G150: Yankees 4, Red Sox 3

Yankees - 000 010 030 - 4 7 1
Red Sox - 100 000 011 - 3 5 0
The seven-batter rally against a shaky Rivera falls short, as Tiz pops to Jeter in short center with the bases loaded. And CI's three-run homer into the Monster Seats off Schilling -- who maybe should have been pulled a few batters earlier -- is the difference.

The Sox blew an excellent chance at scoring off Joba in the seventh. Hisnke doubled and was bunted to third. But Lugo fanned and Ellsbury grounded to first. The Doctor doubled his pleasure and homered in the eighth, finally tagging an earned run on JtC's ERA.

***

The Tigers won this afternoon 6-4, as the Twins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Detroit is now only 2 GB the Yankees for the wild card spot.

***

Roger Clemens (4.45, 98 ERA+) / Curt Schilling (3.93, 116 ERA+)

If the Yankees want to entertain even a slim hope of winning the East, Fat Billy has to come through. More importantly, his team's wild card lead has been cut to 2.5 games (the Tigers play the Twins at 2 PM). And we know he's always done so well under pressure.

So while Wimpy Clemens promises to pay us Tuesday for a hamburger today

Schilling will rely on the breakfast of champions:

Steamed.

Laura and I are going to all three Skydome games, so game threads for the Blue Jays series will be with Cakey at ThreadSox.

Rob said...

We'll certainly be keeping an eye on the Detroit/Minnesota game that starts at 2:10 today.

DET: Jair Jurrjens (2-1, 3.15)
MIN: Scott Baker (9-7, 4.17)

Ish is on OOT Scoreboard Watch!

...

I read that other people had trouble with MLBTV cutting to black during the entire game yesterday. Really hope that doesn't happen again.

Rob said...

RS, does L's blog work for you when you go to it? I sent my sister the link and she told me it wasn't loading, then I tried and it didn't load for me, either.

allan said...

No, it's not. Down in the lower left corner of the computer screen, the URL flickers on an doff very fast, like it's trying to load and cannot. I was getting that both at home and work. I'll let her know.

Spencer Brown said...

I read that other people had trouble with MLBTV cutting to black during the entire game yesterday.

It was a nationally televised game (ESPN2), so it should have been completely blacked out of MLB TV.

allan said...

They never are though. I'm always able to see the Fox and Sunday nights games.

allan said...

MLB.com:

"Could it finally be? Clemens insists it will be, though after having a pair of cortisone injections in his right elbow, his first Fenway Park start since 2003 could be a game-time decision."

Will Billy be a Koward?

Rob said...

Who would they use in his place?

Hughes it set to pitch tomorrow. Would they pitch him tonight?

charlie pioli said...

I had a dream last night that the Yankees released fat Billy after tonights game. Weird huh? Lets hope that that dream comes true.

allan said...

Earlier they were saying it would be either FB or Hughes, so I guess so.

Granderson hits a lead-off homer for Detroit.

Rob said...

Curtis Granderson hit a lead-off home run against Scott Baker. It's 1-0 Tigers after half an inning.

nick said...

I missed yesterday's game due to work and may miss much of today's, but it's the buzz round these parts, for sure.

have fun and hopefully I'll be by later.

Rob said...

Granderson hit his 80th extra-base hit, tying with A-Rod for the AL lead.

Wow.

Rob said...

I've got GameDay on for Detroit. Ramon Santigo hits (in play, run(s)) we'll see.

nixon33 said...

who would we rather play in the playoffs?
1st and 2nd round?

allan said...

I'm trying to be productive here at work (at least until 8 PM), but I will approve stuff as often as I can.

Go Tigers!

Rob said...

Infield single for Santiago that also produced an error. Timo Perez scores.

In Play, Run(s)

Another run?

Rob said...

Brandon Inge bunts Santiago home. It's 3-0 Detroit!

allan said...

Sounds good early!

allan said...

I hope Fatass is watching. Increase the pressure!!!

Rob said...

Granderson hit an infield single, then stole second the very next pitch after a pitchout.

Rob said...

Polanco grounds out to end that threat.

But hey, it's 3-0! Very nice.

Rob said...

I've been watching the Braves/Nationals on TBS. In Washington, Wily Mo Pena is known as "WMP". Weapon of Mass Production.

Rob said...

3 quick outs around a walk, and down go the Twinkies. 3-0 after 2.

They had the Presidential race in Washington, with the huge mascots running down the first base line. Looks like Abe Lincoln pulled a hamstring. Ouch. Pulled up lame, and had to be helped off the field by Thomas Jefferson.

Rob said...

Sheffield starts the third with a double.

allan said...

In Washington, Wily Mo Pena is known as "WMP". Weapon of Mass Production.

Hey, we did that!

Booooo. Make up your own nickname, Nats!

Rob said...

Mags singled Sheffield over to third, then Guillen grounded into a DP, and Sheffield scored.

4-0

Rob said...

Jair Jurrgens has walked one and hasn't allowed a hit through the first 2 1/3.

Rob said...

Phillies have a 5-2 lead on the Mets in the bottom of the 5th.

Tim Hudson just hit a double into left field. 19th hit for Hudson this year. 19 for 70.

Rob said...

Quick and easy 1-2-3 for Jurrgens.

Rob said...

Tigers don't score in the 4th. Error, sac bunt, a fielder's choice (out at third), and then a flyout.

Rob said...

1-2-3 fourth for Minnesota.

Jere said...

Tigers go to Cleveland, but then have KC and Minny at home before ending in Chicago.

Yanks have a Tor, a TB, and 2 Bal series left. Note, these three are teams they haven't been too good against this season.

We go bottom 5 in Minny, still 4-0 us.

Rob said...

Tigers waste a lead-off single by Polanco. Baker mows through the heart of the order, F3, F8, F7.

Rob said...

8 pitch, 1-2-3 5th for Jurrgens.

He's rolling. 72 pitches/45 strikes

Rob said...

Mets have tied the Phillies, 5-5, but the Phillies have the bases loaded in the 6th. Mets have committed 5 errors today. 2 by Jose Reyes on one play.

allan said...

Come on Mets!

Today's Stick It To The MFY Trifecta:

Wins for Mets, Tigers and Red Sox!

Rob said...

Tigers go down 1-2-3. Bot 6

Jere said...

Great job by Jurrjens today, 5.3 no hit innings before the double. The Tigers should be pumped for the Cleveland series. Is Bonderman shut down or what?

Rob said...

Jair Jurrgens gives up his first hit, a double to Nick Punto. He's on second with 1 out.

Rob said...

Tyner just hit a triple to right, so Minnesota's on the board, it's 4-1.

allan said...

Bonderman -- looks like it, yes.

allan said...

Crazy Mets linescore:

PHI 021 115
NYM 001 13

...

DET 121 000
MIN 000 001

phils and twins still batting in their most recent innings

Rob said...

Kansas City's leading Cleveland 4-3 in the top of the 9th at the Jake...

Top of the 8th in Toronto, TOR and BAL tied at 4...

Philadelphia got 5 runs in the top of the 6th inning, it's 10-5 PHI.

And in Minnesota, Jair Jurrgens has come out of the game. He threw 90 pitches, and in comes Tim Byrdak.

Rob said...

NL Central race: MIL leading CIN 5-0, 6th inning in Cincinnati.

Cubs have a 4-0 lead at St. Louis into the 6th.

---

Tim Hudson is coming back out for the 9th inning in Washington, trying to throw the first complete game for Atlanta all season. 3-0.

Rob said...

Byrdak does his job... F6, F8 to retire the side. 4-1 Detroit after 6.

Zenslinger said...

If FB pitches, I foresee about 4 innings of work, maybe 3 or 4 ER to go with it. Then it's onto the bullpen.

Rob said...

Houston is pounding Pittsburgh, 13-2 in the bottom of the 5th.

For the Braves, there has not been a year in the Braves franchise history where nobody threw a complete game.

First play in the ninth: Grounder to second, but Kelly Johnson airmailed the throw to first.

Rob said...

Very quick 1-2-3 top 7th for DET

Rob said...

Hudson completes the game, working around a lead-off E4. F7, 6-4 FC (for Wily Mo), then F5. Complete game shutout.

Hudson: 9 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. 100 pitches, 72 strikes.

Rob said...

RS, Greg Dobbs hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the 6th, part of that 5 run inning.

Rob said...

for the Phils.

Rob said...

Michael Cuddyer hit a ball to Byrdak, who threw it wildly to first. E1, Cuddyer to third. Now the Tigers pay for it. In play, run(s)

Rob said...

Sac fly and an error on Timo Perez.

Each team has 2 errors. 4-2 Detroit.

Lord Lynch said...

I may well be in the land of nod when the game is on, so London will be on tenterhooks until morning.

Let's down the TCM.

allan said...

hey tigers -- stop screwing around with the errors. jeez.

Rob said...

Chris Heintz hit a single to left, Brian Buschner was cut down at home. Then Luis Rodriguez hit a single... Men on first and second, 2 out.

Jere said...

As one to one point five of you may know, I have a little problem with Timo Perez. Bobby Valentine put him in the 2000 World Series against the Yanks, just assuming this young kid would do fine. Wrong. He made a dumb baserunning mistake which cost the Mets Game 1. Or 2, maybe, I don't know.

I've noticed in this Tigers game, the hit to break up the no-hitter went toward him, and was a "soft line drive." I'm imagining him botching the play somehow. ish, can you describe the double?

Now Timo makes a fielding error. I just can't believe this guy's still playing--let alone still helping the Yanks.

Rob said...

KC beats Cleveland, 4-3.

Rob said...

F6 for Nick Punto, and that'll end the threat for Minnesota, and the 7th inning.

Getting tighter. 4-2 DET.

allan said...

david wright hit a dong. 10-6 phils

Rob said...

Jere, I've got gameday. It just said "soft line drive", but a soft line drive double doesn't sound clean.

Unless Punto was being aggressive.

Rob said...

Pat Neshek walks the lead-off man in the 8th (Sheff)

Sing to me, McCarver.

Devine said...

Guillen doubles, takes 3rd on throw home, Sheffield scores. 5-2 Tigers.

Jere said...

5-2 MC9.

Rob said...

Carlos Guillen doubles down the right field line, scoring Sheffield.

5-2!

Rob said...

In play, run(s) for Pudge!

Rob said...

It was a sac fly to right for Ivan Rodriguez, scoring Guillen.

6-2!

Devine said...

Sac fly. 6-2 Tigers in Minnesota, top 8th.

Rob said...

Jere's man Perez doubles to center. Brent Clevlen pinch-runs for Perez.

Rob said...

Inning ending 1-4-3 DP.

6-2 DET going into the bottom of the 8th.

allan said...

Man, was I rooting for the Mets in 2000. They really rolled over.

Rob said...

Lead-off walk to Jason Tyner issued by Tim Byrdak, Jim Leyland comes out to get him. It's Fernando Rodney to the rescue.

Jere said...

I couldn't believe it when I was at a Pawtucket game this summer, and Timo was starting for the Toledo MudHens. And now he's actually back in the bigs. I see he's hitting pretty well, though. I just hope they're not counting on him.

s1c said...

If FB pitches, I foresee about 4 innings of work, maybe 3 or 4 ER to go with it. Then it's onto the bullpen.

While I believe that Fat Billy wants to avoid this game with all his might, I also think he has set it up so that its a win win scenario for him.

If he goes out and pitches a gem and the Yanks win then its: "HURTING CLEMENS GUTS OUT THE WIN", "YANKEES STILL HAVE LIFE AFTER HEROIC OUTING BY CLEMENS" in the headlines.

If he gets bombed then: "GAME CLEMENS TRIES TO OVERCOME BUT YANKS FALTER", "SOX LUCK OUT AND BEAT HURT CLEMENS" and "HURTING BUT NOT BOWED".

Here's hoping that FB gets his clocked cleaned.

From Surving Grady's Denton - Tonight, ahhh tonight, we get Clemens versus Schilling. Perhaps the final time these two will face each other - unless there is an ALCS match-up in the works. A Red Sox win should erase the doubt in any morons (emphasis mine) who still think the division is up for grabs.

Rob said...

Men at the corners with 2 out (both walks) for Minnesota.

Rob said...

Michael Cuddyer walks to load the bases. Tying run up for MIN.

Dun dun dun.

Rob said...

Joel Zumaya to the rescue.

Rob said...

Full count with 2 outs and the bases loaded.

High drama in the dome.

Rob said...

Zumaya walks Brian Buschner, forcing a run in. 6-3

Jere said...

Walks in a run. 6-3

Rob said...

And now Joe Mauer is pinch-hitting.

Jere said...

we go 9! 6-3 Det.

Rob said...

BACKWARDS K for Joe Mauer, and finally, the inning is over.

The Twinkies get 1 run, and after 8 innings, it's 6-3 Detroit.

Devine said...

Ahhhhh....Detroit escapes. Zumaya blows Mauer away with 98 MPH heat on the outside corner. 6-3 Tigers headed to the 9th.

Rob said...

Well, it looks like you guys got this one pretty well covered. I've gotta go out and get some groceries and be back before the game. See you guys then.

GO DETROIT!

Jere said...

3 outs, Tigers.

Devine said...

Detroit's half over, still a 3-run lead. 3 outs to go.

allan said...

Noted homophobe Todd Jones in to nail it down.

allan said...

leadoff triple for the twins

Rob said...

Well, I lied. I guess a grocery trip is not in my future. Looks like you guys are stuck with me.

And the Tigers are stuck with a triple from Luis Rodriguez... Not a good way to start things.

Devine said...

Tigers score on a triple, then single. 6-4, tying run at plate.

Rob said...

Punto singles home Rodriguez.

Here comes Tyner, it's 6-4.

allan said...

Who is Jackie MacMullan talking to when she begins her column: "It's OK. You can come down off the ledge now. Josh Beckett has salvaged your sports weekend."?

Rob said...

Tyner lines out, 1 away.

Devine said...

Oooops, I meant Twins scored, obviously.

Granderson makes a nice catch running toward the infield. 1 down.

Jere said...

1 out away now

Rob said...

Backwards K for Kubel. 2 away.

Devine said...

Got him looking. That's two.

Rob said...

Torii Hunter stands between Todd Jones and a Tigers win.

andy said...

I am pumped for a fucking huge game tonight. And wow Ellsbury. Wow. simply wow. I am ordering an Ellsbury jersey. I have never wanted a jersey its not my style to wear game jerseys but I am making an exception here. Gotta get in on him early and ride him for 20 years.

Rob said...

Hunter gets an infield single to short. Punto to third. Men at the corners, 2 out.

Rob said...

And now it's up to Morneau.

Devine said...

Infield single. He tried to get the runner going to 3rd (no chance to get Hunter at 1st), but instead it's Morneau as the go-ahead run with 2 out at the plate.

Rob said...

3-0 to Morneau.

Jere said...

Inge, when you get that ball, you go right to the bag and tag the guy in case he slides past the bag!

(I've got it on mlb.tv now)

It was a grounder deep in hole at short, only play was to third, and Inge just caught the ball and didn't even look at the runner, who beat him to the bag.

Devine said...

Loaded. Up comes Cuddyer.

Rob said...

And Morneau walks!

Bases are loaded now. The tying run is at second, winning run on first.

Please no. Just... no.

Rob said...

Michael Cuddyer batting.

Rob said...

Two quick strikes on Cuddyer.

Jere said...

WIN

allan said...

WHEW!

Rob said...

In play, out(s)!!!!!!

Ballgame!

Jere said...

The incredible, surging Yanks are now just 2 up in the wild card.

Devine said...

Got them, force at 2nd.

We'll try to help you and ourselves later, Tigers.

s1c said...

Who is Jackie MacMullan talking to when she begins her column: "It's OK. You can come down off the ledge now. Josh Beckett has salvaged your sports weekend."?

The same people that Denton was talking about - I believe he called them MORONS.

She was definitely not talking about JOS nation.

Ballgame!"

Careful, it could've been a two-run double with the third run out at the plate, leading to extra innings. You never know with GD. I don't know if runs supersede outs. They should have one that says "in play, run(s) & out(s)." Actually, all of them should just be "I don't know yet, please hold."

allan said...

Gotta get in on him early and ride him for 20 years.

Hmmm, this also sounds like something Laura would say.

Rob said...

Heh, yeah. That was my first time watching a game on gameday. But I certainly can see that. Of course, then I reloaded and saw RS said, "WHEW!"

allan said...

I've wondered about that too.

We need to find someone who inputs that stuff and ask him/her.

Of course, I saw "in play, out.." and sent the WHEW before I saw the actual PBP.

Bot, on Friday:

"Mentally, I wasn’t completely there. I wasn’t 100 percent dead-on like I usually am. It took me a little while there to get my feet underneath me. It kind of started a domino effect. Are you locked in everyday at work? No. There’s going to be days where you go on, and you just kind of go through - not to say go through the motions - but you just go to work and it’s not like a normal day."

s1c said...

Saw the Bot comment yesterday. I couldn't believe he said that. Am more interested in him being locked in tonight.

andy said...

I am glad he said it. It was obvious to us looking in and this happens to starters and relievers all the time. I appreciate his honesty. I don't think any of our players should hold back on talking about what they are thinking. That being said Bot quit being a pussy its the yankees you don't get to take that day off. Its like the bank closing on the first or a toy store closing a week before christmas. Step up and do it. Then take off a Jays game.

s1c said...

Andy - your response was why I couldn't believe he said it.

allan said...

More Bot, who had to get up Saturday morning for a clinic with a bunch of young kids from Boston:

"It was tough getting up and getting out of bed. But I promised those kids. It's kind of funny. They were all in bed by the time I pitched, so they started asking me all sorts of questions. They were saying, 'Hey, I saw we lost the game. What happened?' So I had to tell 'em, 'While you were all sleeping nice and tight in your beds, I went out and lost the game for us.'"

Rob said...

In Chicago, the Angels and White Sox were in a 7-7 tie going into the bottom of the 9th inning, and Jim Thome hit his 500th home run, a two-run shot to win it for the White Sox.

I wonder if that's ever happened before, #500 being a walk-off.

andy said...

that was awesome that he told the kids that. His emotional state seems rattled. He has never had to deal with being touched up like that before. I think his comments are an insight into the pain he feels. He doesnt really mean that he doesn't show up to play every night.

s1c said...

Odds are pretty long for that but I'm sure there is a way to find out at baseball-reference.com

allan said...

I'd say it shows he wasn't rattled. He blew the game, he knows it and he can talk about it.

Sounds like he's moved past it quite easily. (Having a decent division lead and winning yesterday certainly helped.)

Rob said...

Well, it gave the Hawk something to talk about...

andy said...

yeah but he was all negative and making excuses. If he meant what he said I don't like his outlook although i like his honesty.

allan said...

I'll bet Bot's feelings are not all that unique, but most players would never admit feeling that way to the media.

ARGH! This is totally off topic, but I just had to vent. Can anyone explain to me how TWC can still be billing me for the EI we paid for in full in April? Morons. Every month Dave has to get on the phone for half an hour and explain that yes, we do have the service, and yes, we had initially chosen to have it billed in installments, but that they screwed up and billed it all in one chuck, which we just sucked up and paid. Besides which, we would be several months PAST the monthly installments by now even if we HAD gotten them.

I hate them so very much.

Sarah Haendler said...

Given the obvious missing links, I kind of dig that lineup.

andy said...

If Lyndon Baines Johnson continues this incredible hitting and RBI streak can the Sox not have him in the playoffs? I saw on Sosh that a preferable lineup for the playoffs did not include him. Fine not as a starter but his speed is crucial to the late inning run factory. I think we would get better production from him then from Drew in most games. Manny Crisp Johnson in the OF? Manny in Right to save him the trouble of having to try most of the time. Maybe he plays left only in Fenway. But did you see that leap into the monster that The New Deal did? He is my new favorite player. Can you tell?

Living on the borderline of the yankee / red sox fan split in CT my daughter had a great time in class wearing her B. Story also goes that in her science class one of the Sox fans kept on singing - DAMON under his breath during class annoying the yankee fans who asked the teacher to make him stop. The teacher just smiled, reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a Sox cap and clapped it on his head.

RS- the way that LBJ is playing and seeing how this is the second year in a row that MBM has missed significant time in the stretch run do you think the option gets picked up?

I think MBM's option years are for 2009 and 2010.

I could see them trying to trade him over this winter, thinking/knowing that he has begun his decline. If he stays and does a bit worse in 2008, I think they will let him go.

Normally, he might be able to stick around as a DH, but we have Flo for that.

Without Flo, he would be the DH, but I think he definetely gets traded this year and I would not be surprised to see them willing to take 50% value in return.

I luv Manny -- and I would do that deal right now. (But TB is not as stupid as Steve Phillips.)

You know me, have not been as big a fan of MBM as you have, but I don't think I have bashed him either.

As for going away party, after J.D. has swept the post season awards by being the ALCS and WS MVP's. Theo will pull the trigger and trade him I think. Gabbard for Manny???

Gabbard for Manny???

Can't decide which response to post:

(a) Bah.

or

(b) Stop baiting me!

Gotta get in on him early and ride him for 20 years.

Hmmm, this also sounds like something Laura would say.

!!!!!

Except for the 20 years part. In 20 years, he'll be as old as you. :)

s1c said...

No baiting intended, just killing time while waiting for the teeth grinding joe morgan to start talking about how manny doesn't play the outfield well.

Yes I know mbm isn't playing but this is joe morgan we are talking about and I figure it'll be the third inning before he realizes that Ellsbury is playing.

A wild one in Oakland - Nick Swisher rushed the mound and tackled Texas starter Vicente Padilla after getting hit by a pitch for the second straight day, starting a benches-clearing brawl between the Athletics and Rangers on Sunday.

made me laugh quite heartily there L-Woman. I wish we had a pitcher like Gabbard but he is not worth a manny. Maybe we get David Wells for Manny.

andy said...

Oh and Laura you need to be online for this game. Quit making Papelbot like excuses. Just show up and play. It's the Mother Humping Yankees for Christ's sake.

allan said...

In 20 years, he'll be as old as you. :)

And you'll have long since moved on from Ellsbury to some infielder who is like 14 right now.

I am real amped up over this game I yelled at my 2 yr old for acting up and spreading her negative energy to the sox.

the teeth grinding joe morgan to start talking

mute would be the default setting tonight, but i do want to hear the anti-fbfo chants. hmmmm....

im prettey fucking psyched for this game.
TO SAY THE LEAST

andy said...

Do we have the ability to do a voice chat during the game? How awesome would that be?

allan said...

I loaded up my workbag and got everything ready to take home, since this game could actually go past the end of my shift (1 AM but I usually leave around midnight).

Zenslinger said...

As for someone who inputs for Gameday, the Replacement Level guy does it. One of his first games was the 30-3 thing (I think he's in Baltimore?)

allan said...

I would love the crowd to rag on Billy's ass, have him give up 4-5 runs and then have him suffer some sort of I-thought-it-was-the-ball meltdown.

allan said...

Right, I was thinking about him.

allan said...

Billy is not actually on the mound yet, but doesn't this mean Jere owes someone $1,000,000?

allan said...

Just saw the Pedro/Zimmer throwdown on an MLBTV promo.

That will never get old.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm not sure I could handle a voice chat during the game. Too many stimuli!

In other news, Dave is still fighting to talk to a supervisor at TWC. If it weren't so annoying, it would be comical.

Oh, who am I kidding? It's damn funny.

s1c said...

I think jere owes the money to JOS nation, I leave it up to you and L-girl to mail the checks.

s1c said...

200th career start at Fenway for FB?

jon miller: "... bitter rivals down through the centuries"

Sarah Haendler said...

yep - those centuries. They've been hard.

allan said...

I still get annoyed at what happened in that 1638 ALCS.

nixon33 said...

hahahaha

allan said...

cheesy hip hop outro -- who comes up with this shit?

Sarah Haendler said...

Yeah, but we sure made them eat it in 1607. That first north american world series was one for the record books.

s1c said...

well technically it has been centuries, the 20th and 21st.

I actually like Jon, he is enthusiastic, and sans Morgan is a good play by play guy. Its just when he is with Morgan that he gets a little over the top.

Could be worse, we could have to listen to Berman and Sutcliff!

allan said...

one for the record books

Once Gutenberg got his press going.

allan said...

miller also dumbs himself waaaaaay down to give morgan openings to "talk".
