WS 1: Red Sox 13, Rockies 1

Rockies - 010 000 000 - 1 6 0
Red Sox - 310 270 00x - 13 17 0
Josh Beckett was the shit once again (7-6-1-1-9, 93). Dustin Pedroia hit a home run to start the first inning -- the first rookie in World Series history to do so -- and J.D. Drew added a two-run double to give Boston a quick 3-0 lead.

Beckett relied almost exclusively on his fastball for the first four innings -- 39 of his first 40 pitches were heat ranging from 95 to 97. He had excellent control. He set up Todd Helton with a 12/6 curve for strike two in the second inning before getting him swinging at a fastball and his 0-2 off-speed pitch to Matt Holliday in the fourth was tapped to third.

Nine consecutive Red Sox batters reached base with two outs in the fifth -- three doubles, two singles and four walks, including three straight bases-loaded walks -- that pushed the lead from 6-1 to 13-1.

So ... Boston's last four games: 7-1, 12-2, 11-2, 13-1. Four wins by a combined score of 43-6!

And:
First team in postseason history to score 10+ runs in three straight games

13 Runs = New World Series Game 1 record

12 Runs = Largest margin of victory in World Series Game 1 (11: White Sox 1959 and Atlanta 1996)

Tied World Series record with nine extra-base hits (Pirates 1935)

  1. Congrats, redsock (Allan?) ... can't think of anyone more deserving. That's exciting!

    Go Sox tonight!

  2. Thanks. Very cool timing, too.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Sweet! May the hits flow in, both to this site and in the game tonight.

Spinach is gonna be steamin at the fens tonight boy!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Whoops, didn't see this til after I posted on your Blogtoberfest post (which seemed appropriate). Anyway, congratulations again. As I said above, well deserved!

  5. Not only do we have steamed spinach and whiskey, but according to BP,

"the Red Sox are perhaps the strongest Secret Sauce team since divisional play began, excelling in each of that metric's three categories: defense (FRAA), closer effectiveness (WXRL), and power pitching (EqK9)".

    SECRET SAUCE!

    Unstoppable!

    ReplyDelete
  6. secret sauce= J.D. Power and Associates!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Looks like I'll be pickin up a mickey of JD before game time ;-)

Off to do homework until later!

    ReplyDelete
  8. secret sauce= J.D. Power and Associates!

    LMAO. Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Definitely picking up a nipper of JD (and some more High Lifes ...) before this game. See y'all later, unless I get waylaid by Sox fans who bump into my one-man pregame at the hotel bar (which isn't likely) ...

    SAWWWWWWXXXX!!!

  10. Parlay the Parrot has been returned.

Thank God ... that video is priceless and makes me miss Bob Lobel ... I'm glad that he ultimately gave them the benefit of the doubt, as I can picture their story (however questionable it may be) happening to me in college, and the important thing is that Jeemer et al have their mascot back.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Is that right? Lugo's in the 8-hole and Ellsbury's batting 9th? Why?

    ReplyDelete
  12. put the rookie in the least pressure spot? create a second leadoff guy for the white-hot yook, tiz amd mbm?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I noticed the steamed spinach and the Jack, but where's the Millar mojo? He's got some sort of crazy shit workin' for us in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Less than three hours to go and I am buzzin'.

Going to be in the Bar tonight again, so I'll be sending my comments via Psychic Wireless (hope you can read them).

If you look at the Colorado lineup, it's at least somewhat dangerous from top to bottom. Very solid. Then again, Beckett is more than solid. And then again again...I like our lineup as well. And I don't think Francis can really be ready for what he's going to face there. Shades of Maximus and "Unleash hell" come to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sorry to act in dissent but I gotta say the Rockies are going to take this.

Yeah, I lived in Worcester and I'm STILL rooting Rockies.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Who the frag is Charlie Pierce and why is he doing a break down with Bob Ryan?

Has anybody seen the Inside Edge Scouting Reports?

It is time for "the Dominator" to step up and do some Commandeer Kick Ass type of things tonight!!

LBJ in the ninth? I like it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Charles Pierce is a great Boston-area writer. He wrote that terrific piece on Manny that Allan linked to a few posts back. He can run rings around the whole lot of those mediots.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ah, I see, he writes for the globes sunday magazine. That is why I don't know who he is, I almost never read the globe (just the sports section).

He's actually pretty good on 10.0 and it is obvious, he is a MBM fan!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. hour and 1/2.

    GO SOX!!!!!!!

We get to watch it at 5PM here in CA. That's way better but I would rather be up late with my family in RI.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Good gawd. Tom Caron is comparing the Sox pitchers of Beckett, Schilling, Daisuke and the Bot to Grantland Rice's four horsemen.

Geeze Tom, why don't you just compare them to the ones in revelations.

"the leading horse is white, the second horse is red..."

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dumb question. As a lefty with normal splits, they think JD will behave per usual.

I'm just not that hot on tek right now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am getting butterflies earlier and worse than for Game 7. It was rather chilling in Stark's "Why the Rockies Will Win" on ESPN to read that the Sox must win Game 1 to win the series. I know it's not true per se, but it makes sense. I am getting a little spooked by all this talk of how difficult Coors Field will be for us. It must be overblown.

    Isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's got to be overblown, to create drama.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I like Stark, but I tend to believe Diamond Mind a bit more.

Fear not. Red Sox in 5.

    ReplyDelete
  25. One hour to pre-game --

    Where is everybody?

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's got to be overblown, to create drama

Just like the Rox winning 2 of 3 in june has been over rated. Why not pull out the fact that the Rockies are 5-4 vs the Sox in their entire history?

The only problem facing the Sox in Colorado is MBM in left and one of the youk, lowell and ortiz having to sit since no DH.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's true, but otoh, it's not like Papi's been carrying our offense.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good evening. I am ready to go! Excited, but not nervous. Harvey saw someone today with six tickets to each game at Fenway. Why didn't he offer to BUY two for us?? Oh, well, I will tell myself it is better to watch at home and blog than to be at Fenway. Not that I will believe what I say.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Papi's been carrying our offense.

Oh, I agree, but one of the better bats has to sit in Colorado. Unless, Yerry wants to be creative like the WEEI callers want him to be.

Scenario 1 - Move Youkilis to RF (a lot of people wanted this).
Scenario 2 - Move Youkilis to 2nd and Pedroia to SS (almost as many wanted this)
Scenario 3 - Youk to Third, Lowell to 2b and Pedroia to SS (Yerry laughed at this one during his WEEI interview today).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Has Westcoastsox posted? I wonder how is he doing out there in CA. Was he the only CA member of Joy Nation?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Here is a stat for Amy!

Tek - is hitting .158 in his first plate appearance. .281 afterward!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Any concerns with the weather tonight? It looks like there is a lot of rain moving in.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i hope for a big game from JD Power & Associates!

  34. Any concerns with the weather tonight? It looks like there is a lot of rain moving in.

Could get interesting after the 6th inning.

  36. Picked up a nice little bottle of this stuff for pregame shot.

Got a nice bottle of wine for in-game, and goin' to cook my meal right now.

Will check in once the game starts and I eat!

Funny thing at the liquor store, I was buying a bottle of champagne to replenish the one I drank after game 5, wearing my Red Sox jersey - the clerk was like "aren't you a little bit early? the series is just startin tonight!" what ensued was a nice discussion about how he wants the red sox to take it, but hopes Jeff Francis does well tonight since he used to play with Francis before he made it big...Imagine that, teammates - a few years later, one is pitching game 1 of the world series, the other is working the register at a liquor store so schmucks like me can get our fill!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks, S1C--he has been carrying a pretty hot bat lately...for Tek, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am amazingly calm tonight. I feel really good about the whole WS - optimistic, happy and calm.

Let's see how long that lasts!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am calm also (which is even more amazing than Laura being calm!). It's Game One, they are in Fenway, it's the World Series. It's ALL good.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am amazingly calm tonight. I feel really good about the whole WS - optimistic, happy and calm.

Why L-girl, I have always found you to be calm, cool, collected and otherwise unemotional about these games!!! Well, except when LBJ comes up to bat.

  41. Great post by Jethro Q. Walrustitty in the SoSH Game Thread:

"Days like today are why 2004 was so important. I no longer worry about dying without having seen the Sox win it all at least once. I've seen it, I bought the DVD and it'll live forever. Here they are in another World Series, and I'm going to enjoy watching it a lot more than I did in 2004. If the Rockies keep rolling and win, I'll be disappointed but not devastated. For the next week, I'm just going to enjoy watching my favorite team play another really good team for the championship of Major League Baseball. I'll cheer every clutch hit, defensive gem and 1-2-3 inning the Sox achieve. But I won't feel a single pang of fear every time someone makes an error, or the bullpen puts the tying run on first base with a four pitch walk.

"The Red Sox won it all in 2004, and no matter what happens over the next seven games the 2007 Red Sox have had a great season full of terrific moments. The collective psyche of the nation no longer requires that they win.

"It would just be really, really great if they do."

    ***

    I wholeheartedly agree.

    Now win.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The stress will begin if Beckett loses. Which he wont. Therefore, the stress will not begin.

    Happy thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Evening/Morning all; I feel amazingly crappy after sleeping since 7pm but I'm sure it'll be worth it later.

    Sox in 6 for me.

Got my Beckett shirt all ready; it took like a month to get it delivered through customs so I'd better wear it at key times.

Hope your all looking forward to the ride ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am much more nervous than 2004, at least at the moment, because there was so little doubt in my mind. Although I probably have been listening to the other side a bit too much.

Anyway, send me some of your calm, Laura. I need it.

Amy, there are several of us in California, but I'm in San Francisco, along with sanfranciscoredsoxfan (though I'm betting you could figure that one out.) I don't know of anyone who's down there in San Diego and L.A. counties and is directly affected by the fires, but I'm thinking about those folks for sure.

I'm off to the Bar. Enjoy, and go Sox!

    ReplyDelete
  45. so tina interviews lugo, does that follow the pattern of people having big games? will it be lugo tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Zen, I didn't realize you were from the Bay area. It's wonderful there.

I think Westcoastsox is from SoCal, and we haven't heard from him, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Eck - Sox in 5
    Remdawg - Sox in 7

63 times the team which won game 1, won the world series. (49 times the other team won!)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Amy, everyone. I'm in the Bay Area, too - I used to live in LA, though. Big fires suck.

Zen, if you're still looking, where do you go to watch Sox games? Would love to join some real Sox fans for the WS!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well I see that danndann has checked in, where is the lord?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I HATE ERIC BYRNES.
    I WANT HIM TO DIE!
    FUCK YOU AND FUCK FOX!

slouching over the table .. comb yer fucking hair ya dooche.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Byrnes is commentating!? That little shit ...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Eric - you are going to be surprised how much the Rockies suck vs. a real team.

    ReplyDelete
  53. alright -- wearing my 2004 champs t-shirt which i broke out for alcs game 5 -- and game 6 -- and game 7 -- so here we go.

    the shots are poured!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Glad you are ok, Westcoastsox!

    ReplyDelete
  55. The JD shots are poured in frosty glasses. We are ready to go!

    ReplyDelete
  56. does anyone know if there is a place to listen to the weei feed of the game?
i live in boston and i can't bloody well get the station in((

    ReplyDelete
  57. Wow I've never minded Eric Byrnes until now...what an annoying person; well done fox now I know why I pay for MLB.tv...to listen to Tim McCarver AND Eric Byrnes!

    ReplyDelete
  58. hey eric byrnes, youre an idiot. and not the good kind of idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  59. thatdietcokegirl, I don't know of a direct feed from their site, but I believe that you can buy a cheap MLB Radio/TV package that would let you get WEEI on it ... not that that's exactly what you were hoping for, I realize ...

    ReplyDelete
  60. tdcg, if you sign up for the mlb package, you get audio for both teams. i think you go here.

does weei have a live feed?

    ReplyDelete
  61. doesnt matter who ya pick eric -- boston fans think you are a total shithead.

    ReplyDelete
  62. byrnes says "i'd like to pick the rockies, but i want to go out and have a beer after the game."

byrnes, like anyone's going to like you if you pick boston to win??? you will be hated no matter what you do or say tonight, you idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  63. wish fox could be bothered to show the ENTIRE team introductions.

ya know for the FANS of the teams.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Random Q: Does anyone know if there was a flyover tonight? Was there one for Game 7?

    ReplyDelete
  65. oh god, glad i am at work and missing that commentary now.

i'm leaving work now, and get to listen to Joe Castiglione on the XM feed in my car. Tempted to sit in my driveway and listen to entire game that way. Next year I get a portable XM receiver. That's what I want for Hanukkah this year!

I'll be back on line at some point during the game with my laptop...

    ReplyDelete
  66. supposed to be a flyover at some point yes.

    ReplyDelete
  67. i sure hope there's no flyover, but there often is.

    ReplyDelete
  68. TDCG - go to MLB.com and you can get the WRKO radio feed. WEEI carries the games but on the internet it is blacked out.

Not sure about the WRKO site.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Fly over has or will happen. It is the ws. nuff said.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ortiz always looks funny to me in a regular cap instead of a batting helmet.

    ReplyDelete
  71. i'm more bothered by tek hitting ahead of drew than i am about lugo ahead of lyndon.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I just said the same thing! Hearing those high-pitched squeals too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. John Williams conducting the Lowell High ROTC band ... Overkill? I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Westcoastsox, you can listen to XM online without a radio (though you may not be able to do that while also on another website. I haven't tried.)

    ReplyDelete
  75. ok, i managed to get that jack daniels down (better cold), now i'm ready for a win!

    ReplyDelete
  76. is this the cat that did star wars?

    ReplyDelete
  77. i don't know, we mute the anthem! oh shit, here come the planes.

cut the military crap, let's play baseball!

    ReplyDelete
  78. go to MLB.com and you can get the WRKO radio feed. WEEI carries the games but on the internet it is blacked out.

FYI, I believe that both stations are "Red Sox Radio Network" affiliates, aka Joey C et al. doing the commentary. So WRKO broadcast == WEEI. I think?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yes, Nixon, plus lots of other movies. ET. Harry Potter. etc.

    ReplyDelete
  80. wonder if he was smoking any of those funny jazz cigarettes when he "arranged" that new version...

    ReplyDelete
  81. No baseball on XM Online. Has to do with broadcast rights or something.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yes, EEI and RKO are the same broadcast. We switch back and forth driving around Boston depending on which one is coming in more clearly.

    ReplyDelete
  83. thx guys, i'm trying the feed from weei.com now. i just thought it was usually blacked out. wrko has some dipshit show on it right now called 'savage nation' (at least on the real radio) stupid guy didn't know what paganism was (die, bitch) so i don't know what it's like on the online feed. if not i'll go mlb because...i have to listen to the radio. kinda just. have to ;)

they just did a fly over. it was so loud! woo! ;D!!

    LET'S GO SOXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. L-girl said...
i don't know, we mute the anthem! oh shit, here come the planes.

    REFUSENIKS!
    i dig it...

    ReplyDelete
  85. He's a bit heavy on the melodrama, Nixon, with or without the "cigar."

    ReplyDelete
  86. tim mcc agrees w/ eric byrnes. that confirms it, both wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Actually WRKO and WEEI are both owned by the same people. WEEI carries the sox games, but WRKO is who the contract is with the sox. That is why the weei page is blacked out for the Sox games.

If you look at the MLB.com radio page you will find the WRKO listed as the station. As Ish can tell you this year though they have been calling it the Big Y Red Sox radio Network.

    ReplyDelete
  88. red sox refuse to play "o canada" for francis -- gettin' in his head!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. is this the cat that did star wars?

It is the very same ... Star Wars, a slew of other movies, the American theme to the Olympics, and just about every other well-known modern epic. He borrows heavily from "classic" classical composers, and a lot of "real musicians" think he's sort of a populist hack, but I must confess to liking a lot of his movie-score marches.

Also, a correction on myself: that was the real BSO he was conducting, the high school folks were just the standard bearers.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oh, yeah, you're right, David. I forgot that. Just the music stations. Oh, well.

    ReplyDelete
  91. the anthem was pretty good tho.

i know, i know. i hate all that crap too. but....john williams. he knows how to compose ;)

    ReplyDelete
  92. savage = limbaugh, hannity, fox news, shit ...

    stay away!!! stay far away!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  93. So I guess I am also wrong on the EEI/RKO question also. I am batting .333 so far (I think I am right about John Williams scoring ET, Star Wars, etc.) In baseball that would be a great batting average. Not so much in the real world.

    ReplyDelete
  94. the anthem always sucks, but there are good versions and worse versions, for sure.

i just never hear them unless i'm there live. mute.

    ReplyDelete
  95. They are calling it the Big Y Radio Network in BOSTON? Or only out here where there are Big Y stores? I really have to pay more attention to advertising, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  96. LETS DO THIS!

Gonna eat this stuff then i'll be back!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Helton all business with the lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  98. amy, small sample size. i'm sure you bat at least .750 IRL.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Thanks for your confidence, Laura. I'd be happy with anything over .500 these days!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Michael Savage kicks ass. Also love the National Anthem and the sound of the fighter jets as they scream across Tampa Bay from MacDill AFB right over my house. I know I'm in the minority here, but anything for the Red Sox so it's all good.

    ReplyDelete
  101. yeah, fighter jets have a lot to do with the red sox. not.

war is not entertainment. sorry to be heavy, that will be all.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Tim, I couldn't get your photo to open. Hope it tastes better than it looked on my computer ---a little box with a red X in it.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Sportsnet carrying O'Brian/Sutcliffe feed. You can always zap Buffy between innings.

    ReplyDelete
  104. ive got good luck chicken tacos going. ate them watching game 7.

are they gonna show yaz throw the first pitch or what??!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Woti, we're watching the Fox station from Buffalo. Cuts out one set of "analysts" (ahem).

    ReplyDelete
  106. are they gonna show yaz throw the first pitch or what??!!

    maybe in the 4th.

    (no politics, pls.)

    ReplyDelete
  107. They seem to show the first pitch on tape at some point, not live. Unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  108. It's not about entertainment for me. A lot more to it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. K! Great start. He looks DOMINANT.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Crap, the atmospherics must be crazy tonight. I can't even get WTIC on my head set, being over powered by the Local Spanish station.

    Dominator looking good there!!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. We must stop doing that. Getting scary!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Nice.

    Good start Josh!

    ReplyDelete
  113. See? "I agree with Eric Byrnes." This means the long layoff will affect the Rockies badly. :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. 106!! :)

Maybe we should be like the Sox and take it one game at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Oh sweet Jebus. Striking out the side in the first is incredibly awesome / nerve-wracking.

I was very inspired / buoyed by the piece(s) about being confident, etc, because of 2004, but I'm not quite there yet, myself. Still worried.

    That was freaking awesome, though.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Fuck yeah!

Time to finish this tasty meal!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I believe Beckett struck out the side without throwing a single breaking ball. True?

    ReplyDelete
  118. 15 pitches -- 15 fastballs -- 3 strtikeouts

    beckett being beckett.

    now we get some runs

    ReplyDelete
  119. And sit your ass down because I am the dominator and I am comander kick ass.

    3 K's

    ReplyDelete
  120. Smokin.

    WOW what a start!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Whoa, struck out the side. And the crowd loves it!

    10 straight FB

    FB? Foul balls??

    ReplyDelete
  122. Beckett at a 29:1 K/BB rate. Unreal

    ReplyDelete
  123. Dear Dustin,

It is the World Series, it is your time baby. Some Fuck Yeah antics are necessary to get this game off right.

    Thanx,
    RSN
    Joy Nation

    ReplyDelete
  124. Here's the first pitch, Nixon.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Oh good, the letters are back!

s1c, are you taking margarita deliveries tonight? oh maybe not, it's a worknight for most folks.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I watched FOX up till now, but Byrnes killed me. Discovered Obie by accident, just a question of putting up with Sutcliffe (who sounds pissed already).

    Beckett easing my suffering somewhat.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Dear RSN and Joy Nation,

    Good enough?

    D-Ped

    ReplyDelete
  128. Is there anything better than a leadoff dong??? I LOVE IT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Oh yeah!

    Go Dustin GO.

    ReplyDelete
  130. How the hell does that little guy DO that? Amazing. Fuck yeah for sure.

    ReplyDelete
