilling got the quote - I was just stating what Schilling said on WEEI.

As for the leak, yep, it was illegal.
