G132: Yankees 5, Red Sox 3

Distance to the RF pole at Yankee Stadium? 314 feet. Distance of Johnny Damon's two-run, tie-breaking home-run in the seventh inning? 315 feet.

New York got two runs in the first off Dice, the second on coming on a double by Jorge Posada. After that hit, Matsuzaka retired 12 of the next 13 batters -- and the Red Sox tied it up. Manny Ramirez hit a solo shot to right in the second and Julio Lugo tripled and scored on David Ortiz's fly ball to left in the third.

The teams' captains traded solo home runs (Derek Jeter in the 5th, Jason Varitek in the 7th) before Damon gave the MFY a 5-3 lead.

Facing Joba Chamberlain in the 8th, Kevin Youkilis walked and, with two outs, Mike Lowell singled. But JD Drew fanned against the Hut. Mariano Rivera set down Varitek (K), Coco Crisp (K) and Lugo (L4) in the ninth with a problem.

This was a game the Yankees had to win -- and they did. Nothing to do but brush this one aside -- which is easy, knowing it's August 29 and we have a seven-game lead -- and get ready to humiliate Fat Billy tomorrow.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.76, 120 ERA+) / Andy Pettitte (3.69, 116 ERA+)

Stats 'n stuff.

  2. In Myrtle Beach now for the week, for a much needed vacation. Going to try and find a local establishment carrying the games, but if not then it looks like MLBTV all the way.

  5. Oh! Tim, enjoy the beach. We just got back from the outer banks. So very nice. I'm stuck with YES here. Gotta work a NESN scam one of these years.

Mmmm... steak. Excellent idea. I'm craving pizza myself. Pizza, beer, baseball. What could be better?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well I just took a two-hour long nap after a long (too long) day, but I'm ready to go!

    ReplyDelete
  7. 8. Andy Phillips, 1B

It's funny, last night both Sterling and Kay were trumpeting the Yankee lineup, talking about how it was their best offensive lineup, they need to stick with it for every game for the rest of the season, they need to score runs, win games, etc.

Wonder what they'll have to say tonight about Giambi on the bench. I guess they can score zero runs without him...

How are we doing in the "emotional" standings? I haven't checked those in awhile.

I think he is one of the Globe interns this year.

How are we doing in the "emotional" standings? I haven't checked those in awhile.

Hmmm, we should probably ask Susan W. about that!

  13. Hi all, I won't be in the game thread today, but I'm here - allowing your comments to go through as quickly as I can.

    "Enjoy the game!"

    "Buenas noches, amigos!"

  14. Any hockey fans here tonight? Do you know a former player, Ron Ellis, played for Leafs on their last Stanley Cup team? His nephew had dinner here tonight. My niece and her b/f are here for the week, the b/f plays hockey and one of his friends came down from Barrie, "an Ellis". Big hockey family I guess.

He grew up in New Hampshire but is not esp a Red Sox fan (not into baseball). Oh well.

  15. Scoring this one by hand tonight.

My penmanship blows. I don't find myself needing to write by hand much.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ah, shit. I got "My 9" on mlb.tv.

    ReplyDelete
  17. gameday!!!!!!!! i hate working nights.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well it would have been nice to see them work him a little bit.

Six pitch innings don't do the Sox any favors.

    ReplyDelete
  19. sorry about that, zen.

3 outs on only 7 pitches.

    shut 'em down, dice !

    ReplyDelete
  20. you gotta love technology. gameday now shows a pitch tracer, lists the pitch speed to a tenth of a mph, and shows the break and angle of the pitch. it's ridiculous. this may not be new, but i've never seen gameday do this before. i know, i'm easily amused.

    ReplyDelete
  21. fuck you ump. that was a K to abreu.

    ReplyDelete
  22. benny, some parks have that, so we see it, some don't.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How I loathe Bobby Abreu.

Does he have a nickname? Does he even deserve one?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Normally I would approve of an A-Rod HBP, but not so much when it loads the bases.

    ReplyDelete
  25. slappy acting hurt. idiot.

    fuck -- abreu had k'd.

    dp pls.

    ReplyDelete
  26. A-Rod went in there pretty hard, didn't he? I hope they get that out of them. No beanball tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  27. MFY 1-0.

agggggggg ... the season's over. it's the end. the yankees always win. sox always choke. boo hoooo

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cousins is a squeezer. As for the Gameday - I think that is from the Qstec parks that you can get that info.

A good stat from baseball musings David Pinto - The Boston pen posts a 2.93 ERA, while the Yankees are at 4.06. That's a higher ERA than the Boston starters.

    Fragging shemp

    ReplyDelete
  29. can't tell from gameday if that had double play potential.

    ReplyDelete
  30. A lot of crap from these My9 dorks about "sending a message" after A-Rod's beaning by his hard slide into 2nd. As if he wouldn't have gone in hard otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi all. Hopefully this is Dice K's "bad inning" and he recovers to pitch well. A couple of runs shouldn't win this game.

    ReplyDelete
  32. why did i know this was going to be irritating. despite the lead...just...

    mf irritating.

    *switches to sharapova match*

    ooh pictures

    ReplyDelete
  33. dumbo double.

could have been a dp, but slappy wasn't held so he got a lead and went in hard. lugo leapt straight up and fired, but it was late and wild, yook dove to the rf side to save it.

remy: "no let up in the ny lineup"

    redsock: "andy phillips?"

    ReplyDelete
  34. Remember ... Sox only have to win ONE game to keep the MFYs SEVEN games back.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Girardi & co. give some faint praise to Manny's LF'ing, saying that he's not bad "when he's interested."

    ReplyDelete
  36. Manny's batting .420 against Pettitte. 29 hits, 3 HR, 18 RBI

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sounds like a serious MUMS alert to me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Make that... Something higher than .420

    MANNY DONG!

    ReplyDelete
  46. uh-oh the posts are all mussed up, lol! *looks at moderator questioningly*

    ReplyDelete
  48. but yah, love joni. they don't make em like her anymore! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. hot shot to dp's right. glove a short hop and spin and fire -- nice.

    coco retires the dud.

    ReplyDelete
  50. dp to his left, tumbles around 3-4 times and gets noodle.

    holy shit!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'll give that tumble a 9.8! Yeah Dusty! He's been very impressive this year defensively, hasn't it? I loved the tumble!

    ReplyDelete
  52. looked like a dice, quick inning. i mean, a nice quick inning.

    ReplyDelete
  53. unbelievable plays by pedroia!

    ReplyDelete
  54. THAT'S the Lugo we all know and love!

    Three bagger.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Commentary from Girardi about why Matsuzaka threw the ball the ump asked for to the screen. "Was he trying to show Damon up? I don't know. It was very strange."

It was also very obvious Varitek was fooling with his equipment. M. just got sick of waiting for him to receive the ball so he tossed it out of play.

    ReplyDelete
  56. slugo gapper to lcf. milk dud kicks it to the wall, easy triple.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ok, let's get some runs here.

    Slugo!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. swing 3-0 and tapback to tucan? not good.

    bring him home yook.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Getting into the bullpen by the fifth inning at this rate. Good!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Way to go Youk!

    Drive that pitch-count up.

    ReplyDelete
  61. This qualifies as a (great) long AB!

    ReplyDelete
  62. 11 pitch BB for the GG.

we need some papi power -- and soon.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Setting the table for Papi's 3-run HR....

    ReplyDelete
  64. Sac Fly, RBI... Good enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I can't believe Damon didn't throw Lugo out on the tag...he's got such a good arm!

    Way to go Papi!

    ReplyDelete
  66. tucan pitches: 7-25-22 = 54
    dice pitches: 26-11 = 37

    ReplyDelete
  67. 54 pitches (33 strikes) for Pettitte through 3.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I don't know what made me more frustrated, the fact that they gave Dustin the green light or that he still couldn't hit a fly ball to tie the game. That inning could've been a lot more if he takes a walk. Glad we tied it though.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I was puzzled by the 3-0 green lighter as well.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Number of times Yankee fans cheered because scoreboard/sound effects told them to in first inning: 15.

Number of times Red Sox fans cheered because scoreboard/sound effects told them to since 1912: 0.

    ReplyDelete
  71. hey, jere, was manny's hr a short porch toilet cheapie?

    :>)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Fast ball hitter will usually get the green light on 3-0 pitches. He hit it up the middle, just not hard enough to get over pettitte.

    ReplyDelete
  73. NESN right on that squirrel, but misses a throw to first by Tek.

Not that I'm not amused by the squirrel:)

    ReplyDelete
  74. I never knew how much info is crammed into these media guides. I printed the Red Sox game notes... 9 pages of very tiny text!

There's a squirrel on top of the right field foul pole. Went down onto the screen, and now is going back up. John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman... THERE he is! They're wondering if the squirrel is scared.

Sterling: Well, I'm not a squirrelologist, so I have no idea. You know what they say, Red Sox/Yankees games are always nuts.

    ba dum bum.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Are you kidding, I love it when they have to deal with the other team reaching their short porch... that was a rocket shot, though.

    ReplyDelete
  76. i love the cat av's. i think i'm gonna be a copycat (a-hah!) and find one too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Fast ball hitter will usually get the green light on 3-0 pitches. He hit it up the middle, just not hard enough to get over pettitte.

    Good point. :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. "Fast ball hitter will usually get the green light on 3-0 pitches. He hit it up the middle, just not hard enough to get over pettitte."

With tying run on third, ESPECIALLY if you know you're getting a fast ball right down the middle (3-0 count), you should be able to get that run in with a fly ball. Sometimes I wonder if these guys are even thinking about this stuff. But Dustin seemed pretty pissed.

    ReplyDelete
  79. WRKO reports that Lowell is over .500 during a 10 game hitting streak. All that and inching us closer to the bullpen, too.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Drew is just a black hole in that batting order.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Drew came into tonight's play batting .429 against Pettitte with 2 home runs (6 for 14)

    ReplyDelete
  82. J.D. is becoming an embarrassment to Drews everywhere. ;-p

    ReplyDelete
  83. BTW watching the MLB.TV feed which is the MY9NY (WWOR) channel. These announcers are like 20x better than the Red Sox announcers. They actually seem intelligent, and say interesting stuff -- fleshing out the game with pertinent information.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Cano... little glance out to the mound...

    ReplyDelete
  85. canoe: learn the game.

0-2, the next one is often inside

    ReplyDelete
  86. Golly, that mean, hard look Cano gave to DiceK after the brushback sure intimidated him, didn't it? That is scary stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  87. On the list of things you probably shouldn't say on the radio, I'd say this is near the top:

"You gotta see this." -Suzyn Waldman

    ReplyDelete
  88. since dumbo's double, dice has retired 10 of 11 (non-out was a BB).

    ReplyDelete
  89. The WWOR announcers just said they are Michael Kay and Joe Giordi (sp?).

    ReplyDelete
  90. Those are the YES guys (on channel 9). ... Kay is the fucking worst person you want to listen to for a Sox gam.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Drew is just a black hole in that batting order.

During the month of August - J.D.

    .324 /.400 /.479

    ReplyDelete
  92. why look at that. jeter can't get the roller to his right.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Joe Girardi's a good announcer but I've heard a lot of complaints about Michael Kay. I haven't heard him much at all, though.

Seeing eye for the Dust man. Good night so far for him, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  94. That's one thing about Jeter. He's lost a ton of range, especially into the hole. There are plays he dives at and misses that most guys don't dive at and get.

    ReplyDelete
  95. He's lost a ton of range

You can't lose what you never had.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Radio has the count 1-2
    NESN has the count 2-1

Fans were cheering waiting for the strikeout and then they changed the count. Heh.

    ReplyDelete
  97. mfy fans too fucking stupid to remember the last 3 pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Well, if Papi is going to K at least he tried to take out a few Yankee fans. Might as well make the K somewhat productive.

    ReplyDelete
  99. unusual sox - yankees game 1/2 done and only 1:40 minutes played.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The Yankee fans desperately want someone to get beaned. One person said Pedoria should get beaned for the tumbling play in the second inning. Strange people.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Wow, that bat went flying...pretty scary.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Wow. Commentary from the YES guys now about what a great guy Steinbrenner is. Honestly. I could mute but I like to hear the crowd too much.

    ReplyDelete
  103. sarah: he signs their checks, so they love him. that's the rule.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Pettitte had two straight innings of 17 pitches (10 strikes). Interesting things that generally mean nothing, though 17 pitches isn't very economical. Up to 88 now through 5.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Well it's not a Red Sox/Yankees series without a Jeter dong. No worries, mates.

    ReplyDelete
  106. CI did not homer in the 2004 ALCS.

    ...

I wanna pound the Hut -- bad!!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. RE: signed checks, yeah, I know it, but it doesn't make it any more enjoyable to listen to! Actually, the part that entertained me was the way they acted as though they were in trouble for talking about him as a good guy - that the reason you don't see that in the media is that he doesn't like it!

    ReplyDelete
  108. No, ish, not worried at all! I liked that the my9 fan blog question today was, "Is it still possible for the Yankees to catch the Red Sox." (paraphrased)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Jeter has 19 home runs against the Red Sox. Posada has 27, Giambi has 30, and A-Rod has 36.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Get ready for some Yankee bullpen feasting. Pettitte's at 101 pitches. He'll probably finish the inning.

    ReplyDelete
  111. cameron diaz looking hot ;) but she's prolly a yankee fan (loser)

    ReplyDelete
  112. So Drew is supposed to hit well against Pettite??? Not tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  113. And Drew's career high of GIDP keeps on growing (9).

    ReplyDelete
  114. My God I hate JD Drew. I hated him when he held out for a bigger contract as a rookie, and now we're stuck with this loser. Every single time he comes up, I think automatic out, and he NEVER lets me down.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Strange play... Not sure anyone thought Posada was going to second. single, E7

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think automatic out, and he NEVER lets me down.

His average and OBP is .000?

    Huh.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I would expect Papi to have more gdp's. After all, it is not like he has blazing speed :).

    ReplyDelete
  118. I know, enough with the Drew hating.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Looks like Pettitte's getting another inning.

Pettitte, Joba the Hut, then Rivera. Well, best get the run off Pettitte.

    ReplyDelete
  120. OK, let's go ahead here and spare Dice K a loss. Where are all those bats we had in Chicago? (OK, it was Chicago, but still....)

    ReplyDelete
  121. Looks like another fragging game where Daisuke gets minimal run support and the second straight game where he makes one bad pitch that ends up in the bleachers.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Looks like another fragging game where Daisuke gets minimal run support and the second straight game where he makes one bad pitch that ends up in the bleachers.

Hey, don't go all n33 on us!

Boston has scored more runs after the 6th inning this season than any other team in MLB.

    ReplyDelete
  123. TEK!!!!!!!!!!!

    nice leap johnny.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Now I'm jonesin' for the soft underbelly of the middle relievers. Will only happen if Tek gets a leadoff hit. Come on Tek ...

    ReplyDelete
  125. TEK DONG!!!!!!!!!!

    TIE GAME!!

John Sterling didn't think it was going to go. He was really baffled by that, and so was I. I'm actually surprised Damon didn't get it.

    Brand new ballgame, folks. :D

    ReplyDelete
  126. Dice of the hook, let's keep it coming.

Pettitte, Joba the Hut, then Rivera. Well, best get the run off Pettitte.

    Indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I liked how Damon looked, hopefully, in his glove.

    Way to go Tek!

    ReplyDelete
  128. TEKKIE !!!
    Hi Guys
    Glad I finally got home

    ReplyDelete
  129. manny knows how to leap at the wall and rob HR.

    the noodle does not.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Wow...Damon had some serious ups on the VTek homer. "Looks like he mis-timed his jump says RemDawg.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hey SoSock, thanks for your comment on my blog. If I had known you were coming, I would have had a better post up. :)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Can we keep the momentum going? Let's get some more....

    ReplyDelete
  133. Hey Amy, nice to see more women around here. Welcome to Joy Nation. :)

    ReplyDelete
  134. Hey, don't go all n33 on us!

    ever heard of reverse psychology?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Looked like a great high heater from Dice to end the last at-bat for Cano, too.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Kind of a let-down after what looked like a great momentum shift - But hey, NEW BALLGAME
(and our bullpen's better than theirs) :)
    I-girl - I'll be back

    ReplyDelete
  137. Is Chief around? Here's our guy Ronald. (Kielty, the Flame Fro-er)

    ReplyDelete
  138. Final line on Pettitte (one would assume): 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 HR. 119 pitches, 70 strikes.

Manny left the game. The back is probably barking at him again. Anybody see anything? Kielty LF

    ReplyDelete
  139. Manny hurt? Any details? He got taken out.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Yup.

    I'm lovin' it

Maybe I should change my avatar? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  141. they showed him stumbling out of box on his 6th inning sngle. limping down the line.

    ReplyDelete
  142. l-girl, thanks for the welcome. I like the fact that there are several women here. Oops, a single for that Phillips guy. Anyway, thanks! And I love Joni also!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Frag it. I knew I should have watched Eureka

    ReplyDelete
  144. Chief, this one's for you.

Don't lose hope, folks. 8 Games Up and growing.

    ReplyDelete
  145. ahh fuck off with yr curtain call dork!!! fucking hate the stupid curtain call. it degrades the whole game of baseball to do it so often and for such small cause.

    ReplyDelete
  146. lopez and delcarmen up. oki down.

    ReplyDelete
  147. 1 batter too long - shouldn't have let Noodle see him a 4th time Tito

    ReplyDelete
  148. Using my infallible 20-20 hindsight, should have taken DiceK out after 6.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Damn Damon. Dice K back on the hook.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Chief, this one's for you.

    Excellent. I'm lovin' it!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Joe Castig was talking earlier that Damon isn't too happy in NY and that the feeling was mutual. But hey curtain calls are what the MFY fans are about!

    ReplyDelete
  152. So, who do you like best to get the runs off of? Chamberlain, or Rivera?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Amy, yes, it's a very non-sexist place. Although I think I scared away a female fan the other day with some over-the-top enthusiasm. Oh well... :)

    ReplyDelete
  154. remy being an asshole with the MUMS:

"a lot of times, manny doesn't run hard, but that was exceptionally slow."

(on his injury out of the box)

    FUCK YOU REMY

    ReplyDelete
  155. This does seem to be Tito's weak spot as a manager... unwillingness to take his starters out soon enough. Agreed?

    ReplyDelete
  156. Damn - left him in for Jeeter
C'mon Tito - I know he threw a lot more pitches than this in Japan, but he wasn't facing the MFY's line-up either

    ReplyDelete
  157. I like seeing the pitchers stick around until the relief comes in from the bullpen and say go get 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I was surprised to see Dice K come back in the 7th even though he hadn't yet thrown 100 pitches. Just my vibes that he wasn't that sharp. Oh well, Monday morning quarterbacking (I know, wrong sport)

    ReplyDelete
  159. Fragging Lugo, make a decent throw will you.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Funny thing is - I coach Youth Baseball, and as much as I bitch about others doing it - I'm bad about leaving my starters in too long also :(

    ReplyDelete
  161. tito was fine -- do not agree he had a slow hook tonight.

    ReplyDelete
