G150: Yankees 4, Red Sox 3

Yankees - 000 010 030 - 4 7 1
Red Sox - 100 000 011 - 3 5 0
The seven-batter rally against a shaky Rivera falls short, as Tiz pops to Jeter in short center with the bases loaded. And CI's three-run homer into the Monster Seats off Schilling -- who maybe should have been pulled a few batters earlier -- is the difference.

The Sox blew an excellent chance at scoring off Joba in the seventh. Hisnke doubled and was bunted to third. But Lugo fanned and Ellsbury grounded to first. The Doctor doubled his pleasure and homered in the eighth, finally tagging an earned run on JtC's ERA.

***

The Tigers won this afternoon 6-4, as the Twins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Detroit is now only 2 GB the Yankees for the wild card spot.

***

Roger Clemens (4.45, 98 ERA+) / Curt Schilling (3.93, 116 ERA+)

If the Yankees want to entertain even a slim hope of winning the East, Fat Billy has to come through. More importantly, his team's wild card lead has been cut to 2.5 games (the Tigers play the Twins at 2 PM). And we know he's always done so well under pressure.

So while Wimpy Clemens promises to pay us Tuesday for a hamburger today

Schilling will rely on the breakfast of champions:

Steamed.

Papi strides to the plate. Papi strides to the plate. A base hit, that is all I ask because LBJ will score the winning run.

Rob said...

A single wins it, by the way.

Rob said...

We've got Ellsbury on second.

Amy said...

I hope Papi is calmer than I am.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm feverishly refreshing gameday on on my phone. Come on Papi!

Jere said...

oh well. they are one of the better second-place teams.

allan said...

shit.

that was some baseball game.

David said...

at least we didn't get swept

Amy said...

Well, at least we made it close and interesting. And Tek actually started it. And we are still four and a half ahead. And SChilling looked great.

And I still don't like Miller!

laura k said...

2 close losses and big win

jere has the right idea, they're a decent 2nd place team. and on to october we go.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

If you had asked me at the beginning of the season, before any games were played, how I would feel with a 4-game lead over the Yankees with 12 to play, where all 12 games remaining were with teams with losing records, I'd tell you I felt pretty good about it! So see everyone tomorrow (or is it Tuesday?) at ThreadSox. Have fun at the games!

Rob said...

At least we didn't roll over in the 9th. Really made it interesting. Two of the game's best going at it, with high stakes. The tying run at third, winning run at second.

And this all coming in an inning that Rivera started and had a 2 run lead to work with.

This blows big time, but you've got to be satisfied with the effort. Everyone should. It wasn't over until it was over. The Red Sox lost, but they lost playing some of their best baseball.

allan said...

7 batters and 29 pitches for mo.

laura k said...

ish, you're right, that's important. it's horrible when you think your team (any team) mails it in at the end, looks at the scoreboard and quits. this team never does that, to my eyes.

nixon33 said...

too little too late.

laura k said...

too late, but you think they gave up earlier? for whatever reason, they couldn't solve fat billy tonight. he's still got something left, however he's doing it.

allan said...

we'll hand fruitbat his ass next month, assuming the chokers can make it that far.

...

now the sox have to fly all the way to toronto at night and play tomorrow. i expect them to be exhausted (oy.)

Rob said...

This one of those unique losses where it's really hard to be angry at anyone in particular, I think. Can't really be mad at Schilling... Look at the game he threw before that ONE pitch! It was amazing! Can't be mad at Ortiz, either. He had 2 strikes and had to fight 'em off.

allan said...

i blame bellhorn.

nixon33 said...

ugh, one strike away.

Rob said...

In other news, we're almost at the record for comments...

Rob said...

SCREW YOU, CESAR CRESPO!!!

allan said...

i'm on the fence about tito not pulling curt 2 or 3 batters earlier.

Sarah Haendler said...

I blame TWC. Not because it can rationally be blamed on them, just because I hate them, and I shouldn't have had to 'watch' the end of that on my phone.

Poor Lord Lynch, he went to bed with a slight lead!

laura k said...

why are you yelling at cesar crespo?

SoSock said...

It WAS a helluva game.
And I must say I feel SO much better now than I did when I posted my late and long comment Friday night (or probably Sat. AM)
I missed yesterday's game entirely. Was way the hell up in the mountains at a beautiful outdoor wedding for a dear friend. No sports input at all, but it was not missed.
When I got home at 1 AM and read about the game on the website, I felt 100% better, knowing we were not going to be swept.
Schilling's performance tonight (despite the 1 big boo-boo) and the near come-back against Rivera have increased that confidence.
We probably will face them in the postseason and I think we'll prevail.
JMO :)
(Or maybe you can't be pessimistic when you get a new grandbaby) BIG :)

Amy said...

So are you Toronto folks going to the games? If so, who will be around to moderate?

laura k said...

Poor Lord Lynch, he went to bed with a slight lead!

And he'll blame us!

I would have pulled Schilling earlier, but I also understand Tito not. I wish he didn't let Schilling call the shots. It's like Curt manages himself. Not such a good idea.

Amy said...

Yes, Lord Lynch should never go to sleep.

allan said...

Shoulda cashed in that run against JTC in the 7th -- Hinske on third with 1 out.

Hell, we had a chance to batter the Con Man in the 1st -- 1st and 2nd (one run in) with 1 out -- while he was yapping at the umps.

laura k said...

We're going to all the Sox games at Skydome this season. Plus someone who reads my blog got us half-price tickets! It's been a lot of fun.

allan said...

Amy - Read the first comment in this thread.

Colin said...

Honestly I'm surprisingly not really upset about this loss. Schilling pitched quality innings and we nearly staged a great comeback. I think given what happened this weekend and what we did to their bullpen, our offense has no problem against them.

Baltimore I bet will pose a problem for the Yankees and if we can get going against Toronto, things will look even better.

Props to the offense and a small props to Gagne who has actually proving to be a rather effective anti-Yankee pitcher.

allan said...

Fuck Spinach.

Amy said...

Now there's a real advantage to living in Canada. You can actually get to see games live. It is just so hard to get Fenway tickets. We only went twice this season.

nixon33 said...

man o man. we had our chances.

Amy said...

THanks, RS. I missed that first post. I came in late.

laura k said...

one reason we chose toronto was that it's an AL city.

but that's not why we chose canada :)

nite all! have fun gamethreading in threadsox tomorrow night. (amy, you'll have to register. see the first comment in this thread for the link.)

Rob said...

I said screw you, Cesar Crespo just because. Same reason Allan said he blames Bellhorn. Just... no one else to blame, really. So let's blame random guys!

Amy said...

Good night, and enjoy the games. I am sure there will be more Sox fans there than Jay fans. I will check out the chat on Threadsox.

laura k said...

Now there's a real advantage to living in Canada.

It's sooooo hard not to make a political comment right now... I'll just take out my card that guarantees me taxpayer-funded health care and smile at it.

Good night!

Jim said...

Fucking Malphabet, fucking Jeter, fucking Yankee horseshoes--Schill makes one bad pitch and Fruitbat suddenly finds his shit on the last 2 to Papi. Jesus. Still, thanks to Lowell, ol' Slow Joe's Yankee record still stands (sorry, Slobba).

allan said...

Nine more comments, come on!

laura k said...

thanks ish. i was confused. now i'm laughing after a loss, so that's good.

ok, good night, for real.

Rob said...

Goodnight, L.

I wonder if Tim Wakefield was at the edge of his seat like we all were, watching from Toronto.

allan said...

Shit, if this is how amped we get when the division is salted away, an ALCS is gonna kill us all.

Better start stocking the liquor cabinet!

...

Game 4 of the ALCS will be played in exactly one month!!!

Rob said...

Here's a little somethin' somethin'...

Baltimore beats the Jays in 12 innings, 8-6.

The momentum works both ways. Baltimore wins, faces the Yankees. Jays lose, face the Sox.

allan said...

I can't remember now what started the whole I Blame Bellhorn business.

Now Crespo was the suckiest suck that ever sucked.

Maybe Marc Sullivan was worse. Nepotism at its finest.

nixon33 said...

yeah, i feel bad for shcil such a good performance. is it me or does he give up a lot of HRs to the MFY?
hell of a battle. just too bad a lot of those hard hit balls off fatso didnt find field.
all in all we did what we had to do right? just win one. even though im not psyched about blowing the 1st game and falling short of the comeback tonight, we didnt get swept.
fuck, it would have been nice. we really had a chance to sweep.

Rob said...

Now Crespo was the suckiest suck that ever sucked.

Maybe that's why he's so easy to remember. Think of one obscure Red Sox player who sucked. That's the first one that comes to my mind.

And then there's Bobby Jones.

Rob said...

Both Cleveland and the Angels lost, so the AL standings remain the same.

2.5 GA on both CLE and LAA.

Jere said...

"Now there's a real advantage to living in Canada. You can actually get to see games live. It is just so hard to get Fenway tickets. We only went twice this season."

Amy--I don't say this to be a prick. But try checking redsox.com. Tickets are always being released. "It's hard to get tickets" isn't a myth, but it's definitely an overstatement. And be there in the preseason when tickets are released online. I get to plenty of games a year at Fenway, and I'm not special, I promise you. Although my mom would disagree:)

Jere said...

Grebeck was horrible.

allan said...

HR allowed this year by Schilling:

NYY - 10
LAA - 3
Interleague - 2
Others - 1

fuuuuukin yikes.

David said...

I was hoping to see the Sox clinch it in Tampa (actually St. Pete) next weekend. That does not look likely, now.

nixon33 said...

so it wasnt just my imagination.

nixon33 said...

thanks for looking up those stats, RS.

Rob said...

What is the magic number for making the playoffs?

Anybody?

allan said...

I did some Crespo research when he was sucking.

I think in 60+ plate appearances, he had only one 3 ball count. He sucked and he hacked and he sucked.

allan said...

so it wasnt just my imagination.

I would say No.

How many solo I wonder?

Jere said...

I want to see the Sox clinch at home. I should be able to, but if we clinch on the road, I'll at least get to see their triumphant return, since I've got tix for the first game of the homestand. Actually, looking atthe schedule, it's looking more likely we will clinch at home.

Jere said...

90-60 after 150. Nice.

nixon33 said...

vs oak, or minn? any predictions?

allan said...

With the two losses in this series, this means that someone will win the W-L contest for sure. So that's a plus.

Rob said...

One of my friends, who claims she is a huge, diehard Red Sox fan, went to a movie theater tonight to watch the Patriots game. Then she comes back and says, "I knew Schilling was going to get owned. It wasn't worth my time to watch him look old."

Big fan, indeed. 10 pitches per inning until the 8th, and throwing 95mph heat in the 8th... Yeah, he looked real old.

nixon33 said...

ish, that sounds really annoying.

Rob said...

One thing you also have to look at with a smile is that Okajima and Papelbon didn't need to be used the last two nights. That gives both of them (especially Okajima, who could really use it more) two days of rest.

David said...

I keep telling myself that if th e red sox finish 6-6 the yankees need to finish 11-2 to catch us.

nixon33 said...

wake gets 17 tomorrow

Jere said...

re: predictions. If I had to guess, I'll say we clinch against Oakland, with me there cheering loudly.

Rob said...

ish, that sounds really annoying.

Yeah, it certainly can be. A lot of rushing to judgement. I don't think she could last very long here. :)

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Magic number to clinch a playoff berth is 6.

nixon33 said...

re: predictions. If I had to guess, I'll say we clinch against Oakland, with me there cheering loudly.

with a walkoff drew HR? just to continue the tradition of right fielder #7 clinching shit vs oakland?

Rob said...

So, the best case scenario of clinching playoff berth is the last game of the road trip. That would be 6 straight wins for both the Red Sox and Tigers.

Unlikely, but it's whatcha hope for. Of course, it could get done on Wednesday, but that means the Sox would have to win three and the Tigers win three. Don't want to be seeing the Tigers lose any, though.

That's it. Too much late-night baseball thinking. It's time for bed.

RS, if I don't talk to you or L before tomorrow night, have a ton of fun... and bring a sign! Represent Joy Nation! (Or not, it's up to you, haha.)

tim said...

Back to Canada now...will have a full report of Friday's Fenway trip and some pics tomorrow hopefully...

Looks like the spinach supply ran a lil short tonight, was listening to the game once I was close enough to Canada after landing in Buffalo...damn you, MFY.

At least the Pats managed to bring the spinach steamin' pots with plates for lids to Foxboro tonight...I've got secret video footage of it ;-) [/irrelevant]

Jere said...

I'm not predicting any Drew homers. But a division-clinching HR might give him confidence going to the post-season.

tim said...

I would also like to point out, for an early morning chuckle, that during Friday's game I kept using Joy nicknames much to the bewilderment of everyone I was with...

i.e. "C'MON FLO!"
"YEAH OCOC!"
Bottom 9 - "COME ON, LBJ!"

My chants of HGH got some laughs during Giambi's stellar 1B fielding, as I explained that it actually stands for How Giambi Hits...

However if anything good came out of that awful 8th, I, for obvious reasons, did not pop a Papelboner in front of my mother.

Anyway, more to come later...

Lord Lynch said...

Seems I can't even go to sleep without a lead being given up.

You lot are hopeless.

Seriously dis-chuffed. My beloved and her f*cking Yankee spouting better not ring me today or she'll get an earful.

s1c said...

725 such a round number, but 726 seems much better! Real quick before I go drive the car to an early inspection (god I hate dry cleaners).

Can argue both ways about when Francona should have pulled Schilling. No time right now, but I am sure we can pull up some stat about number of pitches for Schilling and ERA. I seem to remember that after 86 pitches Schilling really stunk, but after 100 he was really good again. CI was on the 90th?.

Good comeback in the 9th, and that is a set up for game 7 in the ALCS. Same situation, same batter and the results are euphoria.

RS & L-girl - have fun at the games. If you take pics I expect RS to be in charge of the Camera, that way we will see something besides LBJ!! ;).

Toodle loo, off for my 6:30 appointment.

laura k said...
