Manny Ramirez Speaks The Truth

Charles P. Pierce, Slate:
Boston did not play an inning of baseball in which the team was not cool, and loose, and utterly in command of the circumstances. ...

This was a team that realized that losing wasn't the end of the world, and therefore, losing was nothing of which to be afraid. Manny saw that first and brought the rest of them along.

  1. I think my favorite band says it best:

i jumped in the river and what did I see?
    black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
    all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

  2. ok if we're gonna play song quotes I think this totally tops yours, dude:

Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I cant help but ask myself how much I'll let the fear take the wheel and steer
It's driven me before, it seems to have a vague
    Haunting mass appeal
Lately I'm beginning to find that I should be the one behind the wheel
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there
So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive, oh oh
It's driven me before, it seems to be the way
    That everyone else get around
Lately, I'm beginning to find that when I drive myself, my light is found
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there
Would you choose water over wine
    Hold the wheel and drive
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there

  3. Or this:

Hitched a ride to the peaceful side of town
Then proceeded where thieves were no longer found
    I can’t crash now
    I’ve been waiting for this
    I won’t crash now
    I found some encouragement

    Precious declaration reads
Yours is yours and mine you leave alone now
    Precious declaration says
I believe all hope is dead no longer

New meanings to the words I feed upon
Wake within my veins elements of freedom
    I won't break now
    I’ve been living for this
    I can’t break now
    I’m cleansed with hopefulness

    Precious declaration reads
Yours is yours and mine you leave alone now
    Precious declaration says
I believe all hope is dead no longer

Once I jumped thru hoops of fire
As high and far as you required
I was blind but now I see
    Salvation has discovered me

  4. I just read Pierce's piece and it is GREAT!! This article is the centerpiece of our whole post season.

And on a personal note, where is a devil to whom I can sell my soul, so I can write like that, too??

  5. Charlie Pierce is one of the two Boston-based sports commentators that I actually go out of my way to read (Jackie MacMullan is the other), and he's right on target with this one.

He has a short conversation every Bill Littlefield on the show Only a Game (podcasted at www.onlyagame.org) somewhere around the 30 or 35 minute mark each week. Enjoy.
