BP's Internet Baseball Awards
Baseball Prosepctus has published the results of its 2007 awards. Much more info at the link.
Outraged that Beckett did not win the Cy Young. Especially after Sabathia melted down in the ALCS (but I know the votes were taken before the post season). But delighted that PedROYa won!
ReplyDeleteI take it these are not the REAL awards?
ReplyDeleteYes, not the BBWAA voting.
ReplyDeleteWedge mgr of the year? Obviously the criteria didnt include finishing off playoff series :P
ReplyDeleteSay what you want about A-Rod, but I think every person that voted for these awards that did not have him first in the AL MVP vote needs to explain themselves in writing. There is no way A-Rod doesn't deserve any AL MVP award, be it the BBWAA or any random baseball blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with this year's results. Wedge, for the regular season, does deserve Manager of the Year.
how the heck does Sabathia beat out Beckett for the Cy Young???
ReplyDeleteThese aren't the "real" awards, but they are often more based in reality than the real ones.
ReplyDeleteI know, but you don't really need to compute too many "stats" to figure that Beckett ought to win the in the official voting...didn't he finish with more wins?
ReplyDeleteand a WS ring! guess I'm biased =)
psht they have cc over beckett? that's pretty ridiculous ;p
ReplyDeleteThese are the votes of BP readers -- who are usually way more intelligent that the the writers who bestow the "official" awards.
ReplyDeleteThis was done at the end of the regular season -- like the other awards -- so playoff performance does not matter.
Wins are one of the worst ways to evaluate a pitcher. Even so, Beckett had 20 and CC, Carmona, Lackey and Wang all had 19. Even if you give more than a glance at wins -- which you should not -- it's a wash.
Based solely on ERA+, Lackey and Carmona win.
just seems like Sabathia finished with a significantly higher point total than the others...do the BP readers not give more weight to ERA?
ReplyDeleteforgive me as I'm not familiar with these awards...
I agree - I expected the finish to be closer.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, I expect fully that Sabathia is this year's Cy Young. He pitched a lot more 7 inning games that Beckett, more quality starts, and a lot more innings in total. He had a better ERA, and what, one less win? Wakefield got 17 wins, does that make him more worthy of the Cy Young than Santana?
ReplyDeleteAnd of course his point total is going to be higher if he pitched 40 more innings than Beckett.
I love Beckett, and would much rather have him on the team than Sabathia (cuz Josh is a post season animal, and isn't afraid to drop the F bomb), but I am frusterated that Red Sox Nation seems so biased.
It would not surprise me to Beckett not get the CY. You can make a strong case for any of the top 4-5 picks.
ReplyDeleteBut the writers get the picks so wrong so often, the MVP and CY awards are pretty much meaningless. Same for the GG.
Sabathia had a string this season of 10 straight games not giving up more than two runs....yet got ONE win out of it. If he had Boston's bats, he would have won at least six of those games and finished with 24 or 25 wins. The awards are based on regular season, not playoffs which, of course, Beckett excelled. If you based the awards on post-season, A-Rod would never win MVP.

ReplyDeleteActually, he won 4 games in that 10-game stretch (July 24 to September 8), not 1.
On the other side, here are two Beckett starts:
July 15, Tor: 8-7-2-2-8
July 25, Cle: 8-4-1-0-7
Both losses. Plus a ND against the Angels on August 17 (7-5-2-1-8, 1 unearned run).
didn't he finish with more wins?
ReplyDeleteYou should hang around Joy of Sox more. It will help disabuse of silly notions like judging a pitcher by his W/L record. Just think about how little that has to do with a pitcher's performance.
and a WS ring!
Obviously that can't be figured in either.
I wish Daisuke will be rookie of the year.
