G149: Red Sox 10, Yankees 1

Yankees - 100 000 000 - 1 4 0
Red Sox - 100 013 41x - 10 12 0
Win #90. The lead's back up to to 5.5 and the magic number is down to nine. (The sportswriters for the New York tabloids will have to do a 180-degree turn from today's "alive" articles.)

Boston pulled away against the feeble New York bullpen. Torre used five pitchers in the seventh inning as the Red Sox got two hits and drew five walks, scoring four times.

David Ortiz reached base five times (two singles, two walks, and a two-run double), Jacoby Ellsbury scored a run as a pinch-runner for Kevin Youkilis (HBP, contusion to his right wrist) in the sixth, then singled in two runs of his own in the seventh. JD Drew reached three times, thanks to two walks and a single. Eric Hinske doubled, walked and homered.

Beckett (7-3-1-2-7, 108) was superb. A solo home run by Derek Jeter gave New York a 1-0 lead in the first. After two walks, also in the first inning, Beckett settled down. The Yankees managed only one baserunner over the next 19 batters -- when there were two outs in the seventh inning.

  2. I thought I'd get the best weather of the weekend at today's game. But, rainy and not as warm as predicted. Guess I'll have to wear the blue jacket.

Tim, look for me in section 43 today. Gee golly, that mention of what I'll be wearing seemed extemporaneous at the time. Keith, if you're there, I'll be wearing a yellow tank top. In section 3000.

  3. Hahaha, great pic...lets hope the greek god of steamed spinach returns for today's game.

RF Roof Deck was too chillin for my liking, not loud enough. And standing for a 4+ hour game was lame.

  4. Sorry, girlfriend's google account was signed in for that post.

  5. What are the lineups for today's game? Is Ellsbury playing?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Lineups:

Don't know yet. I usually get them from here. Maybe at 2 or 2:30?

  7. Two longest 9-inning games by time:

    4:45 - August 18, 2006
    NYY 14, Bos 11

    4:43 - September 14, 2007
    NYY 8, Bos 7

  8. So it is safe to say that the Sox don't win marathon games. Keep it short then. Don't let the spinach get cold.

  9. Hinske v Wang: 10-for-22, .909 SLG (and 7-for-10 against him last year with a 2.127 OPS!)

    Flo batters him .444/.531/.778

    Lowell does not: 4-for-22

Tek doesn't either: 1-for-13 (HR in 1st AB in Sept. 2005, then nothing)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't call him Passedballa for nothing:

Dumbo has 12 passed balls this year.

Tek has 4 and Mirabelli has 5.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Last night was the first time in Papelbon's career that he allowed three consecutive hits.

Rain? Globe: "The national weather service is forecasting a chance of showers in Boston today, mainly before 3:00 p.m. ..."

    Should be okay at 4:00.

So this game will end around 9 PM?!?!

  14. Wanker of the Day: MLB's Mike Bauman.

    His lede:

"The New York Yankees cannot be counted out of any game in which they still have at-bats remaining."

In 2007, the Red Sox have a better record than the Yankees when they are:

    trailing after 8 innings
    trailing after 7 innings
    trailing after 6 innings
    trailing after 5 innings
    trailing after 4 innings
    trailing after 3 innings
    trailing after 2 innings
    trailing after 1 inning
tied at the start of the game

    Pesky facts.

  18. This is funny:

    Mike Vaccaro, Post:

"They will remember this inning: the Yankees, the Red Sox, New York City, New England. They will remember what happened in the top of the eighth at Fenway Park this morning, next week, next month. If things happen the way it looks like they may well happen from here on in, they will remember this inning 50 years from now. Every detail. Every minute. Every second."

    Good lord. Calm down.

    ReplyDelete
  19. can someone explain to me what the spinach thing is? ive been off the face of the earth for the last couple of days.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nix:

In the Papi walkoff game on Wednesday, Tim posted:

Sorry for that quick drop in - I burned my fingers cooking dinner steaming spinach, and was watching the game and eating said dinner when Lugo made that play, resulting in a Remy/DO "and in a results based business, he got the job done"

    Later on, I posted:

I think "i burned my fingers steaming spinach" should be used in some type of future situation here, but i don't know for exactly what.

    I tried:

lester definitely steamed some spinach in the first inning.
    ??

    and it went from there.

I think it morphed from a bad thing to do to a good thing.

  21. my frend called me from his waiter job in boston yesterday afternoon and left me a message:
"andy pettitte is going to pitch like shit. how do i know this? 'cause he's here at Maggiano's eating lunch. You feel this food for hours! "
well he was right, but maybe oki and pap ate there too...

    ReplyDelete
  22. I guess it's too late to call this Maggiano's place and have some ziti sent over to the MFY clubhouse?

Maybe for Sunday, though. You know Billy'd wolf it down.

    ReplyDelete
  23. they will remember this inning 50 years from now. Every detail. Every minute. Every second.

    Mike Vaccaro is insane!

Also sounds like he's trying to channel the SI writer Gary Smith.

  24. I was totally stunned and disgusted last night. But today I am totally up for a win, and tomorrow's win, and the win after that, on to clinching the division, on to the playoffs.

    IT IS ON!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Enjoyed last night, until I went to bed!

I was thinking of you getting the bad news this morning.

"Lord Lynch gets the bad news..." /orsillo

I'm at work today, so it's GDGD for me. Goddamn GameDay.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Looks like Ed Grimley with McMoron today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ouch. Not a very good start today, either.

    ReplyDelete
  28. not even going to try the audio today.

    damon out 3-1.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ouch. All I saw was "in play, run(s) scored", that can only mean one thing.

    ReplyDelete
  30. All I saw was "in play, run(s) scored", that can only mean one thing.

When there is no one on base, yep.

    ReplyDelete
  31. L - I woke up at 6 am and switched on the recording. Bleary eyed I saw New York 8.

I'm surprised my neighbours (proper spelling!) didn't here the "I Don't Fucking Believe It".

And my football team had a miserable home defeat and the fans want to fire the manager.

And NOW, that tosser has scored.

    Happy Days.

    ReplyDelete
  32. And my football team had a miserable home defeat and the fans want to fire the manager.

    Who's your team?

    Happy days ahead, I promise.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm not in the mood for this bullshit, Josh.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It appears I can spell neighbour, but not hear!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am already hating the FOX announcers. And the score.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am already hating the FOX announcers.

Once again, Amy proves she is smart.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Has A-Rod walked to 2nd, or has he stolen a base. Gameday is not clear.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Of course, we spell it without the U. But I like the British/Canadian spelling. Very sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  39. my mlbtv keeps going black and having to be restarted. it's happened three times already.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oy. Come on Josh. Get it together.

    ReplyDelete
  41. slappy walked, then stole on the first pitch to dumbo. no throw by tek. then dumbo was franked as well.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Phew. OK, it's just one run.

I also thought about you, Lord. But at least you got a good night's sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thank you Matsui for getting out on the 1st pitch.

    30 pitch 1st innings.

    ReplyDelete
  44. ... and the chokers strand a pair.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Allan, can you post a link to the glossary in this game thread?

    ReplyDelete
  46. (Amy, we're in separate workplaces today. It's not that we only communicate through comments. :) )

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah, yeah. I forgot which "we" I was referring to here. Are most posters here Canadian? I perhaps should adjust my spelling to meet your standards. :)

    Why no LBJ today?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I hate FOX. Luckily I've got the radio (although there's a delay...) I hear the ball hitting the mit when FOX shows the pitcher in his windup.

Oh well. Better than these idiots on tv.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have NFL Total Access on my TV, Gameday Live on my Desktop and Joy of Sox on my laptop.

I am not married and don't have any kids, dependents or what not in the house! You didn't need to guess.

Now hit some fucking runs off this fake.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think you should add dong, even though it's mostly self-explanatory. But hey, it's for journalism!

    ReplyDelete
  51. OK, I just have to ask this: How do you two work and moderate and watch the game and score? Just what kind of jobs do you have and how do I get one?

    Lead man on...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Are most posters here Canadian?

No, only a few. Tim, Woti-Woti and us, that's all I can think of right now.

    Why no LBJ today?

    Tito is mad at me?

    Should I add "dong"?

    Of course!

    ReplyDelete
  53. nice hit by wang and up the middle by fy.

make' em hate you more, yook.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And for what it's worth, FOX has the worst picture quality in baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Youk, get even. Don't get mad.

    ReplyDelete
  56. How do you two work and moderate and watch the game and score? Just what kind of jobs do you have and how do I get one?

We are on our day-jobs that support our "real" (although often unpaid) lives as writers. We work at corporate law firms on the weekends.

It's boring but it works very well with writing. And following games. And moderating comments.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 2 on, 1 out. We need some black magic. Come on, Doc!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Two on - we need to make this man pay.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well, we need some magic. and connection. Maybe not black magic, but hey.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Magic of any colour, and speaking any language, will be appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Go, Papi!

Law firms let you watch the game and moderate a blog---wow. Law firms either have changed or Canada really is laid back. When I worked at a large law firm back in the 70s, we had to account for all our time and bill accordingly. I hated that, and it drove me out. Along with other things.

    YAY--score tied! I love Lowell.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yes, I was also hoping for more than one on GDGD... but we're still batting.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Keep the pressure on. Two men in scoring position. I am telling Tek NOT to swing at the high pitches. Will he listen?

    ReplyDelete
  64. 'Tek is 0 for 9 on he homestand, 2 for his last 19. But you just gotta squeak one through the infield! Dooo it. Peer pressure.

    ReplyDelete
  65. multiple shots of abreu out in right shielding his eyes with his glove. he had no clue on flo's hit and is blind out there.

and if you have ever stood out in RF during BP at this time of day, you know how tough it is to see anything.

    fuckin' pinella.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Law firms let you watch the game and moderate a blog---wow. Law firms either have changed or Canada really is laid back.

We did it in NYC for a zillion years, where it is anything but laid back.

We're not lawyers. We're support staff. When there's work, we do it. When there's downtime...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Fox says LBJ is good looking. THought you should know, L-girl.

    Damn, stranded two MOB.

    ReplyDelete
  68. 'Tek hit it hard, we get out with 1... Just the one, but it's one. But Varitek got some good wood on it.

Let's see if Beckett's settled down a tad.

    ReplyDelete
  69. We get three hits, 1 run, no DPs and Wang still only threw 14 pitches?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Fox says LBJ is good looking.

So they're dumb but not blind.

    ReplyDelete
  71. yeah saw fox's lyndon-cam. poor tv-less L.

so far, not a lick o' work here. hope it stays that way until after the game -- 9 or 10 pm!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ahh, thanks for the explanation about the firms. It sounds like a good way to earn a living and have the time and freedom to write. Sounds ideal to me.

Tek at least made contact. But he is even getting to me....

    ReplyDelete
  73. We get three hits, 1 run, no DPs and Wang still only threw 14 pitches?

    He never throws too many.

    ReplyDelete
  74. poor tv-less L.

Note to self: bring binocs to games next week.

    ReplyDelete
  75. mlbtv is really shitty today. restarted about 7 times that inning.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Ahh, thanks for the explanation about the firms. It sounds like a good way to earn a living and have the time and freedom to write. Sounds ideal to me.

Thank you. It has served us very well. I've done a dozen or so jobs to support my writing, but this has been the best. (Thus my 17 yrs of experience.)

The downside is that in NYC we worked 24 hrs/wk to earn what we earn here in 40.

    ReplyDelete
  77. FUCK YEAH with a FUCK YEAH play!

    ReplyDelete
  78. why is HGH breathing so hard? is he gonna have a heart attack in the dugout?

    ReplyDelete
  79. I am in fact a lawyer (please, no hissing), but I do not practice law and haven't since 1982. I teach at a law school in Springfield, MA. My students all know about my Red Sox mania.

    ReplyDelete
  80. RS, did you see Pedro's line today?

    6 IP, 7 H, 1 R(ER), 0 BB, 9 K
    98p, 68st.

    ReplyDelete
  81. OK, good inning by Beckett. Does he have a JOS nickname? I haven't see one yet.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I teach at a law school in Springfield, MA. My students all know about my Red Sox mania.

    Cool. :)

No hissing here. We have friends who are lawyers doing amazing and important work. Not the ones we work for, of course, but hey. Gotta earn a living.

    ReplyDelete
  83. ND for Pedro because the bullpen blew it (sounds familiar) 5-3 PHI top 9

    ReplyDelete
  84. Better Josh.

Note to self. Find more trash to throw out during the next inning.

    I'm not superstitious.

    ReplyDelete
  85. 0 BB and 9 K

    Very nice. Go Petey!

Looking forward to seeing him work next month.

    ReplyDelete
  86. When do the Tigers play today? I can't follow, mod, post AND look for scores.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Looking forward to seeing him work next month.

    me too

    ReplyDelete
  88. NY law firms pay outrageously. My daughter will be earning almost as much as I do (she starts work on Monday) at a very very small NY firm, and I have been out of law school for almost 30 years. The big firms pay almost twice as much. And even paralegals make a lot of money. It's really sort of sick, if you ask me. Not a life I want. No way.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Does he have a JOS nickname? I haven't see one yet.

All last season, I said he had rocks in his head. That probably doesn't count.

SoSH was sometimes calling him LaLoosh after the Bull Durham pitcher who insisted on throwing as hard as possible and then was tagged for tape measure HR.

    Not so applicable this year.

    ReplyDelete
  90. NY law firms pay outrageously.

Indeed. But that doesn't always trickle down to our level. Our last jobs in NYC, it did. My replacement, however, was hired at 2/3 of my salary.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Wang settled down also. Perhaps a pitcher's duel today.

I still miss Pedro. Glad he is doing well, at least until we have to play against him in the WS.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Pitches in AB against Wang:

    2 3 2 3 2 2 3 2 4 = 23 in 2 IP

    ReplyDelete
  93. I usually love a good pitcher's duel but could we please hit and score runs like crazy today?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Amy, this blog started out life as a Pedro appreciation website.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Pedro is the reason I follow the Boston Red Sox..

    ReplyDelete
  96. I wish I had known about this site back then! It's funny that what got me intrigued here was the debate about an apostrophe. I just knew this wasn't the typical fan site. I had been posting on OTM, not nearly as much fun!

    ReplyDelete
  97. There is a link to the old Pedro site (which was pedro45.net) under Important Stuff. I moved all the files over to my 1918 website, so everything still exists.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think I started the Pedro stuff in 2000 sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Ed Grimley is a martin short lookalike.
    FUCK YOU FOX.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Nice post, Lord. So are you really a lord? This place is endlessly interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Pedro is the reason I follow the Boston Red Sox..

Yay! Very cool. I loved him even in my... earlier days. Before the conversion.

It's funny that what got me intrigued here was the debate about an apostrophe. I just knew this wasn't the typical fan site.

    :-)

But just FYI, the game threads are relatively new. They only took off this season. In the Petey days there weren't even comments!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Well, the blogosphere has come a long way in a short time. A year ago I was still not sure what a blog was. Then again, fifteen years ago I didn't know what the Internet was.

    ReplyDelete
  103. The "Lord" came from a trip to Australia nearly five years ago. A long story....

    ReplyDelete
  104. But just FYI, the game threads are relatively new.

I looked back recently and they really started in mid-May of this year.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I like when A-Rod hits balls off himself.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Really? That recently? At least now I don't feel like I was missing all this for seasons.

    YAY, Beckett. NICE K!

    ReplyDelete
  107. HEY AROD STICK THOSE GLASSES UP YR ASSES!

    ReplyDelete
  108. I like it when A-Rod watches strike threes right down the middle of the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Without the blogosphere, we would have come to Canada without knowing a soul. The friends who were waiting for us up here were all from my blog - our whole support network. And we are part of that for many other people making the same move.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I may have to listen tomorrow night so I can hear the loud anti-Roger chants that are sure to be thundering throughout the park.

    ReplyDelete
  111. ok let's get something going here...

    ReplyDelete
  112. At least for the first 2 innings -- until Tubby is dispatched to the showers.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Can we please make Wang throw more pitches?

It is sort of amazing how the Internet can create social networks. Hopefully, most are for the good.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Liking the glossary.

Not liking the lack of pitches CMW is throwing.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Fox graphic has DP as having the highest avg for a rookie 2B since 1900 -- at .327 he's right now 10 pts higher than a couple of deadballers, -- one of whom was called Duke (not Lord).

Duke Kenworthy, didn't catcher the other guy, something like Vioxx.

    ReplyDelete
  116. it's another operation for our team surgeon

    ReplyDelete
  117. "didn't catcher the other guy"

    :>)

    let's go, doctor d.

    ReplyDelete
  118. At least Papi made him work a bit. Now Lowell--tire him out. Foul some balls off.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Flo: 3rd consecutive season of 100+ walks

    ReplyDelete
  120. Two BBs. But not on many pitches. Can Drew keep it going? Just make him throw a lot of pitches. Or better.

    ReplyDelete
  121. do it for joy nation! we've been defending you all year...!

    ReplyDelete
  122. And now, it's the newest edition of... Star Search!

Find the biggest A-List names in the crowd at Fenway! It's bigger than the game itself!

    ReplyDelete
  123. the wild wang.

    time for some action, jd!

    ReplyDelete
  124. come on two out hits is what we need!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Another walk! Oh, no, up to Tek again with two out?? Will he just not swing??

    ReplyDelete
  126. All of his pitches are drifting.

Welp, we need execution here, 'Tek. Patience, and/or execution. There are 2 out.

    ReplyDelete
  127. good work, jd.

now cap'n, do it for amy!

    ReplyDelete
  128. guidry looking annoyed in dugout, shaking his head.

    good eye, werd.

    ReplyDelete
  129. WHY is he swinging? Isn't he watching? I hate being mad at Tek. But I am...

    ReplyDelete
  130. DAMN. Wasn't he getting the same tips the first three batters got? I am just not happy with him.

    ReplyDelete
  131. how come jd friggin drew can work out a walk and captain teflon can't?

    ReplyDelete
  132. wang doubled his pitch count that inning: 14-9-23 = 46

    JB: 30-8-20 = 58

    ReplyDelete
  133. He's getting to be like an old boyfriend whose prior charms are becoming really annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  134. its pretty bad wthat im suprised when tek gets clutch hits now.

    ReplyDelete
  135. im suprised when tek gets clutch hits now.

    yup me too

    Jason Varitef?

    Varibelli

    ReplyDelete
  136. jesus becketts pitch count is pretty high, no?

    ReplyDelete
  137. All the garbage has been taken out.

    What next?

    Tut tut Tek

    ReplyDelete
  138. Varitef? What am I missing in that reference? Or is it a typo?

    ReplyDelete
  139. i called him captain teflon, allan took it from there

    ReplyDelete
  140. Ahh, teflon. Gotcha. Thanks. Sorry to be a bit slow. I saw the Capt. Teflon, but just didn't then see the connection.

    ReplyDelete
  141. And not only is his offense lacking, but we've been questioning some of his pitch selections recently, too. It's certainly more of an untouchable area for criticism, but with Okajima and Dice you'd notice it a bit. And Gagné, even.

    ReplyDelete
  142. shemp backs away from the pitch -- and then it breaks back over the plate for strike 3!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Yes, I made that comment last night (I am beginning to feel like a bad girlfriend, talking about my guy behind his back) about pitch selection with respect to DiceK. I still haven't seen any media comments on that though.

    GO, BECKETT! Nice inning!!

    ReplyDelete
  144. 6 Ks.

Regrets has left the batters box.

    ReplyDelete
  145. ish, you're right re pitch selections. allan fumed about that w/ beckett all of last year.

otoh, i give him major props for HH's gem. a rookie throwing a no-no has got to rely heavily on his catcher.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Amy. My girlfriend is a Yankee.

    That's bad.

And I've spoken about to this to redsock on Threadsox - she will never convert.

  150. Lord, my husband is a Yankee fan. We need a support group.

My comment, however, was about Varitek, who has been my favorite Sox player for a while. But he is just pissing me off now.

  152. Yeah, he called a terrific game with HH... I wonder how often Dice (and the other starts) shake him off. He's shown that he can call a good game, but I just wonder how often they shake him off. A guy like Varitek, with his reputation, is not a guy I'd think you'd want to be shaking off.

But I really don't know much about the pitcher/catcher relationship.
