It took Boston four batters to get their run in the fourth: Pedroia HBP, Youkilis double, Ortiz BB, Lowell L7 sac fly. After scoring the run, Pedroia left the game with an injured left elbow.122 121 212 = 14
Dice had a one-hitter going with one out in the sixth when Upton cranked a two-run shot to right. So the Red Sox had three innings against the Rays bullpen to get one run.
7th: Youkilis K, Ortiz line single to RF, Lowell P4, Drew line single to LF, Varitek K.
8th: Crisp P6, Kielty L3, Lugo double RF corner, Cora K.
9th: Youkilis PF5 (1st pitch), Ortiz BB, Lowell L9 (replay showed Young trapped it, no argument from anyone), Drew ground single to center, Varitek F7.
Francona will never pinch-hit for Varitek, but I would have loved to see Manny hitting there. Varitek was useless tonight (0-for-5): foul pop to catcher, groundout first to pitcher, strikeout swinging, strikeout swinging, fly out to left.
Evan Brunell wrote today about The Fall of Jason Varitek.

Meanwhile, Yankee bloggers are telling fans: "Take a deep breath, it's no time to panic."
ReplyDeleteHowever, the Yankee room is running out of oxygen.
man what is with the google accounts thing that i have to create a new account everytime i post?????
ReplyDeleteanyway...im back from beantown.
I won't see you all in the game thread tonight, unless the game goes late. Have fun and go Sox!
ReplyDeleteDo you mean you have to keep logging in (having to get a new account would mean picking a new name)?
ReplyDeleteIf it's logging in, so do I. I do it about 10 times a day -- both with blogger and gmail email.
Example: Log in, work on a blog post, then go to upload a picture and actually have to log in again!
Annoying. And Laura never has to do this. Grrrrr....
ni i have to keep signing up.. was doing it with my yahoo and never got a confirmation...just did it with hotmail and it varified my account...weird.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone here sat in the Monster Seats yet, and is worth some of the prices people charge?
ReplyDeleteLooks like face value is $140.
ReplyDeleteFirst year was 50, then it jumped to 100. I'd still love to do it once.
Hinske instead of Kielty?
ReplyDeleteno experience in the monster seats myself. spoke w/ a friend of mine at the beginning of the year who did it once last year. He felt it was overrated. Wasn't a huge fan of the view-particularly for the price, plus noted it was quite windy up there. Having said that, he's glad he did it, but doesn't plan to do it again.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I liked most about the Monster seats is the view of the Red Sox dugout. You can see directly into it. Its pretty neat.
ReplyDeletewhere is the game thread tonight?
ReplyDeletei am here
ReplyDeleteFSN morons tonight
ReplyDeletei was on the phone with rogers cable trying to get them to change the feed to nesn.
it didn't work.
but i did register a complaint and got an email address to formally complain.
more red sox fans in canada should = more nesn feeds. (that goes for throughout the states too)
why i thought they might change it:
ReplyDeleteon a recent game, they started with the other team's feed, then it suddenly switched to the mfy game (arrggg), i called and when the sox game was restored, it was nesn.
i hate it when they arent on nesn
ReplyDeletei'm going to make this a little project for next year.
ReplyDeleteat mlb, you have a choice of radio feeds -- why not tv on mlb ei? (there should be enough channels to fit them in, right?)
oh no ococ has the "Coco Crystal" harido tonight
ReplyDeletecrystal?
ReplyDeletenext time JD bats at fenway: "uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuselesss"
ReplyDeletedrew's a little too choosy with pitches to swing at.
ReplyDeletecoco: 1-1.
OK, you can yell "Choooooooosy" --- the effect will be the same :)
ReplyDeleteLET'S GO LUGO!
ReplyDeleteyeah cause of cocos high harline i saw something in the weekly dig in boston that they said something about seperated at birth billy crystal and coco
ReplyDeletebilly crystal is so fucking annoying.
ReplyDeletebest thing i saw him in, though, was game 7 of the 2004 alcs. every so often, they showed him and it looked like he was going to cry.
the best thing ive ever seen in regards to hopw much we hate the yankees and billy crystal is in the series they played in 2005 (was it vs the white sox or angels?) anyway on of the opposing teams fans had a huge sign that read:BILLY CRYSTAL SUCKS!
ReplyDeletefucking awesome.
Wow, Texas has scored 20 runs against Baltimore. 5, 9, and 6 run innings.
ReplyDeletetexas scored 6 in the 8th with no outs. just got their 1st out of the inning w/ 1 on.
ReplyDeletedamn - dusty hit on left elbow. trainer out for a bit.
ReplyDeletestill wincing after about 2 minutes -- staying in.
ReplyDeleterays tv guys thinking he might be faking pain to set up the rays -- and then he'll steal second.
ReplyDeletegood lord.
he leads off first - left arm just dangling there.
ReplyDeletei think he's coming out very soon.
Yeehaw!
ReplyDeleteyooooook - double off top of rf wall.
ReplyDeleteHoly Christmas. A true football score for Texas over Baltimore: 24-3.
ReplyDeleteSalty has 7 RBI.
Pedroia looked like he was very uncomfortable heading to 3rd
ReplyDeleteBig spot for David.
ReplyDeleteThis is not good about Pedrera.
ReplyDeleteMust not have an injured RotY.
tiz checks his swing, 3b ump calls ball, both rays tv guys groan about the call -- migraine says "must be a league directive about not taking the bat out of big papi's hands"
ReplyDeletewaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Big spot for Dr. Doubles.
ReplyDeleteouch. i initially thought line-into-double-play. i'll take it.
ReplyDeleteAH JD YOU ARE AWFUL
drew? booooooooooooooo.
ReplyDeleteAre they booing Drew even at Tropicana?
ReplyDeleteMaybe J.D. should have been choosier on that one ..
ReplyDeletefsn: "maybe this is edwin's one bad inning"
ReplyDeletethe guy's ERA is 5.69. i think in most games he has more than one bad inning.
tek - you suck too.
only getting one run there is pretty crappy.
ReplyDeleteWAY TO GO TEAM!
ReplyDeleteBASES LOADED / NO OUTS/ 1 RUN
ugh
Theo: "We put more men on base, so we leave more men on base."
ReplyDelete(Paraphrased from yesterday's chat)
Grrrr.
Hope that doesn't haunt us.
Hope that the Angels win against Rivera tonight.
Peace to Dice-K. May he roll.
See you all later.
Pedroia out Cora in.
ReplyDeleteOK, say what you want about Don & Jerry and their annoying habits, but at least NESN doesn't give us a half inning biology lesson.
ReplyDeletehow did yook miss that pickoff tag?
ReplyDeletejeff - i know it.
ReplyDeletewe get details about what a little green stuffed animal did during the day!
At least you can make a drinking game out of Wally news.
ReplyDeletefrom mlb.com:
ReplyDeleteRenteria was activated from the disabled list in time to start Wednesday night's game against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. But while shifting his weight during the first pitch he saw from Bronson Arroyo in the first inning, the veteran shortstop reacted in obvious pain.
Without even taking a swing, Renteria aggravated the high right ankle sprain that had sidelined him since Aug. 2. The Braves say that he'll be re-evaluated on Thursday.
After Renteria stumbled and attempted to keep his weight off his right leg, manager Bobby Cox and head athletic trainer Jeff Porter rushed on the field. It took them just a few moments to help the injured Renteria back to the bench.
Damn. That sucks.
ReplyDeleteAt least you can make a drinking game out of Wally news.
ReplyDeleteDo tell.
Texas now beating Baltimore 26-3 -- and they have a Game 2 to play!!!
ReplyDeleteHey, just got here, so this is a bit late. I sat on the Monster earlier this year in the blowout against the Braves (the Mike Lowell Grand Slam game on May 19).
ReplyDeleteI paid face value for the front row ($140). To guarantee access to the tickets, I coughed up even more money to get a Red Sox Nation "Monster" membership (so that's what that little plastic card is for). Otherwise you are in a lottery with just about no chance of getting tickets.
I doubt I'd do it again, but it was an amazing view. You are right on top of Coco and Manny, with a great view of the game from a nice angle. We were close to the light tower on the right (as viewed from home plate).
Here are my pictures.
Was it worth the price? I dunno, but I went with my seven year old son and he loved it. So I guess I'd have to say yes.
On my Gameday, the 26 for Texas doesn't actually fit into the score spot, part of the 6 is cut off.
ReplyDeleteHinske: SB and E2!!! Get him in, Lugo.
Remy: Maybe the haircut gives him more speed!
ReplyDeleteLOL
Wally Drinking Game
ReplyDeleteEach person take a different scenario and whenever Remy mentions that situation, you drink. Examples:
1. Wally interactinvg with some other mascot, drink
2. Wally with travel trouble, drink
3. Wally on a 4-wheeler running over a player coming out of the dugout, oh wait, that was someone else...
You're on, Einstein.
ReplyDeleteCoco's "SLOW" sign in front of the dugout the other night was pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteDamn, nice catch from Crawford
ReplyDeleteRangers now up by an Order of Magnitude.
ReplyDeleteTexas now has 30!
ReplyDeleteA little gift for Trembley getting a 1 year contract for next season.
ReplyDeleteholy fuck
ReplyDelete30 runs for texas.
Tex 000 509 0(10)6
Bal 102 000 00
the rangers will, of course, get shutout on like 2 hits in the nightcap.
ReplyDeletekielty in for hinske, per gameday
ReplyDeleteFSN says an Rangers pitcher threw the last 3 innings in the 30-3 win -- so he gets a SAVE!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy? I hope Hinske isn't hurt.
ReplyDeleteand HA at that guy getting a save...that is amazing
wes littleton gets the save and gabbard gets the win.
ReplyDeleteapparently it is a modern record for runs scored. no team has scored 30 in a game since a year that started with 18xx.
Wow.
ReplyDeleteCmon dice
I'm impressed with 30 runs, but I'm more impressed that all the runs were scored in only 4 different innings.
ReplyDeleteI think Tropicana Field should be renamed Fenway South.
ReplyDeleteDo they need to send Papi on a play like that? Ortiz sliding just isn't a good thing...
ReplyDeleteJeff said...
ReplyDeleteDo they need to send Papi on a play like that? Ortiz sliding just isn't a good thing...
I bet they don't send him if Manny's coming up.....
thats fucking sucked.
ReplyDeletei understand you need to be aggresive, but risking papi further injury isnt good, and there was only one out. WTF
David Murphy 5-7 and Gabbard gets the win....
ReplyDeleteDavid Murphy 5-7 and Gabbard gets the win....
ReplyDeleteWhy can't we get players like that?
redsock said...
ReplyDeleteDavid Murphy 5-7 and Gabbard gets the win....

We just raise them well and sent them out in to the world.....
gameday says hinske left with injured leg.
ReplyDeletei don't think fsn has even mentioned he's out (it's been 1.5 innings).
any news from nesn?
Can someone explain how that qualifies as a save? As far as I can tell, he entered the game up by 10 runs... hardly a save situation...
ReplyDeletePitching the last three innings of while your team is winning counts as a save. The run differential only comes into effect if you pitch less than three.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Thanks for clarifying that. I guess the fact that I never saw that situation arise says something about modern bullpen usage.
ReplyDeleteAP:
ReplyDeleteThe Texas Rangers became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game.
It was the ninth time a major league team scored 30 runs, the first since Chicago set the major league record in a 36-7 rout of Louisville in a National League game on June 28, 1897, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Texas also set a team record for runs scored in a doubleheader -- before the second game even started.
you are #@$@!#@! me
ReplyDelete3 innings vs the Rays pen = runs (and a win).
ReplyDeleteI'm still glad that Dice-K is throwing more fastballs tonight. Once again the offense is not capitalizing on their opportunities yet. Yet. Any guesses on when the Red Sox will take the lead again? I'm betting... the 8th inning.
ReplyDeletewe need you now, papi.
ReplyDeleteDr., if you please?
ReplyDeleteDammit, I believe in Drew. Here we go, JD!
ReplyDeleteWhat's with all the broken bats? Is there someone I can blame for that?
ReplyDeleteTek tonight: P2, 3-1, K.
ReplyDeleteCan we PH Cash for him?
n/m, Tek is up, not Drew (that's what I get for not paying attention for a minute).
ReplyDeleteerrrr well it turns out the inning is over. GAH
When Tek was up in the 5th he was swinging at everything. In the 7th he was called out on strikes. Some days you can't win ...
ReplyDeletefucking motherfuckers with LOB
ReplyDeleteFSN: "Varitek is really the last hitter you want to see up at the plate right now."
ReplyDeleteRedsock: "If you're a Boston fan."
seriously, what are these FSN guys smoking?
ReplyDeleteFSN: FUCKING STUPIDS NITWITS
The FSN guys did not REALLY say that did they????
ReplyDeleteAHHHHHH a jam here
MELTDOWN
ReplyDeleteWell, at least the force at home is now in effect!
ReplyDeleteThis is NOT second-guessing ---- why did Dice have to come out? Seriously...
ReplyDeleteoh they did. and more.
ReplyDeleteheart and soul of team. blah blah
...
i do not appreciate what mr. timlin is doing here.
HUGE
ReplyDeleteSee, without the HBP the score a run!
ReplyDeletenice play youk
ReplyDeleteDice - 111 pitches.
ReplyDeleteis it coincidence or is it real: ever since the boris comments about how hes not happy with how many pitches dice-k had been throwing, they've been pulling him a bit earlier?
ReplyDeletemaybe im out of my mind.
HUGE BALLS OF TIMLIN!
ReplyDeleteIt's a scoreless inning, I'll take it
ReplyDeleteTimlin == God
ReplyDeletenixon33 - check his pitch counts and see.
ReplyDeletewho is coming in to pitch for the Devil Dawgs?
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's just as nice to see a pitcher get into a jam then pitch his way out of it rather than just throw a scoreless inning. Not that you're every really wishing it upon them. 5 outs left. Gagné's loosening.
ReplyDeleteTexas has a 3-0 lead in the Bottom of the 3rd in game 2.
ReplyDeleteOf course, Baltimore had a 3-0 lead through 3 innings in game 1.
"Red Sox have left a small village on base."
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna suggest we drink on that one.
SLUGO!
LETS GO!
ReplyDeleteFUCK.
ReplyDeleteThe village is getting bigger.
ReplyDeleteCastig: "Red Sox have speed at second if Cora can find a hole, bloop a hit."
ReplyDeleteIf Lugo gets thrown out at the plate I blame Demarlo Hale for the loss.
Never mind ..
ReplyDeletePayton and Markakis just hit home runs in Baltimore... I thought about it earlier tonight about having a ticket to see both of those games; how absolutely boring I'm sure it would be. Now I'm wishing I was at Camden Yards tonight. 3-3 in the Bottom of the 3rd. Could they...?
ReplyDeletesox fans at the trop booing gagne. fsn says we have short-term memory.
ReplyDeleteyeah -- we're forgetting all the great things gagne did for us over the years.
MORANS.
Come on you freaking Habs fan you.
ReplyDeleteFirst clean inning????
ReplyDeleteBaseball Tonight is showing Texas/Baltimore highlights
ReplyDeleteTwo "Kevin Millar Special" foul HRs
ReplyDeleteSo close
ReplyDeleteso much for a clean inning
ReplyDeleteNot bad. I'll take it.
ReplyDeleteNo hits or runs though.
ReplyDeleteNo bases-loaded one-out jams, for that matter.
Clean enough...
ReplyDeleteL-girl is home and says "Hi, Game Thread!"
ReplyDelete9th:
Yook
Flo
Dr.
Manny for Drew?
Come on guys, let's give gagne his second W as a redsox.
ReplyDeleteLETS GET SOME F-ING RUNS!
ReplyDeleteProgress for Gagné, I'd call it. Even with the two hard hit foul balls.
ReplyDeleteTwo straight appearances with no runs for Gagne! But who will pitch the ninth for the Save?
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Youk went after that first pitch.
ReplyDeleteyook - pitch up and in and he fucking hacks - pop up foul to third.
ReplyDeleteidiot.
I remember when I thought Youk was great. Now he just pisses me off.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the Youkilis we knew and loved? This joker swings at everything, argues balls and strikes ... get over yourself.
ReplyDeleteHe trapped that ball! Surprised there was no argument. Wow. What a world.
ReplyDeletereplay looked like a fuckjign TRAP
ReplyDeleteFSN: Rays caught a break there!
WHY THE FUCK IS JD DREW BATTING IN ANY SITUATION
ReplyDeleteCastig just pointed out, "If they do rule it a trap, Ortiz is forced."
ReplyDeleteBig time trap!
ReplyDeleteGot robbed!
ReplyDeleteIT'S A MIRACLE
ReplyDeleteMANNY FOR TEK PLEASE
FSN doesnt say trap, but clearly they know it was not a catch
ReplyDeleteDREW!!!!!!!!!
TITO -- DO NOT LET TEK HIT
What's FSN saying now about 'Tek coming up to the plate?
ReplyDeleteI take back .01% of my J.D. Drew hate.
ReplyDeleteWHERE THE F IS MANNY>?????
ReplyDeleteFSN: "It's Varitek again, and we've talked about how dangerous he is."
ReplyDeleteOy.
"WHY THE FUCK IS JD DREW BATTING IN ANY SITUATION"
ReplyDeleteyou were saying???
I'm not the sharpest stick, but why not have someone run for Papi? In case of extra innings?
ReplyDeleteThanks Varibelli.
ReplyDelete14 LOB.
ReplyDeleteClassic 2007 Red Sox loss.
should there be a pinch runner on second?
ReplyDelete@Jeff: With Hinske and Pedroia out there's nobody left on the bench
ReplyDeleteGREAT GAME RED SOX>
ReplyDeleteyou fucking suck.....
sad that was a very winnable game too many left on base
ReplyDeletelets go angels.....ugh
ReplyDeleteThanks Daniel - good point
ReplyDelete122 121 212 = 14 LOfuckingB
ReplyDelete8 LOB for 'Tek is a killer
ReplyDeleteAhhh! Damn! C'mon, freakin 14 men LOB. This hurts.
ReplyDeleteLet's go angels!
ReplyDeletethese are the kind of games that make me want to break shit.
ReplyDeletedicek pitched awesome (minus the HR) one little fucking mistake.
and we have a million men left on base.
so much for the "overmatched" game....
again, great job team....
Thanks Varibelli.
ReplyDeleteHa! that's a good one.
Seems like Dice never gets any run support.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I want to break shit too.
Red Sox 7 and 3 vs Rays
ReplyDeleteAll three losses goes to Daisuke.
14 lob 1.5 an inning.
At least they won the series. Go Angels!!!!
Seattle also lost.
ReplyDeleteJohn Sterling: "This game has become much bigger for the Yankees because the Red Sox [and Mariners] just lost."
Seems like Dice never gets any run support
ReplyDeleteIs it true that some pitchers consistently get run support while others don't? Does it hold from one season to the next?
Just curious.
The run support statistics are so strange, because there really is no rhyme or reason to it. Unless one pitcher has a personal catcher who can't hit (Wakefield/Mirabelli), but that rarely comes up. It's so strange.
ReplyDeletefrancona should have come out to argue that ""catch"" in the 9th. plz. wtf. i think they would have reversed it cause it was obvious the dude himself didn't even think he caught it considering he threw to second to get the force out. LAME.
ReplyDeleteAngels announcer just said the Sox-Rays game was a pitchers' duel.
ReplyDeleteThe catch looked legitimate to me in real-time... I was very surprised when the replay showed the trap. Maybe they were just as fooled. Well, that's a stretch.
ReplyDeletere: Run support.
ReplyDeleteDice-K is the new Wake is the new Pedro.
Thing is, he did get the force at second, so it would have just been Lowell at 1st instead of Ortiz - and Ortiz's speed didn't become an issue ..
ReplyDeleteTimely DP in Anaheim, eh? Men at the corners with 1 out. Double play, end of the inning. I hope John Lackey is John Lackey tonight, and not the guy we saw in Boston.
ReplyDeleteand 10-RBI-guy coming up.
ReplyDeleteDoes it hold from one season to the next?
ReplyDeleteNo.
In some of Dice's starts this year, the Sox have scored 13, 11, 10, 9, 9 and 8 runs.
Avg. 4.75

Ortiz went back to the bag when the called it a good catch....He was half way , idon't think they would have forced him......
Francona will never pinch-hit for Varitek, but I would have loved to see Manny hitting there. Varitek was useless tonight (0-for-5): foul pop to catcher, groundout first to pitcher, strikeout swinging, strikeout swinging, fly out to left.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget about the four times he came up with runners on first and second with two outs and f'ed up four times.
Dice pitched well, he just frustrates the hell outa ya, with the damn walks.....
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't bother me if he was hitting 8th.
ReplyDelete6-4 Texas in the bottom of the 5th in game 2. They may need to replace home plate.
ReplyDeleteThing is, he did get the force at second, so it would have just been Lowell at 1st instead of Ortiz - and Ortiz's speed didn't become an issue ..
ReplyDeletethat's true. i forgot that amidst the annoying loss lol ;/
ok lets go angels. when's the last time there were two 25+ run victories in one day in baseball?
WE JUST LOST TO THE WORST OF THE DRAYS PITCHING STAFF
ReplyDeleteI wish to report a serious case of identity theft. The Reggie Willits playing for the Angels the last 3 nights IS NOT the same Reggie Willits that drove the Sox crazy last weekend. WTF?
ReplyDeleteApparently the home plate umpire in Anaheim, Paul Emil is a little bashful about calling strikes...
ReplyDeleteJohn Sterling: "It'd be nice if Emil actually told everyone it was a strike. So, basically, we're going to be wrong all night. I'm looking at the scoreboard and the scoreboard is constantly wrong as well. So we're going to be wrong all night, I guess. Oh well."
He's not that painful to listen to, unlike others I know (*cough*Glenn Geffner *cough*), even though it sounds like he's broadcasting from the local pub...
yanks lead 2-0
ReplyDeleteoops 1-0
ReplyDeleteHip-Hip ran them out of the inning. Good job, Hip-Hip! The Red Sox salute you. :D
ReplyDeletePETTITTE DEALING....FUCK
ReplyDeleteGet glad... with Vlad! Two-bagger.
ReplyDeleteOr would it be... Don't be mad, get Vlad!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter.
