Since a tie is likely, Manny Ramirez's OPS will be used as a tiebreaker. For example, if Boston wins 100 games and Manny has a .900 OPS
both posters would be .002 away. I'll extend Manny's stats to extra decimals to determine the winner.Mr. X 100-62 .902
Ms. Y 100-62 .898
This year's prizes are: NESN's 2004 "Faith Rewarded" DVD and two soon-to-be released books: Jose Canseco's "Vindicated" (further 'roid ruminations) and "When Boston Still Had The Babe" (extensive biographies of the 32 players from the 1918 championship team).
PLUS ... a special grand prize! The winner is welcome to watch a 2009 Red Sox game* at Chez L-Sock. Game night includes dinner in our backyard, alcoholic beverages of your choice, and overnight accommodations. Transportation to the Toronto area not included. [*: Monday-Thursday only]
Good luck to everyone!

Looks like we need a tiebreaker for the tiebreaker. So .... for these two guys:
How many bases will Ellsbury steal this year?
87 wins seems like a pessimistic bet, but it's Price is right strategy. Bet a win below the lowest bidder and karin a has everything covered from 0-87 wins.
ReplyDeleteI guess in that sense, Redsock has 104+.
I hope you win Red sock. I'd buy you dinner.
karin a has everything covered from 0-87 wins
ReplyDeletekarin wins only if the sox finish with 87 wins.
if their win total ends up 0-86, 88 or 104-162, no one wins.
we're covered for 87 and 89-103. someone *should* win.
i was going to have Price is Right for the OPS, but it didn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteif manny has a 1.000, then a .990 would beat a 1.001. so i junked that idea.
i picked 104 because with all the optimism i insist upon, i have to set a good example. :>)
okay -- gotta go set the alarm for 5 AM and hit the sack!
OOoooooooooooooooooooooooo man i can feel it in the air - 8 hours til the title defense begins! ive said it a kajillion times, but lookin forward to a great season @ j0s again!
ReplyDeleteprobably won't be around in the AM...bah who am i kidding, of course i will be! once i get a couple cups of coffee and some foodstuffs in me....this is going to be great!
time for beauty sleep now though...
I hope you win Red sock. I'd buy you dinner.
ReplyDeleteMe too! And I'll buy you dinner, too.
If there's still time:
ReplyDelete99-63
OPS 1.05

(delurking, didn't enter the contest)
ReplyDeleteredsock, do you have an easy way to average out everyone's predictions for the win/loss and MannyOPS? Along the lines of tangotiger's community projections, it would be interesting to see what the consensus is.
enjoy the game! Out here on the west coast, I don't think I'll be able to catch it.
(back to lurking)
sparky's in since the season had not started when he posted.
ReplyDeletealso i forgot one pick (leigh at 101), so there are now 72 entries.
joe grav upped his OPS by .001 so no need for the SB pick.
brewin': you could add them up and divide by 72.
ReplyDeleteWho's the putz who didn't enter the contest?
ReplyDeleteOh, right. me.
Just because I got around to checking back on this- The average prediction has the Red Sox record at 96.8-67.2 (73 entries)
ReplyDeleteDidn't take the time to figure out Manny's average predicted OPS, because I wasn't able to paste the data into a spreadsheet in a usable form. Alas.
aw, screw it. what's a little transcription, anyway.
ReplyDeletethe average for Manny's OPS is 0.971.
prediction averages are 97-65, 0.971
cheers.
