G127: Tampa Bay 2, Red Sox 1

Red Sox LOBotomy:
122 121 212 = 14
It took Boston four batters to get their run in the fourth: Pedroia HBP, Youkilis double, Ortiz BB, Lowell L7 sac fly. After scoring the run, Pedroia left the game with an injured left elbow.

Dice had a one-hitter going with one out in the sixth when Upton cranked a two-run shot to right. So the Red Sox had three innings against the Rays bullpen to get one run.

7th: Youkilis K, Ortiz line single to RF, Lowell P4, Drew line single to LF, Varitek K.

8th: Crisp P6, Kielty L3, Lugo double RF corner, Cora K.

9th: Youkilis PF5 (1st pitch), Ortiz BB, Lowell L9 (replay showed Young trapped it, no argument from anyone), Drew ground single to center, Varitek F7.

Francona will never pinch-hit for Varitek, but I would have loved to see Manny hitting there. Varitek was useless tonight (0-for-5): foul pop to catcher, groundout first to pitcher, strikeout swinging, strikeout swinging, fly out to left.

Evan Brunell wrote today about The Fall of Jason Varitek.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.79, 119 ERA+) / Edwin Jackson (5.69, 80 ERA+)

Manny off tonight.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Kevin Youkilis, 1B
David Oritz, DH
Mike Lowell, 3B
J.D. Drew, RF
Jason Varitek, C
Coco Crisp, CF
Eric Hinske, LF
Julio Lugo, SS

Big Daddy Vladdy!

(i hate the angels announcers)

allan said...

Is that a

PASSEDBALLA

I see?

Rob said...

I haven't heard the Angels announcers. I'm listening to the Yankees announcers. I live in southern Maine, and for some reason there is an AM radio station (1270-WTSN) which serves seacoast New Hampshire and southern Maine that carries all of the Yankees games. And it happens to be the best station in the area in terms of reception.

There's actually a local commercial during the games where the guy says, "When I'm not listening to the Red Sox games, I listen to the Yankee games on this station and root for whoever they're playing against." At the end he says, "Go Sox!" Makes me laugh every time.

nixon33 said...

HE WAS FUCKING SAFE!

Jere said...

Freakin' DP, man.

Jim said...

Angels robbed of a run. Kendricks beat the throw. No DP. Fuck.

Rob said...

Yankees announcers say he was safe. "Yankees get a break."

allan said...

fuckin' tucan sam gets out of trouble. plenty of time though.

Jere said...

Not watching the game, but should've known Yankee bullshit was involved.

allan said...

Watching YES on mute. I remember the LAA guys from the Sox series. Big Daddy ... jeez.

nixon33 said...

it wasnt even close to being a double play he beat it ny a good step!
that ump sucks

allan said...

so ... it looks like the threads will stay here.

Jim said...

Sweet Jesus. Kay just admitted that the runner was "clearly safe." Everyone check outside for pigs flying by.

nixon33 said...

kay is actually pretty fair when calling plays...its his "mis-information" he supplies that bullshit....

Jere said...

Kay: All Red Sox fans are "gloom and doom" and wait for something bad to happen.

And stuff like that....

Rob said...

Rumblings in New York about Mussina being taken out of the rotation. If he has a terrible next start, it sounds like that may happen. Interesting...

nixon33 said...

who would they put in...igawa?

allan said...

guidry?

nixon33 said...

haha

Rob said...

They were talking about a kid in AAA that has 5 starts and an ERA under 2, but he's got a pitch count on him (don't they all?) That would be the question, though. Who would replace him. Mussina's won over 100 games for the Yankees, so I can see them giving him more slack than they would for other guys.

allan said...

i guess he goes sunday -- we'll miss him regardless.

allan said...

who's the kid - ian kennedy?

nixon33 said...

we see pettite/clemens/wang?

Rob said...

Well if they can get Guidry back into it, we should get Yaz. I mean, he's 68 years old... but this is the 21st century! I'm sure he could still turn on a fastball. Haha.

allan said...

honestly - yanking him sounds like a big panic move. not that i don't blame them for that.

and he's still under contract for next year!!!

Rob said...

Sounds like a sell-out at the Big A. The only time a crowd can keep a tune is when they're booing.

allan said...

we see pettite/clemens/wang?

looks like it.

dice - tucan
beckett - billy
schilling - wang

Jere said...

Every pitch Pettitte throws is in the dirt. How about some runs?

nixon33 said...

i didnt realize the yanks were playing the sox tonight...

Rob said...

I think it was Kennedy they were talking about. It's a hard decision about the Moose because of how far back they are and how many games they have left. They'll look at how many more starts he has in the season, who they're against (next one is Detroit), etc. etc. It'll be interesting to see. As a pitcher I feel bad for him, but as a Yankee pitcher, not so much.

nixon33 said...

hopefully schill can get his shite together for that series

Rob said...

Even if Schilling has a bad outing, you really have to hope the Sox score some runs for Dice and Beckett remains the 2007 Beckett. That way you take 2 out of 3. But you're right. Schilling's got to get it together, sooner rather than later.

nixon33 said...

truly all they need to do is win one...but yes i'd love for them to win the series...or sweep. but as long as htey minimize the damage.

Rob said...

It all depends on what the standings are when we get to New York. Most likely the standings will go 1-2 games either way, but the worst case is the Red Sox leading by 1 game going into the series.

Was A-Rod's jump to second as good as John Sterling made it out to be?

nixon33 said...

gary matthews JUNEEYAH!

Jere said...

Too bad Lackey cut his hair and doesn't look AS much like Peter Brady as he used to.

Rob said...

Oh snap. The O's just took the lead in the 8th inning. 7-6 BAL

nixon33 said...

what the f? they cant hit pettitte

nixon33 said...

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

ORLANDOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Rob said...

Yeah OC!!! 8th home run. Wow. 72 RBI this season.

nixon33 said...

i wonder how many games up we'd be if we still had OC

Rob said...

Lugo has 6 HR this season with 61 RBI

Jim said...

OCAB!! And Damon can't pull it back. Oh, and the Yankees have done their homework on Willets, that's why he sucks. Hope they don't pull that homework stuff on the Sox.

nixon33 said...

wow, i didnt realize lugo had that many rbi's. my bad

Rob said...

If we still had Cabrera, I think there's a legitimate argument that the Red Sox could have won the world series in 2005, and also could have made the playoffs in 2006. That one's harder to think of. But man. I'll tell you this: I don't think the Red Sox would have lost tonight if Cabrera was playing. That's just me.

nixon33 said...

amen.

nixon33 said...

i think pedroia getting hit, and leaving may have affected the game as well.

tim said...

Ohhh, Cab!

108 OPS+ 81 runs vs Slügos 71 OPS+ and only 53 runs.

Not to mention the chemistry with him and Manny/Flo

Rob said...

Big stat here, especially with the Sox playing like they did tonight: 2007, Lugo has 109 hits. Cabrera has 155 hits.

Rob said...

Sterling's getting all ansty in his pantsy. "If the Yankees don't score in this inning, they don't deserve to win." 1st and 3rd with 0 out... Yeah.

allan said...

but this is like a career batting year for ocab. his ops+ has generally sucked.

maybe we'd be one game better with him.

nixon33 said...

FUCK MELKY

Rob said...

That's true about Cabrera.

Oh man...

John Sterling: "The Melk-Man delivers. Hey! It's the Melky Way!"

What a tool.

tim said...

but this is like a career batting year for ocab. his ops+ has generally sucked.

Yeah. But his baseball personality is generally more likeable than Horton hears a Julio.

nixon33 said...

the yanks are going to win this game. FUCK

allan said...

Runs Created
Lugo - 50.5
Cabrera - 75.7

OC: 25.2 more runs.

In 127 games of schedule, that's about 1 extra run every 5 games.

allan said...

We certainly would lead the majors in handshakes.

Jere said...

Your team finally scores for you to tie the game, you don't walk the first batter of the next inning...

tim said...

We certainly would lead the majors in handshakes.

We already surely lead it in konichiwa bows, so handshakes wouldn't be that bad to add on.

allan said...

Cabrera's career OPS+ (that's including this season): 87.

In 2004 with Expos: 68
In 2004 with Sox: 97

He really can't hit much at all.

Rob said...

Cabrera and Millar are two guys you love to have on your team, even if it's just for their personalities alone. Not that Millar was that fun in 2005 when he wasn't hitting. But if I had my way, I'd have Millar up here for September. Expanded rosters, so he's not booting anyone or taking up a valuable spot. But nobody asked me.

Jere said...

" the yanks are going to win this game. FUCK "

along with the 04 ALCS, right? This game is hardly over.

Jim said...

Mr. Kay--you haven't told us how Pettitte feels about coughing up the homer or how the Red Sox did tonight. What's wrong with you?

allan said...

Whatta ya know? It's Robbie Cano!

with an error!!!!!

nixon33 said...

Horton hears a Julio.

CLASSIC!

allan said...

Cabrera and Millar are two guys you love to have on your team, even if it's just for their personalities alone.

I prefer talent, but that's just me.

(NESN should hire Millar 3 seconds after he retires, however.)

Rob said...

I don't see many gold gloves in Canooee's future. Maybe in a few years when he matures a little bit.

tim said...

Meanwhile at Camden Yard...

Texas ups their one-day total of runs to 39, as they lead the O's 9-7 in the ninth.

At least the O's aren't 27 runs out of this one.

Jere said...

The Rangers' 40th run of the day is in scoring position....

Jere said...

In the person of David Murphy--but the O's got out of it. 39 runs for the day unless it goes extras.

Rob said...

Liftoff.

Jere said...

Weird we both noticed at the same time.

Rob said...

That's got to be an MLB record, right? 39 runs in one day?

tim said...

Fuck sakes! A brae you!

Jere said...

The Angels have a shot because the Yanks will bring in Mo!

tim said...

That's got to be an MLB record, right? 39 runs in one day?

I know the first game was a record for most in one game. (Big deal if the last game that had like 36 runs or whatever was over 100 years ago, that has no relevance to me...as if i care what the chicago colts did before the turn of the 19th century)

Rob said...

This says a lot about Scot Shields' pitching lately: He's out there with the Angels down 3.

Jim said...

I've seen Shields have some horrible meltdowns vs. Yanks.

nixon33 said...

hardly over.....we'll see.

also...im as big a red sox fan like the next guy...but man am i tired of people bringing up 2004 when it comes to current day deficits...or current comebacks. and what im saying has nothing to do with them winning, im not over the fact that the red sox won the world series...im over the comparison to EVERY deficit. its just boring and used up.
"yeah just like 04" whatever dude, you didnt think they were gonna wiin when they were down 3-0

4-1...can you say 5 fucking games.

tim said...

On the tune of the advertising discussion earlier...another example of that bullshit.

Pitching change. "Time for a burger. An In and Out burger. Scot Shields in, John Lackey out."

On another note, anyone ever hear/read the George Carlin bit on advertising? Priceless.

tim said...

Faaaaaaaaaaak.

At least the boa constrictor held slappy at third.

tim said...

So tired. I'm in that 'post about anything remote' mood.

An exciting use of ellipses.

LA Announcer: "And the red hot whore...comes up"

tim said...

Chrissakes.

Rob said...

Same here. John Sterling pretty much starts singing whenever there's a "Ribby double"

iiiiiiiiiit issssss a riiiiiiby double for Georgie Posada...

Jim said...

I'm done. I hate the fucken Yankees. 2 things. The good, balanced Red Sox show up in Chicago, the pennant-contending Detroit Tigers actually show up in Detroit.

Jere said...

"its just boring and used up.
"yeah just like 04" whatever dude, you didnt think they were gonna wiin when they were down 3-0"

First of all--you don't know what I thought. I was at game 3 and I stayed til the end, telling everybody around me "the Yanks are wasting their runs for the rest of the series."

Second of all--my point is that for you to have claim that a game is over when one team has a two run lead with three innings to go--well, you should know better. But not only that, keep the negativity to yourself. If you think it's over, leave us alone to keep rooting. What good does it do to say "it's over"?

And if you're a Sox fan who's tired of talking about 2004, well, what's wrong with your brain? Did you get hit on the head with something?

Jere said...

"On another note, anyone ever hear/read the George Carlin bit on advertising? Priceless."

I like the Bill Hicks one better:)

Rob said...

Yep, I like the Bill Hicks one better, too.

Jere said...

Let me further why that pisses me off. A Yankee would still say, if the Sox were up 3-1 in the seventh, "they'll choke." And then I have to hear a Sox fan ASSUMING the Yanks would win in that situation. It's so disappointing to me. WE should be the fanbase now that assumes THEY will choke.

tim said...

planting seeds?

Rob said...

TEX/BAL game just went final. 9-7 Rangers

nixon33 said...

i clearly said i wasnt over the fact that they won. i dont care that you were at the game either.
i'll give you all of my negativity if i want.

but in the end, 2004 was a magical. but this is 2007

Jere said...

Even if I hadn't been in the game, my point was I didn't give up, and that was BEFORE we knew that it was possible that anything, even something never done before, was possible. It didn't even take a huge comeback like that for me to believe a team can overcome a two run deficit with three innings to play

Rob said...

Cubs and Giants are tied at 2 in the 10th inning... If they lose, things get REAL interesting in the NL Central. Chicago and Milwaukee would be tied if the Cubbies lose... AND, those Cardinals would be just 2 games back. Of course, the Cubs win and it's 1 in front of MIL and 3 up on STL. What a story about St. Louis, though, huh? And how about Joel Piñeiro starting games for them? 3-1 so far with the Cards. His worst game for them, he allowed 4 runs.

Rob said...

Joba... sounds like a Star Wars name.

nixon33 said...

thats fine. im glad to have your perspective. i was MAKING A PREDICTION.
i just think its a typical fucking '07 sox night when we have our 100 million dollar pitcher on the mound vs the worst d-ray starter, and lose in a fucking pitchers duel, mind you....and the yanks have to face lackey, one of the leagues best...and a team that they have serious trouble with....and beat them.
im not sure thats negativity...i think its just bad luck.
p.s. its ok to be able to look past '04...it doesnt make you a fake fan...or a bad one.

Jere said...

If you said all that now, fine. You said it when it was 3-1.

nixon33 said...

i made a prediction...., so calm down.

tim said...

Joba... sounds like a Star Wars name.

I thought the same thing...Joba Fett?

tim said...

lmao! just watched the paps/millar interview. love it.

tim said...

In desperate need of sleep...before I go, I'd just like to point out how awesome this is.

Check the OR, you like it so far?
Check the OR, you like it so far?
Check the OR, you like it so far?
Check the OR, you love the OR!

No. That is typical fucking baseball.

It's a sports where, on any given day, even the greatest team of all time can lose to the worst team of all time.

But over a season, the cream rises to the top. That why we are in 1st and Tampa is 27.5 GB.
