Manny Speaks

The Globe has his arrival and chat:
We've got a great team. ... I want to finish my career here, but it's up to them. ... I'm just going to come, try to be Manny, and do my thing. ... I'm blessed, man. ... I'm going to come and play and let them make the decision. ... I'm happy, yeah. ... I think you start growing up, and mature also. Now I'm here and I want to stay here. ... I'm going to go until the wheels fall off. ... Whatever happens, happens.

  1. I'm unfamiliar with Rock Unsteady Crew. Are they a good band?

  2. Manny: "I might be late two years in a row, but I'm always on time."

  3. Plus:

In his third bullpen session of the spring, Josh Beckett threw 73 pitches.

    Ortiz: "I feel like I'm 25 now."

  4. Did anyone see that interview with Manny where somebody asks him if he's gonna report to ST on time, and he's like, "What, do I have the balls? They don't gotta wait for me." It was hilarious. I love his calm demeanor. He's a magic man. I believe in his powers. I believe he "tricks" pitchers into thinking he can't hit a certain pitch by missing it on purpose, and then hits a dong on that pitch later in the game. I believe he purposely acted casual in the ALCS last year to make Cleveland think we'd given up, so that we could surprise them with a comeback. Manny is my God. God's a bad man.

  5. So what are the odds? Is Manny in a decline, like any other normal, unjuiced 36 year old slugger, and 2007 was essentially what we can expect? Or was it just an off year, and we'll see his OPS back over 1.000? I'd say 50-50, but if he's the Manny of old, 2008 will have a lot easier road to the Series than 2007.

  6. Something in between would be fine with me.

  7. He is certainly declining, but he should bounce back a bit this year. I don't think the days of him slugging under .500 are here to stay.

I'm curious to see if he takes third strikes like he seemed to do more of last year, especially early.

  8. Those quotes just made me laugh out loud. Gotta love Manny being Manny. I am glad he is happy because I am happy that he wants to stay. Sure, he may slow down a bit, but I think he will be at least as strong this season and probably stronger. After all, he says he has matured. Imagine that!

The difference with Manny is ,he is a hitter who hits home runs. Manny is also not normal, he's a Hall of Famer....

    I'd be suprised if he doesn't slug over 500 and doesn't hit 30 Hr's..
Contract year: he's well aware of that.........and what is the status of Tito's contract anyone know.?

  13. phren, I'm not sure if you're sarcastic or not, but his shirt says 'Rock Unsteady "LRG"'

LRG is an underground up-and-coming clothing line. I worked at a shop that started carrying it about 7 years ago, its popular among hip-hop and reggae aficionados.

back to Manny, good to see him on time. He kept repeating he wants to stay here.. I hope he's not trying to convince himself instead of us. I'd love for him to stay as long as he wants.

  14. And when did become cool for men to wear capri pants?

  15. Hall of Famer he is indeed, but the record book shows that even most Hall of Famers are heading south after their 35th B-day. Saying the odds on Manny are 50-50 is a great compliment, and maybe just a tad optimistic. You may recall that the last left fielder the Sox had whom we assumed was Hall of Fame-bound crashed and burned at 36...and he's still waiting for that call.

  16. Amy, we totally connected there! I didn't see your comment when I posted my "revamped" light switch (children readying for the second coming of jesus)....then both got approved there and....awesome!

  17. And when did become cool for men to wear capri pants?

    When Manny started wearing them.

    Manny = Cool.

  18. After seeing that image, redsock's picture just looks so phallic to me. Now I think you're perverted, but I know it's just me.

  19. My mind really is in the gutter 24/7...and I always thought that about redsock's image...lol, look at that girth!

    ...wow, i've outdone even myself.

  20. dietcokegirl's avatar is suggestive ... mine's a freaking light switch. come on!

i may have to change it now, it seems too distracting! i'd go back to oscar, but i don't have much to be grouchy about these years.

  21. heh...well, i've updated my pic as a result of all this...so at least someone came out on top.

oh, and jays tickets already went on sale??? dammit, looks like im going to have to grab a pair from a scalpereeno for opening day. NOT sitting in the 500s, no thank you never again.

    LOVE IT

And when did become cool for men to wear capri pants?

    When Manny put them on.

  23. Oops, I see Allan got to that one first.

dietcokegirl's avatar is suggestive ... mine's a freaking light switch. come on!

Dietcoke's is more than suggestive. It is... it.

Please don't change your light switch because some people can only think of penises.

What's up with these guys who think about penises so much. :>)

  24. back to Manny, good to see him on time.

Yes, that is very important. Punctuality helps win ball games!

  25. oh, and jays tickets already went on sale???

We can't go to any games in Toronto this year, they're all on weekends when we're working. We totally lucked out last year, with all the games on weekdays.

We're going to a few games in Detroit instead. We've been to Tiger Stadium but not Comerica.

Hey Tim, wmtc3 is June 7. Be there!

  26. "oh, and jays tickets already went on sale???"

Aw, Tim! You missed it, man. The Jays had a special sale just for Sox fans. Just sign up for the redsox.com email list. That's where I found out about this. You gotta keep track of my blog for all your weird and unusual Red Sox ticketing needs...

  27. June 7 you say? I'm there.

That definitely sucks about all the Toronto games and you guys not being able to go. I'm sure you can try to squeeze in at least one or two??? Even the Friday nighters???

I'm disappointed because theres no more "toonie tuesday" games....Weekday would have been better this year though, since i'll be in school anyway...easier to get to earlier as opposed to working til 5 then driving from Guelph.

I was actually thinking about making a road trip down to Detroit for a game or two - looks like a beautiful park, and the fans there probably won't be completely baseball illiterate like oh so many in T.O.

What's up with these guys who think about penises so much. :>)

lol...like i said, my mind is in the gutter 24/7.

  28. Manny's taking on Boras as his agent now. I guess as a hedge against his not getting the option year or years. If he does, I can't see how it would affect much.

Cool! You are one of the reasons we chose June 7, so feel honoured. :)

Nope. 'Fraid not. Allan works til midnight on Fridays, and there's no way we are taking a sick or vacation day to go to a game. But we'll be watching every night, including at work, thanks to our computery jobs. I'm glad Detroit is not far away.

That will be a nice change!

We have blog friends in Windsor, so we're hoping to meet them, and also make a trip to Pelee Island, where my favourite Ontario wine comes from.

  31. "there's no way we are taking a sick or vacation day to go to a game"

You two need to get your priorities straight:)

And Tim--Hope I didn't sound like a dick before, I know you have commented on my blog before. You probably were just absent that day.

  32. You two need to get your priorities straight:)

We use a lot of them for peace marches and events to help the war resisters.

    So there. :)

  33. It's especially frustrating since we can get half-price tickets! That helped us see every Sox game in Toronto last year.

  34. And Tim--Hope I didn't sound like a dick before, I know you have commented on my blog before. You probably were just absent that day.

Didn't realize what this meant till I scrolled up and read the other post you made - no need to apologize, I just never read that post/your blog....that is pretty hilarious though, that they put on a special sale for Red Sox members. I thought I was subscribed to the RS email list. Guess not, oh well...

Usually the best seats are taken by the scalpers anyways. And I've had good luck getting decent seats from either craigslist or the street scalpers for basically face value.

    Also;
    1. Ditto to jere's priorities comment, haha.

    2. HALF PRICE TICKETS?! Can I get in on this racket? lol...yeah, if I had to pay full price there's no way that I would be going to every game. Simply can't afford it. And beers cheaper at home, haha.

April is going to be a tough month on the pocket book. Apparently all of my favorite bands decided to play shows in Toronto/Guelph/London during the final two weeks of April....AKA the busiest time of the year for my job! I'm gonna be turning so many CA double plays (reference to commercial on Rogers during last years playoffs), its gonna be crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  35. HALF PRICE TICKETS?! Can I get in on this racket?

    No. Sorry. It's a gift from a friend who's a Rogers employee.

Last year I arranged two groups for games at half-price. YOU didn't make it. :)
